Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lost Myself.......2004-04-09

The opening track of The Sun Is Often Out, Lost Myself, is one of the most spectacular songs ever recorded. It's easily one of my top ten favorite songs, and I'd definitely say I'm more than just a casual music fan. That song alone has compelled me to write this review. The rest of the album is pretty good, but none of the other material even comes close to the volcanic opener. As soon as I listened to the above sample, I knew I had to own this immediately. Sometimes samples on Amazon can be deceiving in that they may only play the best or worst parts of songs, but the sample of Lost Myself on this site is well done. If you're at all moved by the rocking desperation heard in those 30 teasing seconds, then you must get a copy of this. The track is actually five minutes and four seconds long, surprisingly lengthy for such an unbelievable song, and absolutely breathtaking from start to finish. The only other song I can compare it to is Don't Hold Your Breath by Calla. Forgive me for investing all these words in one song alone, but it really is worth more typing than I could ever do. Generally, I wouldn't buy a cd for one song, but that's exactly what I did with this cd, and I don't have a single regret about it. The rest of the album is certainly good too, but again, I just have a hard time moving on after number one. Sample that track, and if you like it, don't hesitate to purchase The Sun Is Often Out.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Britpop.......2003-08-31

The Longpigs first came to prominence in the U.K. in 1995, and this, their debut album showcases their incredible talents. This album does not have a single bad track. In between the opening chords of the first track and the closing drone of the hidden bonus song the Longpigs sketch out a landscape of distorted guitars, off-beat rhythms, gloriously impenetrable lyrics and impossibly high vocal lines that is uniquely their own. The first four tracks were released as singles and charted respectably in the U.K., and the rest of the ablum extends their vision and scope further while never straying too far from the Longpigs sound. The classic Longpigs sound is showcased on "She said". It builds and builds, it breaks down, it restarts, Crispin screeches lines like "As a matter of fact, i don't like to be scented so i'd like to smell myself instead", the guitars crunch and it's all over. Perfect 3 minute pop songs have never been this weird or crammed full of this many hooks. Other album highlighs include the plaintive sort-of-love song, "On and On", the crazy time signatures and speed changes on "Elvis" and the revivial of the quiet/loud dynamic on "All Hype".

The record still sounds fresh today, and if you like intelligent rock music, and if you agree that "The Bends" is the only Radiohead album worth worrying about, you'll love this.

Sadly the Longpigs were dealt a cruel hand by fate. The Britpop bubble burst in 1997, moving on to the po-faced mournings of the Verve and later Radiohead, and the Longpigs changed to a more sober, synth-laced sound, showcased on their second album, "Mobile Home"(1999). Gone were the 3 minute pop songs, gone were the hooks, gone was the off-kilter weirdness, and sadly gone were the tunes. It bombed. "The Sun is often out" is a poignant legacy to what might have been, but also a beautiful celebration of what was.

4 out of 5 stars The Sun Continues to Shine.......2003-04-28

I echo the same thoughts of those who consider this a shining diamond in an the too brief life of a band. 'The Sun Is Often Out' combines the bravado of the Stone Roses, the emotion of Coldplay and Radiohead, and the Britpop epics of Mansun and Embrace. It's unfortunate because this album showed so much promise, potential and talent. But that's the great thing about music, the Longpigs are no longer with us...but the music will forever be documented for others to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is in heavy rotation.......2002-11-19

First of all, I can see where people would think they sound a bit like Radiohead, but when one actually listens to it, there is much more. Also this cd is one of the harder CDs to find in the states, and I also heard the song 'On and On' for the first time on the Mission:Impossible Soundtrack, and it got me hooked. I knew instantly that if this one song was so good, than the others must be as well. I wasn't wrong. I bought this cd in 1997 and five years later, it still gets put in my 12 cds that I must have with me wherever I go. On and On, She Said, and Jesus Christ have got to be my favorites on this cd, and On and On has been my favorite song since the Mission:Impossible Soundtrack...hopefully this sheds light on how much I LOVE THIS ALBUM

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful one hit wonder.......2002-06-10

I'm not sure why The Longpigs died, since this is a wonderful, wonderful album. It leaves one with I slight sense of 'what might have been', since the opening track is one of the finest I know. 'Lost' myself and 'On and on' still choke me up and if the album loses its way after this, it is still worth buying for these alone.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

This compilation of modern-day madrigals, the latest in a fascinating series of discs from the San Francisco-based all-male vocal group Chanticleer, won the Grammy for Best Small Ensemble Performance of 1999. The selections range over a variety of styles and aesthetics, from the haunting, hypnotic sounds of Steven Stucky's Cradle Songs to the archaic, ethereal beauty and Eastern inflections of John Tavener's "Village Wedding." There are the soft (and somewhat affected) asperities of Bernard Rands' Canti d'Amor as well as the gentle, almost English pastoralism of Zhou Long's "Words of the Sun" (beautiful!) and the colorfully exotic Orientalism of Chen Yi's Tang Poems. Other examples of the wide range here are the self-conscious busywork of Augusta Read Thomas's Love Songs to the darkly lush, 12-part weave of Steven Sametz's "In Time Of," with its radiant climax and pulsating chordal sonorites like the tolling of bells. All of this Chanticleer sings with striking freshness and commitment, virtuosic to a fare-thee-well, always sensitive to the emotional cues of the texts. The recording, made at Skywalker Ranch in January of 1999, is vivid and warm, and so is much of the music. Truly a winning disc. --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent Vocalism.......2005-01-31

This compilation is essential listening, especially (but not exclusively) for those already introduced to the marvels of Chanticleer. It features a wide variety of contemporary madrigals all dedicated to the theme of love. Gorgeous polyphony, entrancing dissonance; the music is very difficult, but Chanticleer's vocalism is exemplary, as always. The whole feel of the album takes some getting used to for the uninitiated. After a few listenings, though, one can fully perceive its unique and sublime beauty.

Highlights abound. The first three tracks, all lullabies by Steven Stucky, are brilliantly executed, but it is track four, Village Wedding by John Taverner, that first knocked my socks off. It seems to represent the absolutely ideal match between composer and performer, between written and sung text. It consists of a wonderful poem by Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos, with a recurring excerpt from the Eastern Orthodox wedding ceremony interspersed throughout. Taverner is himself a member of the Eastern Orthodox church, and the song is as much a spiritual experience as a musical one.

Another fantastic piece is Words of the Sun, by Chinese composer Zhou Long. It is probably the most accessible song on the CD, with numerous lovely subtleties and nuances that can be fully appreciated after multiple exposures.

Lastly, I'd like to express my sincere conviction that In Time Of (by Steven Sametz, set to a poem by E.E. Cummings) is the single most gorgeous piece of music I have ever had the great fortune to hear. The sonority is perfectly balanced, each arching phrase better than the one before. Please, for the sake of pure unadulterated beauty, purchase this CD. You will not regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Beautifully delivered as always, but not my material........2002-07-30

I came to this album as a fan of Chanticleer more than of contemporary art music, though I like to think I do have a certain ear for the stuff. I haven't been educated in it, but I've sung some in my time in choruses, and I learned to appreciate those pieces the way that I learned to appreciate the more classical stuff as a child--by feeling it and hearing it come out of my own body, the ways that it worked, what was exciting, ect. That said, there is a point where I don't get it, and I reached that point all over this album. I thought I'd pass it on because it is hard for most of us to pick this kind of music off the shelf--there will be pieces that skewer us and some that make us fidget. For my part, I am grateful to have the album for the sake of three (long) songs. The Tavner Wedding song itself is probably worth it. But the album will never be put on leisurely.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to their reputation.......2001-03-07

Just recently had the opportunity to hear Chanticleer in concert...this CD certainly gives a cross section of their range...especially liked the "Tang Poems" and "Words of the Sun", which they performed live...very esoteric mix of musical styles...well worth the purchase for Chanticleer lovers!

4 out of 5 stars One of the best I've picked up in ages.......2000-11-25

First of all let me state that the 4 stars isn't for the performance...which is truly outstanding...it is for a few pieces that are a tad sub-par. I also want to mention that its not that the pieces are modern either, I happen to be extremely sympathetic to modern music.

I usually don't like to do reviews this way, but I'm going to make a few comments piece by piece:

1) CRADLE SONGS - The first two of this trio of lullabies are great...the ones from Brazil & Poland are hauntingly beautiful...I'm not so crazy about the one from Tobago. A fairly strong piece, its certainly interesting.

2) VILLAGE WEDDING - This is one of the best three pieces on the album, and probably the best. Hearing John Tavener's work next to his contemporaries is an easy indicator of why he is considered one of this century's greatest and certainly one of the greatest living composers. Simultaneously it is joyous, austere, reverent & spiritual. Simply beautiful & amazing.

3) CANTI D'AMOUR - This is an up & down work. I'm not sure what the composer had in mind, but I find the first part to be amusing. It reminds me of barbershop quartet. It has more somber moments too that are quite moving. Overall though, its okay.

4) WORDS OF THE SUN - After the Tavener piece, this is my favorite one. I would like to hear some of Zhou Long's other works. It is a very subtle piece. Very Chinese too, yet simultaneously western. This is one of my favorite pieces by eastern composers of western music. Lyrically, it is amazing. Its borrowed from a 20th century Chinese poem that is gorgeous in English, I'm sure its even more so in Chinese. Musically, it is very stirring.

5) TANG POEMS - This piece too is written by a Chinese composer (Chen Yi) and it is distinctly Chinese. I am intrigued at some of the techniques used by the composer. I am really pleased with the piece, although I'm sure some find it a little "too eastern." It is extremely pretty if one is accustomed to eastern melodies. The 2nd part is a bit sharper and probably less accessible than the first part.

6) THE RUB OF LOVE - One of the duller pieces on the album.

7) IN TIME OF - Sublime. The opening few bars are unearthly. Definately one of the three best pieces. They definately need to keep this one in their concert repetoire (along with the Tavener and the two pieces by Chinese composers.) This is one of those works you have to hear to believe.

8) LOVE SONGS - This is a quirky collection of tunes by Augusta Read Thomas. It runs the gamut of serious to extremely silly. There are some strong points here, but some of it is too silly to stand the test of time ("Alas, The Love of Women"). Eventhough it is extremely unconventional, the part entitled "For Stony Limits Cannot Hold Love Out" is powerful. It is piercing & strange, but it really works with the text.

There are times when I love everything on this CD, and times when some of it gets on my nerves. It is, however, never boring and the performances are superb. I highly congratulate Chanticleer for not sitting on their laurels. This is adventursome stuff and it works 90% of the time, which is more than I can say for 99% of the ensembles out there.

I highly recommend this disc for "Village Wedding," "Words of the Sun," "In Time of," and "Tang Poems."

Pick it up, be adventuresome. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic recording of contemporary choral works.......2000-09-21

Chanticleer is one of the USA's finest choral ensembles, and they have picked a marvelous and diverse program for this recording -- with something that would appeal to absolutely everybody. The inclusion of two "husband-wife" pairs in the choice of music also makes for a special connection to the theme of the disc. Of special note to this reviewer are the "delicious" sonorities of Bernard Rands's "Canti d'Amor" and Augusta Read Thomas's "Love Songs" -- Chanticleer is a group who is able to pull off this difficult music beautifully. This recording was absolutely deserving of the Grammy that is received -- one of the finest discs of modern choral music in the past few years.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Shearing AND Kings Singers.......2002-05-26

This is a fantastic recording. There are interesting arrangements from some of the best popular music arrangers, including Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Hart and Daryl Runswick, not to mention Shearing's great new 5/4 version of his best-loved song Lullaby of Birdland, which begins with a jazz version of Brahms' Lullaby.

The Kings Singers are in fine form, with their flawless intonation and meticulous attention to creating a great sound.

Each track features just the sextet, Shearing and a double bass (played by Neil Swainson), except for One For My Baby, which adds John Harle on saxophone. That track is one of the three terrific Daryl Runswick arrangements included on the album.

Other stand-outs are:

The-Half-of-It-Dearie Blues, which sounds very similar to their much earlier version of it, i.e. sensitive and sensuous.
Gershwin's The Real American Folk Song (is a rag)
Daryl Runswick's interpretations of I Got Rhythm and Anyplace I Hang My Hat
Over the Rainbow

It is worth getting Amazon to hunt for this album for you: it is one of the very best of many fine albums the performers have made. Getting them together for this disc was a first-class idea.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09

The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20

Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15

no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.

      5 out of 5 stars great, great!!!.......2006-12-05

This is the way ,I think, Purcell should sound. No pomp and surcomstance but only great music.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!
