Album Description

Following the critical success of Tristeza's third full-length "A Colores", the group gathered in San Diego and Tijuana to put together this audio/visual release of new and exclusive songs. The nine brand new audio tracks on the CD finds Tristeza in an ambient haze rolling along dubbed out bass-lines and abstract compositions. The DVD contains a 30 minute handmade tour film exploring Tristeza's psychedelic vision based on lonely hours traveling across the U.S., Japan and Mexico. The DVD also contains a bonus video for "Stumble On Air" from the 'A Colores' full-length."

Interesting .......2007-03-06

Tristeza are/was a great band. Spine and Sensory was brilliant, and Dream Signals was rather stunning, yet verging a bit too close to New Age territory. I just have to say that although I own and enjoy A Colores, I think the band lost its edge when Lavalle left. The Album Leaf is boring and uninspired sounding to me. He should have stayed with Tristeza. The loss of his guitar and songwriting skills are very apparent on these newer releases. There is no more "punch" like the group had on Spine and Sensory. It's almost as if the band has gone too soft. I do like their album covers, however, very cool.

Potent Material.......2006-10-15

If you prefer quality over quantity you'll agree that half an hour of raw, melodic, and rythmically brilliant material is far better than an hour and a half of filler. Not a bad song on this one, however skip it if you seek a lengthy album of polished fluff ...and good riddance to Jim LaValle by the way, Tristeza's best works have been accomplished in his absence!

Meloncholy, and a little heart broken; as much as I don't want to admit it, I was let down by Tristeza. I was incredibly uplifted and unbelievably stunned by the beauty and melodic intesity of "A Colores," but then, once the much anticipated "En Nuestro Desafio" was revealed...suddenly, I'm wondering what the heck is going on. Nothing but droning, short spurts of would be greatness, held back genius. The bonus DVD was momentarily exciting, but, unfortunately, I expected a enlightening documentary but instead received a strange concoction of blurry, droning landscapes viewed through the car window. I must not be on the same page. I thought Tristeza had greatly evolved from their predecessors of "Dream Signals in Full Circles" and "Spine and Sensory." Both were great warm-up albums that led to "A Colores" as a charming gold medal. There was nothing left but to await the next plateau. I feel they've gone backwards or perhaps, skewed into an alternate galaxy that is, perhaps, too far out into the unknown for such enthusiastic fans anticipating post-rock glory. "A Colores" is a masterpiece and with "En Nuestro Desafio" I'm left scratching my head. I might not be getting it. Then again, maybe that is the strange thrill and beauty of a band like Tristeza. They don't want to be grouped or fully understood. This new album really embraces the psychedelia and abandons the post-rock edge that mesmorized me in "A Colores." Jimmy Lavalle must have gotten really comfortable with his somber side project "The Album Leaf"...doing his poorly executed "Sigur Ros" thing, and forgot about Tristeza. It saddens me. I would recommened that new fans investigate the first three albums and then look at "En Nuestro Desafio" to see how a great thing drastically plummeted. Post-rockers, run. Maybe this is a joke, an early Halloween thing and soon, the real Tristeza will emerge. I'll say this album is "okay" with a few promising songs because I'm still holding on to the good times.

Interesting and thoughtful compositions give lyrical insights that are very Brazilian. Sparer than Bachianas Brasilieras but quite melodious. I've been searching for more Clovis and Quinteto Paraiba. Also found on the equally lyrical soundtrack to Central do Brasil (Central Station).

Martel has richness for Latin American songs.......2005-08-30

In this recording of unusual South American art song repertoire, Canadian soprano Agathe Martel has a richness of sound that she uses expressively throughout. More importantly, she uses it musically, changing her tone to express the music -- at exactly the right moment! Fellow Canadian pianist Marc Bourdeau's clarity of musical ideas, sense of touch and rhythmic finesse show him to be a fine musician with an especially subtle sense of rubato. 
The songs of Argentine composer Guastavino are the "easy listening" of the album, but some are particularly beautiful. I loved the spicy harmonic language in those of the Brazilian Camargo Guarnieri. Of those by the Barizilian Alberto Ginastera, "Cancion al arbol del olvido" is a beautiful song in every way! It's very original while seeming traditional. Another Brazilian, Carlos Lopz Buchardois is very traditional, but "Oye mi llanto" is a tender and  touching lament, and Martel and Boudreau express it beautifully. The songs of Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos are easily the best-written. And though I like the final "Samba classica," despite its terrible text," I loved "Serenata" the most of any song on the CD. It's very much in the grand manner, and with Martel's expressiveness, it's absolutely gorgeous!
I may well wear this CD out!

A great orchestral cello sound!.......2001-04-19

The first time I heard this CD I was deeply impressed by the extraordinary fluence of the sound, a mercurial sonority of this beautiful cello octet, Conjunto Iberico conducted by Elias Arizcúren! The repertoire of this CD includes the two more important composers of Brazil in the XX. Century: Villa-Lobos and Marlos Nobre. The Bachianas by Lobos are very known indeed, so the big interest of this CD is the revelation of a great composer of our time: MARLOS NOBRE.His "Three black songs", "3 songs from Beiramar" and "Oda to Garcia Lorca" for soprano and celli octet are masterpieces of our time,full of emotion,coerence, colors, rhythms, all and all expressed by a solid craftmanship. Nobre has the genius of Dallapiccola and the violonce of Ginastera, togheter with a invention that it is his own. This is the BEST CELLO ENSEMBLE RECORDING I had ever heard!
