For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation of Williams' Best Scores.......2007-07-26

This two disc CD does an excellent job of covering thirty years of Academy Award winner John Williams' greatest hits. It contains main title themes from films such as Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, Indiana Jones, Home Alone, and of course the best theme of them all (in my opinion), Superman. It also contains two principal themes from the summer Olympics that NBC has used in its broadcasts since 1996 when John Williams composed the album "Summon the Heroes."

The sound quality is excellent and I've been extremely pleased with the product.

Bottom Line: Great CD with unforgettable hits. Buy it today if you're interested in it.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven is an insect compaired to this titian of composition........2007-07-18

In the past when I went to movies, I rarely thought about the music unless it was a popular song that was being played. I never realized how much the score had to do with the overall effect I felt while watching the show.

Once I started paying attention to the music and identifying different pieces that I enjoyed from different movies, I was suprized to realize that John Williams had composed many, many of them.

This CD contains possibably the greatest most timeless music I have heard. Sure, you, like my classical music loving boss, have probably already written off my opinion as foolish or ignorant. Honestly, I don't care.

I like Mozart, Bach and the rest, and they have their place, but their music doesn't move through me like Williams. While this collection is far from a box set of his work, all the most popular pieces are there: Raders March (Indiana Jones), Star Wars, Superman, Empire March (Darth Vader). None of the operas or preludes the other guys made up generate the experience I get from listening to the opening stanza of Superman.

While it is very hard to sing along to these pieces, if you have an office as I do, it makes great background music. Everyone who comes in is pleasently caught off guard and I enjoy watching them trying to place the various songs that are playing.

Even if you disagree that Williams is better than Wagner or Debussy, if you enjoy his music, you will love this CD. "These are the droids you are looking for."

4 out of 5 stars An excellent survey of this great film composer's music.......2007-06-15

John Willams' film music is of such high quality it still holds up away from its source material.

Williams not only has the talent to write memorable melodies but to expertly interpolate themes from the story into his scores, for example the drum rolls in "JFK" evoking the president's funeral procession and the mournful bugle calls in "Born on the Fourth of July".

Williams also employs a variety of styles, but never gratuitously, always to the service of the film. His "Jaws" theme is as legendary as the violin shrieks from Bernard Herrman's famous score for "Psycho".

The performances are excellent - only the "Born on the Fourth of July" performance exposes some thinness in the string section of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

There is much to enjoy here for film and music lovers alike.

3 out of 5 stars Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic.......2006-02-20

A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars On connaît tous sa musique, beaucoup moins son nom..........2005-09-20

5 out of 5 stars Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars This CD brings a smile to my face driving to work.......2007-05-30

TV themes these days aren't written with the same charm or character that they use to be, so I love this CD. Actually I have all 7 of the TV's Greatest Hit's CD's, and have them all loaded up in my car's CD changer. They sure put a smile on my face as I wade thru the frustrating traffic to and from work. If you're somewhere between 45 and 60yrs old, you should love the entire collection. (I'm 53)

4 out of 5 stars I love listening to TV........2005-12-05

First of all, these are ALL obviously the originals, I don't know how anyone could think they weren't. Secondly, if you're a TV addict, a child of the 80's, or just a pop-culture junkie, this is a must. It's 73 minutes of 65 TV theme songs, all for your nostalgic pleasure. Classics like "Three's Company", "Taxi", "Miami Vice", "Fat Albert", "Happy Days", "The Love Boat", and numerous others. There are a few shows sadly missing, but chances are they're on the other discs in the "TV" series, most of which are also this good. This also makes for a good game of "name that tune" with family or friends, or put in on during a party and listen to the conversation pick up. Overall, listening to TV is the best thing since watching it. Good luck finding it though.

5 out of 5 stars Original Versions.......2004-08-23

Sixty five original versions of television theme songs. It is so good to find original versions of these songs as most of these type of albums you buy contain versions sung by some unknown non original artist or played by an orchestra without the lyrics and this fact is never mentioned on the outside of the CD cover with the purchaser only finding out they have been ripped off when they get home. Rest assured this sensational album contains nothing but original versions as you heard when you watched the show on TV.

Of course some shows updated their theme songs over the years so some songs on here may be slightly different to what you remember if you tuned in a couple of seasons in.
The Muppet Show and The Smurfs are two which later versions of exist but it is good to hear and own the initial series versions anyway. There is an official Muppet Show soundtrack with the later version on it if you really want it. I am yet to come across the later Smurf one however.

With 65 TV shows covered you really can't go wrong with this collection. Sure there are some great 70's & 80's songs from shows not included, but other shows would have had to be left off for them to be put on here and everyone has different taste. I don't know how old this CD is, I found it in a second hand music store but hopefully if there isn't already a sequel the makers will bring one out with shows like Astro Boy, Married With Children, Chips, Dukes of Hazard, Secret Valley, Round the Twist, Fraggle Rock and other classics. Also a 90's version with shows like Seinfeld, Friends, Malcolm in the Middle, Law and Order, X-Files and so on would be great.

I love listening to theme songs, I don't really know why, but the fact remains that this would be the greatest collection of theme songs on the one CD that I have ever come across. Usually you have to buy whole soundtrack albums to get just one song and the other songs on the album are nothing but fillers. This CD is a must have for any collector of theme songs, just buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Going Back In Time In A Great Way.......2004-01-10

A friend had this CD while we went on a long driving trip. Listening to this over the many miles was a great brain teaser, and stumped us for many of them. We could see the opening credits and scenes we remembered, but had so much fun trying to remembering these. We laughed like crazy when we figured them out, laughing with a long trip down memory lane. We will certainly buy the other versions for other trips. Great to share with people who can also relate to these shows.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2005-06-21

If you want the original recordings, don't purchase any volume of Television's Greatest Hits. I've had better luck recording the songs off of my TV with a cassette tape recorder and then dehissing them on my PC. These collections have sterile sounding fake stereo recordings of "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "The Munsters" that just don't sound right to me. If the original recordings don't matter to you, then you may like this CD.

1 out of 5 stars Record the Originals or Don't Bother!.......2005-01-09

Most of these are re-renditions of the originals. Most people shopping for a CD like this would know right away upon hearing the samples that this CD is not what they're looking for.

Who has produced CDs with ALL ORIGINAL recordings? This CD deserves zero stars.

4 out of 5 stars Television's Greatest Hits,Volume 1:From 50's And '60's(TVT).......2005-01-04

Have always dug this collection of them old TV shows from when I was a kid and a even a few before I was born.A total of 65 TV themes, with a duration of 72:17,was originally available as a double lp.Ones that gave me some of those 'special' childhood memories were "The Little Rascals(Good Old Days)","The Flintstones",the "Bugs Bunny Overture","The Munsters"(remember the Herman Munster laugh?),the always corny "Leave It To Beaver" and "Dragnet(Theme And March)" as I remember my dorky history teacher from way back when that recorded this tune off the TV set and repeatedly played during the eighth hour period after school.Believe me,we watched our behavior after an hour of hearing this tune something like forty times in an hour's time.A nice disc to have around as a novelty.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the bunch.......2004-10-03

This is the first of the TV themes CDs and it's the best. Even the old shows I'd never heard of like "Fireball X-L5" have awsome themes. There are a few songs that I'm pretty sure aren't the original recordings (like secret agent man) but are actually a little better, with is unusual.

5 out of 5 stars What time is it?.......2004-06-30

Ah, memories! I remember buying this on vinyl when it first came out in 1985. There are a few tracks on the 2 LP version that were left off of the CD version because of time constraints. The LP version was hosted by Don Pardo. The first track on side one was "Peter Gynt-Morning Suite", where Don Pardo signs on and begins the broadcast day. Side one ends with Don Pardo announcing a "Test of the Emergency Broadcast System" and then playing "Duck and Cover", a Civil Defense Department public service announcement telling kids how to survive a nuclear bomb attack. Side two ends with Don Pardo announcing "We are experiencing technical difficulties, please stand by". Side three ends with the "News Medley", which features Don Pardo introducing a "medley" of TV news reporters saying a line or two. Side four ends with Don Pardo announcing the end of the broadcast day and then playing "Our National Anthem". Everything else on the album version (65 TV themes from the '50s and '60s) is the same as on the CD version. How much you enjoy this CD depends on how much nostalgia you feel for old TV shows. Personally, I love this stuff. It must be pointed out that some of these themes have been rerecorded for this album. It's hard to say how many are rerecordings, but to my ears, over half of them seem to be rerecordings. But I honestly don't mind that. They went to such lengths to make the songs sound as much like the originals as possible, that most people probably won't be able to tell the difference. This is a great trip back to the Golden Age of TV theme songs that is a blast for nostalgia buffs like me.

4 out of 5 stars Hand me the remote control........2006-01-29

This is a collection of 65 TV themes from the '70s and '80s. They all seem to be the original versions of the themes, unlike some of the earlier volumes in the series, which had some rerecordings. These are the TV shows I grew up with, so there is a lot of nostalgia here for me. I like the sitcom themes the best, because that is mostly what I watched when I was a kid. A lot of them are really cheesy, but I love 'em. If you watched too much TV during the '70s and '80s, you will probably get a kick out of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars From TV LAnd to AOL getting soon re runs of series...This is a MUST!.......2005-12-26

Well, it seems that from TV LAnd to Nick at Night even AOL which is on the way to create a service that will allows his users to view series from th 60's to now, people WANT good series with fun again.

No gratuitous violence like too many shows now (which, that is good, are going back in numbers since last year 2004).

Those misics like the shows are classics because they were good fun AND with adventures not cheap series made with unecessary violence or sex.
So...it seems that it is coming back! So, why not get the album too?

5 out of 5 stars great service.......2005-07-07

very fast service, item arrived in good condition. would buy from again

4 out of 5 stars Most are originals (for a change for this series).......2005-01-09

This is the first of this series that offers mostly (not all) original renditions of the TV theme songs.

Maybe it's because many of these were by stars or singers who are known by the public, but whatever the reason this edition is a big improvement.

I would NOT recommend ANY of the earlier volumes in this series if you're seriously looking for original recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Good Original TV versions!.......2002-04-24

I was relieved when I found this CD had all original TV versions, compared to the usual unfamiliar orchestra versions you usually get on a compilation - that really frustrates me. Especially when I came to "The Dukes of Hazzard" - the version Waylon Jennings released on record just didn't have the same drive or edge to it as the one played on TV. That has always been disapointing for me until I saw here the original on CD.
Themes like "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Alf" and "The Golden Girls" are really refreshing and a reminder of the old familiar innocence and laid back atmosphere of TV family comedy, while "Airwolf", "Doctor Who" and "People's Court" and "Monday Night Football" give a lively and yet serious feel.
However, I think there might be an error in the CD liner notes; they describe the theme to "James at 15" as vintage 70s pop/rock, and say the song itself is called "It's all up to you."
I never saw this show, and the words "It's all up to you" do not appear in the song. I would like to know if anyone can enlighten me as to whether or not this was a mistake, as with the exception of this theme being vaguely reminiscent of Elton John's piano and harmonica style of pop/rock, I find this hard to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, they are all originals.......2005-09-19

I have had this since it came out, they are the original themes. The only 'surprises' are for shows that had different versions of the themes, usually then they choose the less familiar version (unfortunately). Still, completely awesome.

5 out of 5 stars There's no need to fear!.......2005-09-11

This is a collection of "65 more TV themes from the 50s and 60s". Most of the themes are re-recordings of the original themes, but most people will be hard pressed to distinguish the re-recordings from the original versions. The re-recordings sound almost exactly like the original versions, except with better sound fidelity. The easiest way to tell which tracks are re-recordings is that the new recordings are in stereo, and it is highly doubtful that original television themes from the 50s or 60s would be in stereo. But regardless of that, this CD is a fun listen for fans of old TV shows.

2 out of 5 stars TV themes galore.......2005-06-28

If you're looking for some of the best TV themes created-of some of the best shows ever-volume two is probably the NUMBER ONE volume to get. Veering away from the shows of the 70s is not a bad move(have you heard the jazz fusion tracks of "Emergency!", "Medical Center", & "Police Woman"? Yeesh!) This one is still a mixed bag(I mean, let's face it, there are only so many listenable themes), but this one is unique in that it has a number of those themes that were sung(mainly westerns, like Bat Masterson, Maverick, and Rawhide, with better lyrics and melodies than, say, The Flintstones or Gilligan's Island's ballads), some of the best jazz-oriented lounge pieces, which are easily amongst the best and most listenable TV themes of all time(The Avengers, The Saint, Route 66, Green Hornet, Peter Gunn, The Pink Panther, Bewitched, The Honeymooners, Jonny Quest), and a number of the most complimentary TV themes, pointed toward the show's own premise, sometimes with sound effects to boot(Daktari, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea-you really feel as if you're coasting the lower fathoms, Rat Patrol, Twelve O'Clock High-emitting the wild blue yonder, Hogan's Heroes-scored to a german march). As far as the reviews stating that a good number of these are remakes, if you pay attention to the awkwardness of sound quality from piece to piece, it's quite evident that most of these have that non-restored sound(and why would recreations not be better dubbed?), cancelling out those reviews. Also, for those who believe that "Bewitched" and others have been modified somewhat, this is not the reason behind the additional notes. Some of these are actually the original scores, before they were cut to their shorter versions. With this in mind, it's quite evident that "The Avengers" and "Bewitched" themes are best in their original format, as a full scoring, and not the trunkated versions used for the show. However, I can see where I would have maybe thought the same thing if I hadn't known this information.

5 out of 5 stars I count maybe 7 or 8 recreations out of 65 themes.......2005-01-30

Some of these reviews are WACKY that say most or all the tracks here are recreations. I just went through them all in this volume, and my guess is about 8 are recreations, maybe less. Some are obvious (Bewitched), others are not so obvious. I have a sick gift a being able to remember the tempo and aound of these original themes, and you'll fine that 90% of these are "The Real McCoys" (Volume 4). I don't think these reviewers appreciate that Steve Gottlieb was able to get access to studio recordings of the original themes in some cases, so in some cases the fidelity is remarkable. Good fidelity in sound does not mean a remake...

I have all the TV tunes volumes and some are dissappointing remakes (Bonanza, The Virginian, 77 Sunset Strip) but far and away the vast majority are originals and you won't find them anywhere else but on these remarkable collections. They are hysterical to listen to these songs... It's like taking a time machine (wayback machine?) back to the times these shows were on.

Buy it, you'll like it...

4 out of 5 stars They're always out on the hunt........2006-04-16

This CD features 65 TV theme songs from the '80s and '90s. All the themes are the original versions as heard on television. If you watched a lot of TV during that era, you will be familiar with many of the tracks here. Some of the themes are pretty cheesy, especially for the "family" sit-coms, but that's part of their charm. TV addicts should get this CD.

1 out of 5 stars SUCKED.......2005-09-07

I was really disappointed in the purchase of my CD, the seller said the CD was still in the wrapper, which we all know they have shrink wrap machines....the CD skipped throughout the entire CD. I would never purchase anything else on Amazon again.

5 out of 5 stars Pete and Pete Rules.......2005-05-07

At last I've found the theme song for The Adventures of Pete and Pete!!!! Great song which I have searched high and low for in years past and never found. That's enough to make me buy this CD, but the Simpsons and Ren & Stimpy are great too. Other standouts are Seinfeld, Law & Order, Cosby Show, Different World, Blossom, Thirtysomething, and My So Called Life. A few others are totally lame like the theme for "My Two Dads", but then so was the show.

1 out of 5 stars the dqays and nights of molly dodd.......2003-07-25

i haven't heard a sound of this theme song whats up your web site is for the birds.

4 out of 5 stars "I am a TV Head, I watch it day and night".......2003-07-18

I was kind of hesitant to spend 20 bucks on this CD, but I grew up on a lot of TV and the memories these songs bring back are priceless. The performances are all originals, no cheesy imitations. My faves are the Nickelodeon tunes - 'Clarissa', 'Pete & Pete', 'Ren & Stimpy' - and I would have given the CD 5 stars if they had included at least one version of the 'Roundhouse' theme (the title of my review is an homage to 'Roundhouse'). Another missing theme is from 'Martin' - I mean, they have 'Roc' and 'Fresh Prince', but no 'Martin'? Or En Vogue's "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper"? Come on!

The strings in the 'Sisters' theme still give me chills, "The Nanny Named Fran" always makes me smile and Doc Severinsen's "Georgia on My Mind" (from 'Designing Women') is excellent. When I listen to 'Twin Peaks' though all I can think of is the sketch on 'Saturday Night Live' with Mike Myers talking backwards and Victoria Jackson eating ribbon and spitting out a bow.

All in all, this CD will make you smile when you hear the songs because they will make you think of the shows and what was happening in your life when they were airing.

4 out of 5 stars An alright effort.......2006-08-09

I wouldn't consider this to be Christy Romano's debut album as a recording artist 'cause these songs were just put together from her work on soundtracks, except for "Dive In." However, this is still a nice little CD to listen to. The songs are catchy, and she seems to have fun on a lot of them. Her version of "Teacher's Pet" is addictive and you can't help but smile when you hear the beginning of "Say the Word." Christy Romano is a Disney favorite and is probably the most appealing because of her character on Even Stevens, and she also sings better than other Disney divas such as Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and Ashley Tisdale. She has that special personality that just has you hooked. Her credit in Broadway's Parade and Beauty and the Beast doesn't hurt her appeal either. Even though this album is short, I think only 25 minutes, it's has a nice variety. The only song I don't really like is her version of "Colors Of The Wind." Besides that, she sounds great!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible!.......2006-06-21

This album is horrible. Christy's voice is annoying and most of the songs she sings are very childish. The only song that is sorta good is Colors Of The Wind. This album is good for the pre-teen crowd but I would not recommend it for older teens. If you want to hear REAL TALENT and a good album check out "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson.

NOT RECOMMENDED

3 out of 5 stars Only if you like Disney Pop.......2006-06-12

Christy is a good singer and a very nice person, too - but this album isnt for everyone. It's only for those who like "kiddy music". The lyrics and tunes are for kids and dont reccommend this for anyone over the age of 14.

Christy should really come out with a REAL album which isnt a compilation of Disney soundtrack songs. That would be interesting!

The best songs on this album are 'Dive In' 'Say The Word' and 'Lets Bounce'.

3 out of 5 stars shes pretty good but at the same time not good enough!!!!!.......2006-06-02

im telling you i love christy carlson romano and i think this album is really good but at the same time its not that great. i think christy has a really great voise but her voise was cut out more for opera than it was for pop. I mean she played belle for the beauty and the beast the opera version. she was really good. and then you listen to her trying to sing pop and its ok but her voise just wasent really meant for it.But aother than that the album is really good with really good songs. Now if your not into the whole disney preppy girl songs like her song dive in than you most likely wont like this cd but if your sorta into that kinda of music you will totally love this cd. so i hope my review has helped you made a dession on rather you want to buy this cd or not. david lance.

2 out of 5 stars Nice Tribute But Not a Great Tribute.......2006-01-15

This would've been an amazing concert but as a record/CD - not so much.

Kool & the Gang had some great hits and they still stand the test of time - one test of a great song (and great performance) is that they sound fresh and could've been released yesterday. Kool & the Gang's songs and performances from the 1970's and 1980's still sound fresh and vibrant today - one reason you can't go more than 40 minutes without hearing a song of theirs on a soft rock station.

So this tribute album is a bit odd. Instead of having other big stars performing Kool & the Gang songs - perhaps they thought that might've been too radical and jarring to what our ears are used to? They asked these artists to perform with Kool & the Gang.

Interesting idea and if you're a completist fan of Kool & the Gang, you'll want this CD but frankly, the execution and performances of these artists are pretty lacking and weak. Perhaps they were in such awe of tampering with the songs or whatever the reason, to be perfectly honest - most of them sound like they they sang their version in front of a karoke version of Kool & the Gang's music playing in the background.

Some are okay, some interesting but really, overall - mostly flat, weak and adds nothing to Kool & the Gang's original songs. Nothing horrible but really - non-descript and instantly forgettable.

If you like/love the originals - get those instead.

5 out of 5 stars Kool Classics as you have never heard them before..........2004-07-18

This is an amazing double CD tribute compilation - to commemorate 40 years in the business, Kool & The Gang has teamed up and remade many of their top hits top to bottom featuring many of todays most up & coming vocalists and artists. I am quite surprised that this project has not made more of a splash in the states, yet...

There are many remarkable, creative reworkings on the classics here. The song that stands out the most is "Steppin' Out" which features the UKs Beverley Knight. Beverley lights up this track - this song is a perfect way to showcase her talent. She goes all out and the vocal mixing placements are perfect. Easily a chartable track again - some 20 years after it's original street date. And then who is Indi Gregg???? Her remake of "Tonight" is exquisite!! So is her voice. I will be buying her CD next. Then the unthinkable happens - can a remake ever be as potent as the original? Don't answer this until you hear the band "Natural" spill their flavor into "Cherish" What was best known as one of the 80s most sultry ballads is now made to rock in 2004. Catchy as ever...

Last, I have to say that if Kool & The Gang does not release their new track "Serious" here in the states, then it can only mean that they just don't like money, because this track has hit, hit, hit written all over it. It's a remake set to the beat of "Too Hot" featuring Xavier Naidoo & Mousse T. I have only listened to the track once or twice, but I cannot get it out of my head.

Any Kool & The Gang fan out there should really have this to round out their collection - both CDs are very well done. It's their hits, had they been released today. The only guest vocalist missing in this all-star lineup is perhaps the one the fans want to hear most - JT Taylor.

Robert Bell & The Band - you are legends in your own time. Thank you for holding this band together for so many years and for all the good shows, hard work, oh and the MUSIC!! - you are very much appreciated. God Bless you and what the future brings you...
