Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

If you are going to buy this, make sure you buy on amazon! The itunes version doesn't include all the songs the CD version does.

Buena Vista has done it again. Cold play's and the Jack Johnson tune's are my favorite. The best tracks are the ones where the artist gave the group all the masters separated by tracks allowing these guy to really do their magic. Some songs seem like they just grabed the original version of the song and pasted a Latin rythem on top.

I love this CD. Every cut is good. I can clearly appreciate the original artist and the Latin beat at the same time. I am so pleased to have a CD that every cut is good and I don't have to stop what I am doing in the cafe to skip a cut when the player is on scramble.

The fusion of well known pop artists (ie; U2, Coldplay, etc.) and Buena Vista Social Club totally works on this great CD.

This is disappointing...a few of the remakes are ok. Some cuts are intolerably poor. The overal quality is poor and it is not as advertised.

Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright

Nice cuban music.......2007-03-15

I have had this album a number of years, and my enthusiasm is not quite as great as many of the viewers here, because although it is generally pleasant listening, I don't think there are really any outstanding tracks or personal favorites on here.

I should add that I speak Spanish fairly well and therefore understand the lyrics, and am generally an enthusiast of Hispanic culture and music. The story of this worthy project and how this was recorded are interesting and I suspect some reviewers are moved more by sentiment than just on the merits of the music, some of which seems very middle-of-the-road to me, albeit pleasant enough for casual listening.

Ry Cooder did a good thing reassembling these wonderfully talented and forgotten stars of another period. Great album, wish it was a double, triple, a collection. I would buy it. Can't replace these icons of another era and their sound will be gone with them.

All done in Spainish, this excellent CD has a book included with translations and facts about the players. The music here oozes with atmosphere, taking you to the heart of Cuba. First rate musicianship and great songs all the way through. Ry leaves the vocals to various others, but his guitar work is unmistakably present. A good veiw indeed!

Buena Vista Social Club Classic.......2007-01-16

For those of you who are fans of the Buena Vista Social Club already, this is the masterpiece. A culmination of talented musicians, soul, love, and sultry afternoons with a cool drink getting ready to kick on into the night!

For those of you who have never listened to this style of music, don't just listen to it once as you could compare it to the first 3 olives you have ever eaten.

The first one shocks your taste with a layered complexity that is both sharp and mellow, leaving you with a look on your face that says "what just happened?".

The second takes you back to the memory of your first taste, and enjoying re-living the sensation, you start looking for more.

The third confirms your interests and instils an infatuation with something unique, powerful, and good for the heart and soul, that will be played over and over again.

Michael Fletcher reviewed this CD spot-on. And I concur with the review that it is magical--it is indeed that. I can listen to it over and over at work or at home! It seems to suit almost any mood and simply nourishes the soul. I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys good music--you don't even need to be a fan of Cuban music. I certainly am not well versed in Latin music, but am a definite fan of this album!

When Grammy-winning Buena Vista Social club lead vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer died in August 2005 at the age of 78, he was within a few weeks of accomplishing a lifelong ambition: to record an album of suave, sexy, elegant Cuban boleros. The first acknowledged tune of the genre, "Tristezas," was composed in Santiago by Pepe Sánchez during the late 1800s. The form was descended from a Spanish waltz-like dance of the same name, which in turn evolved from the French contradanse and, even earlier on, from English rural styles. Strangely, Ferrer had repeatedly been told that his voice was not sufficiently "manly" for these leisurely, achingly romantic ballads. But judging by the present tracks--and despite the inevitable depredations of age, which only give his interpretations an added, rueful vulnerability--this is demonstrably untrue. The singer's reedy tenor, in some cases rescued from high-quality demos with instrumentals recorded posthumously, touches places in a listener's soul that no power-popster with an umpteen-octave range and mud-slides of melisma could remotely approach. Ferrer is joined by BVSC band-mates Rubén González (piano) and Omara Portuondo (vocals) on one tune each and is accompanied by the soulfully rinky-tink piano of Roberto Fonseca, Orlando "Cachaíto" López's sinuous, resonant acoustic bass and Manuel Galbán's sensitive guitar, with Ramses Rodrigues and Emilio del Monte manning trap drums and percussion. Overall, Mi Sueño ("My Dream") has a late-night feeling, as though captured amid an after-hours jam in a smoky, malt-scented Havana nightclub, long after sleeves have been pushed up and chairs piled on the tables. --Christina Roden

Ibrahim Ferrer shows yet again the finesse and maturity of a well seasoned vocalist who over the years has become better and better. With the Buena Vista sound backing him up he lets loose song after song with the incredible range and confidence only a master can produce. A wonderful posthumos album with his take on several classics. A spellbinding duet with Omar and impeccable rythm that grows on you the more you listen to it. Its wonderful to compare to his more youthful works and see that what he gave up in fiestiness he more than makes up for in sheer class and charisma. A must buy.

Just amazing, I play it over and over! For me it serves as a bridge that brings to reality a cuba that was experienced by a generation that is slowly passing like the Maestro Ibrahim Ferrer. I grew up with this style/era of music in thanks to my grandparents.It allows me to be a part of them and bring to them a little piece of the Cuba they left behind.

Mi Sueno is the kind of CD that you can put on and play over and over again for hours. Ibrahim sings each song with such conviction you feel every note and you know he has been in love and was deeply in love when he sang these songs. Rest in peace Ibrahim! I have quite a few of Ibrahim Ferrer's recorded music and found his boleros (slower songs) quite pleasing and emotional. I would pick the boleros he sang out of all the Buena Vista recordings and put them on my MP3 player because I liked the soulful emotion he envoked when he sang. It's hard to describe in words, sometimes an artist interpretation of a song really touches the soul, Ibrahim was one of these unique artists. I was very pleased to see that there is finally a release of just slow songs, about love and relationships, even if you don't understand the Spanish language, I think you will hear his Cuban soul and warmth penetrate your senses. I must say that in his earlier recordings ( from the original Buena Vista recordings) the tone and clarity of his voice was prime. In this CD, one can hear the aging of his voice a bit, but don't let that deter you from adding this CD to your collection, for such a soulfoul voice only comes about once in a decade or two, and Ibrahim's expressive qualities were as eminently apparent in his earlier years as they were in his late years. This is a good selection of songs, some were very popular, such as "Perfidia," and "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas," others less recognizable, but all suitable for both listening and slow dancing.

It should never cease to amaze how spry and dramatically potent a force is the Buena Vista Social Club. The group--really a gaggle of aging Cuban maestros brought together for stunning all-star performances--keeps its footing in Cuban dance music at the same time as it revels in the lax tempo of layered hand percussion and traditional rhythms. Ibrahim Ferrer stepped to the international fore as the vocalist on the eponymous BVSC CD in 1997 and here furthers his already-obvious command of everything from sultry, horn-swaying ballads to gritty son tunes like "Mamí Me Gustá." Ferrer's tattered vocal inflections shape the more rollicking tunes so their texture is palpable, especially when belted in antiphonal give-and-takes with the rest of the huge band he totes along here. A 15-member-strong string section steps forward on the bolero tracks, which send off a smoldering passion that's startling in light of the BVSC's heightened, horn-charged charts. But the rich string passages color songs in wide brush strokes, which is to say that they heighten the passion to no end. I LIKE A SPICY CUBAN DISH (In A Little Black Dress).......2007-03-19

[*I first became conscious of the strange phenomenon when I was about 15 years old: I ordered something to eat in a little fast food Mexican joint on Venice Boulevard in West Los Angeles. Unbeknownst to the young Latinas working behind the counter, the very next person to place his order was my Pa, and when he joined me at a table, he related to me how one girl said to her co-worker after I walked away, "That guy was cute," and the other agreed.*]

Good Friend Melanie gave me the IBRAHIM FERRER album of Cuban Jazz as a gift the Christmas before last. (I had mentioned beforehand that I have more music than time to hear it, but she listened to me about like men listen to women. No one's to blame for the communication disconnect between the genders, really, because we have such disparate origins: A woman is from Venus and a man is from a woman's "Monologue.")

[*Including my ENTIRE life, I can count on two fingers how many White, Black, or Asian women have had me and the "Mystery Dance" occupying the same thought in their mind. But Hispanic women have always found me to be irresistible, and I don't know why. I am a very ordinary looking, but extremely analytical individual who tends to mentally dissect everything in order to comprehend why and how such and such is so. But I've yet to concoct even the most rudimentary theory to explain the Latin woman's attraction to me.*]

I almost gave up on the IBRAHIM FERRER recording because I just couldn't seem to warm up to it for the longest time. At one point, I considered posting a Two-Star review on this website which I thought to title, "I'LL HAVE THE NUMBER THREE COMBINATION PLATE AND A MARGARITA, PLEASE." The music just made me feel like I was sitting in a booth at a Mexican restaurant. "Not that there's anything wrong with that", but tunes for home listening? And since Good Friend Melanie wasn't too crazy about Bright Size Life - the Pat Metheny disc I had given to her - we even considered trading, and each of us keeping the item we had purchased.

[*The brilliant and world-renowned South American sociologist, Yoey O'Dogherty, once observed that, "Hispanic women are especially drawn to the warm magnetism of masculine intensity, just as conversely, snowmen are drawn to frigid climates." And in my youth I was sometimes known by the nickname, "Mister Intense." Perhaps this accounts for why Latinas are so susceptible to the energy of my aura?*]

I finally decided that I would play nothing but IBRAHIM FERRER whenever writing on my computer until either my ears became educated enough to enjoy it, or until I could stand it no longer and gave it away to Lupe, the waitress at Abuelo's Mexican Food Embassy who always gives me extra guacamole and a wink.

[*You know how women can give men "the once over" without tipping their hand to the guys, while men just ogle openly? Well, these spicy Hispanic gals sometimes lose their highly refined skills around me, unable to extinguish the hungry flames in their orbs. Even at my advanced age of 47, wearing spectacles, and with plenty of grey cohabitating with the brown on my scalp and in my goatee, I still sometimes catch `em eyeing me.*]

Well, to my great surprise, I not only eventually came to differentiate between all of these melodies, but came to embrace them as if they were part of my own culture. The tremendous blasts of brass; the lively, intricate percussion work; the sparse but soulful guitar touches of Ry Cooder; and the emotional and romantic Spanish vocals really move me ... and they make my writing move, too. I've found that IBRAHIM FERRER puts some added zest into my words - really gets the creative juices flowing. (Can't you tell?) Because of its dancing rhythms, it's become maybe my very favorite disc to play as background music while writing anything.

[*I once had a sweet and shy Mexican girl tell me about a week before her wedding that all along it was me she had been hoping to catch. And less than twelve months ago, this 18-year-old hot Hispanic thang let it be known that she was interested in me. (She went by Wendy, but I'm pretty sure her Mama named her Maria.) She was a real cutie and had an absolutely OUTRAGEOUS body to go with that face: all the curves in just the right places and very well pronounced like: "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain!" To borrow from The Commodores, she was truly built like a "Brick OWse!" The night I had to turn her down, pointing out that at my age I was nearly old enough to be her grandpa, I drove home gnawing on my knuckles and chanting over and over again, "There had better be a Heaven! There had better be a Heaven!"*]

As if the music alone wasn't reason enough to purchase IBRAHIM FERRER, the song MARIETA contains one of the funniest lyrical passages ever. Translated into English it says: "My wife was suffering from an illness of the heart in Havana. So the doctor came one morning to examine her. He took off her dress, her p*nties, too. And her slip. But when I saw that indecency I said: This isn't good; I really don't think my wife's heart is that far down." Imagine that, a song about a doctor "playing doctor."

[*So, you're wondering why I told you how attractive Latinas find me? Well, it just so happens that I wasn't talking to you, Dude; I was trying to send a discreet message to your hot, Hispanic girlfriend. But you know what? To heck with subtlety: Hola guapa, llamame cuando tu novio esta fuera.*]

Sandoval, a Cuban ex-pat who was a founding member of Irakere, one of Havana's most legendary jazz bands, has so far won four Grammys, six Billboard Awards, and even an Emmy (for the soundtrack to For Love Of Country -- The Arturo Sandoval Story). His trumpet style, with its soaring improvisational pyrotechnics and sometimes blustery but always sonorous tone, has influenced an entire generation of young Latin players. Arturo Sandoval is the king of Latin jazz and one of the world's most dynamic performers and this album proves just that!

This album is sophisticated and elegant, but also displays plenty of fire. I love that ten of the eleven songs are original compositions by Arturo himself, I think they really highlight his renowned Latin side.

His band also sounds incredible and really rounds out the whole album. The whole band sounds really excited to be a part of it and the songs just flows so smoothly.

It's high-powered and shows remarkable range, but at time is also moody and graceful, and it even showcases Sandoval singing!

Rumba Palace....Not so much.......2007-06-01

I have been an Arturo fan since before he came to the US. I was very disappointed with this CD. First, the arraignments are aweful, as if they were thrown togather just to fill the disc, no imagination, each track sounds the same as the next. Second, the CD was overproduced. Third, the CD would put you to sleep, not entice you to dance as Arturo said in an interview. Arturo, you can do better. Try allowing others do the arrainging on some of the tracks for a better variety. Try using actual musicians, rather than laying mutiple tracks of the same musician playing the various tracks. I will still be a loyal fan and buy your next CD, but I was very disappointed in this effort.

Something is missing.........2007-05-23

Finally is he back with some real Arturo playing, but it feel like somethings missing. This cd do not have the soul of the earlier DanZon and Y El Tren Latino records. But still, a nice recording!!

This album pairs one of the greatest flamenco singers of today, cantaor Diego El Cigala, with one of Cuba's finest Afro-Cuban pianists, Bebo Valdes. With Valdes (father of the great Chucho Valdes) born in 1918, there's a 40-year age difference between the pianist and the singer, but they do a fine job crossing generations and oceans to discover the commonalities between Caribbean and the Iberian music, coming up with a romantic marriage of the two cultures using rumbas, guajira, sons and boleros. All the songs are classics out of the Latin music tradition, using just a handful of players in support. A unique combination of beautiful jazz piano music played by acclaimed Cuban Bebo Valdés with the sensuous hoarse voice of young Gypsy singer El Cigala. First heard them at a friend's house and could not wait until I purchased the CD for myself and to give to friends. Great selection and variety of songs. If your into salsa or any of that type of music you will really enjoy this CD. When I first put into my player I was so surprised at what I heard, I think I even said to myself what a plesant surprise to me ears. Very dancable music, and the lyrics are a plus. I also took it to work and several of my co-workers also commented on the music. One of my favorite CD's.

This CD is lively, upbeat, and rockin'! A must have if you enjoy Cuban music. As one who has vistied Cuba, this CD takes me back to hanging out in dive bars, searching for great music, big bands, lively older musicians, and dancing in every available space in the club. Honestly, I can think only of two groups of people who will enjoy this recording, and if you're in either group, I urge you to order it immediately if not sooner.

If you're one of those totally or mostly unfamiliar with Cuban jazz, you'll love this. It's a celebration of life, full of good humor and vigor. The excitement of the music is bound to get to you, and you'll wonder why you've never given it a chance before.

On the other hand, you might be quite familiar with this sound, with the vocals of veterans such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Pio Leyva, Manuel 'Puntillita Licea, Raul Planas, Jose Antonio 'Maceo' Rodriguez, and Felix Valoy, and with the full sound of trumpets, teombones, enhanced by sax, flute, and piano. If so, you'll find this the best you've heard, and will insist on its being in your collection.

If you're in neither group, well, what can I say?

Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.

The "cool school" of guitar playing.......2006-10-26

This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.

At once spicy hot and languorously sweet, Putumayo Presents Cuba is a passionate marriage of active and passive, masculine and feminine, a contemporary festival of sound whose roots were born in defiance of onerous distraction and oppression. Based on Afro-Cuban culture, whose music comes from a combination of European and African instrumentation, the songs in this collection swing with the energetic rhythms of traditional son (also the base of salsa). Layered over the repetitive beat, guitars chime, maracas add shimmy, and trumpets take the upper accent melody, often repeating or contrasting the main vocal melody. One of the finest contributions to the disc is Mi Son's "Mecanica de Amor," in which the band substitutes the violin for the lead trumpet, making a treat of the unexpected. Irakere's funky fusion "Boliviera" comes on gangbusters with beefy bass, full horn section, and featured flute melody. Most of the times, when a "cuban" compilation comes to my hands, it either contains the same and the same songs or it's just disappointing. This is a magnificent exception to this! This collection really represent the "Cuban" spirit without repeating the well-known songs. If you like this particular style you're going to love this CD and if you're unfamiliar with it you're also gonna love it!

A highly recommended title, surely worth buying... The one and only con i found is that it's length is rather short (about half-an-hour) just like all the titles from the "Putumayo" series - at least every single track is worth it :)

Putumayo has introduced me to so much great music! They have really good taste! They choose music you wouldn't normally hear and yet it's not too folksy- it's great to listen to. This is one of my favorite CDs by them. It cheers you up so much to listen to it and you can just imagine the bright blue sea off the coast of Cuba. In fact, this CD was so good- every song- that it got me into Cuban music and I've been delving into Cuban music ever since.

For his first solo album, 71-year-old trumpeter Mirabal has created a tribute to the seminal bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez. The latter was a tres-wielding maverick who reveled in Cuba's African heritage and gave new opportunities to the piano and brass. With three trumpeters on board, it is not surprising that the tracks often explode into blaring, festive, sloppy--precise fanfares, but Papi Oviedo on tres and pianist Roberto Fonseca more than hold their own. The singers also get a workout, notably on Me Bote De Guano, with its humming opening chorus and robust tenor lead vocal. The late Rubén González, who was Rodriguez's original keyboard man, is heard on Dombe Dombe, a tune he suggested for the set list. Album Description

Cuban trumpeter Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabel was among the first musicians recruited by British producer Nick Gold for the now legendary sessions at Havana's Egrem Studio that yielded the multi-platinum Buena Vista Social Club album and Wim Wenders' groundbreaking concert documentary. But the veteran player already had enjoyed a rich musical history, having performed for more than 40 years in some of the most celebrated Cuban nightclub orchestras. With this lively set of '40s-era conjunto classics, he pays tribute to pioneering Cuban composer-bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez, whose trumpet arrangements inspired Mirabel as a boy.

I'm a true collector of orginal Cuban music from the 1930 to 1970's and this CD is probably one of the best I've heard from new age bands.

Hot Latin Big Band.......2005-02-26

This album burns from start to finish. It is a straight up party album--- if you're looking for romantic make-out music, try another Buena Vista member. This record is loud and hot and made for dancing. Imagine a sweaty ballroom in a Havana casino in the 40's and this is the band that would be playing there. All of the musicians are excellent. The band has the traditional three trumpet, dual percussion, tres, bass and sonero line-up and there is not a weak member of the group. The vocalists are uniformly outstanding. Most of the album was recorded live in one take, and it definitely has the spontaneous, joyous feel of a live recording. Highly recommended.

Another Gem From A Buena Vista Social Club Veteran.......2005-01-22

I owned all the albums of Buena Vista Social Club veterans and this one I waited with great anticipation. And I'm proud to say that I am not disappointed. All the selections in this album are superb and Guajiro Mirabal's playing of the trumpet is simply superb, most specially, if you are aware that he is more than 70 years old. Trumpet sound can be very annoying because of its inherent loudness but in the hands(or mouth) of Guajiro Mirabal, it is simply intoxicating. I played the album any time of the day and it never failed to amaze me. You can listen to it in any kind of mood you are. Morning. Late afternoon. Late night.

I highly recommend this album, along with all the albums of Buena Vista Social club members. Let's enjoy this music. This is the kind of music that you will not get tired listening at. Why? Because they are made by real musicians. All the sounds you hear are coming from real instruments all recorded live in the studio. If you are tired of listening to "manufactured" music, this kind of music will surely give you an entirely different experience.
