While the tempos on Groove Armada's Vertigo vary from Fatboy Slim-ish party rockers to Air-like downtempo ambient grooves, the songs themselves are downright simple, sample-laden, and sugary sweet. And though those adjectives would be fightin' words in many contemporary dance subgenres, it is not meant as anything other than praise here. The sophomore full-length by London duo Tom Findlay and Andy Cato is unabashedly pleasurable--this is straightforward, hook-heavy stuff, aimed perfectly for the airwaves. Entire six-minute songs are crafted from just a few samples. This approach may strike some as lazy, but the music is invitingly melodic, modern dance-pop, and you'll want to hear the songs over and over, especially the uptempo "I See You Baby" and the mellow "At the River." --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars Though not many, there are some great grooves here.......2006-01-01

"Vertigo" has its share of high moments, but it also has some pretty terrible songs (mainly just the hit single "I See You Baby". It gets annoying after a while, and compared to the rest of the album it's pretty subpar. "If Everybody Looked The Same" would've been a better single). It also has some noticable filler, unfortunately. Despite this, there are definitely very good groovy tunes on this album that make it a satisfying purchase. "Whatever, Whenever" and "Serve Chilled", for example, are excellent tracks. Some songs tend to settle for some cheesy lyrics or instrumentation, but the ones that try hard to be good definitely hit their target. Overall an uneven album, but I still think it's a worthy purchase. Overrated maybe, but still slightly recommended.

Highlights include:
"Chicago"
"Whatever, Whenever"
"Dusk, You & Me"
"Serve Chilled"
"If Everybody Looked The Same"
"A Private Interlude" (to an extent)
"I See You Baby" (even though it gets old after a while)
"At The River" (parts of it)

5 out of 5 stars I am biased, I admit it..........2005-03-10

...I love everything this band puts out, but this truly is their seminal work. A heady and intoxicicating mix of ambient chill and thumping, infectious club tracks. Grove armada have a knack for making tracks people recognise and yet don't recall the name of, this adds a certian cache which gives the tracks mass appeal and longevity. Treat your ears, they'll love you for it!

4 out of 5 stars Serve chilled.......2003-12-23

I'm not exactly a big fan of Groove Armada. I do enjoy their second album but in general, they are one of those artists/bands that I just can't get into despite all the accolades they receive from critics and fans alike. I thought I would put in "Vertigo" tonight because I haven't listened to it in many, many moons. I still don't like "I See You Baby" which is one of the most annoying dance songs I have ever heard (right up there with any song by Fatboy Slim). I guess if I was to sum up a description of Groove Armada's music it's that they are a hybrid of house and ambient music. The cd kicks off with the killer deep throbbing dance beats of "Chicago". That song I definitely enjoyed. "Whatever, Whenever" crosses over into hip hop with vocals provided by M.A.D. It is the ideal track for any chill out compilation. I love the moodiness of "At the River" which can be found on a lot of chill out compilations nowadays. I loved the horn section used on "Dusk You & Me". The song definitely has a jazz influence to it and just like "At the River", a perfect song to chill out to. I definitely prefer the more mellow songs on the cd although I do think "Chicago" is a killer song. I can live without hearing "I See You Baby" ever again. "Vertigo" is by no means a terrible album. A lot of the songs are excellent however I am more inclined to side with the reviewers who thinks that Groove Armada (and/or this album in particular) is overrated.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! How many superlatives can I come up with?.......2003-09-27

Let's see "groove" To take great pleasure or satisfaction; enjoy oneself: just sitting around, grooving on the music.
To be affected with pleasurable excitement.
To react or interact harmoniously.
"armada" A large group of moving things

Definations of two words that pretty well sum up my feelings about this album!

I have to thank Claudia Black and Gigi Edgley of Farscape fame from Australia because without each of them naming "Groove Armada" their favorite group I would have never found this pure JOY! Especially track number 11 "Your Song" which upon increasing the volumn illicits uncontrollable movements out of my body, I can only think of the words "raw groove" to describe this song. None of the 13 songs need skipping because each and every one illicit a different feeling. I cleaned an entire basement one day grooving to this CD!

What can I say, this is my favorite CD at the moment and I will find it hard to replace!

2 out of 5 stars Some great - but overrated.......2003-01-05

A couple of great tracks in Inside My Mind (spooky, trippy good), and At The River. Good to have/get - but under produced and overrated.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

To classify Vertigo as new age almost does it a disservice; not because the elements aren't there, but because the term doesn't adequately describe the music on this CD. Jesse Cook performs the blend of flamenco and various world music styles that is Vertigo with a gentle yet enthusiastic style, so that the up-tempo "That's Right!" (as with Miles Davis's "So What," you can hear the title phrase in the music) and slightly bluesy "Avocado" are just as great to listen to as the slower, cinematic "Cancion Triste" (featuring cellist Ofra Harnoy) or "Breathing Below Surface." Holly Cole's vocals on "Fragile" are a special treat; while Cook's guitar is the reason to get this CD, he never overrides his guest stars. Vertigo is exciting without being intrusive, soothing without putting you to sleep. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Something Different, Something Great.......2007-01-06

I was introduced to the music of Jesse Cook by a friend. Usually new music has to grow on me before I realize I like it. In this case I was immediately drawn to the music and enjoyed it from the word go. I especially like the opening number on Vertigo. It is so fun and lively. Almost seems like a spontaneous production, very candid and personal.

5 out of 5 stars Just so good!.......2006-06-28

I bought this album for the song "Fragile" featuring Holly Cole doing the vocals. That song is great, but I found that all the tracks were great. What an incredible guitar talent and he's backed by several other talented people.

Just a great cd!

5 out of 5 stars Wow this really is a good c.d........2006-04-04

I have never heard of this c.d. or the of J. Cook before I heard one of his cuts on XM and had to pick it up. I like every track and hope to buy more of his c.d.'s.
I am a painter/artist and this is the perfect stuff for me to create to.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2005-07-19

Excellent value for the money, great cd, arrived in time for father's day- thank you very much

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2004-03-20

I have had the pleaure of listening to Jesse Cook live in Guelph Ontario, and they played a few songs from this CD. I was very very impressed and I still consider it to be the best live performance I have seen. This album is a fusion of many styles and should be listened to without trying to force it into one genre or another. All of the performers on this CD are very talented artists and they mesh perfectly. Very creative use of many instruments including a wooden box. The music is rich and detailed but simple at the same time.

Highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars Excellent performances of a selection of Herrmann's later film scores.......2007-06-15

Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic produce fine performances of a selection of Herrmann's post-1955 film scores.

The music itself is of variable musical interest.
The music from "The Man who Knew too Much", "Vertigo", "Marnie", "North by Northwest", "Taxi Driver" and "Psycho" shows Herrmann at his best.
"Torn Curtain" and "Fahrenheit 451" find Herrmann at his least inspired and it is a pity Salonen didn't jettison these items in favour of something else.

The performances cannot be faulted and lovers of Herrmann's music will find much to enjoy here.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, at reduced price.......2006-08-15

As much (if not more) than any other film composer, Bernard Herrmann's music stands up to listening independent of the films. The emphasis here is on Herrmann's scores for Hitchcock, when both men were arguably at their creative heights.

Note: this is NOT a collection of original soundtrack recordings. However, Salonen and the LA Philharmonic at absolutely top-notch, and the recording is beautiful. Certain subtleties are actually easier to hear on this recording than on some of the originals.

As if I couldn't recommend this highly enough, the price has been reduced on this reissue! This deserves a wide audience, don't hesitate to buy it.

Album Description

Guitarist John Five, known for his work with Marilyn Manson, David Lee Roth, Rob Halford, etc., delivers his first instrumental solo record, "Vertigo." Five shows phenomenal diversity as a writer/guitarist and "Vertigo" further showcases him as one of the most technically advanced guitarists today. Fans of driving rhythms and ear-catching, over the top, guitar work will keep this in their CD player for months on end.

5 out of 5 stars Give John 5 a chance.......2007-04-18

Listening to these songs not knowing who the artist is, chances are you wouldn't know it's the same guitarist who played with Marilyn Manson for several years. Who knew John Lowery (stage name: John 5) had this kind of stuff bottled up? It's fairly apparent John's musical capabilities were held back while in Manson, judging by how technically advanced these songs are in comparison to the simple gothic riffs he was playing before.

Vertigo is entirely instrumental, and it's only fitting so John can showcase his talents. He handles all guitars, banjo, bass, mandolin, and lap steel. This album fuses metal, bluegrass, and even country - and it works. At times the shredding is somewhat over-the-top, but from start to finish John's playing is pleasantly overwhelming. Don't expect a masterpiece like Steve Vai might put forth, but expect an impressive solo effort from an instrumentalist with a metal background.

Give John 5 a chance, because you may be surprised with what a lipstick-smeared rocker can bring to the table.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2006-01-25

This album really sucks! John 5 shows some very good technique but that's all! Mono-dimensional solo work, same riffs, same drums and rhythm section, useless and ridiculous effects, no general idea. Inadequate inclusion of country melodies and old-fashion elements. There's nothing really interesting in the album, nothing to compare with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Allan Holdsworth, Eric Johnson.

5 out of 5 stars Makes a change.......2005-08-01

Frankly, i wasn't a huge manson fan, perhaps it was his die hard fans and their average age of 15 and little in the way of musical diversity, however the man wrote great rock, but manson isnt the one im reviewing.
John 5 is hyped, but in the wrong direction certain reviewers, giving scores of 1 or 0 claim that he is all hyper and playing with manson in makeup built him up. But then, John Lowery is a respected player Vai himself said that the new album showed origionality and creativity, Les Paul (heard of him guys?) having heard Lowery play urged him to release a solo effort, and he did.
I own satrianis surfing with the alien and crystal planet, and have heard some of his best tracks, the same goes for vai, owning flex-able flex-able leftovers (all fancy techniques and flash, i thought someone said that about john, but leftovers really was scraping the bucket) passion and warfare and the ultra zone, yet vai never gained the popularity manson did, perhaps due to image.
In relation to the person who said lowerys record label was poor and that he should have given up, Andy timmons, an amazing player, still only plays on vais favoured nations label, a label so small the cd that was then this is now, is nearly impossible to find in stores, also, if lowery is so washed up why is it that hes playing for rob zombie on tour, or that, due to his "poor tone" he has previously played for david lee roth and rob halford, and, wait who else played for lee roth.. oh yeh, vai.
Frankly, i like Vai and Satriani, but! their records are samey, i welcome country techniques seen in john 5s playing, chicken pickin' right through to banjo rolls, infact, i challenge those downraters to actually play zugg island conflict or sugar foot rag to the level that john 5 can, amazing record, good technique, a breath of fresh air from the usual overinflated shred scene

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2005-03-26

Who seriously thought that John 5 of all people would kick this much A$$!!! Manson held this guitar player back way too much!!! John 5 is so talented that he is as good as Vai and Satriani. This album is so technicly beautiful that it is hard to explain and it really showcases John 5's skill as a guitar player. Thank you Johhy,I love you!!!

5 out of 5 stars Insturmental Rock At Its Best.......2005-01-26

I have been a fan of Marilyn Manson for a while (John 5's former band for those of you who have been living under a rock), but the band didn't let John 5 showcase his skills nearly as much as this album does. It's an incredible trip from industrial to rockabilly to metal... this man is an incredibly versitile guitar player.

This is the most haunting and hypnotic of all of Bernard Herrmann's scores (which include Psycho and North By Northwest)--from the most haunting and hypnotic of all Alfred Hitchcock films. This is deeply mysterious music, in keeping with the echoes of the past that keep recurring in the movie. As the dizzying main theme opens up before you, you can feel yourself falling right right in. (Herrmann himself did a sort of variation on it for Obsession, the 1976 Paul Schrader/Brian DePalma re-working of Vertigo, released when the earlier picture had been out of circulation for many years.) Perhaps the greatest compliment one could give this soundtrack is that it's as powerful and unforgettable as the images it was written to accompany. And it stands beautifully on its own, as well. --Jim Emerson

3 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Herrmann, 1 for the Interpretation.......2006-01-19

Is Bernard Herrmann's "Vertigo" score the best ever written for a movie? It would be hard to argue against it. What other film score has the depth, sorrow and beauty of this one? The music as heard in the film is exactly the way Herrmann(and Hitch, of course) wanted it to be. (I highly recommend picking up the newly released soundtrack of "The Wrong Man", a CD which includes many studio outtakes of what was not used in that great, tragic film. Listening to what was rejected makes Herrmann's choices very understandable. He was always right.) So what we get in the released film -- at least in this case -- is Herrmann's most cherished intentions.

Of course, any great piece of music can be reinterpreted. But there is only one word to describe the McNeely/RSO version: lugubrious. The slowness is too slow, the loudness is too loud, the subtle transitions between themes are made four-square and obvious. Basically, McNeely has turned Bernard Herrmann into John Williams.

Much better choice: locate the original Muir Matheson soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars One of Herrmann's Greatest Scores Wonderfully Recorded.......2005-10-18

Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Hitchcock's collaborations are legendary. The two seemed to complement each other so well: Hitchcock's mastery at creating suspense combining with Herrmann's ferocious, mysterious and thrilling music immeasurably enhancing the experience. Vertigo is the pinnacle of their work together.

The score is seductive, hypnotic and haunting. It brilliantly captures the essence of the character Scottie's (James Stewart) romantic, yet obsessive feelings for Madeleine (Kim Novak). The score deftly moves between the romantic and the suspenseful.

The album starts off with the famous title music. Swirling strings and vibraphones creating a dream-like atmosphere that marries perfectly with the striking images of Saul Bass. After the titles conclude, a driving string ostinato punctuated with bursts of brass underscores a chase scene where Scottie first encounters vertigo. An amazing piece of music.

Introduced in the third track is a Spanish-like motif that is used to signify Madeleine's connection to her ancestor Carlotta Valdez. The motif is repeated constantly creating an eerie and hypnotic effect on the listener.

The love theme, featured throughout the score is heard fully in the outstanding 'Scene d'Amour' and is the highlight of the album. In just under six minutes, Herrmann builds and builds the emotion until the magnificent climax of the piece.

Due to a musicians strike at the time of the film's music recording session, Bernard Herrmann did not actually conduct the score that exists in the film. Apparently Herrmann thought the conductor, Muir Mathieson did a sloppy job. Well this new recording by Joel McNeely is quite simply outstanding. The playing by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is superb and the album features wonderful sound quality. This allows the listener to study the detail of Herrmann's unique orchestrations closer than that of the original recording.

The album comes complete with extensive liner notes, featuring track by track analysis and a small biography on Herrmann.

Vertigo is an outstanding score. An essential album for any film score collector.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant Release of a Uniquely Haunting, Powerful Score.......2005-05-08

Unlike most composers both before and after, Bernard Herrman was not interested in creating a melodic score reflective of popular music of the time. He instead approached the work as something of a "tone poem" that reflected the uniqueness of each scene and of the film in its totality. From the 1940s through the 1970s his work fueled the power of many famous films such as CITIZEN KANE--but it was really with the legendary director Alfred Hitchcock that he found his best partnership.

VERTIGO is possibly the single most studied American film of the 20th Century, a remarkably complex film that fuses everything from story to color design to create an almost inexhaustible vision of obsession. Not the least of the film's layers are the score, which is regarded as not only one of Herrmann's finest works, but one of the finest film scores in film history.

Much of the score has the dreamy, fluid tone of a calm stream--and Herrmann unexpectedly punctuates the flow to incredible effect with unexpected jabs of sound, sound that sometimes comes as suddenly as an unexpected blow, that sometimes rises from a covertly ominous tone to an overwhelmingly paranoid edge. The overall structure is open-ended, with little in the way of any direction that be considered a resolution.

Two of Herrmann's themes here are particularly famous. The most obvious of these might be termed "the Vertigo Waltz"--a strange, cyclical series of notes that emerges from the background flow and perfectly expresses the film's repeating themes of building obsession, disorientation, and emotional discord. Equally haunting is the "Madeline" theme, which seems based on a four-note, open-ended phrase that rises above everything from the "waltz" to Spanish accents associated with the figure of the long-dead Carlotta. This particular theme has the quality of the human voice calling out in tremendous longing--but without hope of a saving response.

The Varse Sarabande release, which offers the score as recorded by Joel McNeely and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, is very fine in quality. It also includes an extremely well-written and well-researched fourteen page booklet that describes Herrmann's work both here and in other films as well as the film itself. It is an elegant offering, well worth seeking out.

5 out of 5 stars An American classic.......2005-04-26

Hermann's score for Vertigo is one of the most beautiful and compelling pieces of music I've ever heard. It's not only great "movie" music, it's great music.

Hermann deserves to be ranked as one of the great American composers, along with Copeland and and both Bernsteins.

The recording displays the music in a splashy stereo that retrieves it from the mono of the film.

This is music to listen to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly romantic to the last note.......2005-01-16

The music in the film "Vertigo" (when I first saw it several years ago) captured me immediately with an enchanting yet chilling opening. Bernard Herrman had an almost spiritual bond with the Hitchcock films he scored and somehow knew precisely what Hitch wanted in each scene. Although the original Herrman recording of the score is the ultimate auditory gem, the masterful re-recording of the score by Joel McNeely's Royal Scottish Orchestra captures the passionate obsession of the film with great flourish. To all fans of "Vertigo" the film and to movie music enthusiasts, I highly recommend this score. The only suggestion I would venture to potential listeners would be to see the film first (of course), as the story greatly intensifies the emotion of the score. Chills run up and down my spine each time I listen to the score. It will never cease to excite me. Bravo!

1 out of 5 stars Vertigo - 2 songs at full CD price - ripoff.......2007-03-08

I was expecting a great CD. What I got was 2 songs at more than what a regular 12 song CD would have cost me. There was definately false advertising with this one.

2 out of 5 stars Who mastered this?.......2007-01-30

Great rocking tunes - musically. There is no digital headroom though with the mix - its pegged to the max. The songs are extremely compressed to the point of distortion even at low volume. It sounds like someone deaf mastered these songs. Even the vocals are distorted. Maybe that's how they wanted it, but this seems to be the growing trend with all digital music - to see how much headroom can be squeezed out of digital levels to the point of low level distortion. Bottom line - the songs rock, but the audiophile in me says they sound like c-r-a-p. It would have sounded better having the band play in a garage and putting up 2 cheap microphones to capture the moment instead of wasting money on a deaf engineer :)

5 out of 5 stars FED UP WITH "FED UP".......2006-03-26

U2 had nothing to do with denying Mariah the Grammy for Album of the Year. The listeners/fans/other musicians elevated their newest album to that great height. Just because an album might sell the most in one year does not mean it is the best of that year. Don't get so irritated and angry about who wins what. Relax & Enjoy the music!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGLES OF ALL TIME.......2006-02-12

I was so happy to learn that U2 won so many grammys including the album of the year.U2 are a great band who richly deserved all their awards and the academy was right in honouring them. This is a great song AND I REPEAT THAT PLEASE BUY THIS SINGLE OR BUY THEIR ENTIRE ALBUM HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB.Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Original and Creative.......2005-09-22

One reviewer said the guitar riff sounds like a Hanson song, so I checked it out. No, it doesn't sound similar to me. Anyway, I have never heard anything like Vertigo before, it is probably U2's best and is incredibly original (with an awesome video). This track comes from a truly great album, How To Dismanlt An Atomic Bomb. It is definately worth your money.

4 out of 5 stars A neglected master.......2002-04-10

This album of Bernard Herrmann film scores, performed by Esa-Pekka Salonen and the LA Philharmonic, is truly astounding in the SACD format. Selections range from The Man Who Knew Too Much, to Psycho, from Marnie to Vertigo and from Fahrenheit 451 to Taxi Driver. Listening to this music you discover a power that few composers have been able to inject into their compositions. If you've seen any of the films from which these selections are taken, close your eyes, the movie plays in your mind and you'll realize the extent to which Herrmann was a cinematic musical genius. His music perfectly captured the mood, ambience, story and characters of the movies he scored. This recording is a true delight. Highly Recommended.
