5 out of 5 stars 5 star CD.......2006-10-06

I am a huge John Denver fan. I have over thirty of his CDs and Farewell Andromeda is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Angel from Montgomery.......2006-08-24

Here's my guilty pleasure. I think "Angel from Montgomery" is the single best track JD recorded. I recall at the time of the album's original release, after a steady diet of sunshine and country roads, this track popped out of my stereo and left me thinking, 'where the hell did this come from?' It's a revelation, song and singer, that still knocks me out.

4 out of 5 stars A neo-western classic!.......2005-06-25

The spirit of the wild West lives on, in this compelling package of modern cowboy songs. I was immediately drawn into the scene, as the opening chords of "I'd Rather Be A Cowboy" stepped boldly from my speakers. I've always thought this song deserved more attention and airplay than it got when it was released. "River Of Love" and "Whiskey Basin Blues" are perfectly executed, stereotypical western songs about love gone cold. John's love of nature appears once again in top form, on the georgeous "Rocky Mountain Suite (Cold Nights In Canada)". The innocence of childhood is beautifully woven into "Zachary & Jennifer", a wistful ballad sung to John's unborn children, with an oboe and a recorder dancing elegantly together at the end. "Sweet Misery" is a tongue-in-cheek blues number that greets the hard knocks of life with hopeful determination.

However, not every tune here resonates with me. There are a couple of "skippers", as I call them. "Berkely Woman" is a skirt-chaser's anthem, featuring the lines, "A woman is the sweetest fruit that God ever put on the vine / I'd no more love just one kind of woman than drink only one kind of wine." Rather insulting to monogamous couples everywhere. "Angels From Montgomery", penned by Bonnie Rait, just sounds dull and ordinary to me. Having said that, I hasten to add that I strongly recommend this album. After all. two skippers and nine keepers is pretty good! This record is a great companion for a road trip or camping.

5 out of 5 stars This One Is Truly Terrific!.......2004-09-03

This album was released when John was at the apex of his popularity, and the songs on this album served to continue his ride into the stratosphere. From the wry and yet poignant "I'd Rather Be A Cowboy" to the incredible smash hit "Farewell Andromeda", John Denver showcases his incredible talents here. Denver was instrumental in firmly fixing the younger generation's sights and sensibilities upon the outdoors in general and on environmental issues in particular, and he nearly single-handedly began the outdoor backpacking, hiking, and orienteering movements after popularizing the idea of a more close and intimate human relationship with mother nature. Therefore, more than a few of the young baby-boomers, like John, were more than ready for the kind of unconventional intimacy with nature he sang about so effortlessly and so elegantly. From "Zachary And Jennifer" to an evocative and almost ethereal "Rocky Mountain Suite'", Denver's songs soar in their description of the beauties of a simple and natural life and in being close to the "great wide-open'.

Denver also does an unusually good rendition of "Berkeley Woman", written by a friend but usually identified with Denver himself. He shows that even a sugary sweetheart like him can have some "colorful" thoughts about women. Indeed, the simple and well arranged acoustic blast of infectious energy and sweet simplicity that was John Denver is here in spades, whether it be in original songs like "Sweet Misery" or with covers of others' work, the kid who had adopted the majesty of Colorado for his setting and his inspiration sings simply, sentimentally, and superbly about the simple pleasures and undying verities of a homespun and simple life well lived. My special favorites here are "Berkeley Woman" and "I'd Rather be A Cowboy", and I always wondered why they weren't bigger hits for John. Hearing John sing in his youthful enthusiasm about what turns him on is still a rare treat. As with many of his albums, the message outlives the messenger. It has successfully weathered all the seasons since with its energy and beauty intact. I love this album, and I think you will too. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven but worthy.......2004-02-06

Farewell Andromeda shows some of John Denver's stregnths as well as his weaknesses. The title track along with Cold Nights in Canada and Lady's Chains highlight his well-known adoration of the natural world, love of life and are typical of his best work. Berekely Woman and Angel From Montgomery are very listenable tracks. On the other hand, the "Christmas" song and "River of Love" are mauldin, almost satirical parodies of country music ballads. The good tracks shouldn't be missed. Perhaps just skip over the others.

5 out of 5 stars Andromeda - 'Definitive Collection' (Angel Air) 2-CD import.......2004-11-20

Two discs,a total of 34 songs that showcase John DuCann's band just prior to joining up with Atomic Rooster.Honestly, some of these UK imports make certain U.S. releases look like a joke.Angel Air's packaging convinces you,the purchaser that you're getting something special, and you are.The best tracks on disc one are "The Day Of The Change",the rocking "Turns To Dust","The Reason","I Can't Stop The Song","When To Stop" and the irresistible "Let's All Watch The Sky Fall Down"(possibly the best cut of this entire compilation).Disc two is just as good,if not better. With tunes like another version of "The Reason","Keep Out 'Cos I'm Dying",the sinister-like sounding "Lonely Streets",the wailing "Sleep Like A Child" and a couple of semi-rough recorded live tracks,"Round House Blues" along with "Acidus".'Definitive...' is one of the better comp. CD's I've heard in sometime.I don't think I'm making an overstatement when I say that DuCann is quite a talented songwriter as well as performer.A true slice of psychedelic heaven with plenty of brilliant guitar work.Includes nifty twelve-page booklet where DuCann speaks of touring with Zeppelin and Sabbath back in the days long gone. Most highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars an underrated gem in the history of '60's rock.......2002-06-02

Although this band only recorded one album (issued here with outakes, live tracks, and singles on 2 discs), this is definitely no one-hit wonder. It's remarkable how creative the songs are on this album and how modern and fresh many of them sound considering it was recorded in 1969. Andromeda is by far one of the best hard-blues rock/psychedelic bands I've ever heard and believe me I've heard a lot. Although they have a tendency to jam and go over the top at times (and the couple of live tracks on cd2 don't sound that great), most of the songs are excellent and better than most of Cream's work with which they are often compared. From ballads to hard blues, this is definitely a collection worth buying for anyone who appreciates good, pre-'70's hard rock.

Album Description

Extension Of The Wish is the debut release from this Swedish progressive metal outfit who are just as likely to appeal to fans of Dream Theatre as they are to attract followers of younger acts like Meshuggah. Andromeda features the young, guitar virtuoso Johan Reinholtz and ex-Darkane vocalist Lawrence Mackrory. 7 tracks. 2001 release.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Holds up to repeated listenings..........2006-08-27

I liked this more than I thought I would. I was very happy with the balance of prog and heavy sounds. These guys can really play, and it shows. It's very song oriented though, and that's a good thing because the songs are good. The vocals are unobjectionable (well, that means good considering they're from Sweden). I thought the guitar would be a bit better, it's good on average; kind of Uli Jon Roth 'light'. Johan is very talented & I hope to hear him develop more in the future into the monster that some of this material hints at...he's just not there yet in my opinion. This is still better than most prog currently out there, and not boring or tedious as so much of it ends up being.

4 out of 5 stars Progressive Alternative?.......2006-08-16

Regarding the vocalist, I didn't like most of it too much but thanks for the variety, the vocals really stood out and I can't get them out of my head... no matter what I do... thanks.

This album is one of the best that I ever took a chance on. It has many elements that you wish some new DT albums had to them. They jam well; kind of in the style of 'Images and Words' or 'Awake'. I'm noticing also a lack of the usual "vocal hook" in the songs that make them memorable. THis is mostly due to the vocalist style or maybe just me not repetatively listening to it. Anyway, you know you'll never forget "...will never be heard from again..." (Dream Theater) or "...triumphant champion of Ithica..." (Symphony X) or any chorus sung by Lance King in any Balance of Power album. The vocals on 'The Perfect Element I' (Pain of Salvation) are what draws you into the musical theme and the heart and soul of the album. This is not the case with 'Extension' though. The vocals do have a defining moment to them in the title track but was more of a letdown to me at first because they have that moody "alternative" feel to them and not the high soaring metal power that I've gotten used to from bands offering the same music style. It reminded me alot of "Disconnected" by Fates Warning, or that low non-aggressive singing on some of Tourniquet's "Crawl to China" - good music but just missing that power punch.

Track 1 punches you in the face with it's odd meter and its guitar lickiness. This is good prog...my second favorite track.
Track 2 This has alot of DT type songwriting and arrangement, I love this song. The guitar solo is admirable and aggressive too!
Track 3 has some really heavy parts, maybe downtuned. This band really likes to count to seven. He really sonds like some alternative grunge guy with his bangs covering his eyes here - The Cure with a more manly band backing him up.
Track 4 is the best. It's their instrumental(!). It's got some truly dirty pentatonic blues riffage that makes me want to listen over and over...Very funky! It's kind of a twisted version of "Frankenstien" for us prog addicts. The only thing missing is the crybaby wah pedal guitar solo.
Track 5 starts off very explosive and has some very good vocal action in it. The chorus has some seriously Rob Zombie sounding "I'm more evil than you" stuff in it too. I really like the singing during the break. It's an all around pentatonic hardcore sounding song with that added demention of a keyboard/synth.
Track 6 is the longest track and it's the title track. It's also where the singer starts sounding alot like the dude form Social Distortion. I say this is the low point of the album, but it's also the only part I hum to myself all day long. It kind of shows the catch-22 duality of stuff you think you don't like. It's catchy because it's so odd and out of place and it's not what you would have wanted to hear. The main progression with vocals sounds like a teenage grunge band made it up... but this is surrounded by some excellent musicianship nonetheless so I got over it.
Track 7 This is a pretty good tune too. The singer turns into Geoff Tate in "Silent Lucidity" for the verses and becomes more alternative again everywhere else.

One good thing could come of this whole alternative/grunge style of singing. It could be an opportunity to get your Alternative/grunge music loving friend converted to a form of music that isn't centered around depression, anger, victim mentalities, self pity, drugs, drunkeness and useless conflict all the time. He/she may become interested in bands that actually can play instruments and read books. Spread the news.

4 out of 5 stars A good debut album.......2006-08-07

Andromeda's debut, "Extension of the Wish" is a fine album featuring a blend of progressive, metal and hard rock. The album has a studio singer sitting in, somewhat unusual but with good quality.

Guitarist, Johan Reinholtz is at times showy but is in John Petrucci-land in terms of technique and for the most part, tone, but most important, in his ability to switch geers and know when to play melodic rather than full bore solo mode. I am not by the CD but the keyboards are played with similar qualities to guitar. These two should stick together forever as they have a great sense of filling musical spaces and working exceptionally well with one another.

Reinholtz could do well spending a bit more time programming his effects as many were cheesy presets. It's like having a wonderful meal with a course of Spam, the effects aren't often necessary and take away from his skillful playing.

In terms of songwriting, I'm happy to say it is nicely innovative although to make a complete album with songs that start and end near perfectly made me a bit annoyed with the fade-out ending, of all things, on the closing song, "Arch Angel".
There are some other very small issues which keep the CD from getting 5 stars out of me, but I'd recommend this album to anyone that enjoys their progressive heavy or their metal on the progressive side.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-05-23

The music on the CD is perfect. Excellent guitar, drums and keyboard.

The only thing that keeps this CD from getting a 5 star rating is the singer. Some of his singing becomes almost unbearable, its not in tune with the music at all, and his voice is just plain annoying. If you've heard Spiral Architect and didn't like their singers voice, you probably won't like this guys voice.

Other than that, Amazing CD!

5 out of 5 stars Prog metal from Sweden that really shreds!.......2006-04-22

Wow, quite simply, wow! Guitarist Johan Reinholdz can burn up the fret board with the best of them. His pyrotechnics are impressive to say the least. The guitar sound is part classic rock, part neo-classical-metal. His riffing and solos never sound forced or inappropriate to the music, they fit rather nicely. The rest of the band is very tight and they fit together exceptionally well. There are quite a bit of great guitar / keyboard interplays. They are also quite heavy and do have some similarities to Dream Theater. Thankfully they have enough of their own style as not to sound like a derivative or copy. In fact, if you liked DT's Train of Thought kind of heavy, then this is your band. They are more proggy than DT was on that album, which is a good thing. For a debut album, this is extremely impressive stuff. It's one of a very few prog-metal debut albums in the last 15 years that hit the ground running, never missing a step. I highly recommend this one to people that really like the prog- metal on the heavy side without forgetting its prog sensibilities.

3 out of 5 stars Where has the Paddy we know and love gone? I think I know..........2006-09-26

I agree with other fans (they have to be fans in order to seek this hard to find work out - especially in the U.S.) that this is at the very least a step sideways, if not backwards, for Mr. McAloon and the Sprouts. But there is hope - I believe the spirit of our friend has been channeled by none other than - SCRITTI POLITTI! I am not even sure if I a spelling that right, but this band (which is really German expatriate Green Gartside) is sounding eerily like I imagined Prefab Sprout would on his newest album White Bread Black Beer. There are moments I swear I hear Paddy's vocals affectionately addressing American culture with wit and flair.

I highly recommend this album to anyone who misses the best of Prefab, and who is equally frustrated by their most recent output

4 out of 5 stars Good songs, so-so production.......2003-08-23

I think most of the songwriting on this album is on par with their (or really his) earlier albums. The production is rather glossy in a From Langley Park kind of way and that is alright with me. The real problem is that most instruments (perhaps even all) comes from samplers and such in Paddy's home studio. You can here when guitars, strings and drums are programmed rather than played and I feel that the album would had been a lot better if recorded with musicians. If you don't listen too close to the sounds, it's still very good music.

2 out of 5 stars Hmmmmm..........2002-05-23

This is a tough one. We Prefab Sprout fans had to wait 6 painful, lonely, long years before we got to hear the follow-up to their brilliant "Jordan: the Comeback". "Jordan" took us out of the 80s, capping off a string of amazing albums that represented a total embarrassment of the riches for Prefab. "Swoon", "Steve McQueen", "Protest Songs", the comparably weak but still good "Langley Park", and "Jordan" were all thoroughly brilliant, highly melodic, mesmerizing collections of soul/jazz inspired new wave-pop. Each album bursts at the seams with infectious, gossamer, heartfelt pop gems, and it seemed as if songwriter/vocalist Paddy McCloon could do no wrong. Each album seemed impossible to top, but he succeeded in at least maintaining a highly consistent sense of quality throughout. But, after Jordan, we were suddenly left with 6 years of dead silence.

I think many of us suspected, or at least hoped, that Paddy was using all this time to create his masterpiece. The album that would actually surpass the already unsurpassable genuis established on preceding efforts. But then some of us lost hope; assumed he'd thrown in the towel, or feared the band had unceremoniously vanished into the same obscurity other likeminded 80s bands suffered. But seemingly out of nowhere, Paddy came out with this, an album that scarcely resembles Prefab's past work.

My feelings on this one are bittersweet. Interestingly, the production and overall feel of "Andromeda Heights" sound as if Paddy was completely oblivious to mid to late 90s recording trends in the independent world. Not that that's a bad thing at all, but it's kind of new for Prefab. You see, the only thing that ever hurt Prefab's 80s stuff was some of the unforgiveably 80s production flourishes, which dates the stuff a bit, but the sounds did reflect the times. But, whereas mid-90s contemporaries like the High Llamas, Stereolab, and Aluminum Group were reaching back in time to analog synths, Farfisa organs, and Bacharach/Brian Wilson/70s AM radio horn/string sections, Paddy took a different, and altogether more VH-1 route with "Andromeda": this one suffers from an overwhelmingly slick, glossy production, and we're talking Elton John, Disney soundtrack slick. In short, this implies that Paddy is not even attempting to target the indie/college kids, but rather the kind of people who cried when they heard Elton John's "Candle in the Wind".

The arrangements often involve an orchestra with a lot of annoying X-Files sounding keyboards, and winds up feeling rather cinematic. The songs no longer have that snappy pep to 'em, that tension brewing right beneath the surface, (partly due to the replacement of Prefab drummer Neil Conti), and instead tend towards a very languid, spacey feel. Sometimes this works well, but over the course of the entire disc, it proves rather numbing.

The songs themselves are hit and miss. "Electric Guitars", "Four Horsemen", and "Weightless" are really the only songs to reflect Paddy's tried and true, spot-on knack for infectious, effortlessly brilliant, pop genius. Other songs, like "Steal Your Thunder", "Whoever you are", and "Prisoner of the Past" are okay, but really pale when compared to older classics like "Cruel" or "Looking for Atlantis". The rest of the album comes across rather dull and uninspired, as well as irreparably damaged by the gross, icky, sterile production.

Adding insult to injury, most of the lyrics are embarrassingly sappy, filled with god-awful, Hallmark, sentimental dross that would make any "Precious Moments" collecting simpleton feel warm and fuzzy. I'm sure this reflects Paddy's having settled down into middle-age and shedding his youthful angst, but settling down never got the better of Mark E. Smith or Cathal Coughlan! This is inexcusable! The only lyrics that even approach perversity are in "Ann Marie", about a guy who's obsessed with a female friend who's getting married to another man.

I don't know... If you're a hardcore Prefab diehard like myself, you'll find a few songs on here that make it worth keeping. But, it's truly disapointing to hear Paddy lose the edge that made his work in the 80s stand so far ahead of the pack. With "Andromeda Heights", he's apparently shifted his target audience to bored, middle-aged, suburban housewives, and it's making me feel kind of alienated. Someone, please help! It's only appropriate to mention Cathal Coughlan's mantra of "keep music DANGEROUS!".

4 out of 5 stars There is only one Prefab ..........2001-06-15

4 days before the release of their next album, I am hooked on this album - one friend reminded me of how good this band was and is.

Steve McQueen and Jordan are 2 superb CDs and this, more tranqil, album is excellent for those of us growing older and getting into more jazz based music!

Let's keep our fingers crossed for the next one...

5 out of 5 stars Not Jordan: The Comeback, but what is?.......2000-12-13

Perhaps the only thing this CD has going against it is that it will always be compared the the Sprouts preceding album, Jordan: The Comeback. That album stands as one of the greatest pop music recordings of all time. Andromeda Heights is merely a wonderful disc.

The mood here is mellow. The use of saxes could almost qualify some songs for play on smooth jazz radio stations. However, we still have the wonderful wordplay and vocals of Paddy McAloon. On previous releases, Paddy's lyrical themes would include everything from love to the plight of refugees to the meaning of life to...What is Green Isaac? Here the theme is LOVE. So, while there is less breadth in his scope, he mines the theme of love with incredible depth.

Musically, this disc is less adventurous than other Sprout releases. However, I have listened to Andromeda Heights more than 100 times and it still brings joy and revelations.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for progressive rock fans!.......2006-10-07

I have noticed this album has gotten quite a few poor reviews and quite frankly I'm dumbfounded! However, I will say that I heard II=I and have still not listened to Extension of the wish simply because I love Fremberg's voice. It may throw you off at first, but he's got a superb voice. In fact, I frequently am unimpressed with vocalists in progressive metal bands. The title song Two is one really displays their diversity and dynamics. I grew to like this album more and more as I listened to it. It's certainly not for the faint of heart and contains dazzling displays of instrumentality. Expect not any 4/4 time signatures...well maybe a little. All in all, I think this is a wonderful album. Lejon displays tremendous chops and dynamics, with ghost notes and some double bass...but not too much. I give it 5 big ones!

3 out of 5 stars II = 3 stars.......2006-08-07

While the vocals on the previous Andromeda album were somewhat workman-like, the take a bit of a dive here on "II = I."
I'm sure many will disagree and I will attempt to explain why I'm disappointed. This time out, the vocals are very specific but in a styleized mannor that kept me away from most metal music. It is almost everywhere on the album, and where it isn't, the over articulated English vox make you think of Englebert Humperdink to power metal ballads, e.g.: "Two Is One."

In fact, much of the songwriting is a catalogue of metal cliches that again, always kept me away from metal. There are moments in several songs where the vocals are nearly interruped by the voice of Thor (or various overdubs of lead vocals and guitarist, "Johan Reinholdz's" vocal stylings.

Reinholdz's role is far more developed on this album and that will determine if you enjoy it. He now plays bass, guitar and additional vocals. The drummer and keyboardist are still in the band, thankfully.

In terms of songwriting, the content of "II = I" is more metal and considerably less progressive.
I personally can't get past the various metal cliches. I'd name the bands but honestly, I didn't pay much attention when I heard the originally unappealing ideas that show up on the album.
The mix on the album is inconsistant as well. Encyclopedia, which I mostly like, has a lot of clutter in the lower mids, which is a shame as there's some great sounding synth work that gets lost.

A shining spot are the keyboards which have been given more room to work now that the riffs have been simplified.
The vocals...it will be each individual's call. Maybe people that like older metal will dig this. It's good quality singing, so I don't fault the performance. I just don't enjoy it nearly as much as on the first Andromeda album, "Extension of the Wish." I appreciate the band moving on, but unless it's at least to the level of "II = I" I won't be moving with it.

Songs I enjoyed:
Encyclopedia
Morphing Into Nothing
Castaway
Parasite

they had the kind of new sound that I found interesting and applaud the band for.

Songs that did little for me:

Mirages
Reaching Deep Within
Two Is One

although I don't mind Mirages but for the vocals, in an otherwise reasonable number.
"Reaching Deep Within" is the type of song that exemplifies what I do not enjoy about this album while "Two Is One" doesn't annoy me. It's just a bit fomulaic for my tastes and for a band of Andromeda's capability.

I hope Andromeda decides to stay more on the progressive road but can see them becoming more metal and more like an 00s' version of the 80s' hair metal that I grimace listening to.

I still think "II = I" is a reasonable album, but I would suggest "Extension of the Wish" if you want to hear Andromeda at it's best.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing album..........2006-03-19

Let me begin by saying how big of a fan I am of "Extension of the Wish" era Andromeda. Every song on that album, besides "Star Shooter Supreme," was brilliant. I had very high hopes for "II=I" but as I listened to the album, it became evident that the band has lost most of their trademark sound. The new singer has a good voice, but it doesn't fit the music well at all.
Most songs start off well, but rapidly disintegrate as the verses and choruses approach. By the middle of the song, I became so bored with the music I started fast forwarding to the passages in hopes of hearing something interesting. I had a very hard time listening to some of these songs, as they plod on and on with little to keep my attention.
One song, however, stands head and shoulders above the rest. "Morphing into Nothing" is a BRILLIANT song. One of the best prog metal instrumentals I've ever heard. If it wasn't for this song, I would have sold this album on ebay already. This song should have been on "Extension of the Wish," because amidst the songs on this album, it clearly doesn't belong.

If you are new to Andromeda, stay FAR away from this album. Pick up "Extension of the Wish" and I guarantee you will love it. Skip this one unless you find it on sale. It might be worth buying just for "Morphing into Nothing."

2 out of 5 stars This singer can NOT be the future of this band.......2005-06-17

David Fremberg is meant to be singing live on stage - the acting stage. It's a very emotional voice, able to contrive a whole range of feeling. Unfortunately, Fremberg is unable to display a range of *melody*. It's amazing how quickly these songs just die, because on any given track, David sings only 5 or 6 different notes. Songs stop becoming songs as soon as he enters - they morph into "displays".

And I don't know about you, but I just hated it, every quiver and rasp. II = I ends up sounding like a quirky off-Broadway soundtrack, rather than an experimental rock band. This isn't music, it's a musical.

If that's what you want for your band, Johan, more power to you. But if you wake up one morning and realize that Fremberg is the wrong guy for the job, you'll probably find more than one fan (and probably even fellow band member) that feels the same.

Till he's gone, I'm not buying any more CDs - I should have stopped at EOTW.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great........2005-04-05

I'm not quite sure what problem Andromeda had with how "Extension of the Wish" was put together, but something compelled them to change styles a bit with "II=I," and as far as I'm concerned, it's a step backward. I think that maybe the keyboardist took over more of the writing responsibilities, and I'm just not a fan of where he takes things. The vocals on this album are also weaker than those on "EotW."

"Encyclopedia" - Starts off in slightly heavier fashion than their last album; seems a bit more dissonant, too. Frequently displays much more of a straightforward metal feel. Not without complexity, but it feels as if the relative influences of progressive metal and more typical metal have been swapped from where they were on "EotW" - 8.0/10.
"Mirages" - Starts off with an interesting `jungle rhythm' figure, but moves into an uninspired guitar motive, with nothing especially redeeming in any of the instruments. Still a good song, just not as good as any from their last album - 7.5/10.
"Reaching Deep Within" - Some more interesting things happen here, especially in the drums. Has a cool instrumental section towards the end - 9.0/10.
"Two Is One" - I'm not one who demands that a song be heavy in order to be good; however, dwelling too long on blah acoustic themes isn't good. While not without interesting moments, especially again in the drums, this song just takes too long to actually get to the point. Once it does get there, there is some very nice playing and writing, but it still feels as though the band took about 5 minutes' worth of material and stretched it into 10 minutes - 8.5/10.
"Morphing into Nothing" - Smacks a bit more of `old' Andromeda, perhaps because the band feels free to be more creative when not constrained by the vocalist, or perhaps because, like all of "EotW," this song is written solely by Reinholdz. Either way, superb development of ideas - 10/10.
"Castaway" - This intro is an example of an acoustic section that succeeds. Beautiful, dynamic, and interesting, these are really an enjoyable few minutes of music - 9.5/10.
"Parasite" - Cool intro, decently polyrhythmic. Moves to some very cool areas, typified by wonderfully abstruse metric patterns. Never quite reaches perfection, though; maybe the lyrics are too contrived, I don't know - 9.5/10.
"One In My Head" - Melodically interesting beginning. Actually reminds me a good bit of Dream Theater, a connection which I don't usually make with Andromeda. This song is to "Parasite" as "This Dying Soul" is to "Glass Prison." After the intro, the vocalist gets a little annoying. Love the ending, though: among the coolest endings ever - 9.0/10.
"This Fragile Surface" - Incredibly powerful opening statement, grabs the listener very effectively. However, even though I understand that Hedin, who wrote the lyrics for each of the past three songs, was making a little trilogy, the idea is getting a bit stale. There are a lot of cool moments, though they are often detracted from a bit by the vocals - 9.0/10.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2007-05-03

If Vivaldi is primarily responsible for this music he should be proud, it's the most exciting recording of Vivaldi's (?) vocal music I've heard. The singers and orchestra do a great job bringing the score to life.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful perfection.......2006-05-24

Everything --- music, conductor, orchestra and soloists --- converge harmoniously to make this an exceptionally beautiful performance, to return to again and again. The naturalness, the effortlessness, and the joyfulness of this production are inescapable. Contrary to the dramatic subject matter, the most beautiful numbers have a golden, lambent quality ('Con dolce mormorio' in the Second Part) that made me think of the gentle murmur of bees among flowers. The singers are wonderfully selected for contrasting timbres, but all have consistent musicality. The leads, soprano Kermes and the counter tenor Cencic, are especially delightful in their duet. A pleasure in every way, regardless of who composed this music.

3 out of 5 stars Exaggerated hype hardly conceals the mediocrity of this once obscure serenata.......2006-03-20

The promotion of this set as a 'Venetian mystery' is more about generating hype than anything else. Most of the music here is, at best, mediocre and there's no mystery about that! No matter how much of it was written by Vivaldi or not, we should not forget that Vivaldi was capable of and guilty of mediocrity (as anyone determined to work through the entire Opus 111 Complete Vivadi edition will discover). Having said that, the singing here itself is rather good apart from one exception, that of Mark Tucker who sings the role of Daliso. His singing is crude and distinctly un-Italianate in a set otherwise very much Italian in flavour. This marred my enjoyment of the set and found me rushing for the skip button everytime his aria appeared. The playing time is not particularly generous (CD 1: 51'28, CD 2: 46'37) and could have easily accomodated a cantata or so. If you are passionate about baroque music, as I am, then most of this won't matter. However, don't be swayed by the hype. Most of it is marketing subtefuge.

5 out of 5 stars Una serenata arrolladora .......2005-04-21

Anna Bonitatibus y Mark Tucker.
sado.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Serenata by Vivaldi (?).......2005-01-20

Whether "Andromeda Liberata" is indeed a work of Vivaldi's is impossible to
confirm, but it is a remarkable piece of music. The overture is in the
French style, which is unusual for an Italian work, and there are many other
highly original touches throughout. The music is almost uniformly beautiful,
but ironically, the most convincing argument against this being a work of
Vivaldi's is the one aria that is indisputably his, Perseo's "Sovvente il
Sole". It is simply on a whole other level than anything else in the
Serenata, a hauntingly beautiful and emotional piece that left me stunned
when I first heard it at the Venice Baroque Orchestra's performance in New
York's Zankel Hall. It is worth the price of the CD.
-
The singers are all very fine, especially the soprano Katerina Beranova. The
New York performance also featured the mezzosoprano Marijana Mijanovic, who
is not on the recording. Let me just say that her very fine portayal of
Giulio Cesare on the Minkowski recording of that work did not prepare me for
the quality of her voice; some things just need to be heard live to be
believed. But even without her, this recording is highly recommended.

See my review for II=I for my Andromeda thoughts and notes. It will pretty much give you a good idea of my thoughts of any of the band's work.

This one just adds to the collection of fantastic work by the Swedish band. Original and inspired with fantastic song writing and musicianship.

Keep up the great work Andromeda!

Nice follow up to II=I. Although I don't know if this album surpasses II=I, they once again display amazing odd time signatures, while not losing any kick. This album is a little more straight forward (no instrumental rampages quite like II=I). Fremberg's voice is certainly one of a kind and he could easily be found in a production on Broadway. The drummer, Lejon, is once again obscuring the time signatures with offbeat chops and is superb.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-09-17

F'ing excellent! They outdid II=I which was great itself. Great drumming. If you like Symphony X, Dream Theater, etc.. GET THIS ALBUM (get II=I at the same time)! You won't be dissapointed.

Gene Eoddenberry's Andromeda is sirie and OST is the best and took that why is my favorite soundtrack from faverite scifi sirie

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2005-08-23

If you like TV/movie soundtracks, and Andromeda, you should like this. Good Andromeda music, also contains the two different opening themes. (Remember, it is a TV soundtrack so it contains synthesized music.) I enjoy listening to it, and can have it playing in the background at work too without it being bothersome.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack.......2005-02-01

The soundtrack to Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is one of the best sci-fi soundtracks to come out in quite a while. I found the music exciting, interesting and intriguing, and on several tracks simply exhilarating; composer Matthew McCauley really does take you on a musical roller-coaster, from the stately High Guard Theme to Dylan's theme to Trance's and Beka's themes to the Nietzschean Attack theme. McCauley musically explores each character, underscoring and enhancing their unique personality. The album has kind of a New Age-ish sound to it on several tracks which gives it a mysterious ethereal quality. A great score for a great series. Composer Matthew McCauley certainly knows his stuff. This is just great music whether or not you're a fan of the show!

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2003-08-08

Great presentation of soundtrack. Interesting instrumentals for even those who are not familiar with the show. I listen to it practically all the time!

5 out of 5 stars A great television score!.......2002-03-27

First off, this is a television soundtrack, not a movie soundtrack-- many of the "instruments" are synthesized. Okay, that aside, this is a great album! It's been a long time since I've heard so many different character themes on a tv soundtrack. From the Heroic "Dylan Hunt", to the brooding "Rev Bem and Magog" music, to the outright ominious "Neitzscheans" themes, this album is a winner. It's nice that the producers also included Alex Lifeson's "March of the High Guard" theme from season 1, which is regrettably no longer used on the show. The music on this album takes you on a emotional roller coaster-- from mysterious, to brooding, to heroic and back again. High recommended for fans of both scores and the television series alike!

5 out of 5 stars AVISO: DISTORSIONES DE SONIDO.......2006-11-10
