No fat cigar, not even Cuba's gorgeous sunsets, can register close on the sublimity scale to the country's lush, commercially unsullied music, something lots of folks discovered a few years back when a subtle loosening of regulatory strings let the brilliant, boundary-busting Buena Vista Social Club cross the shore. On Cuban Lullaby, another of Ellipsis Arts' impressively packaged, carefully annotated, and sweet-smelling Lullaby series (the scent of lavender, said to promote heavy-liddedness, comes wafting out once the protective plastic is removed), the tradition-steeped African and Spanish elements that fused the Cuban sound fall in for a 16-track close-up--intimacy, after all, is what lullabies are all about. The music moves from lilting piano ("Drume Negrita," "Berceuse a Jessie," "Drume Mobila") to elegant guitar (a different rendition of "Drume Negrita," "Suenos de Colores") to tribal-sounding bata drums ("Oguere"). The set is by turns sweepingly beautiful, twinkly sweet, and rhythmically soothing--no surprise, considering this record's artist roster. Grammy-winning pianist Chucho Valdes, immortal entertainer Bola de Nieve, and Buena Vista Social Club singer Omara Portuondo raise the talent bar to a dizzying level, the right altitude, it turns out, for drifting off to dreamland. If your little one is the lucky intended dozer, leave the light on and read the liner notes. The English translations of these songs, like "El Amor de Caracol y Lombriz," about a snail-worm romance, and "Nana Animalera," describing a late-night all-animal hootenanny, crack a window on Cuban culture, causing, without intending to, sharp regrets that it's been sealed away for so long. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

Enjoyable to listen to, but not for putting kids to sleep........2006-01-31
For sleeping yes, for spanish no.......2005-08-31
1) How many versions of Duerme Negrita can they put on one album? Aren't there other songs Cuban mamas y papas sing to their little ones?
2) If you're hoping to introduce your little one to the Spanish language, quite a few of these songs are in afro-cuban dialect.
Enjoy!

One of the best latin albums of 2005.......2006-01-24
La Zalamera: Full of rhythm, techno, bass...definitely you have to shake at least your shoulders! One of my favorites.
Rumores del barrio: Salsa-son about "gossips in the neighborhood", a very typical situation in Dominican Republic, talking about everyone's lifes.
Un rato en la gloria: Talks about the sadly situation of youngs prostitutes, good lyrics with nice rhythm.
Más que suficiente: It's about the relationship with God and its love. Its a soft song with great combination of sound elements only as Chichi knows to do.
Cuenta la historia: Recounts about another Dominican Republic drama: Passionate crimes, women and their children killed by their jealous husbands.
Te pienso: Another great song that talks about the beautifull feelings of love. Nice to dance with your own love.
Hoy he vuelto a pensar en ti: Nice, nice, nice, nice...!
Tamborada: Another of my favorites!
Mire a vei: Rythmical love song. My third favorite!
Oceano: Soft Jazz-bolero-bachata fusion about love
Chichi achieved in this album another great fusion: Social complaint and love wrapped in a rhythmical and danceable work.
Chichi Dit it Again! Mucho mas que Suficiente!.......2005-10-16
The wait was worth it! this is without a doubt an award wining cd from one of the world's best musicians.

Album Description
The future sound of Little Havana, Miami, usa. This full-length CD of live digital recordings from the notorious weekly at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, Miami ('iFuacata!' translates loosely as Pow! or Wham!) documents the spam allstars' modern, Pan-American dance music. Seemlessly fusing funk, Miami bass, hip hop, dub, free jazz, descarga, guaguanco, and Afro-beat, " . . . an original concept in nightlife, a new Miami sound that has been described as a 'de-emphasis of the obvious', a 'controlled dissonance' and even a 'deconstructed rumba' . . ." (New York Times). Original eight-panel artwork by Lebo.

Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries..........2005-09-27
But you got it all here. You got the funky salsa soul of Azuquita a la "Pura Salsa" (check out "Guarjio Bacan" and tell me I'm lyin'). You got the groove of Joe Bataan before he committed blasphemy with disco-horror. You got the dripping grease of Willie Bobo, funkiness of Lebron Brothers, Patato, Candido, Tito Puente in his (Pa'lante Straight days), etc. Brothers/sisters you got more here than I can even say. Then you got some good ol' as* bumpin' Miami Bass and groove. It don't get no better nowheres.
Finally, brother John...gotta say this. Those of you see that review down below by John Speck? Well cats/kittens, know this...he be the 'bone player for this outfit. So, that let's you know where he might be coming from. Also does a thing or two with his own outfit called Bacon Bits, but he's a dam* fine member of this group and an equally fine 'bone player. But, just wanted to let it be known since he didn't see fit to disclose it himself.
Get this now...plus, if you hadn't already known, you'll get introduced to the MAGNIFICENT artwork of LEBO...also present on the Vida Blue release which these boys joined in on. Check out LEBO's work elsewhere (like his website for instance) and tell me you won't get addicted.
Enjoy.

Fantabulous!.......2005-04-24
This is one of my all-time favorite CD's. You can't help but move. I've slipped this on at parties and watched people as they start to dance without even being aware of it. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Nice and Funky.......2004-04-26
funky cuban salsa lounge music.......2004-01-27
AND it has the BASS to back it all up and drop the B-Boys popping and locking, doing aerials, and all kindsa ferked up gymnastic sheet.
Yeah.
Oh. and did I mention that I've seen them tickle the Baby Boomers, whether during a mellow evening and a glass of wine, or a quick and frisky foxtrot. It can all be done to the Cuban Funky Spam Jam, man.
True that!

Wonderful classic rumba.......2007-02-24
This album is (as the liner notes say) the first authorized recording of the group, and it's a gem. Each track sparkles with virtuosity. My personal favorites would be tracks 3, 4 and of course the classic Que Viva Chango (the first commercially-recorded song which made explicit reference to the orishas).
Part of the group's appeal is the way in which they fuse together elements of different rhythms. Tawiri (track 4) for instance is a blistering fusion of palo and guaguanco, while Ve y Dile a Tu Mamita (track 3) juxtaposes a son clave pattern over a fat (and phat) yambu. The vocal work as always provides yet more layers of complexity such that this album is a joy to listen to from end to end.

Dominican singer-percussionist Chichi Peralta makes De Vuelta al Barrio an international affair. Recorded in the Dominican Republic and England and partially mixed in the U.S., this album also reflects an understanding of world rhythms that allows Peralta to mix and match effortlessly and convincingly. De Vuelta is most successful when Peralta takes the biggest chances: "El Beso de Judas" is a four-minute meld of psychedelic guitar effects, Brazilian percussion, sitar, and droning chant that would bring a smile to Os Mutantes' faces, while "Baila Venga Chichi" is handily and intensely rapped. A few tracks get bogged down in lite-radio clichés, but moments like the child's giggles at the end of "Hasta Que Lo Pierde" underscore the record's status as an intriguingly personal addition to the Latin-pop canon. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Thank you ChiChi.
The difficult second album!.......2000-08-06
My initial reaction, comparing it to "Pa' Otro La'o", was slight disappointment, but I think it has to be recognised that that CD was something very special indeed and would be hard to emulate (anybody starting with Chichi Peralta should buy that one rather than this).
His arrangements are always exciting and inventive, and really shine on many tracks with surprises around every corner. Occasionally, things become a bit cluttered, and I found the American light soully feel of some of the singing watered down some of the Latin spirit.
Certainly, Jandy Feliz (singer and songwriter on the first CD) is missed, both for his distinctive voice and his more melodic, catchy songwriting - he and Chichi combined made an unbeatable team, but there is still some great music on here.
Chichi Peralta is one of the most talented, creative Latin musicians around and maintains his high standard here, while perhaps not quite matching the heights of his brilliant first CD.
His new CD is a suave blend of his many musical influences........2000-07-28
Disappointing, with a reason.......2000-07-17
Turns out this shouldn't be surprising; the creator of key anchor tracks in the previous effort ("Amor Narcotico", "Pa' Otro La'o", "Un Dia Mas", "Procura", and "Limon con Sal", fully half of the record and almost every hit), Jandy Feliz, who was also the vocalist, is no longer with the group, reportedly because of differences with Peralta over getting greater credit for hiswork. And it shows.
Boy, does it show. The album is a pale shadow of the debut. Save your money and spend it on "Pa' Otro La'o" instead.
