No fat cigar, not even Cuba's gorgeous sunsets, can register close on the sublimity scale to the country's lush, commercially unsullied music, something lots of folks discovered a few years back when a subtle loosening of regulatory strings let the brilliant, boundary-busting Buena Vista Social Club cross the shore. On Cuban Lullaby, another of Ellipsis Arts' impressively packaged, carefully annotated, and sweet-smelling Lullaby series (the scent of lavender, said to promote heavy-liddedness, comes wafting out once the protective plastic is removed), the tradition-steeped African and Spanish elements that fused the Cuban sound fall in for a 16-track close-up--intimacy, after all, is what lullabies are all about. The music moves from lilting piano ("Drume Negrita," "Berceuse a Jessie," "Drume Mobila") to elegant guitar (a different rendition of "Drume Negrita," "Suenos de Colores") to tribal-sounding bata drums ("Oguere"). The set is by turns sweepingly beautiful, twinkly sweet, and rhythmically soothing--no surprise, considering this record's artist roster. Grammy-winning pianist Chucho Valdes, immortal entertainer Bola de Nieve, and Buena Vista Social Club singer Omara Portuondo raise the talent bar to a dizzying level, the right altitude, it turns out, for drifting off to dreamland. If your little one is the lucky intended dozer, leave the light on and read the liner notes. The English translations of these songs, like "El Amor de Caracol y Lombriz," about a snail-worm romance, and "Nana Animalera," describing a late-night all-animal hootenanny, crack a window on Cuban culture, causing, without intending to, sharp regrets that it's been sealed away for so long. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable to listen to, but not for putting kids to sleep........2006-01-31

Our whole family loves listening to this CD. However, as you might be able to tell from the product description, the music starts off softly lulling children to sleep and then picks up the beat and volume in the later part. So, just when my kids were starting to relax-they suddenly felt like dancing. We solved the problem by using the feature on our CD player which allows us to pre-program only the songs we want for bedtime. Really a nice collection of songs.

4 out of 5 stars For sleeping yes, for spanish no.......2005-08-31

This album is beautiful and should certainly put your little one to sleep. Many of the songs have a kind of aching lonliness, and the musicianship is spectacular. Two cautions:
1) How many versions of Duerme Negrita can they put on one album? Aren't there other songs Cuban mamas y papas sing to their little ones?
2) If you're hoping to introduce your little one to the Spanish language, quite a few of these songs are in afro-cuban dialect.

Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Poor musical quality.......2005-06-29

We were very disappointed with the musical quality of the CD. The artist's command of pitch was lacking.

5 out of 5 stars la fairy azul.......2004-08-10

5 out of 5 stars Rare Gem.......2004-05-31

I am Cuban-American and found two rare gems this year. This CD, CUBAN LULLABY and the Cuban-American bilingual children's picturebook set in Cuban Miami's Little Havana Calle Ocho Festival, DRUM, CHAVI, DRUM!/TOCA, CHAVI, TOCA! The characters, author and illustrator are Cuban. These two recommendations are for children, but if you're Cuban-American or Latina/o you will relish in these two items no matter how old you are.

10 stars to both items!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best latin albums of 2005.......2006-01-24

I have been a Chichi Peralta fan from his beginnings and i compare this CD with his first production "amor narcótico": full of joy, lyrics, rhythm!

La Zalamera: Full of rhythm, techno, bass...definitely you have to shake at least your shoulders! One of my favorites.

Rumores del barrio: Salsa-son about "gossips in the neighborhood", a very typical situation in Dominican Republic, talking about everyone's lifes.

Un rato en la gloria: Talks about the sadly situation of youngs prostitutes, good lyrics with nice rhythm.

Más que suficiente: It's about the relationship with God and its love. Its a soft song with great combination of sound elements only as Chichi knows to do.

Cuenta la historia: Recounts about another Dominican Republic drama: Passionate crimes, women and their children killed by their jealous husbands.

Te pienso: Another great song that talks about the beautifull feelings of love. Nice to dance with your own love.

Hoy he vuelto a pensar en ti: Nice, nice, nice, nice...!

Tamborada: Another of my favorites!

Mire a vei: Rythmical love song. My third favorite!

Oceano: Soft Jazz-bolero-bachata fusion about love

Chichi achieved in this album another great fusion: Social complaint and love wrapped in a rhythmical and danceable work.

5 out of 5 stars Chichi Dit it Again! Mucho mas que Suficiente!.......2005-10-16

WOW, what can I say about this album. I just got it hours ago and I haven't stop listening to it. Chichi's music takes u right into his world from the minute that you open the cd case. The art work explains his message, the vivid colors, the much thoughtout pictures and then the best lisenting to the cd. The masterpiece of this year. From La Zalamera to Mas Que Suficiente, and Te Pienso. Chichi is stronger than ever, delivering his message one of the best way ever done.
The wait was worth it! this is without a doubt an award wining cd from one of the world's best musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Chichi Peralta Y Son Familia - Mas Que Suficiente.......2005-10-14

Rich fusion of sound colors... Highly artistic original music... Chichi Peralta constantly in search of fresh musical ideas combining the old and the new... This CD doesn't sound like anything that's being created by mainstream Latin artists... Superb percussion performance as always... Tropical sounds and rhythms with strong African roots fused with contemporary acoustic and electronic elements... This is an artwork of tropical music for the next generation. A must have for all serious music lovers!

The future sound of Little Havana, Miami, usa.

This full-length CD of live digital recordings from the notorious weekly at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, Miami ('iFuacata!' translates loosely as Pow! or Wham!) documents the spam allstars' modern, Pan-American dance music. Seemlessly fusing funk, Miami bass, hip hop, dub, free jazz, descarga, guaguanco, and Afro-beat, " . . . an original concept in nightlife, a new Miami sound that has been described as a 'de-emphasis of the obvious', a 'controlled dissonance' and even a 'deconstructed rumba' . . ." (New York Times). Original eight-panel artwork by Lebo.

5 out of 5 stars Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries..........2005-09-27

Aye, c*no...esto es verdad. This is the sho-nuff greasy dripping stuff. I mean it's for real, ya dig? Ain't no mistake about it...plus, anybody, and I mean anybody who uses samples from the comedy of Alvarez Guedes is already doing something right. But, truth be known, I've been catching these guys live at their Fuacta show at Hoy Como Ayer for longer than I care to admit. Then came Jazid shows, I/O shows, other misc. shows, what have you. Bottom line, if they are playing in Miami, I'm there. Even been up to NYC and caught them there.

But you got it all here. You got the funky salsa soul of Azuquita a la "Pura Salsa" (check out "Guarjio Bacan" and tell me I'm lyin'). You got the groove of Joe Bataan before he committed blasphemy with disco-horror. You got the dripping grease of Willie Bobo, funkiness of Lebron Brothers, Patato, Candido, Tito Puente in his (Pa'lante Straight days), etc. Brothers/sisters you got more here than I can even say. Then you got some good ol' as* bumpin' Miami Bass and groove. It don't get no better nowheres.

Finally, brother John...gotta say this. Those of you see that review down below by John Speck? Well cats/kittens, know this...he be the 'bone player for this outfit. So, that let's you know where he might be coming from. Also does a thing or two with his own outfit called Bacon Bits, but he's a dam* fine member of this group and an equally fine 'bone player. But, just wanted to let it be known since he didn't see fit to disclose it himself.

Get this now...plus, if you hadn't already known, you'll get introduced to the MAGNIFICENT artwork of LEBO...also present on the Vida Blue release which these boys joined in on. Check out LEBO's work elsewhere (like his website for instance) and tell me you won't get addicted.

    Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Nice and Funky.......2004-04-26

I bought this CD and became a fan of spam allstars. Since then I've tried to go to all their shows and they were all amazing. This album is impossible not to pop to! Great original sounds. For anyone who likes funk and/or latin will enjoy this a lot. Theire new album is coming out on 5/7/04 by the way and it should pretty awesome, so keep an eye out for it!

5 out of 5 stars funky cuban salsa lounge music.......2004-01-27

This disc will not only enhance whatever groove your in tenfold, but it will culturally edify your cuban american spanish palate (i.e. teaching you to say s@#t-eater in Spanish, demonstrate the vibe of "la sowesera" or the "southwest part" of Miami on a hot afternoon at the dominoe park.)

AND it has the BASS to back it all up and drop the B-Boys popping and locking, doing aerials, and all kindsa ferked up gymnastic sheet.

    Yeah.

Oh. and did I mention that I've seen them tickle the Baby Boomers, whether during a mellow evening and a glass of wine, or a quick and frisky foxtrot. It can all be done to the Cuban Funky Spam Jam, man.

    True that!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful classic rumba.......2007-02-24

Clave y Guaguanco are rough contemporaries of the much more famous (at least to US gringos) Munequitos de Matanzas. They have an equally rootsy sound but are more representative of the Havana style of rumba which is a little more suave but no less rhythmically complex.

This album is (as the liner notes say) the first authorized recording of the group, and it's a gem. Each track sparkles with virtuosity. My personal favorites would be tracks 3, 4 and of course the classic Que Viva Chango (the first commercially-recorded song which made explicit reference to the orishas).

Part of the group's appeal is the way in which they fuse together elements of different rhythms. Tawiri (track 4) for instance is a blistering fusion of palo and guaguanco, while Ve y Dile a Tu Mamita (track 3) juxtaposes a son clave pattern over a fat (and phat) yambu. The vocal work as always provides yet more layers of complexity such that this album is a joy to listen to from end to end.

Dominican singer-percussionist Chichi Peralta makes De Vuelta al Barrio an international affair. Recorded in the Dominican Republic and England and partially mixed in the U.S., this album also reflects an understanding of world rhythms that allows Peralta to mix and match effortlessly and convincingly. De Vuelta is most successful when Peralta takes the biggest chances: "El Beso de Judas" is a four-minute meld of psychedelic guitar effects, Brazilian percussion, sitar, and droning chant that would bring a smile to Os Mutantes' faces, while "Baila Venga Chichi" is handily and intensely rapped. A few tracks get bogged down in lite-radio clichés, but moments like the child's giggles at the end of "Hasta Que Lo Pierde" underscore the record's status as an intriguingly personal addition to the Latin-pop canon. --Rickey Wright

1 out of 5 stars Es de el Barrio.......2005-09-08

I bought this cd because it came up under "guaguanco". I assure you it is not even close. Its more along the lines of Latin pop and its not even good music to boot. I hope his other albums are better b/c this one is a flop! If you've never heard of Chichi Peralta, don't even worry about it!

      5 out of 5 stars Sin Cortinas.......2001-01-18

I have had the pleasure of listening to both of ChiChi's cds and I love them both. This one, however, has reached deep into my soul. The distinctive rhythms and sounds displayed in his music clearly show what an artist he really is.

      Thank you ChiChi.

4 out of 5 stars The difficult second album!.......2000-08-06

3 and a half stars if that rating were possible. This is mostly a very good CD, well worth a listen, and it grows on you too.

My initial reaction, comparing it to "Pa' Otro La'o", was slight disappointment, but I think it has to be recognised that that CD was something very special indeed and would be hard to emulate (anybody starting with Chichi Peralta should buy that one rather than this).

His arrangements are always exciting and inventive, and really shine on many tracks with surprises around every corner. Occasionally, things become a bit cluttered, and I found the American light soully feel of some of the singing watered down some of the Latin spirit.

Certainly, Jandy Feliz (singer and songwriter on the first CD) is missed, both for his distinctive voice and his more melodic, catchy songwriting - he and Chichi combined made an unbeatable team, but there is still some great music on here.

Chichi Peralta is one of the most talented, creative Latin musicians around and maintains his high standard here, while perhaps not quite matching the heights of his brilliant first CD.

5 out of 5 stars His new CD is a suave blend of his many musical influences........2000-07-28

His unique style of blending bachata, merengue and salsa is what makes his music exciting and like no other. His talent and inovation make his music memorable and a pleasure to listen to. He is good!

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing, with a reason.......2000-07-17

After the sheer enjoyment I got of his previous work, "Pa' Otro La'o", I had high hopes for this album. Alas, those hopes are mashed; most tracks are muddled and uninspiring, with a few interesting flashes here and there that hardly justifiy the purchase. More noticeably, not a single track has the "pull you to the dance floor" feel that was almost everywhere in the previous debut. This "fuson" stuff is for the birds.

Turns out this shouldn't be surprising; the creator of key anchor tracks in the previous effort ("Amor Narcotico", "Pa' Otro La'o", "Un Dia Mas", "Procura", and "Limon con Sal", fully half of the record and almost every hit), Jandy Feliz, who was also the vocalist, is no longer with the group, reportedly because of differences with Peralta over getting greater credit for hiswork. And it shows.

Boy, does it show. The album is a pale shadow of the debut. Save your money and spend it on "Pa' Otro La'o" instead.

If you are into Cuban rumba music and enjoy Los Munequitos or Los Papines you will love this cd. Contreras voice is great and Patato is awesome. There might be more athletic people on the congas, like Giovanni Hidalgo but Patato was and is the King.

          Album Description

"Saborit is the real thing … this traditional band from the Cuban countryside brings home the feeling of a bygone era." - fRoots

From the heart of the of the sugar lands of Eastern Cuba comes the first Tumi recording from this traditional eight piece group! Based in Manzanillo (home to Candido Fabre and David Alvarez) and directed by Leon Alarcon, Saborit have remained close to their country roots. The group uses traditional campesino instruments like laud and tres to perform music influenced by Caribbean sounds like cumbia as well as Cuban son and guarachas.
