these short piano pieces are simple, but absolutely not boring. gurdjieff and de hartmann wrote some of the most thoughtful and sincere music you'll ever hear. I found this CD over a year ago and it's one I return to over and over again.

Cacaphonic Harmonious.......2001-07-15

Truly an exposition of beautiful "objective" listening. This music will not put you to sleep. Transitions are abrupt and engaging throughout the score's entirity. I play the music whenever I find myself searching for something to do or am bored. This music will consume all negativity and poke the listner to begin a stirring sensation in their own mentation. The music is not sophisticated or eligant by no means, but has a way about it which will intrige one to listen again and again.

Fresh sound, smart writing.......2003-08-13

Even In Blackouts plays acoustic punk and brings an interesting and fresh approach to the music scene. This album is their first and includes an excellent variety of rhythmic songs & sounds ranging from subdued to irreverent, all smartly written and executed. Writer/guitarist John and vocalist Liz are major talents, and this finely produced album shows off this new band and leaves us wanting more. EiB has toured extensively, and album number two is in production as of summer 2003.

Can't stop listening to this!.......2001-04-24

This is a short but nonetheless solid pop/indie release. Whether or not you're a 764 hero fan, I think you'll enjoy this release. If the first couple of tracks throw you, go a little deeper into this album and I think you'll be pleasantly suprised. Not that you can go all that deep -- it's only about a half an hour long! But with a lot of bands releasing bloated, monotonous albums these days (I won't name any names), it's refreshing to hear something that ends at the right time and doesn't seem like the band should have stopped six tracks ago. And it's not that I don't like the first few tracks, it's just that they're perhaps a little less accessible. John Atkins kind of starts sounding like Wayne Coyne in parts and as much as I like the Lips, that can even annoy me sometimes. Bottom line: This is a good record.

Fans of John Atkins will love this project. While not being all that different from his 764-HERO releases, it does have some songs that deviate from that mold. Great melodies are everywhere and Atkins lets it loose, vocally. All the tracks are solid.

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.

The full title of this CD is "Tom Ardolino Presents: The Makers of Smooth Music (MSR Madness Vol. 2)". MSR Madness Vol. 1 was titled "The Beat of the Traps" and was released on vinyl only. But fear not, 12 of the 16 tracks from The Beat of the Traps are included here, with the remaining 4 tracks included on the MSR Madness Vol. 3 CD. So, what the heck does MSR Madness mean anyway? Well, MSR Records was the leading producer of song-poem records. Okay, so what are song-poems? They are lyrics which have been set to music for a fee. Typically, the service was promoted through small display ads in popular magazines, comic books, tabloids, men's adventure journals and similar publications with a headline reading (essentially) Send in Your Poems - Songwriters Make Thousands of Dollars - Free Evaluation. The term lyrics was avoided because it was assumed potential customers would not understand what the term meant. People who sent their poetry usually received notice by mail that their work was worthy of recording by professional musicians, along with a proposal to do so in exchange for a fee. The melodies were either improvised or recycled and musicians often recorded dozens of songs per recording session using minimal resources, often in one take. The recordings were then duplicated on 45 RPM vinyl singles or compilation LPs with dozens of other songs by amateur lyric writers. Copies were sent to the customer. Promises that they would also be sent to radio stations or music industry executives were rarely if ever kept -- partly because the recordings would not have been taken seriously by professionals. The practice played off the intense desire of unsophisticated people to realize their ambitions of making money from writing popular songs. In the 1990s, some record collectors "rediscovered" these recordings. The main attraction of them is how kooky some of them are. Some these songs have really bizarre lyrics and off-kilter performances. If you enjoy hearing oddball music, you'll probably get a kick out of this CD.

I can't believe I found this on Amazon.com! Years ago I bought this when it was an LP at Merlin's Magic Shop in Disneyland! I played it for background music for my magic act. It got misplaced and I could never find it again. Now all these years later it's back on CD! All the original compositions are here, composed & played by Mr. Verne ("Phantom Of The Organ") Langdon on a massive 4-manual, 34-ranks-of-pipes Wurlitzer/Robert Morton theatre organ - yep, the real thing, not a synthesized organ sound!). Music For Magicians was created primarily for people who perform mysterious, amazing feats of prestidigitation, but this CD is some pretty fine theatre organ work too. I belong to a theatre organ club, so I'm used to hearing the best. Verne Langdon masters the instrument splendidly, and the result is a unique concert of epic proportions! Thank You, Mr. Langdon, for keeping the magic alive! All your original compositions ("Dance Of The Skeletons", "Dante's Inferno", "Carnival Of Souls", "Opening Fanfare","Closing Fanfare", "Schwebethema Fur Princessin Irene", "Spirit Symphony", "Hypnotique", "Pandora's Music Box (Dream Theme"), and "Thurston's Marvels") are all just awesome! Whether you're into magic, or theatre organs, or just plain fun music, you'll enjoy "Music For Magicians". I recommend it highly!
