Customer Reviews:
The idiosyncratic gaze! .......2006-08-17
As a matter of fact, Alfred Cortot, Dinu Lipatti, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli brought not only a refreshing vision but still better, new perspectives of interpretation, leaving behind the romanticism and approaching him under the idiosyncratic emblem of a bygone era. That's what the previous reviewers have denominated eccentric rather than interpretative renovation, where the dimension of every piece is considered in its own individuality and specific weight, where the concept of miniaturist composer has been substituted by the thinker poet, earning an organic quality and major dramatic scope.
I cannot think about another pianist who may phrase Chopin as Francois did it. So, please do me a favor and firmly decide to acquire it. You will surprise yourself!
Fascinating Chopin.......2006-02-17
The One and Only One Chopinist?.......2005-01-25
Philips, advised by Alfred Brendel among others, presented Samson Francois as one of the greatest pianists of the century. In Philips' list, we do have some extraordinary Chopinists. Fridedman's Mazurkas are said to be unsurpassble, so are Cortot's Preludes & Etudes (or all his Chopin), or Lipatti's Waltzes. Or else, Hofmann's or Rachmaninov's Chopin are just marvelous. But those are historic recordings. While some prefer Moravec or even Arrau's Nocturnes, Rubinstein's Nocturnes, and particularly his Polonaises, like Agerich's Preludes are a sensation. Cziffra's Chopin is superb, so is Freire in general. But we can't leave out Samson as a leading Chopin interpreter.
Samson was perhaps the greatest of Cortot's pupils. From his Chopin Ballades, there are all-embracing colours (by the subtlety of using the pedal among other things) creating rainbow after rainbow. The harmonic suspensions as the nub of the Ballades adds so much to the potency of music. His Nocturnes, darkening the colours in the background creating the right atmostphere together with the poignancy of his narrative power, compare favourably with Arrau's. His Preludes may not be a fiery as Agerich's, but they are more bitter, so bitter that he is a type of his own...
The Nocturnes are recorded in '66. And in any event the earliest recording in the boxset was made in '54 and the re-mastering is so good that unless you make an effort, you won't be able to tell them from modern recordings and yet they are sold at bargain price. Grap it while it is still available.
Excellent, Eccentric Chopin.......2004-01-18

A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Great Source for Piano Specialists.......2006-08-16
Most of these pieces are arrangements of selected Schubert songs where the music for the voice and the piano accompaniment are combined into a solo piano piece. One problem with these pieces for the average (like me) amateur listener is that very few of the pieces are from Schubert's major or most familiar Lieder. In many ways, it feels we are simply listening to etudes, but without the delicacy of Chopin's piano studies.
Oddly, aside from the interest to the piano professional, I think there is a great use for this music as background music for serious gatherings where you want the music to be interesting, but not too intrusive.

APR's series documenting the career of Simon Barere (1896-1951), one of the century's great pianists, is an indispensable boon for piano buffs. This disc captures him in full flight at a 1947 Carnegie Hall concert. The poster advertising the concert, reproduced in the booklet, splashes the quote "Electrifying" under his photo, and that describes the playing here--full of energy, poetry, and virtuosic technique beyond that of most other pianists. The piled-on sonorities of Liszt's Funérailles are thrilling. Liszt's "La leggierezza" and the Hungarian Rhapsody score through Barere's phenomenal finger control and colorings at breakneck tempos, and his lyric gifts make the Chopin Nocturne moving. An encore, Rachmaninov's famous G minor prelude, is played with such panache you want to hit the repeat button. The sound isn't within hailing distance of hi-fi, but the music shines through with bright force. This is a must-have, as is Volume One, on which Barere is as magical in 1946 Carnegie concerts. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
A legendary pianist!.......2005-08-05
I had mine but I had to modify it. I knew about the most effusive comments of this keyboard's titan but yesterday evening when I listened that record, I must confess all the epithets were insufficient.
Glazunov flattered him with this metaphor. Liszt in one hand and Anton Rubinstein in the other.
Let's start with the Fantasy Op. 49 of Chopin. Barere's approach is absolutely offbeat; he confers Chopin a majuscule dimension. He handles both sections of this work with absolutely domain of the score. This piece is mostly played with high romantic effluviums, but with the only exception of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in a Torino Recital 1962 I had not listened any other recording capable to match with that.
Chopin's Nocturne is simply spelling. I had to search the other versions I own and the difference favored by far to Barere, musicality, sense of the span, lyricism and the slender floating previous note with the next maintains a rhythmical cohesion and expressive eloquence as I had never listened before.
His Liszt is overwhelming; the highlights are The Funerals, played with fervent energy ; tremolos, arpeggios and sforzandos are of first order. The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12 is played with twinkling pianism ; the only pianists that can match with him are Erwin Nyiregihazi and Louis Kentner.
These pieces were recorded from a live Recital in Carnegie Hall on March 9th 1947.

Customer Reviews:
magnificent playing, uneven sound reproduction.......2002-03-19
Perhaps Petri was not aware that there would be a whole generation of listeners waiting for the release of anything available enlightening them to the master's art.
With this CD, after numerous listenings and strict critical reaction, I would be willing to place the Brahms Variations on a buffet against any other interpretation. There is no other equal in recorded history. He didn't care for his Mazeppa, and I know why. It doesn't share the same immaculate plateau as the other selections offered, but there is no obvious trouble focusing on the meteoric rhythmic drive. And when he forgives himself and relaxes into the music, it is breathless.
I am limited by space here, but, this is a recording both important historically and necessary for the sheer joy it will bring the listener.
