Customer Reviews:
Trailer Park Musical a good hear........2007-05-15
This musical is a good laugh and can bring up the spirits of any musical theatre buff. The voices are excellent and they showcase a great characterization of the personages represented in the show. It is a CD that entices the listener to go ahead and get tickets to the show and go see it. Also a personal acquaintance of mine Leslie Kritzer does a phenomenal job on the CD.
A Tornado of Fun!.......2007-04-10
This seems to be my year for finding recordings of lesser known musicals that are just awesome. It started with buying Zombie Prom, and continues with The Great American Trailer Park Musical!
But this show is just all-out fun! The tunes are catchy (I got one of them running through my head, right now) and the lyrics are quite clever. The three main ladies become the Greek chorus, telling us about life in their trailer park, Armadillo Acres, located in Starke, Florida. The show then focuses on one agoraphobic housewife who hasn't left her trailer in 20 years, and her husband who has had enough and starts fooling around with a stripper who is on the run from her boyfriend. Sound crazy? It is! And a whole lotta fun!
Yes, there are some explicit lyrics, but nothing excessive. So do yourself a favor and give this album a listen. You might just want to move into your own "manufactured home" before you know it.
One Of My Favorite New Musicals In Years.......2007-01-31
When I tell people about this show, I tell them it is far better than it had to be... With a title like that, the audience draw is already built in, but with great songs and a very clever story (without ever being offensive or degrading) this musical is a fun hit. And while it is not the old-school "Okalhoma" style musical, there are a lot of musical niceties about the show - layered melody lines, tight harmonies and clever clever phrases and lyrics. I fully recommend it.
The show (and Recording) ROCKS.......2006-09-26
The whole point of theatre, even in a tongue-in-cheek satire like this one, is to have some sense of truth. The "Great American Trailer Park Musical" completely hits the target dead-on. With it's ridiculous pop culture references, use of white trash musical pastiche (honky tonk country, corporate rock, wedding disco, and the like), and general use of bad taste in a visual (and audio) aesthetic, the show is one loaded joke that never tires. And the over the top performances, all grounded in this evident truth, provide an evening of Laugh after Laugh - more so than similar pieces like "Urinetown" and "Altar Boys".
Sure the language, for those who have expressed concern in above reviews, can be strong at times. But never is the language used in a matter of fact fashion. For those who have ever even remotely hung around a trailer park (as it quite Clearly states in the TITLE) or even around those who inhabit a Sociologists Jackpot of research, You know that crude humor and strong language are staple of the norm.
"Oklahoma" and "Cats" this show is not. However, "Great American Trailer Park Musical" is a definite piece to listen and pay attention to. With the general climate of new musicals to be either repackaged musicals from movies (Wedding Singer, Hairspray, Footloose, etc) or jukebox musicals (Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Hot Feet, etc) - there is a new genre that is emerging, the "in-joke" musical. Trailer Park, Altar Boys, Spelling Bee, and title of show are examples of this. These are shows that blur satire and exaggeration with real life all the while dealing in a specific subject matter.
"Trailer Park" is a hip, new and exciting piece of music theatre, even if not groundbreaking. For those who like to play it safe may I suggest the "20 Great Broadway ShowStoppers" CD - all songs are from 1932 to 1949. You will be sure no profane language will infect you there.
Wasn't That Funny.......2006-07-29
I gave this a good listen, but did not find it all that funny ... or memorable.

A True Group Effort.......2007-03-06
Few groups are able to drastically change their musical direction and maintain their popularity. Somehow, the Doobies were able to pull it off, with great success. I'm sure it was difficult for a lot of fans to swallow the sweet soulful sounds of Michael McDonald when they were expecting the chunky rhythms of Tom Johnston's guitar. No doubt the Doobies lost fans from the Johnston camp but gained listeners who appreciated the new sound.
One Step Closer continued a string of albums tailor made for top 40/smooth jazz type stations. Overall, the songs are catchy, and you get the feeling that all the members left their mark on the album. Real Love and One Step Closer are the clear standouts, but Keep This Train A-Rollin'and Just In Time are excellent tracks as well.
Good Smooth Lite Rock.......2005-02-22
This was another great smooth mellow cd from the Michael McDonald led era of the Doobie Brothers. This album was released in the fall of 1980. The hit single "Real Love" is one of there best songs ever in my opinion. The second hit single was "One Step Closer" with Cornelius Bumpus and McDonald sharing the lead vocals. The instrumental song "South Bay Strut" and McDonald's "Dedicate This Heart" and "Keep This Train Rollin" are also standout songs. The whole cd is pretty good lite rock. There is more saxophone on this cd with the addition of Cornelius Bumpus to the band. This was also the Doobies first album with John McFee on guitar replacing Jeff Skunk Baxter and Chet McCracken on drums, replacing John Hartman.
compulsively listenable, arresting groove music.......2004-11-11
How anyone could find The Doobie Brothers' 1980 album "One Step Closer" a disappointment is absolutely incredible to me. It's true that, to a large extent, they're treading familiar territory here, both stylistically & sonically, with basically the entire album having a 'jazzy' soft rock sound that screams out "late 70s"/"early '80s". However, "Takin' It To The Streets" and "Livin' On The Fault Line" are each MUCH weaker albums than "One Step Closer". This album shows that you can make music that is very relaxed without being dull--the lush sound, the sophisticated creativity and catchiness of the compositions, & the spirited performances make for an album that is compulsively listenable & immensely satisfying. Certainly it's very professional, and there are a bunch of different people who contributed to the songwriting (each track features a different songwriting battery), but it's unfair and inaccurate to say that the album is uninspired or that it is merely workmanlike. "Real Love" is a dramatic song about the toll empty relationships can take on people, & it features an incredible, soulful vocal from Michael McDonald who's in peak vocal form throughout the album. The late Cornelius Bumpus, who had joined the band by this point, sounds great as well--he shares the lead vocals with McDonald on the title track, & gets in a solo composition with the superb "Thank You Love" which mixes wondrous, contemplative music with feel-good lyrics (and is additionally punctuated by some great vibraphone). McDonald & Patrick Simmons both offer one solo composition apiece with "Keep This Train A-Rollin'" & "Just In Time" respectively (with Simmons doing a highly amusing Steven Tyler soundalike at 1:23 on the latter), & both are funky, hook-filled tunes that are impossible to resist. Also irresistible is the ingeniously crafted and infectious "Dedicate This Heart", which is kinda like an upbeat, bouncier variation on "Real Love", and features another marvelous McDonald vocal performance. The feel-good title track is admittedly a tad sugary, but it's so undeniably catchy it's impossible not to be forgiving. I'll admit that the last two tracks are a bit filler-ish--the instrumental "South Bay Strut" is somewhat aimless, & the upbeat "One By One" feels a tad underdeveloped, but they're still both quite good & enjoyable. All in all, not a lot to complain about with this album whatsoever--with the intricate detail that's packed into track after track, the album is simply brimming with catchiness. Chalk up another great production job for Ted Templeman who produced many records by Warner Bros. artists during this time, including Nicolette Larson who appears on this album as a background vocalist. If you're into 'jazzy' soft rock of this era such as Steely Dan, George Benson, & Grover Washington Jr., you can't go wrong with this superb album by The Doobie Brothers.
A classic album!.......2004-11-01
I've loved this album for years. There's not a bad song on here. I've always thought the title track was fantastic and that it ranks among the greatest songs by The Doobie Brothers. It really jams!
Other favorites on here are Real Love, Dedicate This Heart, and One By One. As I indicated before, I don't think there's a bad song on here.
I can see how fans of the pre-Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers might not love this album, but I've always preferred the Michael McDonald era.
If you're a fan of that era, then you can't go wrong with getting this album.
Good Doobie Stuff.......2004-08-28
I think this album was almost as good as Minute By Minute, but not quite. It has more of a jazzy feel to me. I don't think anyone who likes the Doobies as they existed with Michael McDonald would be sorry they bought this. Seems like the horns took a more prominent role on this album compared to previous ones, but that's just another reason to enjoy the varied sounds of a great group of musicians. Still a favorite of mine.

Customer Reviews:
To bad because they were an excellent band........2007-06-29
The String Cheese Incident started to loose fans after their 4th studio album "Untying the Knot",but they totally lost their fan base with release of this album and that led to the band breaking up. It's to bad because they were one of the best bluegrass oriented "Jam Bands" around. If you want to listen to SCI buy any of the first 3 studio albums (the best being "Round the Wheel" and then "Born on the Wrong Planet") or any live release.
Awful Waste of Money.......2006-08-21
Save your money on this one. It's SOOOOOOO bland- with no jams!
What a disappointment. Can I get a refund?
Like a fine wine..........2006-06-08
At first I could see why some of the others gave this album low marks. It's a bit different from what you might expect from a SCI album - it stays fairly mellow and grounded (although "Swampy Water" rips along with a heavier sound) and has a steady mood throughout (with a couple exceptions, like "Rainbow Serpent"). But like a fine wine, it has gotten better with time and I have grown to love its smooth, relaxed overall sound. It is now one of my favorite albums. I appreciate that the album represents the bands democratic workings in that every member contributed - wrote and did lead vocals - on at least two songs. Their vocals have a noticable improvement on this album. The album should not be compared to their "live" style because I believe it's comparing "apples and oranges." However, I look forward to their upcoming tour because many of these songs will transition into excellent live versions. The album is refreshing and is best enjoyed laying outside on a warm spring day. The title track, is my favorite at the moment.
natural progression through cheese.......2006-02-25
This is an album that features Keith on vocals more so than in the past, which is awesome because he is a great vocalist in addition to being on bass. Just because Les C. is the most different bassist ever doesn't mean Keith can't Rockit on the bass Cheesy style (hint hint....new cover song to play). The Cheese does the Chameleon and they gotta do the Rockit!!!. Of course we all know Mike, Travis, Kyle, and Bill are great vocalists / players as always. I'm still listening to the Hann because I am a piano player and mostly focus in on Kyle's notes. I'm sure if him and Travis did some Hart & Kreutzmann style drum duos, that would also certainly Rockit!
The Cheese has certainly progressed/evolved throughout the ages and this album is something I could definitely see the Cheese rounding the wheel to. It's very chill and I simply like it.
Cheese!
Basic and Boring.......2006-02-03
I rather like the studio efforts that SCI has put out, however this record just bores me. The songwriting is very simplistic and I find it very hard to listen to the album all the way through. There are a couple of times that the songs seem to be about to go somewhere, but they just end. I'm not talking about ten minute jams, but just some sort of memorable hook or melody.
This album will turn a number of songs into live anthems, maybe, but then again, most Cheese songs translate live much better than on record. I gave this two stars for a Cheese record, though nothing on here is actually bad, just unassuming. If you are new to SCI, you should probably start somewhere else. If you are an old fan, then save your money for a concert.

Customer Reviews:
Kenny Neal's third Telarc album is his most diverse yet.......2005-07-16
Not a blues record per se, "One Step Closer" mixes blues, R&B, soul, folk and rock n' roll, and T-Bone Wolk's mandolin and the acoustic violin of Mary Jo Carlsen add a rootsy folk-like atmosphere on several songs.
But Kenny Neal still sings like he is singing the blues. His voice is getting rougher and grittier with every new release, but it still retains its wonderful flexibility and soulfulness. To me, he has evolved into one of the best contemporary American blues and/or rock singers...he is that good.
And "One Step Closer" is really good as well. Unlike Neal's previous albums it relies very heavily on covers...only two of these twelve songs are written or co-written by Kenny Neal himself, and that worries me a bit. His songwriting skills used to be one of his biggest assets, but here you only find one solo composition from his hand...and it's not even all that great. Hopefully he hasn't spent his muse.
Still, these are generally very well chosen covers. The opener, "No More One More Chance", is the kind of blues-rock-soul fusion which Neal himself used to write, and he does very well by John Hiatt on an acoustic "Lovers Will".
Other highlights include the soulful "One Step Closer To The Blues", the blues "Back Door Tipper", and most notably a magnificent rendition of Bob Dylan's and Helena Spring's soulful slow rock number "Walk Out In The Rain", which was originally written for Eric Clapton. Neal's expressive voice is perfect for that song, and his is by far the best and grittiest version ever recorded. (Dylan never recorded it himself.)
I could have done without a remake of Sonny Landreth's "Congo Square", and a couple of other songs don't hold up too well either, but most of what's here is very good. I only wish Kenny Neal would have penned a few more songs himself.
If you're new to Raful Neal's son Kenny, I'd start with his best Alligator album, "Hoodoo Moon", but fans will definitely want this one in their collection as well. It's just about as good as his previous Telarc record, "What You Got", and better than his first, "Blues Fallin' Down Like Rain".
The title says it all.......2001-07-30
Kenny is One Step Closer to becoming one of the best contemporary N'awlins blues artists. This is a hard-hitting release that jumps off the CD with a kick-in-the-butt. Kenny's roots come out strong, including the funky squeeze box in the background. But he takes the Bayou-style blues one step closer to contemporary blues-rock music, and has a great album on his hands. Lookin for the next one....
masterpiece.......2001-07-15
ive been a fan since the beginning and this cd is great, when i first put the cd on i was blown away. every song is great the cd is more laid back with great vocal and lyrics. my fav song is a rockin tune called "whiskey train". great cover of bob dylans "walk out in the rain". very enjoyable cd

As good in english as in spanish!.......2000-07-09
I just bought this album and I can't begin to tell you, how impressed I was to know that this singer can sing so good in english! I have the spanish version (I've always loved Marta) but this one is a total jewel, her pronunciation is awsome, her sounds takes you to the most exotic pop you can listen to. The duet with Italian Tenor Bocelli, is remarkable, Slash's guitar on the title track make this record even more desirable. All you need to do is order it, and confirm what I just wrote.
Marta we are just waiting for you're new album late this year, in the meantime listen to this one.
Marta does it again,.......1999-04-05
"One Step Closer" is all in English except for the last track. It's an amazing alum, Marta show that she can sing as beautifully in English as in Spanish, there are even moments when she reminds me of Madonna or Louise. The CD is a collection of songs by Marta in English, though not all of them, plus, it contains new ones like "One Step Closer"(Moja Mi Corazon), "If I Ever Lose This Heaven"(Negro Azabache), and "Sexy Look"(Sexy Look). GREAT JOB, I love this album.

Out of all the vocals, only Lucy's voice was nice. The starting was terrible. Who's singing it?? Sounds like a baby's voice! Totally unoriginal! Stole almost all songs from S Club and S Club 8! None of them, except Lucy, are talented...American Juniors are a total rip-off...American Idol is so damn better..I dun think the group will get any further at all!!.. May they have a windfall! I'd recommend you guys to buy singles/albums from S Club 8 instead of this crap...
