This album is a great anthology of Wilgrido Vargas' Golden Years (Años Dorados) during the '80s. If you're familiar with Wilfrido, you'll recognize all the songs in this album. Check out the saxophones in "El Barabarazo." The only drawback? This CD features new releases, not the original tracks with vocalists such as Rudy Pérez and "Tu Amigo" Miguelito.

This is one of the best albums that "chicas del can" ever made.
This all girls band maknig music, was for a long time the best merengue band , and this album is a grate sample of their job.

I believe if the authors of these songs had to choose someone to sing it for them, they would of chosen Fernandito Villalona. Noone can express the true passion in a song as well as he does. He is unique. All these songs are excellent and truly becoming of him. Never in a million years will there be another Fernandito Villalona. He unequivocally is the one and only "Mayimbe". A true honor to all his fellow Dominicans. "100% puro oro nos da el mayimbe"

This is what I call the real merengue music. This are the songs that Fernandito sang back in the late 70's and early 80's. If you want to listen to what I call classy Merengue. ( Te lo dice un Dominicano de a velda)

Is called "the golden Child". Considered the best Merengue Singer of all time by his Dominican peolple. His unique style makes you want to sing each one of his songs.

obviously the guy from Bremerton is pretty clueless about Latin music. 'Unsophisticated'?...then you play it! 'Fast'?...of course, it's supposed to be. 'Mechanical?'...try 'Subtle'. 'Early teens?'...actually it's danced by everyone in the carribean ages 2 and up.

As a 'white guy' I know how Merengue, Salsa, Bachata and the like can sound 'all the same' to the untrained ear. But if you listen to the words and pay attention to the rythums it's really quite enjoyable.

In short, if you want to hear European-Americans immitating Latino music, don't buy this album because you'll be dissapointed...this is the real thing.

UNSOPHISTICATED LATINO: FAST, MECHANICAL, EARLY TEENS.......1998-06-25

What is this? I didn't sample the tracks that [Amazon.Com] supplies. Wish I could have but my "modern" computer can't handle both my scanner and sound system so I disabled the sound. I thought name recognition would be enough. I expected Patrick Williams' New York Band. Try his "10th Ave" (Soundings 1987). Really catchy tunes that you'll play over and over. I love his bass trombone...

I looked forward to listening to Patrick Williams' interpretation of Latino music. Not to happen with "this" New York Band. My take is that the composition and musicians' interpretation come no where near the sophistication of the "other" New York Band. I think early teens would like the bouncy style. Listen to one track and the others will be similar in style - loud, fast, no inflection - just different singers. Where's the "feeling"? Sounded too "mechanical" to me. I thought it amusing that this group, having used a similar name to that of the 1987 group found it necessary to list a few of its copyright restrictions - one is no unauthorized "lending". What gall! Guess they were proud of their name since (in the background) they shouted it several times in two of their numbers.
