As a sideline to his main job as producer and executive at RCA in the '60s, Atkins recorded many instrumental albums of contemporary pop and country hits, but this 1966 disc stands out from the others because of what it reveals about Nashville's influence on the Beatles and vice versa. It was Atkins, after all, who produced the Everly Brothers' early Cadence singles and played the limpid, lyrical lead guitar on them, and those records had a profound effect on Paul McCartney's songwriting and George Harrison's guitar playing. Atkins obviously has fun with these early Lennon-McCartney compositions. He plays slide guitar on "I Feel Fine," gives "Yesterday" an arpeggiated Appalachian feel, transforms "Can't Buy Me Love" into a Buck Owens Bakersfield song, emphasizes the Johnny Cash-like, low-string guitar figure on "I'll Cry Instead," and turns "She's a Woman" into a honky-tonk two-step. --Geoffrey Himes

If you like Chet Atkins and the Beatles music Chet does justice to
the Beatles music. Chet was one the greatest guitarist of this
era he plays any style and makes it convincing. I really enjoy
this album. Anyone who likes Chet's playing and the Beatles music
should like this recording. Actually I had this album in vinyl and
wore it out and I am now replacing it with the cd.

Quite nice versions of beatles standards. Exc harp blowing from Charlie McCoy and guitar lines way beyond original. Gives a taste of 60's nashville studio recordings, iow high quality in few takes (mostly direct w/o overdubs) and well-made arr. Best sound on vinyl though...

Tennessean pickin' Meet the Mersey Sound.......2004-11-17

Excellent. If you're into The Beatles and have a liking to sixties instrumentals with that guitar twang, this is a treat. Chet Atkins captures the sounds of the times with his rendition of the fab four's recordings. He basically covers the early Beatles up to the Rubber Soul period. This is a timeless collection that I really enjoyed. I particularly thought he did a good job at "I'll Follow The Sun," "She's a Woman," and the rumba soundings of "I Feel Fine."

This would be a great addition to any diehard Beatle fans collection.

It's soft. It's mellow. It's really quite good. Nice guitar pickin' on Chet's part, and McCoy's harmonica playing on many of the tunes is outstanding. I would have liked to have seen Chet pick on somebody more challenging for his level of playing like Jimi Hendrix instead of the Beatles.

Nashville Meets The Beatles On This Classic Reissue.......2000-04-13

"Chet Atkins Picks On The Beatles" is a virtuoso performance by one of music's renaissance men: guitarist, producer, executive Chet Atkins. With a first-rate band (including harmonica master Charlie McCoy) Chet and friends find hidden countermelodies and deeper meanings in 12 Beatle songs already standards by this 1966 release.

Atkins clear, ringing guitar burrows in and out of low blues grooves in "Hard Day's Night," and "She's A Woman," both featuring ace McCoy solos. The guitar nearly sings the lyrics of "And I Love Her," and "If I Fell," catching the wistfulness and melancholy in Paul McCartney's melodies. "Things We Said Today" slows down one of McCartney's prettiest melodies and allows Atkins to cherish its opening verses. Only "Michelle," with its easy-listening string background, falls flat. (Atkins disciple George Harrison is not represented in the song set, but wrote the terse liner notes. You wonder what this band might have done with the C&W-flavored "Help" songs released the previous year.)

So with such an influential album and superb remastering, why did RCA/BMG cheap out on the packaging? No extra tracks (the set comes in at 30:47), no new liner notes, session information, or new photos; just a repeated photo of Atkins wearing a silly Beatle wig and holding a telephone. (Alfred Hitchcock wore the wig better on TV, but he was behind a drum set and had the accent down better.) Nonetheless, "Chet Atkins Picks On The Beatles" is a first-class session, worthy of a sequel, and is recommended for fans of the artist, subject, or guitar playing in general.

Some of the arrangements have a choir singing with the orchestra. I was looking for instrmental backround music to play for patients having procedures done. Some of the songs were great for this, especially from the Beatles and Abba CDs. Many songs have too much volume variations (big crecendos) for my use.

A Different Look at Beatles Music.......2005-12-22

In the World Beat area, we are presented with traditional flamenco guitarist Eric Hansen doing not so traditional interpretations of classic Beatles tunes.

At first it may not appear that Flamenco can blend with the Beatles, but Mr. Hansen picks some of the best guitar pieces the Beatles had to offer and expertly weaves acoustic guitar in the flamenco style with some of their best loved melodies.

This is traditional Flamenco style guitar playing. Mr. Hansen is well versed in this style, having worked with this classic Spanish style of guitar since the early 90s. He executes this flawlessly, yet brings in his own styling, adding elements of classic rock or a touch a jazz and allowing the styles to blend and speak together. The intricate fingering of notes does not detract in any way from the music, but rather enhances the works, giving the listener something new to listen to rather than a tired performance of the same works again. This gives many of the songs a new life and provides new interest for the listener.

And excellent choice for the opening track that gives the listener the very best combination of both styles is Michelle. This piece was made for acoustic guitar and Mr. Hansen expertly weaves the flamenco style into this piece.

Mr. Hansen successfully interprets such pieces as Strawberry Fields Forever and Fool on the Hill, which lent them to the very intricate style of flamenco very nicely. She's Leaving Home came across surprisingly well, and is an outstanding interpretation on this collection.

Across the Universe was also a real pleaser, as well as Here, There and Everywhere, which is another outstanding track of Mr. Hansen's work.

I enjoyed this very different look at the Beatles, through the eyes of a Flamenco guitarist. I was skeptical at first, but Mr. Hansen shows how easily the forms can be blended. There is a touch of ambience to the work, and it allows the two forms to peacefully co-exist and gives us a very likable and enjoyable performance. I feel the style gave new interest to the works.

If you are a fan of the Beatles, you will love this new look at their music. And those who like contemporary Flamenco guitar will find this very different, but also very agreeable. mafoster

Chilled-Out Beatles Tunes.......2003-08-27

New Age Beatles covers? Yes, I was fairly skeptical myself but curiosity overtook my skepticism and I ordered it anyhow.

I must say, this is a really good album. It assembles a fine group of New Age artists, including Michael Hedges, George Winston and Liz Story. And, the result is masterful.

A few of the songs are basically in their original format, just played as piano solos (Martha My Dear, Here There and Everywhere, and The Long and Winding Road.) If you are a fan of piano, which I am, you will enjoy them.

While many of the songs have the same arrangement as their originals, one (Here Comes The Sun) was very different. While its arrangement is interesting, it was a little too sedate for my taste.

My favorite track is 'Eleanor Rigby.' The guitar work on this song will just about bring you to tears--at least it does for me.

The only thing I didn't like about this album was the inclusion of vocals on 'I Will' and 'Blackbird.' It's not that the vocals were terrible or anything like that. It's a personal preference issue and my personal preference would have been for this to be a purely instrumental album.

Overall, though, I would say this is a wise purchase. If you are a fan of New Age music and you also happened to enjoy Beatles music, BUY THIS ALBUM because you will LOVE it. If you like the Beatles but aren't a huge fan of New Age, this album might convert you into a New Age fan.

There should be a law against anyone with a name like "SNUFFY" covering a Beatles song!Hell, there outta be a law against anyone even having the name "SNUFFY"! This entire album sounds worse that a poodle caught in a garbage disposal.I guess things could be worse though....could you imagine "LUCY IN THE SKY" redone by Pearl Jam.....has anyone seen my poodle?

this is by far the best selection of Beatles covers i have ever heard, and as a disc jockey i have heard more than my share. i am buying it as a Christmas gift for 3 of my friends, and got a copy for myself too. these songs are really well done and the whole album fits together nicely, even tho all the artists are different. enjoy.

I could listen to this again and again, and I have. It's definitely the better instrumental Beatles CD of the two that I purchased. It's our go-to bedtime CD. We are huge Beatles fans and this gives our little guy an introduction to the Fab Four.

Essential Lullaby CD.......2007-01-10

There is nothing cuter than a 3 year old singing "Jack-a-Roo." (Across the Universe). I got this CD for my sleepless newborn son. After three years of regular play, it is so good that I am buying it again as a replacement. (we accidentally broke the original). There is no singing, which is nice at bedtime, but you can sing along if you want (the words are printed in the insert if you forget). We sang these to our son, and he now excitedly recognizes the Beatles when they come on the radio and sings along. So much better than some of the annoying stuff that's out there for kids.

this is a wonderful gift to give someone on the arrival of a baby. You can even get a blue or pink case for the baby's sex. Jason Falkner does a wonderful job playing Beatles songs in child-friendly tones. Since he was a month old, my 6 month old son listens to this every night while falling asleep. This CD would also be great to play as background music for a dinner party or whatever! Not too childish like Baby Eisnstein music is.

Mr. Falkner walks a fine line transforming classic Beatles songs into children's lullabies. What is more amazing is that the transformation actually works and works well.For those Beatle-eletists who think that any remake of the bands work is blasphemy,I say to thee listen carefully before passing judgement.
When I originally purchased this for my daughter,I did so because I did not want just any old lullaby music for her to fall asleep to.You must first look at each song as a lullaby first,Beatles classic second. Each song was done with the utmost care and respect for the original piece. I being a music lover love this disc as much as it calms my daughter for night time slumber. It it very easy to catch yourself humming or singing along with these instumentals. It wins in both categories as lullaby and soft,elegant instumental cover. Difinately a win-win situation for me, it something nice and familiar for me to listen and as well as good songs I would like my daughter to be introduced to and familiar with in such material masquraded here as lullaby songs.

Mediocre, but not without merits.......2006-10-11

I was interested in this album because as a violinist, the richness of a full orchestra playing music is almost always preferable to a handful of musicians. Being a fan of the Beatles, I was intrigued by the concept of hearing some of their music orchestrated. After browsing the available options at Amazon, I decided to opt for this collection as it seemed the most comprehensive, and the price wasn't too bad either.

What I got wasn't all that I had expected or hoped it would be, but it would be misleading to say that this album is a waste. The orchestra isn't the best, and some of the arrangements are--well, lackluster. The most disappointing aspect to me is that the majority of the songs are still accompanied by an electric bass line. This screams to me of laziness and lends many of the tracks this flaw is found in a certain level of cheesiness that gets on one's nerves. That said, many of the versions of their earlier compositions--pre-Rubber Soul--give the songs an added weight and texture that they did not possess originally; these are the most pleasing to my ear.

As much as you get out of the 3 discs, there are a few tracks that, to my disappointment, were not included in this album, "Norwegian Wood" being one of them. Luckily, I found the album "Beatles for Strings" on Amazon by the same orchestra. Unluckily, being by the same group, the songs are of no higher quality than those found on this set.

I have some reservations about recommending this item. It does have several well-done tracks. However, there is a level of "cheese" found on much of this set that the Beatles' originals never had, and that is a definite negative. Furthermore, the omission of several of the pieces that would seem to be best suited to such an orchestral treatment from this set--while they can be found elsewhere--is another flaw, requiring you to pay more.

This is the most comprehensive of the orchestrated compilations, but it has a few major issues.

this is the music of the beatles played by some symphony no-one's ever heard of, pretty ho hum, not bad but not good. if you have a desire to hear the songs of the beatles symphonically you might as well pick this up, its not a bad price for a 3 cd set

Music of the Beatles performed by the King's Singers and Erich Kunzel with the Ciccinnati Pops Orchestra it's one of the best cover of the Beatles performed by classical musicians as them are. Thank you for the best product you have of this kind or genre.Music of the Beatles

A lesson learned.......2002-10-04

I like the music of the Beatles. I also like full orchestral performances of music. I like the quality of Telarc recordings. I like many performances by Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, although they have a predictable tendency to get overly gimmicky. I bought this CD off the store rack using that logic. Also, I had the balance of a freebie gift card in my pocket, just yearning to be spent. I had hopes of popping this CD in my player and hearing something on the caliber of Moody Blues (Days of Future Passed) or Renaissance (Scheherazade). The moment the King'Singers chimed in with their barbershop-quartet style vocals, I knew this CD was destined for my "never will play this again" bin. Without their vocals, it might have fared better. I regretted the purchase, but was able to resell it to someone who had different musical tastes than I. I've had a few instances where I was pleasantly surprised with the purchase of a CD on a hunch, but I will try to avoid this kind of buy-it-blind purchase again.
