Denis Leary's stance as an unregenerate, chain-smoking, meat-eating, angry young man is intense, to say the least. But his act made him a star for one reason: His jokes are funny. No Cure for Cancer is drawn mostly from Leary's one-man show of the same name, which is full of tough love for '90s therapy-addicted crybabies, and no-holds-barred advice for idiots (which is to say, anyone who gets in Leary's way). Head for the hills when he picks up a guitar, as he does on several ill-advised comedic songs here, but listen up when Leary's straight talk makes perfect (and hilarious) sense. To crack addicts, for example, his message is simple: "Never do a drug named after a part of your own ass." --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

Has not held up over the years........2007-01-10
Fallen Idol.......2006-06-11
Do read 'American Scream' (biography of Bill Hicks)to learn about a comic with REAL integrity who truly 'played from the heart', as he was so found of urging us all to do. Then see if Leary's erzatz imitation does much for you.
And yes, it doesn't look too good that the end of Leary's stand-up career coincided with Hicks's death.
I say this reluctantly because I have only looked into the matter recently, and have actually been a fan of Leary for 14 years, both as stand-up and actor - but once you check out Hicks's work and look into the facts, it's hard to have respect for Leary any more.
The amazing thing is that he got away with it.
Big Fat Dead Guy in a Bathtub.......2006-03-04
We drink and we sing
And we drink and we sing
Hey!
We drink and we drive
And we puke and we drink
Hey!
We drink and we fight
And we bleed and we cry
Hey!
We puke and we smoke
And we drink and we die
Hey!
Then we finished things off with Leary's "Thank you for calling. Thank you for calling" from the stand up portion of the album.
I can also thank Leary for keeping me off drugs. After blaming his bell bottoms and other poor judgments on weed I knew I should stay away from the stuff. As Leary once said "never do a drug named after your own (expletive deleted)." Plus I also learned from him at an early age that the bet drugs are the legal ones. I always look forwards to cold season so I can start taking NyQuil and sing "NyQuil, NyQuil, Nyquil, we love you, you giant (expletive deleted) Q." And I would never have learned about whippits had it not been for Leary. And thanks to his soliloquy on meat, I didn't eat a salad until about three years ago.
Even though he's best known for drugs and smoking, I think the best part of the album was when he went on his musical diatribe:
Explain it to me. Heavy Metal bands on trial because kids commit suicide? What's that about? Judas Priest on trial because "my kid bought the record, and listened to the lyrics ....." Well that's great! That sets a legal precedent. Does that mean I can sue Dan Folgerberg for making me into a (expletive deleted) in the mid-70's. Is that possible, huh? Huh?! "Your honor, between him and James Taylor, I didn't get a (expletive deleted) 'till I was 27 years old. I was in Colorado wearing hiking boots eating granola."
But thanks to the uber-depressing grunge music, I typically change it to Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain while in Seattle wearing flannels shirts and drinking cappuccinos to fit my experience. And whenever election time rolls around and I debate on whether I should vote I think of two things Joe (expletive deleted) Walsh.
So with St. Patrick's Day quickly approaching, stop by McDonalds, pick up a Shamrock Shake and throw on some Leary and sing along to the Traditional Irish Folk Song.
Dennis Leary has a career because there's no cure for cancer..........2006-02-15
Then yesterday I picked up "Relentless" by Bill Hicks, and I am furious. Huge portions of Leary's cd are ripped off almost word-for-word from Bill Hicks' material. I had heard the rumors that there were some similarities, but I liked Dennis Leary, and I didn't want to believe it. Now I wish I'd never bought No Cure for Cancer and contributed money in his direction.
If James Frey can be brow-beaten on national tv for making up elements of his memoir "A Million Little Pieces", Dennis Leary should have gotten similar treatment YEARS ago for being a dirty stinking thief.
Listen to the two comics side-by-side and its undeniable. The only reason Leary got away with it is that Bill Hicks died in 1994 of (how ironic!) CANCER.
Shameless.

Along with Kiss Me, Kate, 1934's Anything Goes is usually thought to be Cole Porter's finest show. Even without a young belter named Ethel Merman as the lead, the show's parade of hits ("I Get a Kick Out of You," "All Through the Night," "You're the Top," and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow") would have secured it a place in Broadway's pantheon. This recording is the first one to use the original 1934 arrangements, painstakingly reconstructed with the help of one of the original arrangers, Hans Spialek, and it also includes three songs cut from the original production. And the excellent cast does the London Symphony Orchestra and conductor John McGlinn proud: Kim Craswell is her usual powerhouse as Reno Sweeney (if only a little brittle around the edges sometimes), while mezzo Frederica von Stade smoothly adapts to musical theater as Hope Harcourt. All musical-theater lovers should have Anything Goes in their collection, and this recording is quite a worthy one. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
The Original, but not the Better.......2007-01-31
Anything Goes - Cole Porter.......2006-03-18
If you know any of these songs and want to hear them recorded with original orchestration, without anything added or taken away, and sung by very good singers, then this will fit the bill.
Orchestration is very good, nothing too lush or fancy, it just fits the words perfectly. And beautifully recorded.
The singers are all very good except for Jack Gilford who I personally thought was awful - but he only features once. Kim Criswell is exceptional.
With the CD comes a very informative booklet, giving full text of the lyrics, background to how the musical came to be written, and an explanation of the context of the topics covered by the songs.
I'm very glad I went to the trouble of getting this CD. If you want to hear Cole Porter's musical as it sounded originally, then get this!
An excellent additionto the Cole Porter fan's collection........2005-09-22
A PLEASANT SURPRISE . . . .......2005-08-07
I truly appreciate the authenticity of this (ANYTHING GOES) project. I only wish McGlinn and company had not approached the show with kid gloves, because it lacks the energy and immediacy of a good Broadway cast recording. There were times, when listening, I felt as I often do in a museum. The piece of art is a classic and much to be admired, but don't get too close. And you mustn't touch! Nevertheless, I highly recommend this recording. Kim Criswell deserves to be on your shelf along with Eileen Rodgers and Patti LuPone.
As close to the original 1934 performance as we'll ever get!.......2004-10-23
The later stage revivals (1962 and 1987) dropped some of the original songs and added other Cole Porter standards. While these versions play well on stage, there is something to be siad for hearing the original text and orchestrations. While no one can replace Ethel Merman's original star performance, it was not preserved because "original cast" albums were not being done in 1934. She did record some of the songs over the years but never with the original orchestrations. (Just think if EMI had made this set in the 1960s and brought Merman into the studio to record her interpretations! What a missed opportunity.) That said, Kim Criswell brings the requesite belt to Reno Sweeney's songs. Cris Groenendaal brings a pleasant light tenor to Billy Crocker's songs, and Frederica Von Stade (one of the few opera singers whose voice seems well suited to american musical theatre repretoire) is well suited to Hope's short musical scenes. As an ingenue, she doesn't get to sing all that much!
Not all is perfect. Jack Gilford was too old and frail having little voice left for Moonface Martin's number. And the Ambrosian singers sing correctly without having the proper "broadway" sound. Nevertheless, John McClinn conducts with precision, and the thick booklet is full of fascinating facts about the show, a detailed synopsis, all the lyrics and an amusing glossery explaing some of the obscure references in Porter's original lyrics.

Most Excellent.......2006-07-16
IT WAS MOST EXCELLENT, and I have been well pleased. I've had this for years and it still makes me happy. I agree with all the reviewers who comment that the bands changed the songs, made them their own, but still paid homage in a delicious manner. Some of the songs are better than others, but listen to Just like Heaven...it is really, really good.

Fun and Refreshing.......2006-03-05
Overall, the CD set was a wonderful surprise; I had expected a 2 CD set filled with well-sung music, but I was rewarded with a compilation as diverse as peoples' view of the holidays, ranging from the somber expression of religious value to the whimsical, with a jab at the commercial attitude in the middle!
