David Starobin and Bridge Records have done it again, coming up with a brilliant program of dance pieces by modern composers of every stripe. The highly entertaining contributions by John Anthony Lennon ("Gigolo"), Jorge Morel ("Reflexiones Latinas"), and Steve Mackey ("San Francisco Shuffle") might have been expected, since they reflect an appealingly eclectic musical aesthetic. But Milton Babbitt? Or Elliot Carter? Not exactly composers to set your toes tapping, at least at first glance. So it's a double tribute, both to the composers themselves, and to Starobin, for getting them to let their hair down and contribute two of the most entertaining pieces on the disc. The whole enterprise is emblematic of everything that this enterprising artist (and his equally enterprising label) do better than anyone else: good music, fun music, modern music. A must for guitar fans, classical radio stations, or anyone looking for a genuinely rewarding change of pace. --David Hurwitz

David Starobin's Newdance is the American guitar virtuoso's first solo CD in more than 6 years- a disc much anticipated by guitar aficionados. Newdance consists of 18 new dance pieces by 18 leading composers, all composed for Starobin. Newdance presents an inspired and eclectic collection of new guitar music, ranging from rags, waltzes and tangos to chaconnes and courantes, to abstract visions of the dance, all performed brilliantly by the artist that Soundboard Magazine called: "arguably the most influential American classical guitarist of the 20th Century."

Makes me want to dance.......2001-06-22

This music was very good. I listen to a lot of classical guitar but this is much more upbeat. The music makes you want to move, it is hard to sit still. It was not what I was used to but i definatlly enjoyed it.

A perfect follow-up to "Secretos"........2003-06-19

"Reflexiones" was the perfect follow-up to "Secretos" and included the hits "Payaso", "Sere", "Y Que?" and "Disimula". Jose Jose's prolific career received a major boost with both "Secretos" and "Reflexiones" the two CDs that arguably cemented his status as a living legend.

The second album of the 3th. era of golden hits of Jose Jose.......2000-02-19

ENGLISH: This album, produced by Rafael Perez Botija, tries the same formula that succeced in "Secretos", the previous album of Jose: a whole album with one composer (remember that "Secretos" is the Jose best sold album ever). Jose Jose and Perez Botija in their mature styles made a different new way to make romantic music that the composer will use with different artists later. Every song is great and plenty of feeling.

The performance of Jose is mature and measured, and a bit soften than the previous album. "Y que?" is the first single, "Payaso" is a very nice song, "Sere" is a prophetic song that talks about the future of his career ("some day my voice will be not my voice, my sung will be not my sung...I will be who gave it all for success, leaving his life damaged...I will be an old hawk giving bread to the birds").

The album can be considered the second album of Jose with international success, and having grammy nomination again.

Este album, producido por Rafael Pérez Botija, intenta la misma fórmula que tuvo éxito en "Secretos", el album previo de José: un album completo con un solo compositor (recuerden que "Secretos" es el album mejor vendido de José José). José José y Pérez Botija en su estilo ya maduro hicieron una forma diferente de hacer música romántica que el compositor usaría después con otros artistas. Todas las canciones son muy buenas y llenas de sentimiento.

La interpretación de José es madura y mesurada, un poco más suave que en el album anterior. "¿Y qué?" es el primer sencillo, "Payaso" es una canción muy buena, "Seré" es una canción profética que habla del futuro de su carrera ("un día llegará que ya mi voz ya no será mi voz, mi canto no será mi canto...Seré quien todo lo dió por triunfar, dejando su vida al pasar hecha pedazos...Seré un viejo gavilán cansado dejando a las palomas pan".

Este album puede ser considerado el segundo album con el que José tiene éxito internacional y obtuvo una nominación al grammy otra vez.

Album Description

CD 1 In Piano Concerto No. 1, Carlos Franzetti continues in the tradition of great 20th Century piano concerti, using brilliant polyphony, polytechnics and thematic development. It was commissioned in loving memory of Grace M. Corman by The Commission Project in Rochester New York, founded by Ned Corman and is brilliantly performed by pianist Allison Brewster Franzetti. Symphony No. 2 - The Year of the Malvinas was commissioned by Lorenz Russo. Carlos Franzetti completed it in January 2004 and continues in the tradition of great 20th Century symphonies, this time with a Shostakovich-like tour-de-force, using thematic transformation and repetition, textures, ostinati and dramatic visual images brought to life by this music. CD 2 Concierto del Plata was originally comissioned as a concerto for guitar and piano. This marks the first performance of the equally compelling transcription for piano and orchestra by Carlos Franzetti and Allison Brewster Franzetti. The tango-inspired first movement and milonga-inspired second movement serve as a tribute to Carlos Franzetti's Argentine roots; its Americana-inspired third movement to his adopted country, the United States. Reflexiones is Carlos Franzetti's tribute to the events of September 11, 2001. This deeply emotional and heart-wrenching performance of an extraordinary composition express all of the shock, travesty and loss of innocent lives that took place on that horrendous day. Suite from "Dans le rouge du couchant" is the original music written as the score of the 2003 Spanish-French film of that name and is new tango at its best.
