5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Singer.......2007-07-21

Surely Darlene Koldenhoven has one of the most beautiful female voices in the world. The song selections, the accompanying music and the quality of recording are supurb.

5 out of 5 stars Calming beauty.......2007-05-28

Infinite Voice is one of my favorite albums to pop into the player after a long and difficult day at work. Its soothing lightly classical pieces with Koldenhoven's angelic vocals do much to sooth an agitated spirit and sing peace to the soul. Wonderful Darlene! We need more like this.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice.......2007-04-23

A classically trained vocalist with a Master's Degree in music from the Chicago Conservatory College, the golden voiced Darlene Koldenhoven has participated in a number of high profile pop culture products. In the 1980's she appeared on jazz composer Clare Fisher's Brazilian jazz vocal project, Freefall, which was awarded a Grammy in 1986 for Best Jazz Vocal Performance by a Group. In the 90's she appeared in and served as choir director for both Sister Act films, and in 1994 sung with Yanni Live at the Acropolis, a concert film reportedly seen by nearly 500 million people worldwide. She has also sung on recordings with Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart, David Byrne, and Ramsey Lewis, among others, and has authored a set of musical instruction books and CDs entitled Train Your Voice.

In the late 90's Koldenhoven began writing and producing her own solo recordings, including the adult contemporary Keys to the World, a gospel album called Free to Serve, and the Christmas album Heavenly Peace. This year she's back with an all new recording, entitled Infinite Voice, a collection of classically inspired compositions and new age arrangements of classics. Ms Koldenhoven's 5-ocatve voice is the only one featured on this recording, in some places layered to give a choral effect. Most of the instrumentation is synthetic, though several songs include acoustic instrumental performances from guitar, English Horn, oboe, flue, didgeridoo, and percussion.

Infinite Voice is a delicate and beautiful recording that will appeal to fans of light classical vocals from the voices of equally talented singers such as Filippa Giordano, Hayley Westerna, or Sissel.

5 out of 5 stars A lasting joy.......2004-06-18

I'm floored that this classic CD has received only one previous review. I've owned it since it was first released, and I still return to it regulary for calm joy, for stimulating relaxation, for plain good music. Dori is a great arranger (Sarah Vaughn), songwriter (Like A Lover), guitar player, and singer. On this CD he adds excellent LA studio jazz musicians (some Brazilians themselves) and at least one song by his father (I'm writing this off the cuff, without look at the liner notes.) These elements are mixed by the rhythms of samba, and as he says in "Colors" "Colors run together become as one." This CD may be his best (or maybe "Kicking Cans"), and it's accessible, with no esoteric knowledge of Brazilian music needed to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Brazilian music.......1999-02-25

Who says you can't judge a book by its cover? I bought Brasilian Serenata at a used record store several years ago, simply because I love Brazilian music and I liked the artwork on the album cover. I didn't even know who Dori Caymmi was. Much to my delight, the music inside is every bit as sensual and lush as the artwork on the cover. Dori Caymmi is as well known to Brazilian music as many of his contemporaries including Djavan, Milton Nacimento, and Ivan Lins. His voice is deep and rich and is the perfect complement to his guitar style. I love this tape. It's one that I play over and over until I can't stand to listen to it anymore, only to return to it months later to repeat the cycle. If you select it, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have over the past years.

2 out of 5 stars I've listened to a lot of Brazilian music..........2006-04-27

...and I thought this was incredibly boring. It's snoozy, unchallenging easy listening. If that's what you're looking for, then this disc is a fine example of the style. But if you want just a *little* bit of life in your music, you should look elsewhere. A disappointment, coming from the son of one of Brazil's greatest samba composers, Dorival Caymmi.

5 out of 5 stars Worth 10 Stars......by Far !!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-02

This CD is an absolute knock-out.
Dori Caymmi is one of many underrated artists from the super rich realm of Brazilian music; the reason why? the abundance of cheap and superficial commercial music everywhere.
This is a fantastic Brazilian Jazz CD with so many different interesting concepts that you wouldn't believe, concepts that only educated ears can perceive; the compositions, the performance, the "swing", the timings, the guests:
Don Grusin,
Dave Grusin,
Abraham Laboriel,
Paulinho Da Costa,
Gregg Karukas,
Brandord Marsalis,
Ivan Lins,
Yutaka Yokokura,
Teco Cardoso,
John Patitiucci,
Claudio Slon,
Herbie Hancock,
Ricardo Silveira,
etc. etc.
I recommend it to you if you're into Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, or simply into beautiful and intelectual music.

5 out of 5 stars Mais Bonita Bossa Nova.......2003-03-11

I have played Kicking Cans so many years now. It is the best CD in its time for Brasilian music. This CD takes you from Salvador Bahia to Rio Grande Do Sol with ease. Muito Obregado Dori! Muinto Prazer - Caio!

3 out of 5 stars The version of Brasil (Aquarela Do Brasil) for grown-ups.......2003-02-04

Worth the price of admission. As another reviewer stated; "very sensual".

5 out of 5 stars This CD makes me cry with joy.......2002-09-12

I've owned this CD for around 9 years and what I can say is that Kicking Cans is by far one of the best CDs I've ever owned by any acoustic guitarist. The music is Brazilian flavored easy listening jazz music but is so many miles above alot of the elevator music that you hear in stores. Where as the 1988 self-titled album is more of a soundtrack to the winter seasons, Kicking Cans, in my opinion, is music for the spring and summer seasons as the title of track 7 shows. Doris voice is absolutely incredible and passionate. Where as the 1988 self titled album is a very low-key album with very simple compositions, Kicking Cans to me is a bit more elaborate with a lot more a jazz influenced tinge but in a way that it makes a great companion to the 1988 album. What's also great about Kicking Cans is that while it's almost a decade old it doesn't sound dated at all. It's very difficult for me to write a review for this CD because I don't think I could do it any justice. Maybe a future album that is in the vein of this one might overshadow it but because of me enjoying it for over 9 years, Kicking Cans is the soundtrack to my childhood and when I look back at it, this CD truly brings back great images of it. :)

Album Description

Joyce's stunning new album 'Rio Bahia' - her 25th! - sees her joined by legendary arranger, guitarist and composer, Dori Caymmi, who having added string arrangements and sung on most tracks, has given the album a sweeping, majestic feel that will appeal not only to fans of Joyce and classic Brazilian music but also those into classic vocal Jazz.

Rio Bahia features new material from Dori and Joyce, new songwriting partnerships such as Dori with Chico Buarque and Joyce with Carlos Lyra and standards from Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes & Dorival Caymmi. The Rio Bahia jazz mood has in essence been created by Joyce's now long serving rhythm section of her husband, Tutty Moreno on drums and Rodolfo Stroeter on bass. Also guesting on the album is the great American jazz pianist Kenny Werner, and percussionist Ronaldo Silva, a samba specialist. A choir of friends from Sao Paulo also join them on many of the tracks.

Described by Antonio Carlos Jobim as "one of the greatest singers of all time", singer, composer, guitarist Joyce is one of the most revered of Brazilian singers, not only in her own country, but on the international stage. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1948, Joyce is a sophisticated urbanite, whose personal musical style was nurtured in Rio's fertile jazz/samba scene. Her sound mellifluously combines Brazilian rhythms, jazz harmonies and intelligent lyrics through a beautiful expressive voice.

It also features New Songwriting Partnerships: Dori with Chico Buarque and Joyce with Carlos Lyra. Dori Provides String Arrangements in Addition to Singing on Most Tracks. This Album is a Tale of Two Cites, Both Beautiful but Both Suffering with the Challenges of Metropolitan Modern Life". Joyce was Described by the Late Antonio Carlos Jobim as "One of the Greatest Singers of all Time".

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Laid back and right.......2007-04-27

Joyce is an important and widely recognized artist. Here with Dori who reigns from a Brazilian musical family dynasty.
Now Joyce's voice and guitar are instantly lovable. But on the first few listenings I thought Dori's presence was out of respect. Well that all changed. One of those HAH! moments when I realized Dori doesn't push because he doesn't have to. Just laid back and in his own style. Together they are great and sure to raise a smile.

Also had the rare pleasure of seeing pretty much this band here in NY last weekend in a small club. A treat that brought tears to my eyes.

4 out of 5 stars Delicate........2006-11-14

Joyce may be one of Brazil's finest singers and songwriters, but she still has a remarkably low profile around US and Europe.
On the eve of another world tour where she'll be playing clubs and small halls comes a reminder of what makes her special.
She can tackle anything from delicate ballads and jazz-tinged bossa nova to more up-beat samba, and there's a delicacy, immediacy and energy to her work that sets her apart.
This set is a tribute to the two music centres of Rio and Bahia.
She's joined by guitarist and singer Dori Caymmi, who wrote many of the songs, including his exquisite collaboration with Chico Buarque, "Fora de Hora".
There's not quite the intensity or range of one of Joyce's live performances, and Caymmi's vocals are not up to his guitar work, but there are some fine moments, from the sophisticated scat of "Joaozinho Boa Pinta" to the gentle treatment of "Saudade da Bahia".
She likes to include the unexpected and "The Colours of Joy" is a tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, sung in English and with appropriate African influences.
Check it out, then see her live.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Bossa Nova, an intelligent and swinging toast to Rio de Janeiro and Bahia.......2006-05-17

Joyce is the great composer who comes the 60s music scene in Brazil with a bright and tasty string of releases all well sung, all well arranged, all with great repertoire, nearly all by her own pen.

Dori Caymmi is the great composer who comes the 60s music scene in Brazil with a bright and tasty string of releases all well sung, all well arranged, all with great repertoire, nearly all by his own pen.

Oops! Do you think I made a mistake by repeating the same descriptive paragraph for both artists? I tell you that certainly not!

Obviously, there is some difference between them. Joyce is a gentle woman from Rio. Dori is a gentleman from the Bahia breed, from the illuminated music family of his father Dorival Caymmi.

Both Joyce and Dori have decided to meet in their first album collaboration in a toast to Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. This is the origin of the album title 'Rio-Bahia'.

What a swinging toast! What sensitive taste! What great performances in this album which was produced exclusively for Japanese market and then it is here @Amazon after being also issued in Brazil and in the UK.

Nearly all the arrangements are by Dori Caymmi, a master in swinging samba and also in romantic string sets.

Delicious voices by Joyce and hot grave tones by Dori: the voices matched beautifully.

Many new songs by Joyce and Dori except for 3 tracks, all sung in Portuguese.

Rhythm section includes Kenny Werner at the piano, Tutty Moreno on bass. A string section illuminates some tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Sugar and Salt.......2005-11-18

I was a little wary of chirpy Joyce taking on the more brooding Dori and his compositions, but they accommodate each other to stir up a delicious concoction that tastes of sugar and salt. Kenny Werner fits right in with the Brazilian musicians and Tutty Moreno is just at the top of his game on the drum set. I just saw this band touring behind this album & if you like "painterly" drummers (e.g. Motian, DeJohnette), I urge you to go see Tutty Moreno when he comes to your town.

2 out of 5 stars Careful, Dori Fans.......2003-02-04

Dori has always walked the tightrope with gentle sensuousness on one side and cloying fuzak on the other. I'm afraid he fell onto the wrong side with this one, but I have every confidence he will get back up "where he belongs". How's that for pompous?

4 out of 5 stars Live at the Blue Note.......2000-08-18

I was lucky to have seen Dori on 7/13/00 at the Blue Note in New York City. He played a couple songs from Cinema and knocked our socks off (Pink Panther and a song from a James Bond Movie). Plus playing some originals from his collection and Jobim classics!!! Was a great evening!

5 out of 5 stars A Brazilian Composer Being a Grammy 1999 nominee.......2000-07-09

Mark Murphy likes his music; Johnny Mathis, too; Lani Hall has just recorded one of his compositions; Sergio Mendes has recorded many of his songs from the 60s. Dori is one of the best composers of contemporary post-Bossa Nova Brazilian music. However, this album is quite different because he decided to show his great and well-known ability as an arranger. The original arrangement he wrote for Henry Mancini's "The Pink Panther" gave him a 1999 Grammy nomination. Each track here is a movie theme beautifully re-arranged by Dori. Very exquisite and good.

5 out of 5 stars Another hit for Dori.......1999-12-20

I'm a big fan of Dori Caymmi's music, but I admit to being a bit suspicious when I saw his new CD of arrangements of film music, including "Pink Panther". I went ahead and bought it anyway--it's fantastic! His arrangements are as clever, colorful and heartfelt as ever. His sidemen, the LA studio musicians he most often works with, are all great players--I was particularly impressed with Billy Childs, Abe Laboriel and Scott Mayo. The sound is impeccable. I do wish he'd found a Brazilian vocalist for "Manha de Carnaval"--the singer is good but her Portuguese accent leaves something to be desired. But don't let this stop you from picking up this great album!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Altogether pleasurable.......2004-06-27

Steve Barta lives in the same town I do, Colorado Springs (well, I actually live in Monument, 20 minutes north of the Springs), but this is the first time I've run across his music.

Too bad for me. Almost anyone would be thrilled to have a musician of his caliber living in their hometown.

An accomplished pianist, bandleader, composer, and producer, with Another Life Brazil Barta has absolutely nailed the Brazilian vibe. Having assembled nearly a who's who of Brazilian musicians, including Paulinho da Costa and Dori Caymmi, and written a handful of completely authentic-sounding tunes in a variety of styles, he's put it all together with striking arrangements and crystal clear production. It's also a real pleasure to hear Herbie Mann on what must be one of his very last recording sessions.

Over and above the magnificent music he makes on this disc, Barta is also an accomplished author, having written a standard work on jazz scales. Called by the late Herbie Mann "a curious blend of Aaron Copeland and Antonio Carlos Jobim," Barta has managed to synthesize a wide variety of styles and come out with a piano sound and composing voice entirely his own.

Thoroughly enjoyable, once again proving that jazz, even when produced on a private label, can be some kind of universal musical language. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sensuous Brazilian magic!.......1999-04-04

Dori Cami ranks with the immortal Antonio Carlos Jobim. The bossa nova and other Brazilian rhythms, played softly, lightly, sensually... this is THE music of romance! His interpretation of Sondheim's CLOWNS is a treat, perfectly reflecting the song's bittersweet lyrics. Some instrumentals, some Portuguese, some English lyrics. But you don't have to know the languages... the music is universal. I'm also grateful the producers put in enough money to enhance various tracks with fuller orchestrations, to set Dori's haunting voice and guitar in a jewel-case setting. For romantics and Brazilian music fans -- turn down the lights and let the music carry you away tonight.
