Cuban bassist, composer, and bandleader Israel "Cachao" Lopez embodies the history of modern Cuban music. In the late 1930s, he and his brother Orestes, a pianist and composer, reworked the old danzon and created the revolutionary mambo. By the time the world was catching up to it, 20 years later, he was on to another innovation, leading descargas, Latin jam sessions. He has anchored nearly every significant group in Latin music in the U.S. over the past 35 years, from Machito to Gloria Estefan. Master Sessions, released in 1994 and featuring a superb cast including reedman Paquito D'Rivera, percussionist Francisco Aguabella, flutist Nestor Torres, and timbalero Orestes Vilato, represented Cachao's long overdue rediscovery. The program includes danzones, decargas, rumbas, and even an Ernesto Lecuona piece. The music here is as down-home wise and deceptively simple as the man at the bottom of it. Musical lessons are rarely as rich and delightful. --Fernando Gonzalez

5 out of 5 stars A Master's Piece.......2007-03-23

POWERFUL! ... TOP NOTCH ARRANGEMENTS! ... In this album, you get a truly masterful performance from Cachao and company. In this offering he is surrounded by a roster of talent that has only been equaled twice before in the very rich history of latin music. Those other recordings are as follows; 1. "Estrellas Areito vol. 1 - 4", Areito label and 2. Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nueyorquino vol. 1 - 2", Salsoul label. To say that it is the among the very best Cuban music EVER recorded is truly an understatement, from the opening track to the very last one, what one gets is Afro-cuban music played with a pure passion and love. It is obvious just by listening that the musicians in this album played with their hearts exposed. I was not present at the recording but i know that the head charts and arrangements were used only to begin each session. It is physically impossible to write and then have each member play the music contained in this recording. An improvisers paradise. It is very rare for musicians to find themselves in a setting where all of their emotions flow with electrically charged passion as with this album. As a collector of Cuban music, I have heard most of what has been recorded. This ranks among the very best of them all (...and there are 1000's of excellent records of Cuban music). If you are just discovering Cuban music, this is a perfect place to begin exploring. For those already baptized, GET THIS ONE!

5 out of 5 stars Essential latin music.......2005-02-26

This CD should be in the collection of every latin music lover. It should be a required study material for those who want to make salsa. No, it's not salsa but rather father mambo, mother guajirra, aunt descarga, and grandma rumba.
The musician lineup is spectacular including Jimmy Bosch(trombone) and Nestor Torres(flute). And all of these under the man who created mambo and descarga. Cachao masterfully utilizes the skills of these experts to redo some of his old songs, and perform new ones.
Unfortunately the complexities in the music can only be heard in a high end sound system, so don't buy this CD to listen to it while you drive to your favorite latin club, unless you own a Benz. Another detail that makes it different is that the songs flow for as long as they must rather than be rushed to the four minute industry standard.
For those who are only aquainted with modern latin music, expect the same instrumentation as Salsa, but with a more classical feel where vocals come second to the instruments. After listening to this CD you will be able to dissect most Salsa and further understand where it falls stylistically.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the very best cuban music ever.......2003-10-15

The quality of the sound and the magical expertise of some of the best musicians from Cuba come together in this album.
This is what we call "the real thing"... as real and as good as it can possibly be...
This is definitely a must have album for anyone, like me, who treasures the tropical music of the Caribbean and Latin America.
I also recommend the Volume II of the Master Sessions just as highly. These are some of the best collector's CD's money can buy...
If it was possible, I would give it six stars out of five!

5 out of 5 stars LATIN BEST OF THE BEST.......2003-08-05

this is my third copy bougth on this ALBUM and the music is still frech, like taken out of the island for the first time, even tought i have not been there, Cachao's music takes you there by the sounds and the rithm. i always gonna be a fan and continue to hear his music.

5 out of 5 stars a great Latin jazz album.......2002-02-19

First of all, I love the bass. Second of all, I love Latin music and Latin jazz. Well, that means that his album is one of my all time favorites -- it swings! Not only is every track great, the recording is very high quality and will highlight any audiophile system. I have scores of great Latin music, but this is one of the CDs I keep coming back to time after time. Israel Lopez is one of the world's greatest living bass players (his nickname is Cachao) -- I've been meaning to buy volume 2 as well which should be just as good. This one is a winner.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Volume I.......2003-10-10

Usually, when you pick up a CD by Artist X emblazoned with "Volume II," you expect: okay, here are the tunes that weren't good enough to make the first cut, and since the first CD was a success and we've already got these additional tunes in the can, let's make a few more bucks off this deal.

Thankfully, this is far from the truth with Cuban bassist Israel Lopez, a.k.a. 'Cachao,' producer Andy Garcia (yes, *that* Andy Garcia), and executive producer Emilio Estevez, Jr. While I never really connected with Volume I, this 1995 release of Volume II is something I have played over and over and over again. That's really saying something about the quality of Vol. II, since Vol. I was, after all, nothing short of a Grammy award-winning release.

Unluckily, this CD came out right around the same time as almost simultaneous releases from Buena Vista Social Club, Afro-Cuban All-Stars, and pianist Ruben Gonzalez. So Cachao, Vol. II got a little buried in the wave of publicity that accompanied all that. But the good news for the hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of fans of those releases is what a surprise you have waiting for you with Cachao, Master Sessions Vol. II. It's the perfect background music for your next little get-together.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2001-03-08

I absolutely love this CD. The rich African beat along with the latin mix make this a mesmerizing experience. I recommend both Volumes 1 and 2. I first heard this music after watching Dance With Me and I had to own both volumes. Thank you Cachao for sharing your special gift.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely marvelous.......1999-09-27

As a latina woman, Cachao brings us back to our roots. Africa. He incorporates everything from heavy percussions to african chants. It makes you want to dance, dance, dance!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars quite simply, a genuis.......1999-09-04

I am hardly an expert, and only know what I enjoy; but it is quite cleat that Cachao has great musical imagination. Is that Cuban klezmer on the opening track?

5 out of 5 stars Cachao: the originator of the Latin Caribbean sound........1999-04-14

Cachao, a cuban, was the originaot of what is now known as Salsa. His danzones, mambos, and descargas are known world-wide as being the best of the best. He is also deemed one of the greatest bassists of our time. His music in this album is excellent, especially "Spoon Lips." Well worth every penny sent.

Bassist Israel "Cachao" Lopez put mambo as well as the jazzy jam sessions known as descargas on the map. The Miami-based actor/percussionist Andy Garcia resurrected him from obscurity with the popular Master Sessions recordings in the 1990s. This CD and DVD, recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, is Cachao's fourth collaboration with Garcia. The ageless bandleader's deep arco and pizzicato basslines anchor an all-star group, which includes salsa trombonist Jimmy Bosch, timbalero Orestes Vilato, and tresguitarist Neslon Gonzalez. They lay down the Afro-Cuban rhythms that range from the changui to the rumba. "Mambo Cambio de Swing" links Havana to Harlem, while "Guajira Clasica" marries Bartokian style with the Cuban countryside. "Queja Africana/Protesta Abakua" is laced with Justo Almario's Coltrane-tinged saxophone and completes the transcultural influences of this great musician. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Chucho El Cubano.......2006-05-29

I have been listening to Cachao for years and I have all his music. I think this is his best album to date. Yes, I love Master Sessions I and II, but this album gets the most playing time at my house, my car, and my office. Cachao's rendition of "Si me pudieras querer" is just plain beautiful, and "Una Descarga a Cachao" gets my wife and me dancing every time. This is a great album of Cuban music, so enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Cachao pega con otro.......2005-03-28

2 out of 5 stars Sounds good.......2005-02-15

This album is good. The music is timeless and it's just as good as all of Cachaos other albums. I also recommend Angel Melendez and the 911 Mambo Orchestra's self titled debut for something a little more refreshing.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing new here, but the Power is Undeniable. .......2004-09-25

Alright. Cachao has a new one. I have loved his music since I first heard him around 10 years ago. On this album, he is doing what he has always done - nothing really out of the ordinary. It has been done before, and just as good. But, for some reason, I do not get tired of it. The power, the swing of the music is still as compelling as ever. And, as opposed to the other reviewer, I don't think the production is bad at all. Cachao's previous CD, "Cuba Linda" sounded great, and so does this one. If you like Cachao, you will like this album. While it offers nothing new, it is still worth a try, especially because of the DVD. I found it to be quite good in offering an inside look at the conception of the music, and the performances are great. Cachao may not be breaking new ground, but no one can deny he is still the master of Afro-Cuban styles he helped create. Cachao is the uncle of Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, who made quite a unique CD you should check out. As for Cachao,Sr., he is still making what he does best, and I am grateful for that.

5 out of 5 stars When Cachao plays danzon you have to listen...........2003-07-25

If you are not familiar with the Cuban danzon then let me give you a two sentence introduction. It starts with a rather French-influenced 19th century "Cuban" melody (or often an adaptation from a classical source) played by the violins and flute over the flowing timbale's "baqueteo". Oh is that a cool old school sound! Then it transitions into the "cha-cha" and before you know it you are taken away by this marvelous music.
Whether you are familiar with the danzon or not you must know that Cachao is probably the biggest and baddest danzon player around. You have to listen to this recording and if you get infected by the danzon bug then also get "Danzones de Ayer y Hoy" from Orquesta Aragon...remember "hasta la reina Isabel baila el danzon..."

Octogenarian Cuban legend Israel "Cachao" Lopez returns with Cuba Linda, another five-star album produced by actor Andy Garcia, who did the same for the earlier Master Sessions volumes one and two. Bassist-composer Cachao leads an outfit that near-magically blends subtlety and power; anyone with an ear for this meld of mambo, son, and other classic styles will be hooked within the first two cuts. "Goza Mi Mambo Cubano" ("Rejoice with My Cuban Mambo") hits its height with a flurry of percussive devices midway through, while the lyrics of "A Francisquita le Gusta el Cusube" ("Francisquita Loves the Cusube") turn on playful sex/food metaphors as trumpeter Feliciano "Pachu" Gomez unleashes some mighty wails. It's also easy to appreciate how the band rips through "Bailalo Si Puedes" before leaning into a tropical take on Rhapsody in Blue: Cuba Linda's melange of textures, rhythms, and unique soloists is indeed in the Ellingtonian tradition the disc's liner notes claim for Cachao. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great album - a continuation of his 'Master Sessions'.......2004-03-21

This is a great album from the guy who invented Mambo. 'Cuba Linda' is a logical progression on the 'Master Sessions' albums. This album has a different feel than the 'Master Sessions' albums - a little more spontaneous and lively. 'Cuba Linda' is a bit more upbeat - Cachao plays everything from Danzon, ChaChaCha, Abakua, Son, among others. The musicians are great, masters from Luis Conte to Orestes Vilato join Cachao. I also recommend 'Dos', 'Descargando', 'Master Sessions, Vol. 1 & 2'. In fact, anything from Cachao is well worth investing.

This was my first introduction to Cuban music - what a fantastic choice! I've danced around to it while making dinner for friends and played it in the background while I'm working on the computer. I really love music that has a fun beat but isn't distracting. Thanks to this CD, I look forward to exploring more Cuban music (maybe a compilation album for my new one).

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!.......2000-08-17

I must say, his albums get better every time:) This is very nice and passionate, And I personally like the bajo instrument. It's a must have.

One question, is he related to to that other bass player Orlando "Cachaíto" López from the Buena Vista Social Club?

I think so, but I'm not sure.

5 out of 5 stars The master, again.......2000-06-05

Israel " Cachao" Lopez is a musical icon, who contributed heavily to the magnificent musical legacy of Cuba. He comes from a famous family, and helped to launch the mambo musical form. Listeners who have come to Cuban music via Saint Ry should check this out.

        5 out of 5 stars soul of Afro-Latino people.......1999-06-20

For those who love Afro-Cuban music and are familiar with Cacahao's music are going to enjoy this album. The wooden flute sounds great and the percussion makes you feel like moving your body in a slow and natural rhythm similar to those ancient people who loved themselves and whose drums connected them with the heart of our planet. In the song 'Centro San Agustin' you can feel and almost hear the beautiful sounds that come from the peoples heart in a village square. Cachao's music is the epitome of the wonderful culture that was born from centuries of love, hate, war, peace, destruction, forgiveness, passion, and tropical beauty.
