5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I love this CD. The day I got it I turned off the lights and played it to relax and be surrounded by the music. Since then I love having it on as background music whenever I feel the need to escape.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2002-10-24

Erich kunzel has recorded a wonderfully exhilerating item this time! Wonderfully exhuberant is mild compared to the lively playing Kunzel always gets from this great orchestra! Arrangements are mostly by Tommy Newsome who knows how to write charts of varying degrees of excellence, particularly the winsome "Girl from Ipanema" which compliments the lyrics endless reflections on a beautiful, bikini-clad young woman. "Sweet and Gentle" is a saucy number while Eric Knight, the only arranger to get the Boston Pops under Fiedler to swing to new heights, contributes an unforgettably boisterous account of "Lambada." The sound is full of punch and contrast. And Doc Severinsen plays in "Virgen" a marvelous soloistic stratospheric account. My advice is to buy this immediately. It's one hot album!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful arrangements of music from all over the world........2001-10-26

Telarc and Eric Kunzel never fail to amaze at the quality of their selections.

Even tough some of the arrangements here have a little too much
fanfare at the start they are still great to listen to.

Most of these melodies you have heard them at least once in you life. And they are reproduced here with the Kunzel magic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection of Music.......2001-10-26

A Beautiful collection of music from all over the world.
(latin world that is)

I little grandiose on some selections (that's kunzel) but GREAT nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC MUSIC! PERCY FAITH'S GIFT TO THE WORLD!.......2000-08-25

This incredible rendition of the Music of Mexico has been my very favorite album ever! I fell in love with this music from the very first moment that I heard it! I have worn out three vinyl copies of this album since it came out in 1957 and have waited until just this year for it to come out in the digital cd format. This is one of those incredible albums in which each and every number on both sides is excellently done! In my opinion, this album depicts "The Music of Mexico" at its best...it just doesn't get any better than this!! Percy Faith received an award from the Government of Mexico for this great work of art! Buying this album one can't possibly go wrong! It is simply a blue-chipper album that is in a league of its own! VIVA! ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars "Maestro Faith's performances captivate & mesmerize fans".......2002-02-22

When very young, heard this exciting arrangement of "DELICADO" with harpsichord flowing up and down the corridors of my school...our music teacher was playing something that grabbed me immediately...had to hear more, and more was enough to hook me, but good!

Composer/Arranger/Artist extraordinaire PERCY FAITH was a God sent...he changed my life completely...which brings us to the CD "Passport To Romance" and "Mucho Gusto!", the later title is one of my all-time favorites...not only can Faith arrange for Strings, but "Latin-American Music" is his cup of tea.

Let's look at stand outs ~ "BONJOUR TRISTESSE"(Thorn/Ruccione), latin rhythms slowing seep into the beautiful strings and Faith's orchestration..."A THEME FROM THE THREEPENNY OPERA"(Brecht/Weill), wonderful counterpoints and passages as instrumentally high, but we remember Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald singing this classic known as "Mack The Knife"..."BREAD, LOVE AND DREAMS", sounds like the opening to Elmer Bernstein's "The Magnificent Seven", but the tempo takes over with entire orchestra responding to a wonderful theme..."SCALINATEELA(Stay After School)"(Cioffi), romance is in the air, very much like the "Zorro" television theme, with Latin rhythmic blends well and Faith's terrific arrangement(played this one over and over again)...likewise with "SIERRA MADRE(Luna Gitana)"

Highlights abound with "SOMBRA"(Merveilleux)(Desbois/Mistraki), tango creeps into the picture, and it's intoxicating with running strings as counter-balanced through brass and percussion..."MARIA ELENA"(Barcelata), a constant tune that has been recorded by many, but never with the elegance of this cue..."PERFIDIA"(Dominguez), also places into that category of a standard in genre of Latin Music recorded by various artists, Percy gives this a flowing arrangement with brass, strings and percussion sounding off..."ADIOS MARIQUITA LINDA"(Jiminez), this is a tune you've heard, but can never place it, listen to the blending of this renowned orchestra, with the baton of conductor Faith is pure poetry...Percy Faith's music is timeless!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Faith.......2001-09-29

Finally, a cd reissue of two great Faith albums that have been released in their entirety. Mucho Gusto was the follow up to Faith's legendary Viva! album. Viva is the better of the two albums, but it is a treat to have this album back in circulation. Passport to Romance is unique in the Faith repertory, in that he uses an accordian. The accordian was used regularly by Faith's competitor, Mantovani. Passport to Romance has splendid arrangements of songs from Europe, much like Faith's other classic album, Bon Voyage! A great cd issue of classic instrumental music!! Highly reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars FROM THE PACIFIC TO SOUTH OF THE BORDER.......2001-05-07

A GREAT EXAMPLE TO ENJOY "LE FLAVOUR DE LA FRANCE" BEAUTIFUL ARRENGEMENTS TO FRENCH MUSIC, NOT ONLY ROMANCE. THE MUSIC OF MEXICO, MY HOMELAND, WHAT A WONDERFUL SOUND OF THE TRADITIONAL MARIACHI MUSIC. THE CLASSIC PIECE OF MONCAYO, HUAPANGO, ORIGINALLY WRITTEN FOR SYMPHONIC ORCHSTRA WENT ALL AROUND THE WORLD THANKS TO PERCY FAITH PERFORMANCE. VERY MUCH RECOMMENDED AND A GOOD INTRODUCTION NOT ONLY TO MEXICAN MUSIC, BUT ALSO FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD. BUY THIS ALBUM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art!.......1999-12-12

If music is art, than this CD is a masterpiece. Percy Faith has had many releases of his famed Theme from a Summer Place, but here we get classic orchestral pop sounds that haven't been heard since the LP days. Passport To Romance includes some fun songs..Little Bells and Big Bells...The Portuguese Washerwoman for example. Some are just beautifully haunting, like Merry Go Round or The Little Lost Dog. You may not recognize all of the songs, but they will certainly become favorites if you love instrumentals by a huge orchestra. The second half of the CD is Mucho Gusto! This was Percy's second album of Mexican Music and the accent is on favorite latin tunes like Besame Mucho, Maria Elena, and Cielto Lindo. Percy Faith was quite prolific in his work, so I hope that Collectables releases many more works by this guy, one of my very favorites!
