5 out of 5 stars The most noble voice.......2004-05-28

Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.

FOR A LONG TIME "SONGS OF SPAIN" HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF CLASSICAL, POPULAR, SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS (CHRISTIAN AND SEPHARDIC) SPANISH SONGS. DE LOS ANGELES DEFIES A RIVAL IN THIS GENRE. DE LARROCHA, SORIANO AND ZANETTI PROVIDE UNEQUALED ACCOMPANIEMENTS. THE RECORDINGS ARE SECOND ONLY TO LIFE PERFORMANCES. I UNDERSTAND THAT EMI INTENDS TO TAKE THIS SET OUT OF PUBLICATION. PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN! I JUST PURCHASED MY THIRD SET FROM AMAZON AND I TREASURE IT AS MUCH AS MY FIRST!

the vocal artist of vocal artistsdisplays her absolutely gorgeous voice and musical understanding of spanish feeling with a warmth that is unmatched anywhere.the only thing better was to hear her in person!

5 out of 5 stars A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17

This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

    5 out of 5 stars Completely enthralled.......2005-03-08

This is a delightful disc. If you appreciate the technique of Jordi Savall, and the siren sweet voice of Montserrat Figueras, you will be instantly captivated by their daughter.

In what appears to me to be a very personal project based upon moving poems authored by Miguel Marti i Pol (dedication appears untranslated in Catalan), Ms. Savall is invoking a song tradition of harp playing accompanied by the singer which was long ago lost in all but a couple of cultures. It thrives in the rich cultural Catalan region, as is evidenced by Ms. Savall's own compositions.

You too will submit to her enthralling spell.

    3 out of 5 stars Okay CD.......2005-01-19

This CD is okay, but once you have heard one song you have heard them all. The music gets a little repetitive, and Arianna has a bit of heaviness in her voice that I do not personally like. It is a nice CD, but not one that I would listen to over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning new talent.......2004-09-25

Whilst the classical training shines through, her composition often surprises with its contemporary feel (although she nods to her Catlan roots).

Lovers of harp, and young soprano voice need look no further. The lady has some pair of lungs.

Musically this is ocassionally reminiscent of Andreas Vollenwieder although far more minimalist.. but then she starts singing...and quite simply...WOW!

She's so perfectly in control of her vocal instrument, and she's so pitched. How she manages this but still sounds so relaxed, I will never know. I could go on about her technically, but that would diminish her voice, a thing of great beauty.

Worth the entry for "Bella Terra" alone. I look forward to more of this young woman's work.

    5 out of 5 stars Just beautiful.......2004-04-13

Arianna Savall proves herself to be quite an accomplished singer, composer, and harpist in this new collection of mainly her own compositions. This is not my typical type of music, but I still listen to it constantly, and I bought it as soon as it was available in America. I'm glad that it is once again available, as it was out of stock for a very long time. Savall's pure straight-tone may not appeal to some classical vocal buffs, but as part of the Catalan early music scene ruled by her parents, Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras, straight tone comes natural to her. Her voice is clearer than her mother's and, if somewhat less emotional, it is also more ethereal and her technique is solid. The songs themselves run from Middle Eastern influenced to Catalan folk songs.

Before their expulsion in 1492, the Jews of medieval Spain developed a rich and lively culture, including an exquisite repertory of songs called romanceros--and they kept that repertory alive as they settled in places as diverse as Morocco, Bosnia, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Lovely as the romanceros are, they would have languished as the objects of ethnomusicological studies and might have disappeared altogether, were it not for the efforts of gifted musicians like Hespèrion XX. Jordi Savall and his ensemble, fronted by the unique soprano Montserrat Figueras, just about single-handedly brought those songs to the attention of the modern public with this 1976 recording (now reissued at a bargain price). Disc 1 features a selection of secular music from "Christian" Spain--that is, the courts of Ferdinand and Isabella and the Catholic nobility. The music is elegant and occasionally austere, but Figueras, Savall, and colleagues give the livelier pieces a flavorful swing. Yet disc 2, which features the Sephardic songs, is the real drawing card here. It was in Moorish Spain that Jewish culture flourished, so Hespèrion XX performs the romanceros with Arabic instruments, such as the 'ud (the ancestor of the European lute) and hand drums. These musicians, rechristened Hespèrion XXI in honor of the new century, perform this repertory with more polish now than they did in 1976, but--just as A Feather on the Breath of God did for Hildegard von Bingen--this recording made its own little bit of musical history. --Matthew Westphal

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Like a religious experience.......2007-03-28

This disc is pure magic that transends and defies definition. It is time period music that has been rereleased to capture the magic of the original recording. Each song is amazing. The music creates a mood that is best enjoyed alone ,in private so that your thoughts can be elevated to the point of inspiration. Although I like both discs I prefer the one that features Sephardic Romances over the disc that is Court Music and Songs. Montserrat Figueras angelic voice lends itself to beautiful interpretations of these beautiful songs from the Age before the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. This ancient music is preserved and freshly interpreted under the masterful leadership of Jordi Savall for an authentic recreation. If you have never heard Hesperion XX check this one out, it is fantastic. Recommended for classical music fans who want to hear something different. Once you hear Montserrat Figuerras voice you will feel the inspiration and be hooked on her angelic voice.

    3 out of 5 stars Dissappointing soprano.......2006-02-22

I was excitet buying this CD, expecting the quality of songs equal or better than
Begona Olavide and Carlos Paniagua on MA recodings. The music was fine but singing by soprano Montserrat Figueras was borderline annoying.

5 out of 5 stars A balm for any soul.......2001-01-02

Attempting to review a Savall/Figueras CD is a frustrating task. The arsenal of superlatives is so quickly depleted. Terms like 'matchless' and 'unique' might be used, but lack strict definition. After all, a 'matchless' voice needn't be a good one. Terms like 'divine' or 'angelic' tend to remove Montserrat's singing from the real and human. She's nothing if not human. Having been blessed with watching as well as hearing her perform, vouching for her vitality on a stage is easy. But the superior quality of her voice and presentation is so far above the mundane or common as to become nearly indescribable. Anything less than adulation for her seems to indicate shortcomings in the disk or performer. Neither performance nor disk quality falls short here. That she performs religious songs here simply adds to the power of her impact on the listener. You necessarily hesitate, cease other activity, and, if moved enough, drop to your knees in respect and admiration. Tough to do in a crowded concert hall, but the motivation is there. And this from someone who shunned listening to vocal performances for many years. Dame Kiri was one exception and Argenta another, but the discovery of Figueras was the discovery of a voice without flaw.

Anyone visiting this page must certainly know of Jordi Savall and Hesperion XX. You may, however, have missed the glory of Montserrat Figueras' voice. Make up for that lack right away. The selections available here are pitifully limited, but this CD is as good an introduction as any. Don't hesitate to sit and enjoy this music. The sounds received will be a reward to whatever spiritual sense you possess.

5 out of 5 stars Ten stars if possible..........2000-01-27

I agree completely with Stephan: outstanding performance. Montserrat at her best. If "Si d'amor pena sentis" doesn't bring tears to your eyes, what does?

    3 out of 5 stars Historical re-release.......1999-07-20

Hesperion XX were pioneers in reviving this music, and collectors will value these recordings which first came out in 1976. However most listeners may prefer more recent recordings by Wimmer on Naxos, and Alia Musica on Harmonia Mundi which have digital sound and include Spanish, and occasionally Hebrew, texts and translations.

While it's tempting to call acclaimed diva Denyce Graves's exploration of Latin classical influences a crossover project, that label's pop lightweight connotations don't do justice to the powerful, often uncompromising performances contained herein. Indeed, Graves leans heavily on her collaborators (who include contemporary composers-arrangers-pianists Chucho Valdes, Eliane Elias, and Jose Maria Vitier, as well as arranger-pianist Pablo Ziegler) for both material and stylistic inspiration, creating a collection that's more concerned with true musical synthesis than it is with commercial exploitation. Even the works of Latin classical standard-bearers like Argentina's Carlos Guastavino, Brazil's Villa-Lobos, and Tango master Astor Piazzolla are cast in stark, contemporary arrangements that underscore both Graves's dramatic mezzo voice and the dusky, rhythmically charged dynamics of her quartet of confederates. Cuban great Valdes composed "Romanza de Denyce" especially for the project, further blurring the collection's boundaries between jazz, classical, and pop. If the listener is only familiar with the better-known Latin classical repertoire, this collection may open up some inviting new horizons. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Sensual, Spellbounding, and sheerly Sexy!!!.......2006-07-10

Denyce's warm and sensual Mezzo voice is truly spectacular when she sings the right rep. This latin album is literally right up her lane. She brings a dark color to the pieces that accentuates the text and the instrumentation. The singing is remarkably beautiful and the musicians play with an entrancing groove that makes you feel warm all over. I recommend just listening to this album while sitting outside in a park on a warm and sunny day. I believe that you will see the world completely differently. Way to go Denyce!!!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, bewitching: a real must have.......2003-11-27

This record is exquisite in all its elements: the Voice of Graves -voice with a capital V!-, the selections, the arrangements! For me it would take hours to try to decipher its mystery of seduction. A real must for those who love poetry, music and the marriage of both. A real must for lovers of Latin American music. A real must for the senses.
The first time I listened to the cd, it gave a jolt.
A lot has been said about Graves. She's a wonderful mezzo, with that rich black timbre in her low notes and her lovely lyric high ones. And never mind the language, she knows how to create magic around her.
However, although she's supposed to be the main attraction here, to me the composers steal the show from her.
I've been listening to good music, from opera to streetside, for decades now. And I had never heard anything like Plancha or Plomada, by Guastavino. They're simply astounding.
The Cubans come out very well. Their songs are simply irressistible. They own the gift of melody and harmony. Soledad is unforgettable.
But what haunts me the most is Milonga sin palabras. What a piece of art!

4 out of 5 stars Una voz opulenta.......2003-01-31

The talent-reality-show craze hasn't been lost on Latino record execs looking to make another Idol-size splash on U.S. soil--en espanol. Enter Anais, the Bronx-raised, Dominican-born beauty who was crooning in karaoke bars before winning the second season of Univision's Objetivo Fama. Her debut disc, Asi Soy Yo, arrives just shy of a year after her big win, and it packs an impressive punch. It's a lush, something-for-everyone affair, full of tropical, urban and regional rhythms. The omnipresent drone of reggaeton accents several songs ("Atrapada," "Sexo, Sexo," "Suelta"), but Anais proves equally adept at the romantic balladry of such key tracks as "Estoy Con El y Pienso en Ti" and "Estar Contigo." Her deep, creamy voice plays to the drama of each song's lyrics without completely jumping overboard. Smash hit "Lo Que Son Las Cosas" (originally recorded by Ednita Nazario) takes up almost one-third of the album via a slew of mixes: ballad, reggaeton, salsa, and duranguense, featured as a duet with Alacranes Musical. Each works in its own way and proves a nice showcase for Anais' chameleon-like charisma. --Joey Guerra

Anais was apparently on the show Objectivo Fama though I never personally saw it I did hear the Reggaeton mix of "Lo Que Son Las Cosas" on the radio. Granted, they did go a bit overboard with the number of remixes to that particular song, there are quite a few songs that I love such as "Atrapada" (I actually prefer the remix on that one as well) and "Suelta". Her slower songs aren't as good but she does have a very strong and unique voice.

3 out of 5 stars El futuro de Divas de Latina.......2006-06-14

Anais permanece verdadero a ella misma.

    3 out of 5 stars Great Reggaeton.......2006-05-12

I enjoy the reggaton songs on this album, but the ballad songs do absolutely nothing for me. She does have a wonderful strong voice, but to see people comparing her to Christina and Beyonce, sorry, but they were made for ballads and Shakira is in a totally different ballgame herself. You can't compare her style (meaning Shakira) because no one else has her style which is why she is so successful. If you are a reggaton fan, I think you will her songs and I hope she continues to make more albums geared towards that genre of music and upbeat latin. I don't enjoy her voice at all in ballad form.

5 out of 5 stars i Agree she is the best .......2006-05-06

she is a wonderful giel and the has a amazing boys better that beyonce and christina (sorry but it's true) and ednita nazario sucks.

      3 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-03-09

Delightful album in a small way. A good companion to her Music of the Italian Renaissance (which I thought had a litle more oomph).

Just listen to the samples. Shirley Rumsey is truly gifted.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD at any price.......2001-06-04

This is one of my favorite CDs, out of a large collection of early vocal music. Shirley Rumsey has a wonderfully pure and clear voice, which compliments the elegant simplicity of the arrangements (single lute and voice). Certainly, this is not likely to be absolutely true to the original -- some of the more lively songs are still performed in a measured, almost somber tone. Yet this does not take away from the quality of the CD as a whole. There are numerous recordings of many of the same pieces, each with its own merits, and this interpretation is certainly one worth owning -- certainly at this price!

      4 out of 5 stars Pleasant music.......2001-02-11

I liked the music, the songs, and the voice. I give it 4 stars because of the slight English accent that the singer has (we're talking about Spanish songs!)

      3 out of 5 stars Accomplished one-woman show.......1999-07-11

Shirley Rumsey accompanies her singing with accomplished lute playing, and gives a good cross-section of Spanish renaissance solo pieces. Some of this material will probably be familiar to some listeners from the many programmes of Spanish solo music featuring Montserrat Figueras, and won't be surprised to hear that Rumsey's singing lacks the genuine Spanish feel of Figueras - but then Figueras doesn't accompany herself! This is Rumsey's second disc for Naxos and a companion to her equally good Italian Renaissance disc (Naxos 550615).

While we are on the subject, credit is due to Naxos for making this kind of repertoire available at budget price and anyone who likes this will also enjoy these releases:
