Through the course of Como Ama Una Mujer, the first full-blown collection of Spanish-language tunes from multicultural diva Jennifer Lopez, we keep waiting for it to happen. A sweltering, hands-in-the-air dance anthem--the kind that made Lopez a superstar. Alas, the club beats never materialize: not even a soul-diva shimmy. The closest Lopez comes to is midtempo first single "Que Hiciste." (Seek out the pulsing, reggaeton-flavored remix for maximum dance floor fabulousness.) What we get here is a surprisingly solid collection of elegant ballads and rock-flavored tunes that showcase new vocal strengths and surprising lyrical maturity. Producers Marc Anthony, Estefano and Julio Reyes give Lopez the gloss without overpowing her, a key element to the disc's success. La Lopez recycles one track from 2005's Rebirth, "(Can't Believe) This Is Me," which pops up here as the superior "Porque te Marchas." The disc's second half is a sweeping, often gorgeous, stream of romantic consciousness, starting with the lovely "Tu" and gliding through the gently chugging "Sola." And the beautiful closing track "Adios" is a standout, pairing Lopez's lilting vocals with a gentle string arrangement and a rousing chorus of voices. A sterling achievement from a diva whose talent is just beginning to blossom. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-07-31

This was my first Jennifer Lopez CD purchase. Most of the songs on the album are ballads, and I prefer more upbeat music, but I still enjoy this CD. I'd definitely purchase another music CD by Jennifer Lopez.

1 out of 5 stars Terribly Disappointed.......2007-06-27

Though her voice is good; she should stick to Pop music. Too many ballads and the soul searching lyrics. Lyrics not appropriate for her. She sings about sadness and disappointment when we all know her life is so different. The songs did not match her or what she represents to Latinos and women. Jennifer should continue to do Pop music and upbeat tempos and forget about the torch songs of pain and abandonment. Not a good match. What were her producers thinking. Hello!!!! Wasted my money. I never listen to it again.

1 out of 5 stars Mi opinion, escucha este CD antes de comprarlo!.......2007-06-21

Empiezo en comentar que cuando salio este CD a la venta pense que con el apoyo de Marc Anthony este proyecto iba a ser un exito. Desgraciadamente me equivoque.

3 out of 5 stars 1 hit song.......2007-06-15

there is only 1 hit, the others are tolerable. spanish is good, but her voice is a little shakey on ballads

5 out of 5 stars best ever from jennifer lopez.......2007-06-05

I can hardly wait for the next all spanish cd from jennifer lopez - she could be the female luis miguel! it is just beautiful - especially "tu" and "por arriesgarnos". what took her so long to do this?

5 out of 5 stars Por Una Mujer Bonita.......2004-10-04

Pepe Aguilar, is one of a kind the way he sings makes one feel every word. The heart he puts into his music ( sentimiento ). I love his music, He is the WOW! for singers. Any song Ranchera, Balada, Banda. I have yet to hear a song that will not be done to excellence if he sings it. I Love Pepe.

5 out of 5 stars Pepe Aguilar Rules.......2000-09-15

From the first time I saw the movie El Hijo De Lamberto Quintero to now I've been a Pepe Aguilar fan. It was the song Esta Tristesa Mia which hit the heart profoundly. If you haven't heard this song, it is in one of his albums con Tambora. This CD along with the rest that he has con Mariachi are simply masterpieces and cannot be duplicated. Pepe directs and produces most of his albums, and not even Alejandro Fernandez can do that, nor can he sing con Tambora. I really recommend any of his albums, simply because he is one of the best out there today.

4 out of 5 stars . . ........2000-07-09

I agree that this CD is wonderful for a person with such a melodic and sweet voice Pepe Aguilar does a wonderful job singing rancheras. BUT in no way is he beter than Vicente Fernandez, the man is THE charro alegre de mexico he has a strong and raspy voice made to sing ONLY rancheras he's a national treasure and can't be surpassed. Oh and by the way, this CD is wonderful, one of my favorites hope this helped you in your selectoin ;)

5 out of 5 stars Jerezano.......2000-03-24

Pepe Aguilar did it again another great cd a favorite in my list. he proved again that he's better than Vicente & Alejandro Fernandez. a better everything Pepe is the total package a great vocalist director producer and a real charro like his father the great Antonio Aguilar the songs in this cd are very good sung the way only Pepe can.nobody even comes close to his style.I especially liked the song titled "El Zacatecano" because it mentiones Jerez the city were my parents were born i cant wait for his next cd wich wil be a hit too.

4 out of 5 stars Recomendado; si gustan de baladas rancheras..........2000-02-22

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-02-20

I like Placido Domingo very much, and the songs of Agustin Lara sung by Mr. Domingo are great, as also the other songs by M. Teresa Lara, Jorge Casas and Julio Hernandez. I really like this album and have it in my car to listen to it over and over again while driving long distances. I think this was a good purchase and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Expressive.......2007-02-17

Agustin Lara made bright and new, without overdone orchestration. Many songs are from the Suite Espanola, and all are beloved by lovers of the Lara bolero, an emotional journey not to be missed. A new sound for a few, that were known in Mexico as performed by Alejandro Algara, a less known lyric tenor. Very bright, and with less slips in the mix than the A. Lara, Suite Espanola CD by Mr. Domingo, titled Bajo El Cielo Espanol, also a great offering by this dramatic performer. This is really another Domingo that is needed by any fan...Singing his own love of Spanish songs in songs by one of the great historical song writers....A Winner, in my opinion!

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening Music.......2000-03-14

A wonderful CD, a hidden treasure, by an artist who has suffered for being born in the Age of Pavarotti. Nobody does this kind of music better than Domingo - you will be transported.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......1999-12-10

This is Placido Domingo at his best--singing love songs in his native language. Very romantic and beautiful songs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!!!.......1999-10-07

Love the C.D. as every one with the greatest voice ever! Placido Domingo is magnificent! The songs are lovely and the recording is very good.

5 out of 5 stars UNREAL!! Alicia's voice is OUTSTANDING!!!!.......2007-05-13

This album is perfection in one word; it has beautiful songs w/beautiful arrangements and a singer with the most beautiful voice and raw passion. PLEASE buy this album; you won't be disappointed. I have all of Alicia Villarreal's songs, from when she was in Grupo Limite singing in a tejano/norteño style and she is amazing no matter what, but her rancheras are truly special; her voice was made for the genre. To make a comparison, this mariachi album of hers is equally as solid as her earlier 'Soy Lo Prohibido' but in my opinion the songs on that were simply inimitable; that is by far her best CD; the choice of songs you cannot surpass. Regardless, this album too, is magnificent in its own right; thanks to Alicia Villarreal and her impeccable taste as well as talent. Gracias Alicia!

5 out of 5 stars A 'MAGNIFICO' GRAMMY-NOMINATED MARIACHI PERFORMANCE !!.......2006-11-19

Five MUSICAL Stars! Wow!! This magnificent Latin Grammy-nominated CD is by the Grammy-winning Alicia Villarreal, who is recognized as one of Latin America's finest singers. The wonderful CD cover photo showing the beautiful laser-eyed Alicia decked out in a sombrero, striking a mariachi pose but without the ornamented 'traje de charro', speaks for itself. Actually, the theme of this double platinum CD is a woman's pride and celebrates the triumphs and tribulations of femininity. From the standpoint of production values, musical arrangements, musicians, and performances, this CD is a wonderful experience and is produced by the super producer/musician/songwriter Joan Sebastian, a Latin music legend since his rise in the 1970's.

Once called "the next Selena", Latin Grammy-winning singer Alicia Villarreal steps away from that unnecessary title and delivers a STUNNING personal performance of mariachi-influenced music, done her way with her golden voice. And she is AWESOME, showing her versatility in every way. No mere copying the most popular mariachi 'serenatas', waltzes, and polkas, she puts her personal stamp on a great selection of songs. Going from a whisper to soaring above the trumpets and strings, she is magnificent, flamboyant, and in control. All sung in Spanish with no translation necessary since the music is laden with pure emotion and sensuality.

The 'Pieces De Resistance, the best of the best, are all 10 songs. Each one is a jewel in itself. But I especially like the awesome "Enredo" (~Tangle) with it's shifting time signatures and restless, skipping beat. "Qué Te Parece" (What It Seems To You) and "Las Mujeres Olvidadas" (The Forgotten Women) are incredible performances. The heartbreaking "Insensible a Ti (Me Pone a Mil)" was #1 on the Mexican Billboard charts and, beyond her outstanding vocal, is notable for the arrangement and background execution over which she SOARS in a very touching way. "Ni Por Interesada" takes us deep into Mexico and back in time in a wonderful way. This CD could serve as a very good introduction to Mariachi music. Alicia Villarreal was destined to sing Mariachi and is casting a spell across Latin America with her total musical artistry. My Highest Recommendation. A sensational performance worthy of more than Five Stars!

(*This review is based on a 10 track ITunes download.
*For those who wonder about her authenticity, Alicia headlined the 2006 Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference Spectacular Concert in New Mexico at the Pan American Center with some of the cream of crop of Mariachi groups performing along side. She's the Real Deal. )

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding vocals by ALICIA!.......2006-05-11

I've been a big fan of Alicia's voice and style since her Grupo Limite debut. I most say that this new cd released by her,it's her best solo release to date.
I heard the first single from this cd "Que no se Entere"on spanish television and was impressed with the powerful vocals, music arrangements and song lyrics that I had to buy the cd.
I was totally blown away by other songs in the cd..such as my favorite.."Insensible a ti(me pone a mil)" & "Que Te parece".
Excellent overall cd by one of the best female voices in spanish music--ALICIA VILLARREAL!

1 out of 5 stars suprising content.......2007-02-07

Cura is wonderful but the style on this recording was not at all to my taste, my husband's taste or to a hispanic family's taste who know more about the "bolero" style than we do. Unfortunately, we all hated it. It is a sort of a slow, slighly jazzy drawl of music that never grabbed any of us.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Smitten (Hook, Line and Sinker!!!).......2003-07-05

I first heard Mr. Cura on a duet with Sarah Brightman (There For Me), and I said I have to have an album of this 'muy macho' guy. I'm not really a fan of opera music so I chose "Boleros" and can't help but swoon over this total stand-out of a guy. And his being so handsome is an added bonus. This album is a must-have for all hopeless romantics.

5 out of 5 stars A Voice Of Pure Beauty!!!.......2003-01-17

First Off I Am NOT An Opera Buff!! I Don't Speak Spanish! But After Discovering Luis Miguel & Alejandro Fernandez I Fell In Love With These Songs, Based On That Love I Purchased This Cd And Have Become An Instant Fan Of Jose Cura!!! His Voice Is Glorious & He Sings These Songs With Such Passion & Tenderness That He Takes You Beyond This Earth And A Little Closer To BLISS!!! Please Buy This And Add Some Romance To Your Life!!!!

4 out of 5 stars unusual but lovely venture.......2002-12-12

Folks, let me offer a word of piece. Jose Cura the tenor and Jose Cura the pop singer are like two different personalities. Yes, to those of us who heard him live in opera (and haven't heard his "Anhelo" CD) this comes as a surprise. After all, not a single high C (or B for that matter) makes a presence, and majority of the selections are sung in near-whisper manner. It's decidedly un-operatic.
But it's an interesting and lovely album of songs arranged in a soft jazz-like way, and Cura invests a lot of feeling into each of these. I listened to the album about 3 times before coming to appreciate it. Do likewise and you'll descover a totally new side to this remarkable artist.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone's a critic.......2002-08-26

...

As for this CD, there is nothing to say other than FABULOUS!!!
By and far one of the best CD's I own and a most brilliant example of Mr. Curas' vocal and interprative talents.
While he does sound more baritonal than anything else, it is exactly that which sets this CD apart form any of Domingos' "pop" efforts....or any CD of contemporary nature by other Tenors i.e. Boccelli etc.
Granted, Mr. Cura avoids most high notes (the highest sung on any song is an A natural), but given the song selections and that this is a vocal Jazz CD, there really is no room nor need for any excessive Tenoral vocalizing.
If you like Jazz and want to hear a world class Tenor sing it, purchase this CD.
Unless you belong to the "If it's not Pavarotti, it's no good.." crowd, you're promised to enjoy this most recent effort by Mr. Cura immensely.

This CD is simply one of the classics of Latin Pop, defining the music genre in many senses. If you are starting a Latin Pop collection, this record cannot be ignored. You will play this CD once--and continue to play it over and over again. A timeless masterpiece of inventive pop that even the artist himself has had difficulty replicating.

5 out of 5 stars Simplemente genial - no sólo para sus incondicionales.......1999-01-15

The first of the really good Luis Miguel records. Has some classic ballads and funky uptempo songs. An excellent latino effort from this amazing singer and a good place to start your collection.

The soundtrack to the biggest Latin American hunk-fest film of 2005, this 16-track collection is the best that the Spanish language alternative music scene has to offer. The story revolves around a wife who decides to trade an unsatisfying marriage for a clandestine affair with her husband's poet brother. Appropriately, the songs exude the hopefulness of initial romantic attraction, the sexiness of when the connection is consummated, and the chaos of when things turn bad. Kudos to A&R guy Terry Borden for picking the material, but the bands really deliver the goods. Tanghetto's techno-tango version of New Order's dance floor classic "Blue Monday" is absolute fun without losing the unstoppable groove of the original. The Pinker Tones "TMCR Grand Finale" is brown-eyed soul of the highest order, and Aterciopelados singer Andrea Echeverri's "Baby Blues" is a strong intimate effort from this star. As far as soundtracks go, this is on a par with the great Y Tu Mama Tambien. --Tad Hendrickson

      Album Description

The soundtrack to one of Latin America's biggest films of last year. It follows the success of other influential films/soundtracks that have defined the new wave of Latin American cinema, such as "Amores Perros" and "Y Tu Mama Tambien". Highlights include Tanghetto's new "electro tango" version of the seminal New Order favorite "Blue Monday", and a re-working of the La Ley classic track, "Mentira" by Beto Cuevas, the vocalist from multi-Grammy winning artist La Ley, who also appears in the film.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Latin electronica sampler.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent overview of Latin-electronica that is as contemporary as it is innovative. Some of the songs have tangoesque influences, similiar to the Bajofondo Club release from a few years back. Other styles are more in the vein of Cafe Tacuba's venture into electronica or Nortec(who has a song featured). In any event the songs are really quite tasty and have a nice dance club edge that lies somewhere between chill and roc n Espanol. There is even reggae-dub infused songs , like the offering by Mexican Institute of Sound's "Dub a-El Tiempo Es Muy Largo" which features street scene soundtracks mixed in with echo tweeks and thumping bass lines. The music runs the gamut of different emotions from tenderness to chaos but all with style that is modern and reflective of the urban experience. There are a few well known artists from the Latin genre, most notably Nortec, Beto Cuevas(La Ley), M.I.O.S. and Andrea Echeverri(Aterciopelados). Songs of particular note include "Malato" by Novalima that sounds like a Susan Baca influenced song that is sorrowful sprinkled with jazz trumpet and with heavy percussion throughout, the Cafe Tacubaesque "Transan" by Intoxicados that has catchy lyrics and beats, the hip-hopish "I Drink She Smokes" by Kemo The Blaxican, the remake of "Blue Monday" by Tanghetto that is dance floor ready, the trippy "Olividela Compa" by Nortec Collective, the remix stripped down version of "Mentira" by Beto Cuevas and the lovely personal "Baby Blues " by Andrea Echeverri. If you are new to Latin electronica and some of its hybrid offshoots than this is a great place to get into the music. If you like it already than this is a great offering from a variety of artists. Recommended for those with an ear to the ground to know what is going down; it is the music of the streets of the barrios and the urban sprawls of the big cities.

      4 out of 5 stars ElectroLatin.......2006-05-25

Though labeled a "soundtrack" (because it is, in fact, music from a film) this serves as an excellent introduction and overview to the contemporary latin, especially Mexican, electronica scene. Highlights include the Gotan-esque tango of Tanghetto's "Blue Monday" (yes, the New Order classic as interpreted by jazzy bandoleon players), the suave hip-hoppish "Don't Let Go" by Pacha, and tracks by Bitman and Roban, The Pinker Tones, and Nortec Collective. Highly recommended for that margarita or mojito-spashed summer party you're getting ready to throw or attend.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible soundtrack with great electronica.......2006-04-15

I picked this album up after hearing Tanghetto's incredible electro-tango cover of the New Order classic "Blue Monday" on KCRW. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. This soundtrack is a great survey of today's Latin electronic music scene - I really enjoyed the cuts from Nortec Collective, Mexican Institute of Sound, and The Pinker Tones.

Although I'm not a huge La Ley fan, it was awesome seeing Beto Cuevas in the movie and I liked his solo re-working of the La Ley hit "Mentira". All in all, this is probably the best soundtrack I've picked up in a while.
