Album Description

Omara Portuondo, the immensely gifted vocal star of Buena Vista Social Club fame, began her career in the nightclubs of early 1950's Havana - first as a dancer, then as a member of a female vocal quartet. This extremely rare session, recorded in Cuba in 1958, is among the first recordings to feature Omara Portuondo as a soloist and has never been officially released on CD in its original form - until now. An important slice of Cuban music history, sung by one its greatest exponents.

got this album and love every singel song. in my opinion, "tierra sin sol" is the best song. but i also like "nunca imagine, Un Amor Verdadero, and Loco Enamorado"

Super Great Cd.......2004-11-20

I would like to start my off by saying that I have know Jerry Rivera Since 1998 and I think he is a fanstic singer. He makes very nice music and puts hes heart and soul into it.

The review:
I used to have a greatest hits cd from Jerry which was hes Ultimate 22 Hits. Which is a series. But I put it in the trash can because I decided to get all hes cds and this is my 5 cd from Jerry Rivera. I picked it up in my local Walmat for only 6.96. And I did know 2 of the songs as I listend to the cd but they are all fansitic. Its and old cd. 1995. But it was well worth the price I paid. And this cd is well worth 5 stars. Like the other reviewer said its magic. Thank you.

"Magia" There is Magic in this album!.......2000-08-20

"Magia, tus labios tienen magia..." Magic, your lips have magic. Lyrics like that and many more about love and romance make this album another smashing album by Jerry. The album starts out strong and finishes even stronger with "Tierra sin Sol," one of the many great songs on this album. Jerry even delivers a song, "Gracias," about giving thanks to God for his life, family, and his culture. You can't get any better than that. The most memorable tracks to me are "Magia," "Amor Magico," and "Tierra sin Sol." But to be honest they all jam and if you don't have this album you need to get it. It's about love and romance, what else do you want. Get it!

I first heard this song from the movie "My Life without Me".
It's beautiful music. (beautiful enough to make me slow-mo the end credits to find out who the singers are since there is no movie soundtrack produced)

I just started listening to Latin Music about 3 years ago, so i don't know the history that well but i know good music when i hear them.

So if you never heard of her and still hesitating, i think this album is a good one to start.

ps. i don't speak more than 4 words of spanish, if someone could translate the lyrics and post them somewhere, it would be greatly appreciated.

ps2. the lyrics doesn't really matter, for all i know, she could be singing about eating slimy chicken meat while being chased by wild pigs, the music still sound amazing...

If that's true, its very likely that Cuba's "EGREM" or "RTV COMERCIAL" labels may re-issue copies of their own, because of the rarity and value of those recordings. Everything Omara has recorded with Buenavista and other groups in recent years, no doubt has far greater sound, but they don't even come close in value to those original 1958 sessions. Are the early recordings of Nat King Cole, Billie Holliday, Lena Horne, etc. worth preserving and re-issuing, even though their sounds may fall below current expectations? I certainly think so. Why take them away from fans and collectors who enjoy them in spite of shortcomings in sound which, was common during that era, not mention the wear and tear of these masters, now in existance for 42 years! "Magia Negra" is of great value to everyone who was born and grew up in Havana seeing and listening to her sing along with many other giants of our afro-cuban music of yesteryear.

Luis, I am prepared to accept everything you say about the provenance of this recording - your knowledge on the subject is greater than mine. But at the end of the day, most of us just buy recordings for listening pleasure rather than historical interest. It doesnt really matter how bad the master tapes were and how hard they tried to do their best. When the end result is as bad as this, it should come with a warning that the sound quality is inferior to what we are entitled to expect on a (full price) CD. Since the recording company has overlooked it, I thought I would let folks know. I also have to disagree about the relative value of the recordings. "Interesting" is about the best I can do - but for enjoyment, give me the recent recordings any time. These tracks are no doubt rare, but rarity is generally not much of a guide to quality -except that sometimes recordings become rare because they are not thought worth preserving. Sorry Luis, it's still 1 star for me.

You most hear it. What can I say? Only Mucho Corazón pays the cost of the Cd. I don't know what version of the record Amazon sales, but if it is the US version, the Cd doesn't have Esta noche corazon, if you want it you most see Coleccion Original RCA Victor.

Tono....gives a liitle bit of everything in this one........2003-08-07

Out of all Tono Rosario's albums this one is the least listened to of my collection although it's a good album. I think Tono included too many rhythms in one album including a salsa track for the first time and I must say this is not his genre or area of expertise. However, as expected the merengues are sweet and for dancers are just a delight. The two that really stand out are "Tu va vei" and "Estoy contento de estar en mi pais" but there are many other great ones as well. Tono knows how to catch your attention and this album will do just that for the variety that it has to offer. Tono included a merengue apambichao which is the most tradicional you can get in terms of merengue. This album a true example of "el cuco's" diversity but is not one of his bests. I think he has out done himself so many times that it becomes a greater challenge for him to rise above his great work. Nevertheless this is a tremendous album. Other vintage classics are: Amor Jollao, Seguire and Quiero Volver a Empezar.

Tono and His Merengue.......2000-04-14

Tono amazes spectators with every CD. His merengue is a conglomeration of swing and romance. What's important is that Tono brings a new sound to merengue (evident to his earlier production of Alegria). In this Cd Tono places emphasis on trumpet and saxphone. The guira makes selective cuts giving the melody a merengue swing. Every song is different with a different perspective of Tono's life.

I really thought that this album was going to be diffrent in a bad way. DEAD WRONG. Tono has once again brought the CUCONESS to the merengue sound that we know him for. "MI PAIS" is one phat track, "TU VAVEI" is hot, but the rest of the album is definitely "classic" Tono at its best. Even though "Triangulo" and "AEIOU", a salsa and a bachata respectively, do not live up to standards......take my word for it, this album is definitely your money's worth.
