5 out of 5 stars Chico O'Farrill as major composer.......2001-03-07

Latin Jazz has never gotten the credit it deserves (did you hear Ken Burns mention it?), and Chico O'Farrill is unjustly left off most lists of our greatest 20th Century composers. The O'Farrill - Gillespie partnership goes back to the 1940s, and this album finds both of them, well after the era they made their names in, still at an absolute zenith of their creative ability. I would compare this to the Gil Evans - Miles Davis collaborations.

4 out of 5 stars Good Solid Disc.......2000-04-27

Dizzy Sounds Good Here. His Music is without Category.that is Genius&Legacy. His Work Still is Mind-Blowing.He is One Of The Greatest Musicians ever in any Style of Music. He Combines Many Elements really well Here.

5 out of 5 stars This one is REALLY GREAT so don't listen to the naysayers.......1999-12-03

I have over 30 Diz pieces and have seen him a few times. This one, while more contemporary in that is an orchestral arrangement by Chico O' Farrill, is REALLY tremendous and along with Bahiana are my two favorite later Diz albums. It ain't bebop, it's latin and if you are listenin' to it wantin' bebop, you should put on a bebop album. I happen to really love any of Diz's latin/afro-cuban albums. You can also hear latin songs on even his earliest Bluebird recordings and they are fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-10-15

I disagree with the listener who thought that this had a "Tonight Show" band sound. Especially as to the first piece (which was the entire 1st side of the vinyl album when it came out), the arrangement and performances are varied and exciting. Dizzy's playing is excellent as well. I have found that many people who are rock fans with little exposure to jazz respond well to the first piece on this album, and think that it is quite exciting and interesting. Dizzy had made umpteen albums with his bop soloing over an acoustic quartet, and this album was an admirable attempt to give him a different style to play in.

4 out of 5 stars Not TYPICAL Dizzy Afro-Cuban!.......1999-10-14

However, I liked the CD very much. Though the CD was not what I expected from Dizzy Gillespie, because it can sound sort of contemporary in a "Hawaii 5-0" theme song kind of way, it is a wonderful album and is still a welcome addition to your Dizzy collection.

Frank Raul Grillo, also known as Machito, was the leader of The Afro-Cubans, a fiery definitive Latin-jazz big band. Not only did they sport a topnotch percussion section, featuring Candido Camero, Jose Mangual, and Uba Nieto, but they worked the arrangements of Mario Bauza, the father of modern Afro-Hispanic jazz in the U.S. This outstanding album, recorded in 1957, the same year that Tito Puente cut his historic Top Percussion sessions and Israel "Cachao" Lopez laid down his influential descargas. Named in honor the African country, Kenya, with pianist Rene Hernandez and A.K. Salim contributing compositions and arrangements, swings with the ancestral anthems that fueled the best Afro-inspired dances. "Wild Jungle" is a roaring rumba capped by special guest Doc Cheatham's zesty trumpet solo. The title track is an elegant Palladium-style lullaby graced by tenor saxophonist Ray Santoz's Lester Young lilt, and the Florida-born Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's Charlie Parker-like alto-sax riffs fly on "Oyeme," with another American, trumpeter Joe Newman. On the bata-drum-driven blues "Congo Mulence," Adderley and Newman create inspired solos off of the clave, highlighting the wonderful Afro-American and Afro-Cuban musical language Machito spoke and swung so well. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Hot!.......2007-05-23

This recording doesn't come close to showing its age. Sound quality is fabulous, and the sizzling Cuban beats and hot musicianship will have you up and dancing.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected........2006-11-02

I was a little disappointed in this. I thought the CD would have an African flair, or at the very least, would sound "latin". I thought it sounded more like just big band jazz, but with no latin sound. For example, Machito's "Tanga" I really love, but there was nothing remotely like this on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" MACHITO CD !! .......2006-05-24

As it says above, truly a "MUST HAVE" CD for any lover / true collector of Afro-Cuban-Be-Bop Jazz. One of, if not "the best" recordings of the perfect combination of Afro-Cuban and 1957 Be-Bop!
AWESOME big band arrangements by pianist Rene Hernandez and A.K. Salim! Doc Cheatham in the Trumpet section, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley plays a KILLER Be-Bop alto-sax! And of course the percussion mastery of 'Candido Camero', 'Jose Mangual', and 'Ubaldo Nieto'
The beauty of the Kenya sessions is that they were done in 1957... when hard Bop and Afro-Cuban ruled! This CD for under $7.00 is a steal! Rated 10 stars! **********

Havana-born bandleader-singer Frank Raul Grillo, a.k.a. Machito (or simply Macho), may not have achieved the same level of mass appeal as Xavier Cugat (for whom he played and sang in the '30s), but his fusion of African and Latin rhythms with the improvisational bent of New York's postwar bebop scene would have a huge and lasting impact on Latin music. The 20 tracks gathered here date to the early and mid '50s, an era that saw Machito's musical peak and the exploding popularity of Latin rhythms neatly coincide. Partnered with his classically trained brother-in-law Mario Bauza, Macho and his band bounded through swinging, jazzed- up takes on "Sambia," the staple "Adios," and the de facto mambo anthem "Mambo Inn"; harmonized with the Skylarks on a vocal tribute to the Savoy Ballroom ("Mambo à la Savoy"); engaged in some saucy sexual innuendo with Graciela on the live high jinks of "Si Si, No No"; and even made room for Columbia A&R man Mitch Miller's oboe on the aptly named "Oboe Mambo." With its infectious Latin rhythms and loose-limbed bebop and swing seasonings, this music has a remarkable contemporary resonance that eclipses transient lounge revivalism; small wonder many Latin musicians hail Machito as "the Godfather." --Jerry McCulley

The CD is very good , but lacks some of machito's songs that made him famous.

but I can't give this CD five stars because there are too many slow numbers, would have preferred to hear all uptempo numbers, but that is my personal bias. But the ones that are here are great! These recordings are all from the 50's when the Machito Orchestra really had it nailed down.

5 out of 5 stars I am biased... after all Pepito Arvelo was my uncle.......2002-11-22

This album has great timeless music. Before the latin craze of Ricky Martin, Shakira and Enrique Iglesias, these guys were setting the stage for La Vida Loca...

4 out of 5 stars good and proper.......2003-08-07

Like all of Briton's Proper labels 4 cd box sets this offers a helluva lot of music for a terrific price! And, as always, it's music recorded in the 40's and sound quality ranges all the way from murky to acceptable and some good. But, if you are a fan of Latin Jazz, or a Machito worshipper [how can ya love Latin Jazz and not worship Machito? He was the best!], you will want this box set. Just for historical reasons, it offers pretty much a conclusive assembally, and on the nightclub recordings from BirdLand in New York, the searing heat and powerful jazz makes it through even though the one mike recordings from the radio are frustrating.

5 out of 5 stars Machito at the Crescendo.......2000-01-13

Just a few words to express that this album is excelent for the hobby Salsa dancer who likes dancing guajira and mambo. Personally, I like Mahitos' songs too much but specially this album because it is composed of good mambos and guajiras. Specifically commenting upon the songs, the song "Almendra" is the best for me. The song "No Tiene Telarana" is good to the listener as well as guajira dancers. A last commentary, Machito is considered in Puerto Rico as one of the greater masters of Salsa music.

5 out of 5 stars Machito at the top of his form.......1998-09-30

Albums like this reminds us that there *was* a world where musicians performed live and delivered the goods. Machito's strengths are shown to excellent advantage here. "Cuban Fantasy" is a tour-de-force. "Almendra" is delightfully sly. Machito's take on Mile's Davis "Pent-Up House" makes you remember why "Latin-Jazz" used to matter and not a synonym for homogenized jive. Graciella's soulful vocals on "Alma Con Alma" and "Ayer Lo Vi Llorar" testify to the inherent heartache beneath the surface. If you needed a reason to live, "Jamaicuba" would be good place to start. In conclusion, not a bad track on the CD.

One of the key innovators in Latin jazz, percussionist Frank "Machito" Grillo fused deep percussive grooves with high-intensity horn sections and work by some of the greatest soloists of his era. These 24 sides, made in 1948 and '49 for producer Norman Granz's Clef label, are among the most striking examples of the form. Perfect for both listening and dancing, tracks such as "Asia Minor," "Gone City," and "Mambo Jambo" are endlessly fascinating. The truest test of Mucho Macho, however, may be the cheesily titled number "Hall of the Mambo King" and the covers of "Tea for Two" and "The World Is Waiting for Sunrise," which are nearly as powerful as everything else here. --Rickey Wright

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Machito & His Orchestra- "Mucho Macho".......2000-10-16

This is a great compilation most likely taken from mint condition 78 rpm singles recorded for Norman Granz' "CLEF" label in 1948 and 1949 in NYC. During those glorious years the Machito Jazz Band was at its peak, under the skillful musical direction of the great Mario Bauza, who at the time also lead the orchestra's trumpet section. The only flaw I find with this re-issue is that the sound quality needed improvement and didn't receive it. In re-issuing these priceless recordings, better masters should've been sought. Other than that it is perhaps the best compilation of Machito 1940's recordings. "Un Poquito de Tu Amor", "Asia Minor", "Cleopatra's Rhumba", "Llora Timbero", "Donkey Serenade',"St.Louis Blues",etc. are all masterpieces, the orchestration and musical arrangements and percussion are simply outstanding, but then that's what made the Machito Band outstanding and perhaps the best at that time. Don't miss this great CD.
