5 out of 5 stars A Great Find!.......2004-08-02

These are wonderful cds. They include Andres Segovia,Julian Bream, John Williams, Presti/Lagoya and Pepe Romero among other guitarist's. This two cd set has a rare performance of Segovia with the "Symphony Of The Air"performing Boccherini's "Cello Concerto in D". John Williams performing Bach's "Cello Suite In D" at seventeen years old. Also Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya performing Debussy's "Clair de Lune" and Granado's "Spanish Dance No.2 The Oriental". Presti/Lagoya's music has long been out of print and to the best of my knowledge this is the first time their music has been available on cd.These cd's have over 2 and a half hours of music and are well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars The most noble voice.......2004-05-28

Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.

5 out of 5 stars PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN.......2002-01-08

FOR A LONG TIME "SONGS OF SPAIN" HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF CLASSICAL, POPULAR, SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS (CHRISTIAN AND SEPHARDIC) SPANISH SONGS. DE LOS ANGELES DEFIES A RIVAL IN THIS GENRE. DE LARROCHA, SORIANO AND ZANETTI PROVIDE UNEQUALED ACCOMPANIEMENTS. THE RECORDINGS ARE SECOND ONLY TO LIFE PERFORMANCES. I UNDERSTAND THAT EMI INTENDS TO TAKE THIS SET OUT OF PUBLICATION. PURCHASE THIS JEWEL WHILE YOU CAN! I JUST PURCHASED MY THIRD SET FROM AMAZON AND I TREASURE IT AS MUCH AS MY FIRST!

5 out of 5 stars luminous artistry from a genius.......2000-12-26

the vocal artist of vocal artistsdisplays her absolutely gorgeous voice and musical understanding of spanish feeling with a warmth that is unmatched anywhere.the only thing better was to hear her in person!

5 out of 5 stars A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17

This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

5 out of 5 stars A superb interpretation of Llobet's music.......2006-10-30

I had come across L. Micheli almost accidentally by watching one of the Guitar Foundation of America videos when I was amazed by the breathtaking performance of the Variaciones sobre un tema de Sor! This CD is worth every penny. I would also recommend the M Castelnuovo Tedesco one as well. Very expressive, accurate, clean performance - I had the feeling I am watching Glenn Gould playing guitar.

5 out of 5 stars EXCITING MUSIC.......2006-03-25

I have found this CD at the Naxos website catalogue.I was just looking around the CD's and the word LLOBET got my attention because it was hard to find a complete collection of the composer.I was lucky that it caught my attention!
Let's come to the inside of it.It has all kind of music forms composed by llobet such as;Catalan Folksongs,Preludes,Folksongs,Etudes,Mazurkas,Romanzas and even Variations which I liked most. They have really been arranged nicely and the Llobet himself composed beautifuly(they say Llobet opened a new period for the guitar music at the early 1900's; they are right.)
You can't find most of the pieces on other CD's they are really "rare" pieces and the affordible price makes the CD even more nice.
Most of the tracks are short about 1 or 2 minutes but the total playing time is OK that means there's a lot of track in it(41 tracks).
What about the guitarist.Lorenzo Micheli.I know much guitarist but I have heard Micheli with this CD.It's good to be me that I heard Micheli. He plays the guitar with his soul,so sweet guitar really. And also the technique is one of the factors that makes this CD amazing because without a good technique you can't hand over most of the tracks such as Repuesta.
It is certain that this music gives us a joy and "also" I didn't know Llobet composed such great works I means the listener gets informed about it.
1)GOOD COLLECTION
2)PRICE
3)GOOD GUITAR PLAYING
4)EXCITING AND ORIGINAL WORKS FOR GUITAR
...they are the reasons you should buy this CD.

Album Description

Following on the enormous success of her first recording for CBC RECORDS - Joyous Light (CBC SMCD 5215) - the stunning young Canadian lyric soprano ISABEL BAYRAKDARIAN turns her attention to the seductive colours and rhythms of Spain and Latin America. The centre piece of this recording is the vocal evergreen, Bachianas Brasileiras # 5 for soprano and eight cellos by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. After winning the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions in 1997, Isabel (who is of Armenian descent) has gone on to make debuts with such international companies as the Metropolitan Opera (New York), Lyric Opera of Chicago, Paris Opera and La Scala (Milan), Semperoper (Dresden) and the Canadian Opera Company (Toronto).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Isabel's voice is enchanting!.......2006-10-12

I had never heard of Isabel Bayrakdarian before. I was looking for a copy of Obradors' "Chiquitita la Novia" and happened to come upon this cd. Am I glad I bought it, in fact, I'm wearing it out. Her voice is like a bright
sunlight. Her interpretations are exquisite. My favorite on the recording is Granados' "La Maja y el Ruisenor".
Brava Isabel!

5 out of 5 stars A real diamond!.......2006-04-13

I heard this voice first time on CBC Radio - from a concert in Toronto. It was magical! Soon after, I had a chance to listen to her in recital and this was an EVENT! Over two thousand people in the concert hall were holding their breath for two hours and it seemed that the hall itself became small and cozy. It was indeed a contact soul to soul.
Isabel has a rare talent that combines beautiful tone, clarity and unbelievable fluidity of her voice, intelligent thinking, good sensitive heart and generous nature. You believe every intonation, every nuance. She is always authentic, always noble and her expressivity is never forced, emotions are never overacted.
This CD captures well her magic voice. And God, she is amazing in pianissimos! That's why to me, the Lullaby by Xavier Montsalvatge with its softness and warmth is the highlight of this recording.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing amazing stuff.......2004-10-07

The only reason I didn't give this disc five stars is because I'm not too crazy about Grandos' "Tonadillas." They aren't bad, but they're an incredibly weak opening group and the piano is a bit bouncy and boppy when compared to the more somber numbers on this disc with the cello ensemble.

I first fell in love with Bayrakdarian's voice on the CD "Joyous Light," a collection of Armenian liturgical music arranged for soprano and orchestra (some of it just solo voice.) This disc intrigued me because of her incredible voice and the somewhat off the beaten path repertoire & instrumentation (soprano, piano & cello ensemble!?!) I was happy to see a young, amazing talent NOT do a disc of Italian or German arias. Her CDs definately seem to explore the lesser known repertoire and that's to be commended, because we get to hear a stellar voice bring some real gems to light. Interesting that soprano's solo disc includes an instrumental piece, but it fits in nicely and is certainly appreciated by this listener.

The first two of the Rodrigo madrigales are arrestingly beautiful. The disc as a whole is sublime. She's definately one to watch. I can't think of another soprano I'd rather hear these days than Bayrakdarian. I'm flying back to my hometown next year to her in concert. It's months & months away and I can't think of another performance anytime soon that I'm looking this forward to.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Program Beautifully Performed.......2003-11-21

There's been a lot of buzz lately about a young soprano just emerging up in Canada, a striking-looking young woman still in her twenties, winner of the Met Auditions, who has a burgeoning career in opera and recital. Her name is Isabel Bayrakdarian, member of an Armenian family who immigrated to Canada in 1989. She apparently had a nice untrained voice but didn't begin training professionally until 1993; meanwhile she had gotten a degree in biomedical engineering. But only four years later she won the Met Auditions and a couple of years later recorded a CD of seemingly esoteric Armenian songs that became a runaway best-seller in Canada. She made her Metropolitan début in 2002 in the role of Catherine in William Bolcom's 'A View from the Bridge.' This CD is a recording of a program that had been presented on CBC Radio and featuring pianist James Parker, himself a virtuoso with a solo career, and ten Toronto cellists led by cello soloist and Canadian Symphony principal, Bryan Epperson. And all of it in music by Hispanic composers.

First, the program is well-constructed, alternating vocal/piano music with vocal/cello ensemble music, with cello ensemble music. Timbres are changed often enough that one's ear does not tire. Second, every bit of the program is superbly performed. Pride of place must be given to Miss Bayrakdarian, whose voice is crystalline and yet imbued with a womanly sensuality that well serves the alternately sultry and kittenish Spanish music present here. She sings Granados's delicious 'Four Tonadillas' with the kind of charm that I thought only a native Spaniard could bring to it. She negotiates the agréments and their subtle alterations of intonation so typical of Spanish singing with complete mastery. Late in the program she performs, with the cello ensemble, the ever-popular Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 as well as I've ever heard it. She also inhabits the sung version of Granados's 'La Maja y el Ruiseñor' ('The Maiden and the Nightingale') arranged for the opera he made from his piano suite 'Goyescas.'

The cello group plays Pablo Casals's arrangement of the Catalan Christmas carol, 'El Cant dels Ocells' ('The Song of the Birds'). And they lend a hand in Joaquin Rodrigo's 'Cuatro madrigales amatorios' ('Four Love Madrigals'), with cello ensemble accompaniment arranged (as in others here recorded) by Peter Tiefenbach. I particularly liked the interplay of teasing soprano and sporty cellos in 'Vos me matásteis' ('I die for love of you'), the second of this set, which is then followed by a bang-up performance of the familiar, catchy 'De los álamos vengo, madre' ('I've been down by the poplars, mother').

Fernando Obradors wrote wonderful songs that occasionally get sung by non-Spanish singers--I remember once being entranced by Elly Ameling singing the set recorded here by Bayrakdarian with superb assistance from pianist Parker, 'Canciones clásicas españolas' ('Classic Spanish Songs'). And I must say that at times I hear a hint of Ameling in Bayrakdarian's voice, something I call 'a smile in the voice.' This set is followed by an expert arrangmement, this time by Claude Kenneson, of Manuel de Falla's 'Suite populaire espagnole' that employs the cello ensemble (with some melting solo work by Epperson, their leader) playing three all-instrumental pieces and then accompanying Bayrakdarian in three of the six songs.

The CD is rounded out by Xavier Montsalatge's Lullaby from 'Cinco canciones negras,' the aforementioned Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, and then the song that gives this album its title, Jayme Ovalle's 'Azulão' ('Bluebird'). The latter uses all the forces available here--soprano, pianist, cellists--in a haunting lament: 'Go bluebird, bluebird, companion of mine, go! Go see my faithless love.'

I cannot praise this issue highly enough. Ms Bayradkarian's voice is world-class and she sings with great musicality and feeling. Her accompanists are flawless. The recorded sound is quite good. The unattributed notes are very helpful. There are full translations of all the sung texts.

Legendary soprano Rosa Ponselle recalled these sessions taped by RCA in her Baltimore home as the only time she enjoyed making records. Fourteen years after her abrupt retirement from opera, her voluptuous instrument (ruby red in the '39 Victors and now tinged with purple) soars to better advantage in the amplitude of her spacious music room than within the cramped confines of the recording studio. Whether in Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Mozart, or Tosti songs, or chestnuts like "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes," the vocalism is always informed by Ponselle's musical intelligence and sense of style. Romophone brings together all the material from these home sessions, including 75 minutes of music not issued by RCA, plus a promotional interview that reveals a warm, down-to-earth persona quite different from your typical diva stereotype. Ponselle fans need no encouragement to acquire this set. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Revealing.......2004-12-28

It must be remembered when approaching these recordings that we are not hearing the Ponselle of the Met singing her great roles, we are hearing the Ponselle of retirement, and a long retirement. She seems to have left her career right at its height, and for whatever reasons. She was not idle, but was active in the world of opera in other ways (including working with many now famous singers when they were students: Sherryl Milnes, Beverly Sills just to name two). She approached her music with the vibrancy of her time, which is often at odds with how we would sing such things today (the Mozart aria for Cherubino for example). However, even though we hear a voice that has now started to show wear, not from oversinging, but rather from not being used all that often and from age, we are not listening to someone who has "lost it all." Everything that made her great is still there for us to enjoy and wish we could experience. Her range is no longer seamless as it was during her active singing career (a thing she was noted for), but her legato is a wonder to behold, as it was during her most active singing years. It is no wonder that singing teacher tell students to listen to her recordings to learn what legato is all about (and as a result, Ponselle is one of the most immitated singers in history, but at no time has anyone ever captured her sound, her quality, her depth of tone, her ring, her anything; people may try to immitate the essence of her singing by copying what they hear -- even the great Maria Callas' interpretations in La Vesta sound like haunting echos of Ponselle -- but what was the depth of her interpretations or of her voice no one has ever come close to matching). Her chest notes are raw at times, but they do not ruin the music in any way. Her top notes (which always put terror into her heart, but for the life of me, after listening to all her recordings available, I cannot figure out why -- even after reading her story of why the High C in Aida scared her so much --- her high notes were extremely secure, even a high D flat in the trovatore arias, no strain is evident at any time, not ever!), well, her top notes are at time frayed and not centered as they were. Still, once again, that is not a bother. It is evident that at times she has to "work rather noticeably" to produce her top notes, but there again, we are not offended by what we hear.

What we do experience, and mostly because we have no arias from her great roles to listen to, is the Ponselle way with a song. She just seemed to embrace a song and make it her own. Her interpretation may be enjoyable to you, you may find other singers you like better, but her interpretation is NEVER common and without validity. Each piece is truly her own stamped completely with her emotional and vocal understanding of the text and the music.

That brings me to the diction part of the recording. Her RRRRRR (rolled R, or tongue trill by some) is very pronounced and now days may be seen as tasteless. However, it was the way things were sung then, and not just in Italian (even English actors rolled their R's beyond belief at that time). Personally, the well pronouced rolled R has never bothered me whatever, and in a way, I expect to hear it when singers are singing opera. It is so played down now days, one is sometimes completely unaware an R was even said. Ponselle's diction is incredible, and I don't just say that. Each and every word is completely understandable, even in English (which is crystle clear). It seems that was a common trait back in her day, for in many recordings of that time and earlier that I have the singers are exceptionally clear with their diction (even the Met manager, former singer, Edward Johnson is so clear while singing English -- a collection of Canadian songs -- one is stunned that the poor recordings quality didn't just eat up the words). Perhaps such singers as Renee Flemming and all the other greats of today should play some Ponselle recordings and learn what diction is all about.

These recordings, though made long after her retirement, are still a great testiment as to what she was like as a singer, for they give us all the greatness that was hers. It makes people like me, who were born after she retired (though quite a while before she died, as I remember her well on live from the met broadcasts on the radio Saturday afternoons) wish we could go back in time and hear some real singing.

In addition to the music, we have some interviews with Ruby Mercer, which are a real delight to listen to. No wonder people like Sills have nothing but great memories working with Ponselle. She is truly well grounded. She knows her contribution to the world of music for exactly what it is. There is no false modesty, nor is there any "high mindedness about self." We have a very down to earth person talking about things, even why she chose some of the music she did, in a very down to earth way.

I recommend the set to anyone who loves to hear great singing, even if it would have more appeal to collectors than average people. It is well recorded, and the sound is excellent. It is a treasure to have on any record shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Villa Pace Recordings.......2003-05-15

This recording is a must for anyone who loves to hear art songs sung incredibly. Aside from Rosa Ponselle's voice being arguably one of the most beatiful, distictive, incredible sounding voices (so big that it was troublesome to record), the fact that she is also one of the greatest vocal artists in the world is also evident. Although most of the songs were recoreded when her voice wasn't as capable of stunning high high C's (there wasn't any Aida aria's on this one), her musicality, ability to act with her voice, and her use of language is breath-taking. Especially nice, is her french, it's so clear and clean, yet doesn't sound constricted or bothersome. The best track is the second lower version of "When I have sung my Songs". It is truly phenomenal, and her singing of this piece is a true testament to what this woman was capable of. Also her "o del mio amato ben" some of the most dramatically genuine singing I 've heard. Buy this CD if you want to hear some real singing and one of the greatest voices of the 20th century.

3 out of 5 stars Nice repertory and singing, but give the girl some castanets.......2002-12-25

This recital was a mixed blessing. The program is well chosen. The music is exciting and alluring, accessible yet rare enough to be attractive to travelers along the byways of song. The performances are beautiful and thoughtful. Fink's tone is consistently attractive, her technique and ornamentation are impressive. But there are essential Spanish elements missing. Rhythms are not accented, with scarcely any rubato in evidence. She does not bite into her consonants or relish the typical Spanish sounds like "ll," "j," and "y." Part of the problem is in the foursquare playing of Roger Vignoles on the piano. In any case, the songs are captivating and Bernarda Fink's expressiveness is beautiful but undermined by this lack of flair. Though less effective than her debut art song recorded of Schumann Lieder on harmonia mundi, this remains nonetheless a record of lasting appeal.

The program is of love songs offered from the perspective of man, woman, and third person. This music is so rarely heard and worth hearing as to make the disc self-recommending. Spanish composers lean more toward collections than narrative cycles, and here we have some collections presented in full and some excerpted. Spanish art song conveys a rich bittersweetness, stretching the ear with tangy chromaticisms and veiled harmonies, their unsettling effect kept within bounds by recognizable rhythms, modulations, melismas, and other characteristic flourishes. Refined, yes, but never too distant from its popular variants.

The Granados collection that begin the disk has the first 5 songs rather centered on the pains of love, from different angles: deeply sympathetic narrator, a girl in the torments of young love, one man rueful, another wry and cynical. The last 2 songs move into more sanguine areas of the heart, the 6th a lighthearted folksong admiring young beauties at work, the 7th an exuberant transport in rhythms alternately propulsive and swaying. The Granados mini-cycle "La maja dolorosa" that follows is the best-known item in the program. Portraying three different women in grief, or perhaps a progression of grief in the same woman, the first song represents stark betrayal and disbelief; the second emerges somewhat, still distraught, dispossessed, drenched in desolate desire; in the third, bereavement gives way to a proud nostalgia.

The Rodrigo selection is astute: "Pastorcito santo" a haunting, gently lilting Christmas carol, "Coplillas de Belén" another carol with jazzy rhythms imparting the impatient joy of Christmas morning. "Por mayo era" starts with the heat of the day underscored by piano arpeggios (shifting neatly to depict a nightingale). The fullness of the scene is contrasted with the singer's desolation in the second verse, where the arpeggios now become fractured and acerbic. "Adele" is pure folksong, sad and plain in regard of the girl's demise for love, free of harmonic twists and other commentary. The set concludes with the vibrant and soaring "Cancion del Duero," with rustic images elevated by the rapture of joyous and world-embracing love, building to a thrilling final verse and a rousing sendoff.

The 3 Nin songs, while enjoyable, are more self-conscious in execution and the music a tad more bombastic. His arrangement of "El Vito" is too dense, not nearly as fun as Obridors's. "El pano murciano," about setting a kiss in silver, after a rather excessive piano introduction, does give into the simple whimsy of the verses.

The program ends with music of the singer's homeland, Argentina. Guastavino is very sentimental: "La rosa y el sauce" ("The Rose and the Willow") is a pensive elegy. "Cita" offers a charming scene of a lazy tryst. "La palomita" ("Little Dove") is in antique style. These are united expressively in a straightforward musical style. Ginastera is represented by a sensuous, sad tango "Canción al arbol del olvido" ("The Tree of Forgetting") and a collection of 5 popular songs. "Chacarera" is notable for its dense rhythms. "Triste" starts with slow arpeggios again depicting a dry landscape of the soul, the blankness pierced by the singer's stricken cries of "Ah!" "Arroró" is a lovely lullaby, with sharp insomniac harmonies and the long hours tolling in the piano layer. Ginastera's accompiments are restrained but inventive.

Though by rights this music ought to be close to home for her, what I found lacking here were musical traits that are distinctly Spanish -- the rhythmic verve, the bite of the consonants -- elements that would have given her performances greater personality. This is especially noticeable in the faster songs, where words are less distinguishable because of this weakness and accentuation of individual words doesn't come through. Berganza and De Los Angeles both have it -- you can compare their versions of "La maja dolorosa". Berganza's is on a 2-disk set on DG, De Los Angeles in a 4-disk compilation on EMI. Native qualities of De Los Angeles's voice, the inimitable blend of sweetness and sadness, give her an advantage in these songs. Her performance of the first features cor anglais accompaniment along with the piano, deepening the sorrowful effect. With this additional support, DLA takes a slower tempo resting on sturdy chest tones. The third song is underpinned by tentative staccato in the piano as the bereaved avows feelings and memories. Berganza is more confessional, but at times a tad lugubrious. Both have a piquancy to their voice that Fink lacks here. Even Margaret Price on an Orfeo disk of French and Spanish songs sounds no less authentic.

The elements of rhythm and enunciation are even more decisive in comparing DLA's performance of 6 of the 7 Granados songs, recorded live in 1971 with De Larrocha at the piano delivering more robust sound. Though DLA is less secure tonally throughout, her performances have a radiance that Fink's lack. "Mañana era" is very delicate with more sadness in the voice; "Mira que soy niña" has crispness of rhythm; "Gracia mia" dances, the rapid-fire phrases maintaining a contour that Fink loses. Though both singers have facility in ornamentation, De Los Angeles is more successful thank Fink because her placement and pacing are better.
