Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Great spin on contemporary tunes Don't buy the itunes version!.......2007-07-29

If you are going to buy this, make sure you buy on amazon! The itunes version doesn't include all the songs the CD version does.

Buena Vista has done it again. Cold play's and the Jack Johnson tune's are my favorite. The best tracks are the ones where the artist gave the group all the masters separated by tracks allowing these guy to really do their magic. Some songs seem like they just grabed the original version of the song and pasted a Latin rythem on top.

3 out of 5 stars Rhythms Del Mundo.......2007-07-15

It's a good idea and not bad for the effort. The songs while some work very well ,the others were just a good try . I can see what they were trying to do. Anyway it's for a good purpose

5 out of 5 stars Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba.......2007-07-05

I love this CD. Every cut is good. I can clearly appreciate the original artist and the Latin beat at the same time. I am so pleased to have a CD that every cut is good and I don't have to stop what I am doing in the cafe to skip a cut when the player is on scramble.

4 out of 5 stars Great Salsa/Pop Fusion CD.......2007-07-04

The fusion of well known pop artists (ie; U2, Coldplay, etc.) and Buena Vista Social Club totally works on this great CD.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing...buy something else.......2007-06-01

This is disappointing...a few of the remakes are ok. Some cuts are intolerably poor. The overal quality is poor and it is not as advertised.

Album Description

These recordings of Santería drumming and singing rituals feature four Cuban Santería groups calling the gods (orishas) by performing rythmic sequences called orus. Recorded in the Cuban provinces of Matanzas and Havana City in 1983-1984, these ceremonies and drums have their roots in the ancient Yoruba religion of Africa and are rarely heard outside of Cuba. Notes in English and Spanish. 24 tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Music for Ritual Use.......2000-11-18

The liner notes which are written in Spanish do not provide a person who is not familiar with Santeria with enough details. The intiates in the various houses of worship are secretive about thier specific rituals. Because the "Seven Powers of Africa," are well known in Cuba outside of the Lukumi devotees, the music is offered as a type of ethnomusicology recording for outsiders. If you are working with a specific Orisha in front of your Altar put this CD on and chant with the sacred drummers. This CD can aid worshipers in asking the spirits to come down. It is like a Gospel record for a Baptist.

This cd is an invaluable resource for those interested in the rhythm and song traditions of cuban santeria. A collection of field recordings documenting cojuntos in matanzas and havana. This cd is raw but authentic.

Album Description

Music is one way Cuban Lucumí (descendants of African slaves) have retained cultural ties to Africa. During the 19th century these descendants established cabildos, mutual aid and social societies based on African ethnic "nations" under the sponsorship of the Roman Catholic Church. These cabildos, found mainly in urban areas, were officially disbanded in the early 1900s but many continued on, providing an outlet for a Cuban Yoruba religion, combining Catholic and African-based religious elements. The Yoruba pantheon of gods called orishas provided the basis for these religious cults known as Santeria (also called Lucumí) and the drum ensembles that traditionally accompanied religious rituals in West Africa were modified into the Cuban batá drum trios heard in these recordings. (Marks 2001; Rodríguez 1998)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A vivid treasure from the past.......2006-03-11

Great collection of African religious music performed live in Havana by actual descendents of the Yoruba slaves brought to Cuba. These recordings capture a unique instance in time of a great culture. A must for any studious and admirer of black traditions in the New World.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Authentic.......2005-08-11

This recording is totally and beautifully authentic. With thirty
seven tracks, it's also quite a lot. The primary limitation is
the recording technology of 1957. Although it is not as tinny
sounding as most of the field recordings from around that time,
it does not, for example, come anywhere near expressing in sound fidelity, the beautiful melodies and harmonies that actually
come out of the bata drums. The many nuances and especially the
sweet bell tones typical of the bata ensemble don't quite come through, principally because of the limitations of the recording technology. Also, song number five is listed in your sampler as
for Obatala/Odudua; actually the sample is for Nana Buruku--Mother of Blessings and Curses. Nonetheless, this is a wonderful little treasure, especially for anyone who knows or wants to know about the Yoruba and other West aAfrican roots of Cuban, and actually of all African-American, music. For me it is a collector's item.

By the way, referring to some of the descriptions of the songs
that accompany the recording: Lucumi is an old dialect of the
West African Yoruba language which carried to Cuba due to slavery, and in Yoruba it means "my friend". So this is the music of 'My Friend' societies. The music and rituals presented on this recording are pure Old World West African, without needing any reference whatsoever to European Catholicism. Ironically though, this same Catholicsm actually originated in the same religious practices of North Africa which migrated into West Africa and developed into the Yoruba Mysteries which the enslaved Africans then carried into the Americas. This is one reason why Spanish and Portuguese music and religious culture
blend in such a savory way with West African culture in the Caribbean and Latin America. Modupue (Yoruba: I thank you!)

4 out of 5 stars Amazing recordings but tracks are mislabeled.......2005-11-25

The album is based on recordings made by Katherine Dunham in the 1950s. For people interested in traditional religious music of the African Diaspora this album is an important resource, especially since many styles have changed since she made the recordings. Beware, however! ALL OF THE HAITIAN MUSIC TRACKS ARE MISLABELED.

The track labeled Mahi is actually Ibo; the track labeled Petro Kita is actually Yanvalou; The track labeled Ibo is Mahi; The track labeled Yanvalou is Petro.

Given the radical differences among these rhythms, it's important to get them right!

5 out of 5 stars Summer Cruisin' Music.......2005-02-19

Somehow I got the bug in my bonnet that I had to fill my CD collection with inordinate amounts of lounge music. So as I was flipping through the disks at my local used CD store, I ran across an entry in the Ultra-Lounge series as well as this accidental goodie tucked away like a dirty little secret. At first I was going to pass it by, but I caved and threw it in with the stack of other lounge goodies I found. I wasn't dissappointed. I can't wait for the weather to heat up so I can crank this in the car and cruise. The title says it all, Latin Rhythmns in Hi-Fi indeed. If this music doesn't get to you, then I'm afraid you have no soul. Don't be a square, if you run across this collection, pick it up. If you don't I'm afraid there's no hope for you daddy-o.

Not the strongest title in this series, the music on this CD is a bit too frenetic for background music, too obscure for casual fans of Latin exotica. This CD is certainly enjoyable in measured doses, but 14 straight tracks of ping-ponging stereo bongos and timbales can be a bit wearing. Since Amazon hasn't listed the performers, here they are (by track numbers) : 1. Augie Colon, 2. Miguelito Valdez and His Orch. with Machito and His Afro-Cubans, 3. Xavier Cugat featuring Lina Romay, 4. Yma Sumac, 5. Hugo Montenegro, 6. Perez Prado, 7. John Buzon Trio, 8. Lenny Dee, 9. Orizaba and His Orch., 10. Richard Hayman, 11. Sir Julian, 12. Hugo Montenegro, 13. Belmonte and His Afro-American Music, 14. Duke Ellington. Spectacular cover, by the way.
