An Italian tenor in the tradition of the enormously popular Andrea Bocelli, Alessandro Safina has long been admired and championed in the Netherlands, though he's made light of by his native country. Now, with his American major label debut, a self-titled collection, Safina soars into the popera limelight, his darkly sensual vocals powerful, assured, and flat-out sexy. Melodically affecting in a manner oddly parallel to that of the Eminem/Dido vocal juxtaposition on "Stan," Safina opens with "Only You (Luna)," wherein his masculine posturing is underscored and buffeted by an angelic female vocal refrain until the song fairly bursts like showers of fireworks in an open canvas of sky. Starting with the bar quite high, Safina's pipes nonetheless maintain the emotional posture of the record throughout, positing the singer as dream tenor of the year. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars When is his next album ?.......2006-02-04

I found this wonderful voice from Moulin Rouge's soundtrack, track 4 - Your Song. I couldn't be happier when I got this album, but I have been wondering when his next album will be available.

I have no issue with Andrea Bocelli, nor with Josh Gorban, but Safina's voice just way too addictive to put it aside. It's the true Tenor that uses his voice to wrap around you with power and emotion in every note.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT TENOR.......2005-10-24

I love Mr. Safina's voice!Mr. Safina's vocal technique is without flaw(NOT a weak unsupported sound)but has plenty of back space(That produce rich full tones and incredible high notes.. unlike tenors that try to place tones and have no top worth talking about)take note of a perfect singer that can sing pop to GRAND opera. I wish He would make an album with opera arias. Mr Safina sounds like a modern day Caruso or Franco Corelli. He is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful voice, great voice - but who is the female vocalist?.......2005-08-09

I think the whole eponymous Alessandro Safina album is fantastic, and there isn't really anything I can add to the reviews that have been written. But I =do= want to know the name of the female vocalist on "Only You (Luna)". I heard the voice and the words singing "Only you can hear my soul..." while picking up some coffee one day, but instead of Alessandro Safina's voice coming in as I expected, the woman continued on with her song. On "Only You" the counterpoint of the two voices is magnificent, yet on her solo, whoever she is, the song was rich and bluesy. I'd like to buy her CD, too, if she has one. Does anyone know her name? It's not on the credits on Alessandro Safina's CD.

5 out of 5 stars Raves!.......2005-04-17

My friend discovered this disk in 2003, Although it was the Insieme A Te one. He lent it to me back then and after i had bought my own i dived straight into his voice, even after 2 years i'm still in love with Safina's incredible vocals. He seems to be able to hold a note for as long as an eternity. You cannot help but be drawn into his voice and he holds your attention like a good bar of chocolate. In fact you can sit down with a nice cup of hot chocolate in your hand pop the cd into your player and enjoy.. Its a wonderful chill out disk.

5 out of 5 stars The best out of Bocelli, Groban, and Frangoulis.......2005-03-10

I apologise for the length of this review, but I wanted to be as detailed as possible.

I love the operatic singing style voice, but I am not really an opera fan. I am however a HUGE fan of classical cross-over, or "popera" as it is becoming known. In fact, popera has fast become my favourite genre of music as of late. I like it because the singers sing beautifully, and the music has a more modern feel.

I own the albums of all the big popera acts including all of Andrea Bocelli albums from Romanza to Andrea, both of Josh Groban's studio albums, both of Mario Frangoulis' studio albums, and three Alessandro Safina albums. Because my car stereo plays mp3's, I took every song from these four artists and made one giant collection that spans 3 CD's worth of mp3's. I listen to them in the car, and all day at work. I can go days without hearing the same song. However, of all these artist, Alessandro is by far my favourite! I don't understand how it is cosmically possible that Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban have become as popular as they are, yet hardly anybody has heard of Alessandro Safina! let me tell you why I like his work best.

I find that in describing Alessandro, it is useful to compare him to his above mentioned contemporaries. In terms of sheer voice talent, In my opinion, Alessandro is the top of the list. Alessandro's voice is amazing! The only one of the above mentioned artists who can even come close would be Bocelli. Bocelli can take his voice to magnificent heights when he wants to, but for the most part he sings low and only really pushes the limit on occasion. Don't get me wrong, I think he has a beautiful voice, and I love his work, but Alessandro ALWAYS pushes the envelope and sings with such bravado, passion, power, and control, that you are left in awe. As I mentioned before, I'm not a big opera fan, but if I had to compare Alessandro's voice, I would liken it closest to Luciano Pavarotti then his popera contemporaries. Also, Safina sings entirely in Italian with a few exceptions (you'll see as you read on). But Safina's voice is only the beginning; what about his music?

I really like the music as well, it very modern, and upbeat. At times it can even take on a modern new-age quality such as Enigma (like his song Il Mirto & La Rosa for example), in terms of combining classical influence with modern pop elements. Listen to the samples of "Saro Con Te," "Siena," and "Luna" from his self titled album, also known as "Release 1" to see what I'm talking about, as they are good examples. One of my favourite songs ever, Il Mirto & La Rosa, is also on this album.

This entire album is one great song after another. His other studio album "Musica Di Te" is a bit of a departure from "Realease1" in the sense that it is a bit more soulful and modern. If I had to compare it to something out there you may have heard, I would go with George Michaels really good stuff or Seal, I'm not saying Alessandro sounds like George or Seal, but it has that musical feel that artists like George and Seal are very good at. However, Safina's vocal style is just as powerful and passionate as his first album. If you do like me, and listen to both his albums combined in to one album, "Release 1" and Musica Di te" actually weave together perfectly, so don't get nervous about some of the reviews that say that both albums are drastically different; they really are not. If you like one, you will like the other. "Musica De Ti" like his first album is good song after good song. The only song I don't really like is "You Come to My Senses," which is Safina's only English song on the album. His accent is very heavy, and it just doesn't work well. But 1 out of 14 isn't bad.

"Alessandro Safina: Realease 1" and "Musica Di Te" are Safina's two main albums. The other's you'll find such as "Safina" or "Insieme a Te" are nothing new and have the same songs you'll find on Realease 1 and Musica Di Te, except for maybe one new song. For instance, the album "Safina" has the bonus track "The Music of the Night" by Andrew Loyd Weber. But if his English in this song is anything like his English in "you come to my senses," I wouldn't get it for that one extra song. But I haven't heard it, so I really can't say. The album "Junto A Ti" is The exact same as "Release 1" except four of the songs are redone in Spanish, and the track "Arrivederci America" is missing. If you speak Spanish and not Italian, get Junto a Ti, if you don't speak Spanish, get Release 1.

I hope this has been helpful to some. Believe me, These albums are fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of my favourites.......2007-07-12

Yes Mr Safina has a lovely, powerful voice. Unfortunately someone has convinced him that his top notes are wonderful. I don't agree, his voice becomes strained. I prefer him singing more softly, but each song is sung in the same style. Each starts off very promisingly and then reaches these crescendos which don't sit well on my ears (and I don't have anything against crescendos). We all have different tastes and so far Mr Safina has been getting good ratings, except for one other; I'm just sorry I couldn't give him a higher score. I didn't even finish listening to the CD. Perhaps I will give it a another go later.
2007-07-16 I have listened again and I suggest that Mr Safina sticks to opera and ballads with better arrangements that suit his voice. His voice is too rich for the feeble arrangements and orchestration(?) on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing and Passionate.......2007-04-20

The first time I heard the song INSIEME A TE on a compilation CD, I was mesmerized - I had to find out who the singer was. I fell in love with that voice; dark, majestic, powerful and quite unlike the tenor voices I've heard before.

The very first time I listened to this CD in its entirety, I was totally blown away. The songs on this album are all superbly arranged and beautifully sung. I love the fact that they are all originals. Just listen to track no. 6 ('Stu Bbene) if you want to know just how passionate and expressive Mr Safina can sing.

I think he deserves so much more recognition than what he's getting now. On my part, I will keep buying his CDs. I'm eagerly awaiting his next album, Sognami, due out some time middle of this year.

1 out of 5 stars Same Old Thing.......2006-10-13

Alessandro Safina sings some new songs, but with a voice we have all heard before. One reviewer says that his voice is like Luciano Pavarotti. I say NO there are NO SIMILARITIES between Alessandro and Luciano. If you like Mario Frangoulis You will love Alessandro because they have the SAME VOICE JUST LIKE EVERY MALE "POPOERA SINGER" THIS CD IS NOT WORTH BUYING!!

5 out of 5 stars Truly an incredible artist.......2005-12-09

Alessandro Safina has incredible depth and his voice is indescribable. I think of him as dark and mysterious, as opposed to the more "pop" sound of some Josh Groban music or the lighter sound (compared to Safina) of Andrea Boccelli. Safina's music is very relaxing, but thought-provoking and never boring. His voice combines with the music on this CD in a way that makes me want to drift off into fantasy land.

5 out of 5 stars Best of out Bocelli, Groban, and Frangoulis.......2005-03-10

It doesn't get any better than this! This man has the most beauitful voice and the selections on this new CD perfectly match his extraordinary tenor voice. If you like "popopera", i.e., Bocelli, Il Divo, etc. and the Italian language you will fall in love with this. He also sings pieces in english, french and spanish and some you will clearly recognize. I'm just sorry he and his music has not been better introduced to the United States!

They just don't come any better than Alessandro Safina! He is the 24/7 background in my everyday musical life, and I own everything he has come out with. His selections of songs in every CD are absolutely beautiful, and I can't even speak Italian or any of the other languages he has mastered. But, I have to admit I prefer that to the english I speak and understand. Alessandro gives 110 percent, his all, to every song. They are packed with classic notes in his style and filled with the perfectly appropriate emotional touches. I am crazy about this wonderful voice, and I echo the sentiment that he just has to get into the homes of the American people. He will stand alone, he is not like Bocelli (whom I am very fond of), not like Josh Groban (another voice I revere in my vast musical collection), he is Alessandro Safina, the very finest to come along! Please take the privilege of discovering him, you won't be sorry.

    5 out of 5 stars That's what I call Music.......2006-01-01

I recently discovered Alessandro Safina and the likes (Josh Groban, Mario Frangoulis, not to mention Andrea Bocelli). And ever since I've been addicted to this "pop opera" music, that I've been searching the internet like crazy for similar works by other artists. Alessandro's Musica Di Te and Insieme A Te are two of the best albums I've heard in years. I can bearly wait for his next release. For those who like this kind of music I recommend the works of Emma Shapplin, and also a play called "Atylantos" by Jean-Patrick Capdevielle. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Look Out Pavarotti!.......2002-08-29

If there's a better tenor alive, I've not heard him. The experience of listening to Saffina must be what it was like for those who first heard Enrico Caruso. Powerful, passionate, and commanding: Alessandro Saffina sweeps the listener away.

5 out of 5 stars The most amazing (Italian) tenor I've ever heard.......2002-03-25

I'd seen "Alessandro Safina" in record stores several times, and finally picked up a copy out of curiosity. I'd never heard of Alessandro before, but now I realize what I've been missing out on! Safina (from Siena, Italy) has a fantastically powerful, sensual tenor voice that puts many contemporary classical crossover tenors (Andrea Bocelli, Russell Watson, Josh Groban) to shame.

Safina's voice is in a league of its own. The opening track "Music of the Night" features a Latin guitar, choir, and a percussion-enhanced finale that breathe new life into an old favourite. On "Music of the Night" Safina's voice becomes a gentle, crooning plea--I was nearly left in tears, for Safina clearly outshone all the performances of "Phantom" I'd ever seen in Toronto (five) *and* all of the cast recordings. If they ever make that "Phantom of the Opera" movie based on Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, they should cast Alessandro Safina instead of Antonio Banderas--he's beautiful (he's been dubbed "the singing George Clooney" for his resemblance to a certain American actor) and he has the voice of an angel!

His voice can be darkly sensual, rough velvet, evident on "Luna (Only You)," an amazing piece that opens with a sultry jazz (female) solo that dissolves into Safina's commanding tenor. It is the most electronic/dancelike of the fourteen songs on "Safina," with a pronounced drumbeat. Gorgeous background piano accompaniment and sweeping strings cradle Safina's voice without overpowering. A background choir chants near the end of the song, which blends Safina's and the female soloist's voice along with piano notes that trail off into silence.

"La Sete di Vivere" is a slower, gentler song, again accompanied by piano, strings and synth. "Aria e memoria" begins with a melancholy wavelike rhythm, building into a gently affirmative chorus. "Siena" is an ode to his hometown, sung in the softest of seductive whispers that becomes a full-voiced declaration. "Il Mirto E la Rosa" opens with a sultry flamenco guitar solo that shimmers in the moonlight, until the piano softly creeps in and the sonic tension builds with the addition of a synth backbeat, until the chorus erupts into a passionate whirl of sounds and colour.

"'Stu Bbene" is tinged with flamenco flavour and awash in gentle strings and piano. Safina sings as if his voice is a fragile glass bauble here, so delicately until he reaches the chorus that we are once again surprised and thrilled when he unleashes the full power of his tenor voice. That is his general attack mode with most of the songs here, and it works. Soft, crooned intros melt into full voice, sometimes taking us by (breathless) surprise.

The two instrumental "Ehyeh" and "Diva Mea" are very interesting additions. "Ehyeh" is actually the background instrumentals to "Il Mirto E La Rosa" and "Diva Mea" is the backing track to "Luna" complete with female vocalist and choir. Very uplifting tracks that sound like film music and are beautiful even without the vocals, "Ehyeh" in particular as the flamenco guitar really shines as a solo. Finally "Aria e Memoria--We'll Be Together" is a duet with Chrissie Hynde. It is the same song as "Aria E Memoria" from earlier in the album, this time as an English-Italian duet with Chrissie's voice in the foreground. Very powerful and effective.

Alessandro has also released a Spanish version of this album, "Junto a ti" and performed backing vocals on a song from the "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack, "Your Song" with Ewan McGregor. Try to catch his PBS Great Performances special that was filmed on location in Italy, "Alessandro Safina in Concert: Only You." As far as I know it is not available on video or DVD. My only wish is that I'd picked up this CD sooner--I had no idea what I was missing out on! Move over Bocelli, this is the *real* operatic/pop tenor of Italy!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album.......2002-03-19

There are other singers who sang beautifully before Alessandro Safina but no one ever had sung so powerful and wonderfully like
Mr. Safina did in this album and all of his songs are just breathtaking. I always thought he is the best ever since I heard his voice for the first time and his interpretation of "Music of the Night" in this album convinced me more so.
So, please go out to get this album whether you love classics, pops, or rock n roll. This is a treasure that you'd keep for a very long time!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best of out Bocelli, Groban, and Frangoulis.......2005-03-10

I apologise for the length of this review, but I wanted to be as detailed as possible. This review is for Safina's albums in general. But see the bottom for an album by album description; including this one.

I own the albums of all the big popera acts including all of Andrea Bocelli's albums from Romanza to Andrea, both of Josh Groban's studio albums, both of Mario Frangoulis' studio albums, and three Alessandro Safina albums.

5 out of 5 stars Alessandro Safina Spectacular !!!.......2002-08-26

Overwhelming singing voice! I put him in the top rank. The choice of music is also superb; and he also sings Spanish. Too awesome. A must buy !!!
