Writer-director Guy Ritchie's street-tough look at London's decrepit underworld and the unsavory dealings of four best friends whose cockiness is undercut by some serious trouble features a soundtrack of quick dialogue sound clips, a smattering of classic rock, pop, and reggae, and a few current submissions as well. Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves," known most to rock audiences by the Clash cover, is a great piece of political resistance and laidback dub groove. James Brown's "The Payback" and "The Boss" and Iggy and the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" stake out the sharp end, while the late Dusty Springfield paints the softer corner with "Spooky." Ocean Colour Scene delivers the backwards guitar driven "100 Mile High City," and Stretch's "Why Did You Do It?" is a great recreation of early '70s soul. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:

Based on Christopher Buckley's eponymous novel, Thank You for Smoking cynically and gleefully sends up the more PC aspects of our times. The first nine tracks are all golden oldies culled from a time--mostly the 1940s and 1950s--when smoke getting in your eyes was considered romantic, not second-hand poisoning, such as the Platters' version of Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"). Those familiar with kd lang's version of "Smoke Rings" will love the Mills Brothers' earlier version from 1932. The track is actual typical of the album, which not only offers those-were-the-days takes on smoking, but almost as many lessons on vocal styling. Group harmonies by the aforementioned Mills Brothers and the Swingle Singers' take on Bach's "Little Organ Fugue," for instance, are dazzling, while Patsy Cline ("Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray") and Otis Redding ("Cigarettes and Coffee") shine solo. In a completely different register, Jerry Reed's 1972 ode to addiction, "Another Puff," is punctuated by unappetizing coughs; Reed rasping lines "Give it to me! Give it to me! I love it! I love it! I love it!" and "You quit smoking, that'll leave more for me!" are followed by a maniacal laugh. The last four instrumental tracks consist of Rolfe Kent's original score; they maintain an appropriate lounge-lizardy mood but pale in comparison to the nuggets that precede them. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Lovelorn and yearning pop-punk with a smile.......2004-04-22
"Rubella," "Gotta Know Right Now," and "Need You Around" paint a picture of youthful, starstruck, obsession and longing. While sincere and snappy, these tunes also hint at an underlying insecurity and awkwardness indicating that the distance between the parties in question is likely farther than it seems. Regardless, the music chugs along, shimmering at times, with rather convincing Cheap Trick-style guitar solos abound. Themeatically, the album becomes a bit monotonous, and with such a brief set, that is definitely an offense worth noting. Some songs fall rather flat along the way, with "Can't Help the Teardrops from Getting Cried" being a particularly cringe-inducing mis-step. Although slightly less than stellar, this album does provide a delightful ride in which one can drop the top, crank the radio, and reminesce of that high school crush that you never could quite manage to catch up to.

Better than last Live album.......2006-04-06
In contrast with the older Live album..
-At Metro has better sound quality, and the Popes are technically BETTER At Metro than they were in 98'.
-At Metro is cheaper (though I recently saw the older Live album for $10 at a used cd shop)
-The older Live album has Josh's vocals buried somewhat in the drums and guitars.
-At Metro CD does NOT include a few songs that ARE on the dvd, great ones too like "no more smiles" and "mrs.you and me" (no more smiles IS however, on the old Live album)
-The cover art on the new one is dull though...haha
Overall, amazing introduction to the Popes and from what I've found (since I now have Born to Quit and 1991-1998) their songs are BEST when Live, At Metro will prove that!

live at the metro.......2006-04-02
the sound quality is absolutely fantastic and the video on the dvd is amazing. incredible quality all around. i don't think victory/the metro took the lighting design in to consideration when shooting the dvd as the mass amounts of reds tend to really wash everything out at times but that's a pretty minor complaint.
the song selection is great (though i was pretty bummed out when i found out that two of my favorite songs were DVD ONLY) and the performances are nearly flawless.
this blows the last live popes disc out of the water. a must for any punk/pop fan.
Smoking Popes Rock!.......2006-03-23
Underestimated band blows the audience away.......2006-03-16
Smoking Popes started out in Chicago as a poppy punk band. With each album their songs became more sophisticated, but they never lost their edge. The lyrics are intriguing and sometimes shockingly candid while the music rips and soars in all the right places.
This was a momentous show for fans and it's only right it should be preserved in album for for posterity.
My favorite songs here are: Paul, Need You Around, Pretty Pathetic, I Know You Love Me and Brand New Hairstyle.

Album Description
By turns hilarious and melancholy, rockin' and melodious, Jonathan Coulton's lovely ditties about vengeful nerds, ennui-afflicted clowns, partially-imagined historical figures, and devotees of a certain Swedish prefab furniture store are insanely clever without ever being too clever for their own good. They repeatedly lure you into laughing before suddenly breaking your heart. And the sick part is, you keep coming back. Coulton's is the voice of every spooky elementary school kid who could never quite keep his shirt tucked in or shoes tied; every lovelorn mason and mad scientist; every one of us who has ever sat despairingly on the floor, surrounded by parts of an Ikea endtable, weeping over our allen wrenches. (He also acquits himself beautifully in the ever-popular genre of odes to outdoor copulation.)Customer Reviews:

Chicago's Smoking Popes deliver another stellar batch of buzzsaw punk-pop anthems about love and love lost on their second major-label album. Josh Caterer's emotional crooning still sounds a lot like Morrissey's, but mopey teenagers would be much better off listening to the Popes than Moz, because the joy inherent in their tunes always points the way out for the worst case of the blues. (Just pogo a bit, and everything is sure to feel better.) "Let's hear it for promises and something sealed with a kiss/Let's hear it for big mistakes that you just couldn't resist," Josh sings in "Let's Hear It for Love," which is pretty much the band's theme song. But the group really won my heart with the cover of "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. How can you help but love these guys? --Jim DerogatisCustomer Reviews:

This post-punk jug band not only remembers when country wasn't cool, but revels in the era when folks like Glen Campbell and Bobbie Gentry ruled the pop charts. Mastermind Kurt Wagner uses pop-country as a jumping-off point for the skewed, sardonic observations about life in these post-postmodern times, delivered in his wry, half-spoken baritone. Wagner's characters have a decidedly pulp fiction feel about them- -particularly the ones sketched in "The Man Who Loved Beer" and "The Scary Caroler"--and his bandmates provide suitably sepia-toned landscapes for said eccentrics to play out their stories. The seamless manner in which the players make offbeat instrumentation-- heavy on the trombone, lap steel, and banjo--sound so natural and kitsch-free is the icing on the cake, and a guarantee that you needn't be a hipster to appreciate Lambchop. --David SpragueCustomer Reviews:
Very Chilled.......2006-06-19
It doesnt work immediatly, but then the best music never does. Once you are drawn into the atmospheric and laid back mood it takes you over. There is some fine songwriting and musicanship in there, and tracks like 'The scary Caroler' and 'The Man Who Loved Beer' are the real standouts.
4 stars - Don't want to bring the average down, but you can't give everything five stars.
Subtle but really incredible when you get it.......2004-03-13
At first, "How I Quit Smoking" might appear to be merely badly played orchestral music that has no emotional effect on a listener whatsoever. The instruments that back the sparse folk-rock band that Kurt Wagner and company assembled appear indeed to float in and out of the mix at random from Kurt Wagner's first soft and hard-to-hear vocal on "For Which We Are Truly Thankful". Whilst the sparse beauty of this is undeniable and its emotion unique, it is only on the fifth track "Life's Little Tragedy", that we see the ammner in which Kurt Wagner's eccentric chamber-folk has become a vehicle for what is not beautiful romance. Rather, the music serves as a perfect concealment to biting social commentary. Yet, unlike political punk bands, Lambchop's music has all the intimacy and folk group should: Kurt Wagner always is singing to the everyday person rather than just his fans.
The psychedelic, horn-laden "The Militant" is where "How I Quit Smoking" really takes off. The electric guitar is so soft and dense as to be a lurking complement to Wagner's lyric "he's directing his misinterpretation" and "any order, KKK". Even when one does not understand Kurt, it is clear to whom he is speaking. The discordant "All Smiles And Mariachi" showed Kurt to be actually capable of singing with real emotion behind a lurking drumbeat and guitar, whilst "The Scary Caroler" and "Smuckers" showed Wagner able to (like Shame MacGowan before him) use the most appropriate instrumentation to convey the truth behind the lives and wishes of the working class.
The second version of "The Militant" (track #10) is true druggy psychedelia that shows Kurt Wagner to be able to get angry seriously. The electric guitar on this version is remarkbly tuneful and the horns honk like few other albums, but still Lambchop managed to play as a unit like no other band. Deanna Varagona's plaintive voice here is an amazing contrast to the electric guitar, and this combination is seen again in a chilling manner on the chorus of "Garf". The closer "Again" strips "How I Quit Smoking" to its essence with a short instrumental consisting purely of strings.
Though this beautiful yet chilling album defies all notions of accessibility, it should prove, like Lambchop's unique 1994 debut "I Hope You're Sitting Down" to be one of the most rewarding purcheses among 1990s music.

I heard that hypnosis worked for some people, so I thought I would try this CD since it was one of the cheaper ones. I wasn't very motivated to quit. I wanted to see what hypnosis was like more than anything. But then I listened to the CD one evening and never touched a cigarette again. That was three months ago.
I can't say I never had a craving after that, but the stongest ones lasted less than a minute. It really helps to follow the directions and take breaks like normal, just instead of smoking, you're supposed to sip on some water. I find I'm reminded to breath a lot deeper then.
I highly recommend this CD to anyone whoes trying to quit.
