Album Details

Carlos Santana's February, 1979 release is technically his fourth solo effort. An instrumental album comprised of roughly half studio-recorded tracks & half live cuts (recorded in Osaka, Japan), this item is home to many great tracks & speaks largely of the artist's spiritual awakening. Includes 'Silver Dreams, Golden Smiles', 'Life is Just a Passing Parade', 'Free as the Morning Sun', 'I Am Free' & eleven more.

A Hidden Treasure.......2007-03-21

I had come across this album on lp in the Bargin Bin back around 1981 and, taking a chance, found it to be a pleasant surprise. I had not known of its release a few years earlier and found the music to be a bit different from earlier Santana releases. But it was a music which would grow upon a listener with each spin on the turn table. Although credited to Devaip Carlos Santana, it features many of his regular band musicians at the time. The cuts don't seem to have as much percussion as earlier Santana albums, but Carlos Santana's guitar, Tom Coster's keyboards and Greg Walker's vocals provide audio verification that it is a Santana endeavor. As mentioned by other reviewers, it is an excursion into jazz, but it is pure Santana nonetheless and it doesn't disappoint. Even Sri Chinmoy's short spoken poems are a good fit into the overall experience and appear to aid in the flow of the music without causing disruption.

I don't think you'll find any of the songs from Oneness on any of the Santana compilation albums and, this fact, coupled with lasting memories of this album finally convinced me to seek out the cd and acquire a new copy.

A perfect fit among his best recordings.......2007-02-26

Released in 1979, Onesess is Carlos Santana's first solo album.
Although CS was not sure which musical style to follow; Fusion Jazz which he really loved, heavily inspired by John McLaughlin; His great basic Latin Rock sound; or the new Pop Rock trend. Onesess came up as a combination of all three styles reflecting the puzzled period; this artist was living in; yet a great album, perfectly picturing what a great musician and guitarist Carlos Santana was.
This album fits perfectly among his best recordings, making it highly recommended to any old Santana fan, or to any Fusion Latin Rock music lover.

Oneness - Santana at his best.......2006-08-26

Released in Australia on vinyl, but never on CD, this has to be one of the best Santana Albums ever. I think that this album was a special project for Calos and he put his heart and soul into the performance. A collection of eclectic tracks culminating in the Oneness track itsself. The way the guitar work ebs and flows is a special delight, especially when listening through high quality headphones. A must for any Santana fan!

ONENESS: One of Two.......2006-08-01

Thought it might be fun to mention: this CD contains one of the two (in my opinion) greatest vocal-free guitar solos by Carlos Santana. It is the title track, #10: ONENESS. This, along with EUROPA from the first "Moonflower" CD...are the two greatest vocal-free Santana guitar solos, in my opinion. Moonflower CD #2, by the way, has (in my opinion) the best performance of SOUL SACRIFICE as well. Overall, my favorite "live" Santana collection is (selected tracks from) LOTUS; and coming in an extremely close second is the live CD from the legacy edition of Santana III: the final Filmore West concert.

Amazing.......2006-11-08

This is easily the best of the 3 Dreams CD's, with the vol. 4 that is just coming out around now tying it for first... I am not a great CDM fan, even though I enjoy trheir music in general, but this cd just blew me off since the moment I heard Bliss, Rue de Soleil, Buffal Sanchez... Long story short, I listen to this CD at least once a week, usually much more often than that.

Love it, love it, love it! Classic flamenco guitar riffs and zippy plucking. Most tracks are light-hearted but the rest are robust and throaty fresh from the classic six string acoustic guitar.

This CD is very mellow. Only a couple of the selections catch your attention. The rest of them fade together from one song to the next. The beat is the same on practically every selection. If you are looking for music to put you to sleep, this will do it!!!!!

I've never heard a style of music quite like this cd before, and I love it. Flamenco rythyms and arpeggios seem to be mixed in with a blend of easy listening and jazz all under the classical technique. The result is a truly beautiful and unique flamenco cd. This cd proves that true flamenco doesn't have to be fast and furious in order to keep the intensity and passion expected out of a flamenco album. Well done.

Very relaxing mid to upbeat spanish guitar with no singing.......1999-04-21

I like the gypsy kings and Ana Caram, but didn't like the singing in spanish (which I don't understand) but Benedetti/Svoboda's "Flamenco Dreams" is JUST what I've been looking for... Beautifully recorded, relaxing melodies, but not boring....and NO SINGING!!!!

Although it is not the best work of Ruben Blades, many of the subjects in the album, deserve to be listened to, with the heart opened to the emotion and specially to the melancholy. The subject "Todos vuelven", deserves special attention. You will enjoy Ruben Blades, with an important orquestación and musical adjustments that they imitate "to the district" music and feeling.

half of a great album.......2003-03-07

Agreed, The Jobim masterpieces are the highlight of this album and it's worth buying for the first four cuts. Considering the many times that Corcovado and Desafinado have been covered, you'd think that there was no room left for new ideas, but these two versions are truly delightful. The NYV are great as usual and Claudio Roditi makes a typically great contribution, too. After those first four tunes, though, the energy escapes and downtempo disease sets in, together with some half-baked charts. I'd like to hear the rest of the concerts, because I'm sure these great performers offered better material than, say, cut 6, which sounds like a bad version of Baroque Samba. Snow Samba redeems things, though, and all ends well.

Don't Miss This Great Album.......2002-12-25

What a superb collaboration with New York Voices and Claudio Roditi. Good melodies and harmonies. Listen every track especially "Jobim masterpiece" songs and you will not regret to buy this cd.

The third member of jazz's Three Young Tenors.......1999-03-02

It's a shame that you hear so much in the mainstream about Carter and Redman and not Sanchez. although Joshua and James are very deserving of the press so is David, yet he gets the short end of the stick. His technical dexterity is obvious throughout the album. But that is not what attracts me to Sanchez's music. His improvisations are simply red-hot, full blaze. They're full of Latin flavor, but true to post-bop articulation and phrasing. His sound is so big and, at times, somewhat on the raw side. Throughout the album, he and Perez work very well together. My personal favorite on this album is "The Extension" and the sixth track (I can't remember it by name right now). In any case, as a jazz lover and sax player myself, I know what I like to listen to and transcribe...This is one of the CDs I'll be studying and playing along with for quite a while.

Brazilian vocalist Flora Purim brought a unique approach to her art that profoundly altered the nature of vocalization. She expands the basic techniques of vocalise--where every syllable is phrased like a note played on a reed or brass instrument--to include world music. On the title track her voice shifts, like a chameleon, from an exotic bird camouflaged by the jungle of husband Airto Moreira's percussion effects to a soothing delivery more reminiscent of Astrud Gilberto. By the time she sings "Dindi" in Portugese, her style so encompasses the content that the shift of language sounds perfectly natural. On "Dr. Jive" she dives into a dense fusion of Latin jazz powered by Stanley Clarke's inspired bass and some of the best keyboarding in George Duke's career. This is a very great set, and great performances.
This album is one of the finest brasil-psycho-jazz-fusion albums ever made.

The switch from Dr.Jive to Light as a feather is amazing, the performance of the band with light as a feather (a real Jazz classic) is superb, never heard this song so good as on this album. A wannahave!

"still trying to figure out if there's a CD that includes her rendition of "You're Everything" - yes!! - it's on Return to Forever's Light As A Feather, a fantastic latin jazz album with beautiful Fender Rhodes electric piano playing from Chick Corea among other luminaries, and, as on this Flora's in fine voice on a few tracks - buy it if you like this, or latin-influenced jazz!!

Two summers ago I was looking for a new CD to buy. Although I was intrigued by "new/neo" soul, I wasn't in the mood for hip-hop based music. I did want to hear something soulful, but whose fundamental component was jazz... and I wanted something that drew on a wider base than the American tradition. The music on "Butterfly Dreams" was exactly the type of music I was looking for. I guess I was really in a retro/nostalgic mood - my description of the music (though uninformed) is that it's similar to some of Stevie Wonder's 70's music, only authentically (as opposed to ostensibly) rooted in jazz. It has all of the elements of an enjoyable jazz or popular album - the solos are fun, and the melodies range from joyful to melancholic. The musicians are all jazz legends in their own right, and Flora herself is a refreshingly unique and inspirational vocalist. Much of what I said above applies to "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly" as well (though it's much more energetic and varied), but I prefer "Butterfly Dreams" - the mood is more consistent (mellow - even the more up-tempo songs are light and "dreamy") and the songs are more haunting.

... earth muffinish philosophies translated into boring music were some of the least harmful. this is a good example. maybe 1.5 tunes on this album are worth listening to more than once. in fairness, the same could be said for many artists and albums of this genre.

After wearing out the grooves in the original LP, it's wonderful to have this CD. Flora's music took me through college and I introduced her to many others. It's lovely to hear Butterfly Dreams, Dindi, Moon Dreams, and Light As A Feather again. I'm still trying to figure out if there's a CD that includes her rendition of "You're Everything". That was special. If anyone can clue me in, please do.

I was amazed none of the Santana-followers took the effort to review this album. Released in 1979, it must be his last of the seventies. And, surely compared to the music he made in the following decade, it's a good one.
Santana is still under the influence of Sri Chinmoy, who introduces the first track by way of meditating. Well, rest assured: it could have been worse. This moody opening gradually takes on a jazzier or funkier rhythm, with songs that sound fresh and sparkling (Jim Jeannie, Transformation Day, Cry Of The Wilderness, Free As The Morning Sun), haunting (Oneness) and even downright kitsch (Silver Dreams). The guitarplaying may be trademark Santana, but it never becomes the routinejob Carlos displays on many albums following this one. Better still: the master is - with the exception of the boring accoustic track Golden Dawn - in top shape!
