Great CD.......2006-03-30
I picked this CD up while stationed in Panama City, Panama in 1996. I've been listening to this band for 10 years and I still love them. This CD is like their "SGT Pepper's", when the Beatles went through their metamorphosis from a pop type band to a serious rock and roll band. Just like with the Beatles, their older stuff and newer stuff are great. I'm not comparing them to the Beatles, but this shows that the band wasn't afraid to deviate from what made them popular. There are some really amazing tracks on here like "No ha parado de llover" and "siempre el amor" I've seen this band live in Bogota, Colombia and Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. Superb live band, and I cannot believe that with the huge influx of latin music over the last 6-8 years like Shakira, Ricky Martin and Paulina Rubio, that these guys haven't taken off in the States. They even did a cover of Led Zeppelin's Fool in the Rain that is awesome, and is on the International version of "Encomium: a tribute to Led Zeppelin" Definately give this band a try, and don't let the language Barrier get in the way. Also, pick up Mana en vivo, great live concert and superb sound, although this was recorded before "Cuando los angeles lloran"
Six stars
Muy Bien.......2005-09-23
Mana is one of the Best! Never ending talent! No matter what mood you are in - you can listen to Mana!
Maná at its best.......2005-05-22
I admire Maná for having put moving and meaningful lyrics to such attractive accompaniment. Maná is my favorite band of all time, and I have spent the past 5 years with this CD and others of Maná, listening to them nearly once per week since I bought them in September, 2000.
love Mana!.......2004-02-20
I first encountered Mana when I went to Peru this past summer and loved it! When I came back to the States I was excited to see that my local bookstore carried Mana. I bought this cd and their Sol cd and I love them both! We use and listen to Mana in my Spanish class all the time. The are an international band that you dont have to know the language to enjoy their music.
Can't understand a word, but I love it.......2004-02-18
Somehow, someway this CD ended up in my collection. Honestly, I have no idea how this CD came to me. Just before I made it a coaster or a mini-frisbee I decided to put it in the player... Wow, MANA blew me away! This esquisitly made album is truly wonderful. The title cut Cuando Los Angeles Lloran is a marvelous song. In fact, nearly every one of these songs gets me humming along. Since don't know a word of Spanish I let the melody and the fine performances carry me along. MANA has a fan in the Great White North (Minnesota). Please don't let a language barrier disuade you from giving this great band a listen.

EXTRAORDINARY!.......2004-10-19
Extraordinary does not begin to describe the beauty and depth of this album recorded live with three of the finest male cantors in the world today. I have the video, but it does not require the video to feel the joy in their performance together in this historical Amsterdam synagogue.
I can only say thanks to all involved in bringing this album to fruition.
This is my first review submitted to Amazon and it seems fitting.
Great music.......2004-01-30
I also ordered this after I watched the PBS special. I love it.

How Did I Miss This One?!.......2003-07-20
This is one of those cd's that I bought and just kind of forgot about it. I suppose it was partly because I was not crazy about the two songs they picked for singles (Como tu, La vida no es igual).
Well, let me tell you now after having listened like 50 times in the last week, this is a brlliliantly dark and complex album.
"Secreto", "Viaje astral", "Por un beso" and "Ultimo planeta" are among the veteran's very best (which is saying alot). Saul's lyrics as always are intelligent, at times abstract, the vocals are top notch (Saul has a natrual sadness in his voice, which seems as if it is directly from his tortured soul). The music is well orchestrated and executed, and there is enough variety in the rythems and pace so to keep it fresh throughout.
Definitly add this to your collection.
One of the Best Rock Groups ever.......2002-07-19
What can I add to this already spectacular album. If I thought Jaguares were the best before (even with Caifanes), this album proves it more so. Jaguares is a combination of different rock style all in one. Saul Hernandez words make it even more interesting to listen to this music. I've lent this album to a couple of people who either didn't like Jaguares or didn't even know who they were, and now they too are fans. Even my mother likes them and she used to love Mana. Now she is a bigger fan of Jaguares. I like Mana a lot as well as Soda Sterio, Heroes Del Silencio, just to name a few. But Jaguares music somehow touches peoples heart in a particular way. Every single song in this album is worth listening even if you are not a big fan.
Music Fan.......2002-04-15
Well this jaguares cd is the bomb. Im a rock fan and bands fan. i like both kinds of music. ... All jaguares cds are all great. The best songs in this cd is #1,#3 and #6. ...
Beautiful.......2002-03-12
This was the first Jaguares CD I bought and I have to say that I'm not in the least bit disappointed. The lyrics are beautiful and soulful - real poetry. I can listen to this entire CD through without skipping any tracks and I think that really says a lot for the band. I saw them live last night at the TLA in Philadelphia and they put on a helluva show. So much energy, so much talent, simply fantastic. If you ever get a chance, see them live. They work with the crowd instead of a lot of bands who distance themselves from the very people whom they should be trying to connect with. But yes, this CD is well worth the buying. Even if you don't speak a single word of Spanish, get it. The music alone is a good enough reason. You won't regret it.
a bit disappointing.......2002-01-31
While many Jaguares/caifanes fans was disappointed with "Bajo el azul de tu misterio"I was disappointed with this. It begun with the horrible song "Como tu", fortunitialy the other songs are better, but not much better I am afraid. There are a couple of songs here which almost are on the same level as their other albums "El secreto" a really catchy punk/rock song(the first song I liked here), "Vijae Astral" a rock/pop song, and "Viejo el mundo" is very good!. But the others kind of goes in the one ear and out the other, track 4 is great. La vida no es igual is original, but not in my cup of tea. I just felt that I had heard al this before by other groups. But then again it is much better then al the Mtv rock out there thats for sure!

Una Joya Musical - A Musical Gem.......2006-12-13
Edith Marquez is without a doubt part of the new generation of musical Diva's. Her talent is undisputed. Excellent voice, amazing presence, and true beauty make her one today's most complete Latin singers. Her newest CD is a journey through meloncoly with powerful balads that will make any rainy night a memorable one. I highly reccomend this musical gem, that will be a great addition to your Latin music collection.
Golazo!.......2006-12-03
* De Nuevo Tu (el mejor tema en mi opinion)
* Perdida
* Quien vive en tu piel
* Donde va el amor
Super recomendable-

Customer Reviews:
Songs of Passion.......2003-12-16
For about fifty cents each song you can have this dozen of Jose Alfredo Jimenez's most popular songs. The included tracks which are not given in the details here are as follows : 1. "La Del Rebozo Blanco" 2. "Vamos" 3.Viente Anos" 4."Viejos Amigos" 5. "Paloma Querida" 6. "Si Tu Tambien Te Vas" 7."Adios a Carrasco" 8.Cuando Lloran Los Hombres" 9."Tu Enamorado" 10. "Llegando a Ti" 11."Tu Partida" 12. "Noche Criolla." Undoubtedly if you are a collector of Jose Alfredo songs you will find several songs here not found on the various compilations. One such song is "Viente Anos" which is one of those rare gems not found elsewhere for whatever reason. Several other less popular but equally satisfying as their more well known counterparts are "Viejos Amigos," "Tu Partida," "Adios Carrasco" and "Noche Criolla".If you love the music of El Rey than this is a nice addition to your collection or a good place to start. An interesting aspect of this disc is that these are the original versions of the more popular releases that are on the compilations. Apparently on the compilations there has been some modifications made to the originals because they are definitely different. For one the originals are monaural but play with brilliant fidelity on a quality system. One suggestion offered to me was that possibly the tracks on the compilations were using "canned " or archived backup material and the voice layed on later or vice versa. In any case there is a noticeable difference. The differences aside, the songs featured on the original disc are the same in terms of excellent musicianship, with El Rey belting out his compositions as only he can and the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan showing why they are considered the best mariachi and setting the standard by which all others are measured. The voice of El Rey is young and vibrant with the years of hard living and the ravages of time have not yet done noticeable damage . His voice has more of the suttle nuances of Pedro Infante. This is El Rey in his embryonic stage where his distinct vocal stylings have not yet matured but are riping beautifully. It is worth noting these differences because many people are only familiar with the material offered on compilations. El Rey offers his familiar and unfamiliar including the beautiful love song to his wife "Paloma Querida" in which he immortalized her for future generations. A lesser known song, "Viejos Amigos" was written while visting Cuba and after an encounter with a shoe shine man, in which the Cuban figured out he was Mexican because Mexicans "sing" when they talk, he was inspired to to write the song in a garden in Havana. All in all this is a good collection of twelve original recordings of passion. This is another in a line of original recordings, at a bargain price with no frills but just great music. Recommended for fans of ranchera music and one of it's best proponents, the late great El Rey, Jose Alfredo Jimenez.

Lo mejor del barroco latinoamericano.......2000-09-18
In this Dorian recording we hear music by Latin-American composers from South America(Colombia,Venezuela,Peru, and Bolivia) and one Portuguesse composer who worked in Puebla,Mexico....All music after track #10 are christmas carols of the period, two of these carols are anonymous... track #13 was composed by Juan Perez de Bocanegra in Peru, is a hymn in Quechua (The language of the Incas)....Tracks nos. 16,17 and 18 are by Gaspar Fernandes, the manuscript for most of this music were found in Puebla,Mexico...Track #16 is in one of many dialects found in the new world. Tracks nos. 17 and 18 are of a form of popular music at the time, known as 'negrito', this is music that was written for performance by African slaves, because they are in a "broken-down" Spanish, as it was spoken by the african slaves, all three of this villancicos are christmas carols, and I think that this practice was done to make easier the conversions of natives and Africans to christianity....So here in this recording we have a little of the very best of the baroque music in a new world.....The Camerata Renacentista de Caracas do a very good job and the instrumentation is wonderful... I still ask my self this quiestion at times:How much music is still hidden in monasteries an cathedrals in Latin-America???? How many composers might be there be that we still know nothing about them, or their music???????

Exploring the connections between early music and what we know as folksong, Joel Cohen and his very adventurous and competent band of musicians not only show us where many familiar tunes come from, they also give us fresh and illuminating renditions of songs from the 10th century to the middle of the 20th century. Besides the recording's obvious educational value, its primary purpose, according to Cohen, is "to give pleasure." That it does, often in amusing ways, as when a song with religious origins is transformed into a ribald descendant. It's also fun to see how widespread some songs are, with different versions common to many countries. Cohen demonstrates how songs that came from Renaissance forms were preserved by common folk long after the "elite" classes abandoned them. The songs are enhanced by excellent instrumental playing and well-conceived arrangements. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Charming, simple & striking. Full of delightful surprises!.......2002-11-29
Many early music groups these days explain cross-cultural musical influences in their program notes, and proceed to play their selections accordingly. Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata take it the logical step further by actually performing the "root" pieces side by side with the later music that reflects their particular influence. The result is inspired, thought-provoking groupings of related tunes and texts that span not only centuries but continents. The Boston Camerata is primarily a vocal ensemble, with a sound that is spare, pure and direct. Some of their renditions are performed a cappella, while others are accompanied by light, period instrumentation. If you've ever heard this group live in concert, you may recall the surreal effect of sitting in a theater that is pin-drop quiet, waiting for one or two musicians at a time to step forward and break the silence with a clarity and presence that holds the entire audience spellbound from first note to last. The effect of listening to this recording is much the same. My favorites on this release are the groupings of different versions of the same ballad--"Three Ravens", "Gypsy Davy", and "Barbara Allen", for example. The pairing of the Appalacian song "Betty Anne" with its exact harmonic match--a 16th century ricercada for viols by Diego Ortiz--is also quite striking, and I also enjoyed the "shape-note" and "Fa-sol-la" singing-school selections representative of early American music. In the insert, director Joel Cohen explains: "This unorthodox recording, an intentionally provocative mix of early art song and modern folksong, is meant first of all to give pleasure - but it is also a meditation on history, on archetypes, and on the transmission of human culture." The Boston Camerata succeeds admirably here on both counts!
Tour de Force of American Musical Roots!.......2001-01-05
Prepare to go on an amazing, haunting musical tour when you put this disc on your player. Joel Cohen (bless him) has once again assembled a group of musicians and singers who are up to the task of taking themselves, and you the listener, back through the mists of musical time. This disc contains songs that span hundreds of years, many of which actually originate in other lands. Yet, these songs would find their way into the early diverse fabric of colonial America, and go on to inspire much of emerging folk music in this country. Some of these songs are secular, but others have a distinctly religious flavor (as in the first piece on Judgment Day and the "stars falling"). Others are merry, dance-like tunes, and remind one of what might have been performed in medieval courts in Europe. Some are sung in english, others in different languages. The range of musical style and vocal interpretation is incredible. This wonderful diversity reminds the listener that America always had diverse roots, and even in colonial times, we were a nation that drew its strength and inspiration from many cultural sources. I like to listen to this disc during the bleak nights of winter, but it is wonderful music for any occasion. If you really are intrigued by the historical development of American music -- or any music -- then this disc is a "must" for your collection. Also recommended: "The World Turned Upside Down" (Barry Philips), "A Land of Pure Delight" (His Majestie's Clerkes), and "Simple Gifts: Shaker Cbants and Spirituals" (Joel Cohen and Boston Camerata).
Astonishing.......2000-03-25
The album is astonishing. It is rare to find a continuous line of musical thought from the turn of the previous millenium to its end. This album demonstrates the evolution of music over about a thousand year period and includes some very early versions of what we would call modern songs.
It is worth the price of the CD several times over and is one of my favorites in my CD collection.
