The best pasodobles.......2007-04-24

Originally conceived as music for La Fiesta Brava or bullfight, the pasodobles presented here by Mariachi Vargas are some of the best within their genre. Whether you love the music of the bullfight or are into ballroom dancing the pasodoble has a catching and infectous, unique style. Filled with emotion the songs sing of passion and evoke the strongest feelings. Seven of the songs are written about famous bullfighters beginning with the "Lorenzo Garza", "Juan Silveti", the great Spaniard "Carlos Arruza", "Capetillo", "Fermin", "Curro Venzor" and the recently departed great Mexican "Silverio" Perez. The homage to La Fiesta Brava and it's best proponents is a thing of beauty. The songs are quite famous amongst aficionados of bullfighting and most recently given new life by ballroom dancing. Not being into ballroom dancing I was surprised to hear pasodobles being used on a television show my wife was watching and had to take a peak. I was surprised but the music does lend itself to dancing quite well. This explains why this is the top selling mariachi disc at Amazon as of this writting. I am sure Maraich Vargas is quite pleased now even though this vintage release was not intended for ballroom dancing but rather for aficionados of La Fiest Brava. Mariachi Vargas is arguably the best mariachi group in the world and you can't go wrong with these interpretations. The arrangements are the best as are the chosen musicians. If you are in the Mariachi Vargas it is because you are the best at what you do. I would recommend this disc for anyone into ballroom dancing or if you just like mariachi or La Fierta Brava.

Classic Mariachi.......2004-01-27

Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan are known as the best mariachi in the world, and it is definitely for a reason. The musicianship is tight, with all of the guitars, trumpets, and strings executed perfectly and beautifully. The beauty, quality, and precision of this recording is so well-executed that one could very well mistake the songs for being performed by an entire orquestra (as opposed to what is really an ancient folk ensemble)! That being said, one must understand a little bit about the pasodoble before really understanding the album. Pasodobles are Spanish marches that traveled to Latin America during the existence of the vast Spanish empire. It thrived in many different Spanish colonies, particularly those in which the old Spanish tradition of bullfighting was popular; however, both bullfighting and the pasodoble became extremely prolific in Mexico. Today, the pasodoble exists as both the traditional music for bullfights as well as a type of song used for ballroom dancing. The songform itself is very interesting; it seems to be a fusion of North African/Moorish melodies with western rhythms and instrumentation. It is particularly beautiful when played by a mariachi ensemble, of which it seems almost made for. In fact, most mariachi groups include at least a few pasodobles in their sets. The song "Lorenzo Garza" makes a perfect introduction to the album, functioning as a strong beckon to the listener. "Por Tapatias" boasts an impressive opening trumpet, and the famous "Juan Silveti" is perhaps the most exciting song on the album, with it's slightly brooding mood. Also, "La Machicha" is a nice addition as well, as it is perhaps one of the "cutest" pasodobles ever composed. Of course, this is all made possible by the capable hands of the world-renown Mariachi Vargas. For a good taste of old Mexico, this is an excellent album of beautiful and exciting music, and a wonderful addition to the many excellent recordings of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. Classic mariachi in its entirety!

Great showcase of an outstanding voice........2001-09-18

This one is slick! I have several of Chente's recordings and they
are all very good. He is most loved for his more macho rancheras
found on many of his other collections, yet it is in this group of 15 ballads that I feel he most expertly uses the top end of his legendary voice to add just the right touch. These songs showcase the full spectrum of his amazing voice in a very smooth but powerfully impressive way. If I could find any fault in some of his rancheras (hard to do) it would be that the top end of his vocals are used a bit too much, and thus do not sound as dramatic as they can in his more balanced tunes. This is not a consideration in this group of tunes. The musicianship is excellent and Vicente's vocals are without comparison. His power and clarity seem to be effortless and he uses the full range to really paint a musical picture in each song.
Most awesome are the catchy tunes "Me Basta", "Preso" and "Todo Se Derrumbo Dentro De Mi" ...and the other twelve! There really are no duds on the disc. I know some Vicente purists will think I'm strange for preferring this disc to some of his other greats but believe me, this is one awesome display of his greatness and an enduring listen. Give it a shot, it's a nice change of pace for Chente fans.

Great! This CD is great, however, I believe that it is wrongly classified as Vicente's 1st CD. I have his first record. It was titled "La Voz Que Usted Esperaba" and includes such hits as "La Copa Rota." Vicente sings it like no other.

In my opinion the Mexico Canta Con El Mariachi Sol De Mexico cd by Jose Hernandez and Mariachi Sol de Mexico is one of their best cd's to date. For more than just the sounds, the style they play with, and for the arrangement of the music.
In the song Mi Tierra Jalisciense, Sol plays a perfect son jalisciense. This style of song is usually a 12/8 rhythmical pattern with sesquealtera and contra tiempos in the melody and manicos. The sound is delivered perfectly throw an even master mix. The melodic line is clear to hear in every song with the base not to far behind. With all this the voice is put on top because of course the words make the song. All other styles are present in the cd including ballads, huapangos, rancheras, and original songs.
The arrangements within this disc are amazing. You hear the Sol style everywhere. Every group has there own way of playing the same songs and Sol makes there sound heard. Jose is an amazing arranger and you will hear it in the Popurris. The transitions are excellent and flow smoothly from one song to another. As far as listening to something new was eighth track, the song Cantar de un Guitarron. This song features the guitarron in all its glory. Played by Pedro Hernandez one of the best guitarron players in the world this song is a testament that the guitarron can play a melody line. This song will prove to be different from any other mariachi song you have ever heard. The disc is also a good by because it incorporates a jazzy, new age fell to it.
Jose Hernandez just doesn't play old Mexico music, but tries to incorporate modern day styling in the voice that works perfect for his group. For example, in the second track Presumido, Jose uses his ability of voice to make the song more easy listening and more pleasurable to the ear. In some of the trumpet fills and some of the solo voice lines you can fell the jazzy technique put into play. I enjoy it extremely because it shows how diverse you can make a mariachi group sound with all the same traditional interments.
I strongly suggest that people buy this disc. You will listen to this cd and be at ease with the sound that is produced. If nothing else tell a friend about this cd because it is worth hearing at least once.
