While she came to global prominence as the female singer on the Buena Vista Social Club album and in the film, Omara Portuondo has a career that--like the other participants--stretches back many years. She puts her experience to good use on this record, sounding for all the world like a Cuban Billie Holiday, smoky and quietly tragic, with a history of lost love. The lush arrangements, which often sound transplanted straight from 1950s Havana, frame her voice exquisitely while guests such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Rubén González add their inimitable talents to the mix. Her reading of "The Man I Love" ("El Hombre Que Yo Ame") is also a microcosm of the disc--slightly jazzy, with a yearning vocal that's emotive without ever being overwrought. There's little doubt that Portuondo is a world-class singer, and this is the ideal showcase for her extraordinary talents. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars What a voice!.......2007-05-13

I had heard Omara Portuondo only on the Buena Vista Social Club CD, so I didn't know what to expect. I really love this CD. Her selections and delivery show great emotional range and a sense of humor -- lovely!

5 out of 5 stars Omara Sears my Synapses. Let her Blister yours, too.. .......2006-10-27

Euphoria. Endorphin overload. Shake yourself a martini or something equally svelte, put this on, find the divan on the patio and just let all gringo unpleasantness evaporate into the Habana infused dusk.

This is the best of all the Buena Vista Social Club productions, IMAO. And whatever that woman up in one of the featured reviews means in saying that this music isn't danceable, I have no idea. Maybe she's in traction or something and can't move. I mean, I barely can myself. It takes something special to bring whatever rhythm I have out of me, but Omara does it every time. No drum machines or thumping bass, true- she's much more potent than that. It's much more a Billie Holiday slow burn, but in Spanish, y el espanol es una idioma mas proximo al corazón que ingles.

El fuego va consumirle.

Sorry about that. Soy el asesino del espanol. But it is still one of el gitano's axioms that if he can break his excreble Spanish down on a lady, then the repartee is practically over. And Omara is one of his very most secret weapons. Loose her, and the party or date will- how to say this - improve. Coulé, coupé, touché.

It happens every time. This album comes with el gitano's seal of guarantee. Buy it, use it with judicious abandon, and enjoy..

4 out of 5 stars Excellent representation of this genre.......2005-10-06

Another wonderful cd from the buena vista social club. Excellent variety of fast paced and slow songs. I highly recommend this cd if you have bought any of the others.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2004-05-14

Very laid back CD. This CD really highlights Omara's skill as a singer, she sings with great emotion. Highly reccomended! One of the best recordings out of the "Buena Vista" series. On this recording, thankfully, Ry Cooder is not mucking about, this recording is pure Cuban soul.

5 out of 5 stars Builds on a great foundation.......2004-04-27

Since I was first introduced to the jewels of Cuba's past, I have craved more and more of this wonderful music. Omara's solo CD does not dissapoint, her voice is beautiful and the orchestrations are superb. Detractors of Ry Cooder's slide guitar will be happy to know that it is absent from this release.

If there's a certain instant familiarity to this collaborative celebration between U.S. guitar icon/musicologist Ry Cooder and Cuban fret legend Manuel Galbán, it's only testimony to how deeply the island nation's rich musical heritage permeated American pop music in the '50s, '60s, and beyond. Cooder and Galbán (a key compatriot in the American guitarist's Buena Vista Social Club project) invent a back-to-the-future sound--twin guitars fronting a Cuban rhythm section of two drum kits, congas, and bass--whose dreamy swing quotient is matched only by its sense of mirthful abandon. Thus tracks like "Dru Me Negrita" and "Los Twangueros" manage to evoke everything from Link Wray, Duane Eddy, and the Ventures to Mancini and Esquivel, while Cooder and Galbán twirl a standard like "Patricia" and the nervy title track around dueling poles of tradition and experimentation with deceptive grace. It's joyous, mercurial stuff that the two musicians conjure at their fingertips. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

As Cooder has written - ''You can look at this as a road trip through different worldless fantasy landscapes. Sometimes you're in bright daylight, sometimes the streets are dark & empty. You're riding with the Conjunto Sinuendo - drummers Jim Keltner & Joachim Cooder, Conga-player ''Anga'' Diaz, & bassist Cachaito Lopez, to hold you on the road. High performance Twang!'' Slipcase. 4 out of 5 stars Mambo Sinuendo.......2007-02-12

Excellent album, , merging of cubano / latino sounds and rhythm combinations with early 60's guitar sound and electric amp effects. Best Ry Cooder album I've purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Mambo Sinuendo - R Cooder.......2007-01-05

Very good - fans of Bueno Vista Social Club will not be disappointed. Sonically superior and rather mellow.

5 out of 5 stars Unbearably Cool Guitar.......2006-01-18

I first heard "Drume Negrita" on my local NPR station (Oregon Public Broadcasting has a great night time lineup) about a year ago and nearly lost it when I heard all that fabulous twang, reverb and slow tremolo, played with such taste and restraint that I knew it must be a master at work. I was not surprised to find out that Ry Cooder was involved, but the CD is even more rewarding than I expected for there are two great masters at play here.

Ry Cooder has long demonstrated his nearly frightening ability to deeply assimilate remote cultural influences, never betraying the slightest condescension. He finds himself in the presence of Cuban master Manuel Galban whose sense of the obscure and beautiful is a match for his own; indeed, it is often hard to tell who is who, as the strings bend and chime as if with one mind.

If all that weren't enough, the superb accompaniment lifts Ry and Manuel ever higher with flawless and soulful Carribean rhythms. The syncopations - the accents - the perpetual motion - all lend a sense of absolute inevitability to these songs, as if they have always existed.

I can't stop listening to this one. 5 stars, one of Ry's best efforts!

5 out of 5 stars my favorite Ry Cooder.......2006-01-10

while i have difficulty getting into some Ry Cooder albums, this one is starkly different. I consider this album to have some of the most important guitar works that i own, the compositions and his guitar tones are immaculate. This album and of course the Bueno Vista Social Club are the ones that do it for me.

5 out of 5 stars Can I Please Give This 6 Stars?.......2005-12-10

This was, in my world, the album of the year, and something I listen to a million times more often than the Buena Vista stuff, (which I like). I've turned many, many people on to this recording. The melodies are timeless, yet exotic, the rhythms quietly syncopated and complex, Ry's background/ambient guitar flourishes are exercises in restraint while accentuating the hazy atmosphere of the sessions ... and when he adds some slide, it gets downright spacy. And it turned me on to the unique quality of musico cubano, and elicited some pangs of regret that we've been blockaded, politically, from the wonderful aspects of this culture. Definitely Ry's greatest achievement - the Cuban project in general, this recording in particular.

This CD was a gem. I ordered it on a whim based on the other rave reviews. I'm so glad I did. We put it on my CD player and mix it with "Steel Drum Party" CD and Bob Marley's "Legend" CD when we're out by the pool. It makes for a great pool mix and puts you in a great, relaxing, Mojito mood :)

What sounds like an early-model Casio playing "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" quickly gives way to a classic Perez Prado riff. On top of it all, Lou Bega--born in Germany to a Ugandan father and Italian mother--hoarsely exhorts the floor to "Mambo No. 5." A runaway hit in more than a dozen countries, it's an agreeable trifle, if ultimately not as charming as "Macarena" proved to be a few summers back. Throughout this cash-in album, Bega comes off like a cross between a less clever Tone-Loc and a less inspired Buster Poindexter. If there's a great Europop-Cuban fusion in the making, its standard-bearers will have to come up with more durable trashy fun than this. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for one or two spins.......2007-05-11

This is actually a fairly decent album compared to some the other stuff out there, on the air. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the necessary lasting power to make it much more than a cleaver, one man show, studio designed, self absorbed, novelty CD. His self adoring, ego-manic lyrics get old real fast even if some of them are no worse than another popular novelty song from some years back. Remember "Don't Worry, Be Happy"? Additionally, his lyrical content does nothing to give women the honor and respect they deserve. In fact, his lyrics and whole attitude of the album is very degrading toward women.

Mambo #5 is just another one of those catchy songs that you'll remember for years just like we still remember "Achy Breaky Heart", "Tip-Toe Through The Tulips" by Tiny Tim, the old lady, Mrs. Miller, whose fame was in her whistling of songs and Napoleon XIV with "They're Com'n To Take Me Away, Ha Ha".

Just because we remember certain songs doesn't necessarily make them great. Lou Bega had a catchy stinger and he got all of the mileage out of it in one release. Which may be a blessing in disguise! Oddly enough, I still enjoy this CD every so often for the melodies and rhythms. Then again, I also have the remastered album containing Napoleon XIV's only -dare I say- Top 40 HIT. And remember... Don't Worry, Be Happy!

5 out of 5 stars Mambo Some More.......2007-03-19

This CD is very fun and exciting. The music envokes fun, movement and laughs. What a feel good way to get into Mambo.

4 out of 5 stars Good album.......2006-08-24

I used to line dance to "I Got A Girl" and I always liked " Mambo No. 5" and Lou also does a good song towards the end with a salsa beat to it. A very unique album.

2 out of 5 stars good for kids, I guess.......2006-07-20

The music is way too "synthy" for me. In many cases the "band" sounds like a synthesizer and a drum box. Many of the lyrics are inane. Lou's voice seems ok. My 8 year old likes it a lot.

The songs have a certain pop catchiness to them, but there just isn't much depth there. I have a hard time believing that this is the king of mambo. I certeinly wish that I was as studly as he is.

1 out of 5 stars As bad as the warnings in other reviews.......2006-04-05

Mambo #5 caught my ear when listening to the car radio. It is the only passable song on the CD. I couldn't even listen all the way through the others. Just awful. I paid one cent plus shipping for it used and still feel ripped off by Mr. Bega.

Queen of salsa Celia Cruz was royalty long before the music was even called that. 100% Azucar collects 19 tracks from her '50s and '60s output on the Seeco label. Smoking even at medium tempos, the disc is full of the hot mambo rhythms of the Sonora Matancera band and the full-throttle vocals of "la incomparable Celia." Included are both sides of one of her first singles, "Ritmo, Tambo y Flores"/"Elegua Quiere Tambo," along with other unstoppable body-rockers such as "Oye Mi Rumba" and "Mi Soncito." Informed, fascinating liner notes and reproductions of beautiful vintage album covers complete this prime package. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Celia Cruz was THE QUEEN.......2004-10-12

In this colection you have the opportunity to hear Celia Cruz as a young vocalist and you will instantly understand why she is considered such a legend. Due to the age of some of the recordings the sound quality is not the best but SHE is so good it doesn't matter.

5 out of 5 stars A bit nostalgia!!!.......2003-08-30

This album is great. It shows Celia's voice young and crisp. I loved her energy and kindness towards others. We will miss Celia.

This album takes you back in time. It shows why Cuban music is so awesome and why it is loved worldwide.

Ten of the 13 tracks here are from the great Machito and his orchestra, which featured Mario Bauza and Charlie Parker as well the lesser-known but legendary Chano Pozo and Jose Mangual. Dizzy Gillespie and His Orchestra, including Quincy Jones and Mongo Santamaria, contribute the 16-minute "Manteca Suite." Other highlights include the first-ever-recorded Cuban jam session--"Con Poco Coco" by Andre's All Star--and "Cubop City" by Howard McGhee and his Afro-Cuboppers (basically Machito and his orchestra). These historical recordings come from the third stage of Afro-Cuban jazz. However, the first stages are essentially unavailable, making this CD as close to the genesis of Afro-Cuban jazz as you can get. Styles may have changed since these recordings were fresh, but sophisticated arrangements, searing horns, and fiery percussion have no expiration dates. --Jonathan E.

5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-06-08

I rate 5 star for the music, 5 star for sound quality and 4 star for surround mix. I'm not disappoint when listen to this album, each track on this album is very well selected.

I enjoy even when I listen with red book player. The CD layer also very good when compare to SACD layer.

One of my favorite album.

5 out of 5 stars very good sound.......2007-01-03

I am very pleasure when I heard this SACD, all the sound is clear and the multichannel works like a different instruments places around my room.

4 out of 5 stars voices in the room .......2006-03-14

Nice jazz sampler should appeal to most tastes in mainstream jazz since it's not too funky or free-style. What's the real kicker here is the SACD quality. Certainly not what I would call a great test cd but still good for amazing friends with the detailed sonics and tight bass lines and realistic voices in the room effects.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent.......2006-01-02

very good compilation.
sound quality on SACD is first rate.

4 out of 5 stars Good jazz SACD sampler.......2005-06-06

I'm not a jazz fan, but purchased this SACD for testing the performance of my new SACD & DVDA player. I own a lot of DVD audio discs, but this one is my first SACD.
Sound is good and well separated on the analogue 6 channel output designed for playing such a disc. But the music taste of the disc producer is strictly a jazz taste which doesn't meet that of a lot of music listeners. Beija-Flor, Come with me and Watermelon man are fantastic.
As a conclusion, it's a reliable SACD sampler but not comparable to DVDA which has almost the same sound fidelity, and include further videos, lyrics, photos and interviews.

    5 out of 5 stars UNBELIEVABLE!!!.......2006-07-06

THIS CD ROCKS!!! Recorded live at Lincoln Center in 1999. If you missed this concert, fear not. Just listen to this CD and you're there. My favorites are La Dicha Mia, Quimbara and Bemba Colora. The colaborations with the Great Tito Puente, La India(her god-daughter) and the fabulous Johnny Pacheco are genius, just like her. This CD is a total spirit lifter. You'll want to take Salsa dance lessons just to keep up. To be able to achieve the feeling of actually being there live on a CD is a total gift. Very well engineered.

5 out of 5 stars A joy of latin music / Una joya de la musica latina !.......2004-08-30

Incredible CD, her voice sounds like a trumpet singing with a deep, warm and colorfull sound, with precission and feeling.

I like the version of "Mi vida es cantar" .. was amazing...

    Very good CD!

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite........2004-06-29

I was disappointed. The CD doesn't have the type of Salsa music that would make me want to dance. Bummed.

    5 out of 5 stars BUENISIMO.......2004-01-29

MUY BUEN DISCO GRABADO EN VIVO. CELIA SEGUIRA SIENDO LA DUEÑA Y SEÑORA DE LA SALSA!

5 out of 5 stars One of her best works yet!!!.......2003-09-02

I love this album. I just picked it up and i could not stop listening to it. Her voice is none like the others. She has been probably the best sensation in latin music history. Her death was a sad day for those who cherished and love her music. She will always live on in our hearts. This album will have you on your feet dancing in no time. BUY IT!!!! IT'S THE BEST!!!

    5 out of 5 stars LOVE ULTRA-LOUNGE!.......2007-05-13

Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.

5 out of 5 stars Great for parties, easy to listen to.......2007-04-04

The Ultra-Lounge series is overall is GREAT. I bought a couple of these CD's at first to try out, and also because I wanted to have some nice background music for a dinner party. I immediately purchased 3 more after that, and I'm really pleased. The songs are cool and set a really nice atmosphere if you're having guests over.

    5 out of 5 stars I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10

The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better ultra lounge CD's .......2006-06-04

this is a fun CD to listen to. Not a lot of "serious" salsa here, quite a few novelty tunes, but they get your feet moving and your toes tapping. You will enjoy listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Mambo your way to fun.......2004-05-01

Imagine yourself on a wrap-around porch of some grand house basking in the warmth of a summer sunset. Maybe you are simply lounging on a beach with a cocktail in one hand and the hand of the one you love in the other. Perhaps you are in a tuxedo or flaming red cocktail dress and having a wonderfully dry martini (shaken, not stirred) before you get ready to head to the dance floor.

If any of those situations are real or just party of your dreams, this CD from Ultra-Lounge is for you. Rare is the day when you will find some neon decorated, pseudo-tropical paradise lounge or restaurant where drinks were served in coconut cups with little umbrellas. But you can hear the music from them. This CD has the Mambo interwoven in each and every song. You can literally see the band in their white jackets and the lavish costumes on the showgirls as they entertain you.

Yma Sumac drops in for a two song trip down memory lane. You can hear the passion and the fun in her voice. Mariah Carey eat your heart out. The organ tracks are quite amusing, and the Glow Worm Cha Cha will change your life. (Well, not really, but it shouldn't be missed.)

If you ever wanted to visit the famed Coconut Grove or be part of the action with Ricky Ricardo's Band, you need to order this CD. Even if you find that the music is just a throw-back to the days when people in limos were movie stars (and not two girls from Encino using daddy's credit card), it is still a hilarious and joyour romp threw yesteryear.

Fix a highball, add a slice of pineapple, play this CD, and enjoy life.
