Since the Windham Hill imprint's Winter Solstice series was born in 1985, the concept has gone through some changes, bottoming out with 1999's abysmally kitschy Winter Solstice on Ice. With this Silver Anniversary Edition, Dawn Atkinson, who produced the first Winter Solstice disc, has gone back to her original concept of nontraditional seasonal music and novel arrangements of Christmas classics. She's also brought in some old standbys, soliciting works from Paul McCandless, Barbara Higbie, Will Ackerman, Philip Aaberg, and Liz Story.
Much of this new Winter Solstice turns on classical themes. Ex-Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud teams with guitarist Steve Erquiaga on an airy Handel piece, and McCandless adapts Orlando Gibbons's "The Silver Swan." Others explore traditional carols, including Erquiaga's double-guitar filigree on "Greensleeves." As with past titles in this series, the best compositions are usually the originals.
Keyboardist Tim Story, a Winter Solstice stalwart, unfolds another gorgeously melodic ambient chamber piece called "What Comes December." Tracy Silverman and Thea Suits turn in a wistful duet for electric violin and flute, and TV composer W.G. Snuffy Walden goes soft focus on "Moon Lake." While "Beneath the Trees," by Ackerman and Aaberg, seems born in the snow-covered trees of Ackerman's Vermont home, Hawaiian Ozzie Kotani's "Queen's Prayer" seems to have nothing to do with the season. Yet, it somehow fits the mood. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
This is how traditions begin.......2007-07-24
This disc is way, way up there among the best in the series - and this whole series is a "must have" in my book. Most of the songs in this series, and certainly in this disc, would not be considered traditional Christmas music. But for me, the season would lose much of it's charm without this playing in my home. Traditions become traditions because they are enjoyable, and if you give this series (and especially this volume) a chance, you won't regret it.
Lastly, the 30th anniversary of Windham Hill Winter's Solstice discs came and went in 2006. Too bad - a commemorative effort would have been most welcome.
Solstice goes back to its original style with maturity.......2007-01-04
This is one of the best "Solstice" albums. There is a maturity to the choices on this album which has been lost on the last two "solstice" albums. All are new selections by Liz Story, Philip AAberg. W.G. Snuffy Walden (West Wing theme) is also represented. All in all this is a very enjoyable offering. Highly recommended.
Seasonal mood music to surround yourself in.......2002-11-27
This CD and likewise this review is aimed at those who know Windham Hill and appreciate the music put out by the company. It seems logical to presume that if you're reading this review, you enjoy the music that embraces new age, world, smooth jazz and light classical genres.
Indeed, as others have pointed out, this is a new recording and has different material than the original Winter's Solstice. In fact, I'll admit that I was disappointed not to find "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" here.
Nevertheless, this is uplifting and inspiring music for the season. You'll find some traditional such as "Greensleeves", "Come All Ye Shepherds", "Down In Yon Forest", along with Handel's "Col Partir La Bella Clori", Orlando Gibbons' "The Silver Swan", and the notable "Queen's Prayer" by Hawaii's last queen, Queen Lili'uokalani.
But you'll also find the originals composed by some of the performers such as Richard Schonherz, Tracy Silverman, Jim Brickman, W.G. Snuffy Walden, Will Ackerman and Philip Aaberg, Liz Story, and Tim Story to be the equal if not sometimes better than ther older ones.
This is for those who can find a depth of sound and beauty in quiet and simple music, who can enjoy the depths of the instrumentation without thinking it bland, boring or repetitive.
Bravo Windham Hill!!.......2002-02-07
The Silver Anniversary Edition of "A Winter's Solstice" is grounded in the very roots of Windham Hill. The series was origionally started as an instrumental alternative to traditional Christmas music, with a focus more on the concept of the winter solstice. That's exactly what you get on this eighth recording of the series. Featuring different compostions from the origional (1985) "A Winter's Soltice," you will not be disappointed! Whether you're a long time fan of the series or just exploring some new music, this cd is full of beautiful instrumentals - i.e. solo piano, guitar, violin, cello, flute, oboe, harp, English horn, synthesizers and percussions. Some of my favorite songs - Shades of White by Jim Brickman, Handel's Col Partie la Bella Clori by Joan Jeanrenaud & Steve Erquiaga, Greensleeves by Steve Eruiaga, Moon Lake by W. G. Snuffy Walden, Beaneth the Trees by Will Ackerman & Philip Aaberg, and Down in Yon Forest by Jeff Johnson & Brian Dunning.
Is it Christmas music? Yes. Music for anytime, any season? Yes. Play it all year round! Really the only Christmas song, per say, is Greensleeves which was adapted to What Child Is This. I have most of the Winter Solstice cd's, but this is one of my favorites out of the entire series. Bravo to Windham Hill and Happy Anniversary! It's a perfect companion on cold, snowy winter days, especially since it is a celebration of winter itself. As I write this, it is snowing here. I am listening to this very cd and enjoying a cuppa hot tea. I am celebrating the beauty of winter God has blessed us with. Buy it. Pop it in your cd player and bask in the beauty of "A Winter's Solstice - Silver Anniversary Edition."
Beautiful Music for Any Season of the Year.......2001-12-27
When is a Christmas album NOT a Christmas album? When it's a Windham Hill "Winter Solstice" album. For their silver anniversary edition, Windham hill put together a collection of all new recordings. These are all instrumental and mostly original compositions. The only song you'll recognize with overtly holiday overtones is the opening track, the traditional "Greensleeves," whose tune was used for the hymn "What Child Is This."
These songs all have a haunting beauty to them and are very soothing and peaceful--the perfect kind of background music for the holiday season or any other time of the year.
Among my favorite tracks are the collaboration between William Ackerman and Philip Aaberg on "Beneath the Trees" and multi-instrumentalist Barbara Higbie's "Come All Ye Shepherds" where she alternates on hammered dulcimer, violin, piano and Celtic harp.
Overall, this is 52 minutes and 48 seconds of pure bliss. Enjoy. RECOMMENDED

Customer Reviews:
Excellent music that paints the movie along.......2007-01-31
I always got a kick out of Bruce Campbell because he was so unique in his style of performance and acting. Flawless and vibrant. This movie is no different for him as an actor. The idea for this movie is original and a first because it takes icons and puts them in a perspective that we never thought of before and it helps us relate to ourselves and the world around us in a snomewhat amusing but, in the end, a serious manner. I love the ending where "Elvis" is lying there and he knew he was going to die sadly enough. Then the background instrumental music played softly and you see the words: "All Is Well" show up in the sky with Egyptian characters. He then finishes as he is passing away by saying "Thank you. Thank you very....(fading) much..." And then the heart-felt and moving music plays that is very familiar and awesome. Excellent movie that is also very eye-opening as well as amusing. The comments about a person's body parts and some language can seem offensive if misunderstood but that is not what the movie was meant to be and not the intent. Sometimes we have to look past some things to understand how human and often lonely these characters are being portrayed and how they end up being a hero of which they really always wanted to be. Sound familiar?
Great soundtrack!.......2006-02-26
This disc is well worth the 24.00 at the Bubba-Hotep.com page. Very original music with memorable tracks that never get tiring to listen to. Good movie also.
(Makes me think of the girl i love)Absolutley amazing stuff by Brian Tyler........2005-09-20
This score effects me deeply because it always makes me think of the girl that i loved for the longest time. The Guitar is so extremly well done for this score and the fact that Brian Tyler playes it himself the whole time makes it all the more amazing. The atmosphere is what makes the whole cd so great, it always makes you fell like you are apart of it, which is truly somthing special. Anyone who love's amazing film music should pick this cd up as soon as possible.and enjoy it as much as i am.Best love songs ever. Ashley i love you with all my heart.
A soundtrack that means something!!!.......2005-02-23
Having seen the actual movie just recently I was taken back by the atmosphere of the film. The feeling of isolation, the twilight of life and what lies ahead. A major part of that experience was in fact the score by Brian Tyler. I rushed to my computer and ordered my copy of the soundtrack immediately following the movie. This is not just any motion picture score, it is in my opinion one of the most well written pieces of music ever to be written and it holds its ground next to the all time classics. 100% Americana. I myself am an avid collector of movie scores and Bubba Ho-Tep has already earned it's place as one of my all time favorites. This isn't just a great soundtrack for a great movie, this is a the soundtrack for the everyman. It's a journey of emotion. From the vibrant toe tapping yahoo of "The Kings Highway" to the bittersweet tear jerking "All is Well" this is one cd that needs to be in the collection of any serious collector.
Wonderful music made from real emotion.......2005-01-15
As a new film-composer Bryan Tyler has made a name for himself by scoring smaller scale movies before he got his big break with mainstream movies like Darkness Falls and Timeline (only after Jerry Goldsmith's score was rejected). Of all his scores so far, Bubba Ho-Tep is his absolute best.
Obviously you know the movie is about an old-age Elvis battling a mummy in a Texas retirement home. It's not so much a wacky Evil Dead comedy-horror as it is a metaphor for getting old. Tyler's gorgeous main theme reflects exactly that and is filled with regret, sadness and maybe even the slightest feeling of hope. Part of it's brilliance is that it works the way you interpret it.
I owned the CD long before I got the DVD of Bubba Ho-Tep and I must say the score stands well on it's own. It's one of those CDs you can put on no matter what mood you're in and it'll affect you in some way. Sometimes it'll bring you close to tears and at other it's utterly uplifting. How many modern film scores can do that?
An absolute MUST buy for fans of the film (how can you not be?) and essential for those of you who just, plain and simple, love good music.

Starflyer 59's "Silver" Re-Released!!!.......2005-06-29
It was 1994 when Jason Martin and Starflyer 59 burst onto the alternative music scene with their self-titled debut commonly referred to as "Silver" because of its stark silver cover. In the years following its release, "Silver" has become an underground classic and a favorite amongst fans of mood-driven alternative rock. Unfortunately, in recent years, the "Silver" album went out-of-print and was increasingly hard-to-find - that is, until now!!!
June of 2005 has seen a newly remastered and reissued edition of the "Silver" album. In addition to the proper album, the "Silver" deluxe edition also reissues the ultra-rare "She's The Queen" EP in its entirety as a bonus. The only downside to the deluxe edition is that the original artwork is not reproduced nor are there any additional liner notes. The stark-plain silver cover is also replaced by 'royal' looking artwork that looks almost like a parody of Queen's "A Night At The Opera".
All artwork gripes aside, it is truly the music that matters here and it's great to see Starflyer's classic "Silver" album available once again. For those who missed it the first time around, now's your chance. Additionally, there is the rare bonus EP tacked onto the end so, you get two rarities for the price of one on a single disc.
An Essential Starflyer Classic Revisited!!!

Where were you in '62........2002-06-15
Nostalgia, much as love, is subjective. For this reviewer, the peak time for pop-rock music was the period that started roughly when Elvis returned from the U. S. Army in 1960 and ended when the Beatles conquered America in 1964. Doo-Wop was dominant and folk-rock was stirring. A youthful cheerfulness and fresh enthusiasm was carried over into popular music. Maybe we were young and dumb, but we sure had fun. Then Oswald killed Kennedy, we watched our innocence crash in flames, and the music gradually changed. Instead of Doo-Wop and classic R&B, the later '60s music featured vapid lyrics, drug-induced rhythms, and limp-wristed hippie music. Pop music lost much of its light-hearted pep. Fizzle replaced pizzazz. Contrast Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion" (1962) with Spiral Staircase's "More Today Than Yesterday" (1969) and you get the idea.
This album includes good examples of the best period in pop-rock music. Shelley Fabares took time off from "The Donna Reed Show" long enough to sing "Johnny Angel." In 1961, The Tokens recorded one of the all-time great folk-rock songs, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," with the distinctive "Wimoweh" background chant. Dion's "Donna the Prima Donna" has a fine hand-clapping beat. Neil Sedaka sings No. 1 hit "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do." Ricky Nelson does "Travelin' Man" and Little Peggy Marsh makes feminists ill with "I Will Follow Him." WCBS FM101.1 is New York's Oldies station. This album is part of their 25th anniversary celebration. It includes brief comments on each song in the liner notes. Although late '60s music is also included, the good stuff dominates and carries this album. Repeat listening increases the enjoyment. ;-)
WCBS FM101.1 25th Anniversary The 60's.......2000-09-05
Wow, it's just like listening to the local oldies station. If you are in to oldies like I am, you must have this collection. These are the original recordings also!!! I just can't get over how real the music was then. It seems to be so contrived now. This collection is a perfect example of what music is like when it's not contrived. I get chills when I hear "A Lover's concerto" and theme from "A Summer Place". The music may not have the same effect on you, but I still highly recommend this CD. It is a must for any collection!!!

New York's Oldies Station Rocks On........2002-05-23
Nostalgia, much as love, is subjective. This collection is noteworthy for its eclectic selection. Most of the songs are from the vintage years 1956-1959. It includes three by Elvis. Oldie albums frequently ignore the King. It also presents rare masterpieces such as Ed Townsend's "For Your Love," The Impalas' "Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)," and "It's Only Make Believe" by Conway Twitty. Snuggle in as Johnny Ace sings "Pledging My Love," and Johnny Mathis offers "Chances Are." The Isley Brohters' "Shout (Parts 1&2)" rocks your CD player for almost 5 minutes. Drift off to sleep with Santo & Johnny's "Sleepwalk." WCBS FM 101.1 is New York's oldies station. The cover tells us that much. The liner notes include brief comments on each of the 25 songs. If you think that U-2 is a submarine, and that Britney Spears is famous only for Pepsi commercials, you are a perfect fit for this CD. Toe-tapping, finger snapping fun in the best tradition. Get your best girl, comb back your DA, and boogie on over to the drive-in. You're so hip you won't even eat a square meal! This is a superior sampling of nifty-fifties rock, R&B, and pop. Dig it. ;-)
Simply Astounding!.......2000-05-09
This collection is a nice introduction to the music of the 50's. It starts off with Elvis and really doesn't quit. Buddy Holly, The Platters, Everly Brothers, Isley Brothers, so many to choose from. My two favorites are "It's All In The Game" by Tommy Edwards and the original "Love Potion #9" by the Clovers. A great disc.

Marcos First Debut.......2003-03-01
This album is awesome! This is Marcos's first debut. All the songs on this album are good. Even the polka is good. I am really mad at myself for not buying it when it was around. This album is really hard to find. I have been looking for this album for almost 3 years. Nobody has it or carries it. If anybody has this album keep it. They only made a few copies of this album.
