5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2002-10-24

Erich kunzel has recorded a wonderfully exhilerating item this time! Wonderfully exhuberant is mild compared to the lively playing Kunzel always gets from this great orchestra! Arrangements are mostly by Tommy Newsome who knows how to write charts of varying degrees of excellence, particularly the winsome "Girl from Ipanema" which compliments the lyrics endless reflections on a beautiful, bikini-clad young woman. "Sweet and Gentle" is a saucy number while Eric Knight, the only arranger to get the Boston Pops under Fiedler to swing to new heights, contributes an unforgettably boisterous account of "Lambada." The sound is full of punch and contrast. And Doc Severinsen plays in "Virgen" a marvelous soloistic stratospheric account. My advice is to buy this immediately. It's one hot album!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful arrangements of music from all over the world........2001-10-26

Telarc and Eric Kunzel never fail to amaze at the quality of their selections.

Even tough some of the arrangements here have a little too much
fanfare at the start they are still great to listen to.

Most of these melodies you have heard them at least once in you life. And they are reproduced here with the Kunzel magic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection of Music.......2001-10-26

A Beautiful collection of music from all over the world.
(latin world that is)

I little grandiose on some selections (that's kunzel) but GREAT nonetheless.

One of my favorite instruments to listen to is the classical guitar. I currently have all of Terry Muska's CDs in my collection. These CDs are relaxing and inspiring and I often listen to them when I am drawing or webdesigning.

Beautiful work, Terry!

Having grown up in Mexico these are the songs I remember played the way I remember them. If you like it straight without unnecessary embellishment by the artists in a clean recording I would get this album in a heartbeat or drumbeat as the case may be. There are a couple of famous sons missing but they cover 80% which is more than most. I am not an audiophile but if you just want to listen to some good mariachi and recognize some songs go for it.

    4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

    2 out of 5 stars Fairly Mediocre!.......2004-02-27

A couple of years ago I bought a Ramon Vargas CD in Tijuana that was just magnificent. It what was a live recital performed in Guanajuato for a Cerventino Literature Fair and I was very happy with his renditions of Italian baroque arias and turn of the century Mexican danzas. However, he is simply not made for ranchereas. His voice is montonous - like Placido Domingo, he only knows how to sing "open" with lots of vibrato - and lacks any rhythym or pizzaz whatsover. Further, with the proliferation of quality Mexican tenors (Fernando de la Mora, Alberto Angel, Humberto Craviotto, Valente Pastor ...) he is going to have to do a lot better than this to earn my dollar. In fact, I am not exaggerating when I say that even the boys from Mariachi Vargas, Mariachi Cobre or Los Camperos sing these songs better than Ramon. Don't waste your money purchase the original renditions with Jorge Negrete & Pedro Vargas or recent renditions by the tenors I have mentioned.

3 out of 5 stars REVIEW part 2.......2002-10-23

I already reviewed this album. I come back now to re-review it. I have now placed Ramon Vargas among my most favorite voice to hear right after my other favorite: Pedro Infante. Before I knocked a few stars for the song selection. But I must say that it's good to hear those songs on his voice. Again, I wished Marquez would not have used his Danzon arrangement on Besame Mucho. Also Ramon Vargas voice overshadows the orchestra. I would of liked him working with arrangers like Ruben Fuentes, Eduardo Maguellanes, or the like. I give it 3 stars because the voice does not match the arrangements or the orchestra. His voice is too much for the background music that it may annoy some people. But please do buy this cd!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Mexico--Precioso!.......2002-04-05

Beautiful rendition of Mexican standards, glorious voice. As far as I'm concerned, you can't top Placido Domingo in this arena, but Ramon Vargos comes pretty close! I really appreciate the detailed liner notes with Spanish lyrics and English translation. I agree with the reviewer who complained about "El Reloj." There must be 1,000 versions of this. A shame, when there are so many beautiful boleros that have been forgotten. Despite that, there are many wonderful songs on this album, and a great range of styles -- rancheras, huapangos, boleros, waltzes, etc. I never get tired of hearing classics like "Besame mucho" and "Maria Elena."

5 out of 5 stars The Mexican Wonder.......2001-07-20

Yes, he is the Mexican wonder. This recording of Mexican songs by Vargas is simply the best effort put out by any other singer, including my personal favorite Domingo. The songs are all arranged very thoughtfully, and Vargas shows why hw is one of the most exciting tenors of the day. His B natural in Maria elena shines, and his Granada is unbeatable. This cd is gorgeous all the way through. Vargs show his romantic side in Sabor a Me, and displays his talent at singing the piannissimo notes. I highly recommend thid cd.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Voice.......2000-11-28

This cd is an excellent cd to hear classic songs the way they should interpreted. The downside to this cd is that it contains the usual song list that just about everyone(Luis Miguel, Domingo, etc) includes on their albums. The musical arrangement is good. On Besame Mucho by Conzuelo Velazquez the musical arrangment is done by Arturo Marquez. I guess because he thinks his danzones did not get great attention he used danzon 4's musical arangement and applied it to Besame Mucho. In my opinion he shouldn't have done that. Danzon #4 is that piece itself and Besame Mucho another one. On Malagueña Vargas takes the falsetto part to about 12 seconds and it seemed he could hold that note for another 20. La Malagueña on this cd is not, as Amazon.com specifies, Lecuona's but rather the one that Miguel Aceves Mejia made popular("que bonitos ojos tienes..."). The cd is good but how many times are we going to hear Roberto Cantoral's 'Reloj'?? Minus one star because of the song selection. This cd is better than Placido's Domingo's mariachi album though.

Negrete had a voice that border between the lyric tenor and the best voice of a ranchera style singer. It is very difficult to imitate. He had a special voice, and neither of tenors nor singers have could equalize up to date.
I sing in karaokes and always try to imitate him but I need a very effort. By the applauses I think I am very close.
Sing like Negrete is my goal.
Negrete is the best spanish singer until now. He is unique.
