In an era when pop nihilism fulfilled its dark promise all too regularly, Pearl Jam not only survived, but thrived to become one of rock's greatest bands. This 33-track double-disc career retrospective documents the arc of a career that went from arena and radio triumphs in the early 90's (while Nirvana's promise imploded in the wake of hype, Pearl Jam's crowd-pleasing fame only burgeoned) to the uncompromising, core audience-focused tack that carried the band into the 21st century. Shrewdly compiled by the band into an "Up" disc that chronicles the band's driving, Stone Gossard-Mike McCready fueled hard rock dramatics (including such early career landmarks as "Jeremy," "Alive" and "Even Flow" alongside more aggressive fare like "Go" and "Spin the Black Circle") and a "Down" side that focuses more on Eddie Vedder's brooding, often dark ballads ("Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town," "Yellow Ledbetter," their unlikely hit cover of the oldie "Last Kiss"), it's a collection that underscores both the band's range and musical integrity. Though centered largely on the band's pre-Vitalogy studio era and containing no new material, longtime producer/collaborator Brendan O'Brien contributes remixes of "Once," "Alive" and "Black" that offer new insights on the familiar, while non-album tracks like "Man of the Hour" and "State of Love and Trust" considerably enhance the overall listening perspective here. --Jerry McCulley

This IS the early 90s sound. Between Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Sonic Youth grunge would never have made it. A great CD for any collection

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2007-06-27

If you're like me, you bought Ten and then never really got into Pearl Jam much afterwards. If that sounds about right, then this compilation is for you. It had everything I was looking for and more.

4 out of 5 stars good band.......2007-03-09

My review is short and simple. This CD is worth the money. So pay up and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars It came fast and i perfect condition.......2007-02-16

My CD came on time and in perfect condition.

4 out of 5 stars Very well-compiled collection.......2007-02-16

I bought this 2CD set upon its release in December 2004 because I had wanted to collect Pearl Jam songs I'd liked back in the 1990's, and up to that point, I owned none of their music. Many of the hits on here weren't played on the radio stations I was listening to at the time, so a lot of this music was new to me. I'm rating this 4 stars because it is a well-compiled collection of 33 songs that should appeal to non-core fans like myself who don't own all of Pearl Jam's studio albums, but who like many of their songs. Pearl Jam is a great rock band, they write intelligent lyrical songs, and the guitar, bass and drum players create thunderous power on many of their strong songs.

Best songs in my opinion: Immortality, I Got ID, Given To Fly, Not For You, I Am Mine, Even Flow, Once, and especially the awesome song Jeremy - one of the most powerful songs of the decade and despite its chilling subject matter, my favourite song of theirs .

Electrifying performers and pure-pop songwriters of the highest order, Toronto's Barenaked Ladies have emerged over a decade as that strangest of beasts. They'll never land a dishy cover story in Mojo Magazine, but as they reflect on those ribald years between 1991 and 2001, the five can allow themselves wry smiles, knowing that sometimes, just sometimes, the cream rises to the top. In addition to familiar radio staples such as "Pinch Me," "The Old Apartment," "Jane," "Alternative Girlfriend," and the ubiquitous "One Week," there's a trump card on All Their Greatest Hits that will prove irresistible to completists: the Ladies' buttery, acoustic version of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time." Recorded eons ago for a Cockburn tribute disc that almost immediately went out of print, the song has until now been a rare and highly coveted collector's item. Two news songs--"Thanks That Was Fun" and "It's Only Me (The Wizard of Magicland)"--were recorded specifically for this collection, while two others ("Brian Wilson" and "What a Good Boy") are captured live. But what really brings this album home is, ironically, "If I Had $1,000,000." One of their very first hits cut as the Ladies were learning to dovetail their so-called "acoustic hip-hop" into slicker pop sensibilities, "$1,000,000"--a simple knock-kneed love song with harmonies so tight they're practically braided--is a snapshot of a band with all the pieces in place just as the planets were about to align. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-12

We love all the Barenaked Ladies songs! This is a repurchase of the disc after we lost the first one and couldn't live without it.

5 out of 5 stars Musical SUNSHINE Baby!!.......2007-03-14

Okay, so, if we were in a western, I wouldn't exactly be quick on the draw, but personally, I like getting to things in my own sweet time.
Six years (?) after the fact, the SpiritWorld is graced with this FANTASTIC cd-of 19 tracks, thank you very much-GET IT NOW!!
I was only familiar with the high inducing 'Falling For The First Time' track that's on the Malcolm in the Middle soundtrack, and only vaguely familiar with a few of the others, so I come to this as a newbie and I LOVE IT!!
Their quirky loquacious lyrics are funny, smart, smiley, honest and paranoid, the music is played with heart, it's beautiful and even the slower tracks you can snap to. A couple of the tracks are live versions which makes a nice change to the polished studio feel and it's sweet because you can hear the fans singing along in the background.
I can honestly say there's not a Homer's favorite brand of beer track on here; they're all FABOO, and some that are the faboo-est include the aforementioned Falling..., If I Had $1000000 and the spectacular Pinch Me.
I'd like to buy a doll house, use a shrinkomatic on these guys and have them play for me every time I opened the door. Or we could all just live together. I am so getting their entire back catalog and all their new and future ones, which, considering I'm more of a soundtracks girl, is saying a lot.
Lyrics aren't included in the booklet, but you do get a funny little story behind each song, and besides, they sing clearly enough, and you won't be able to stop playing it either, so you'll pick up on the words.
Bottom line: I HIGHLY recommend this, especially if you have a red cadillac and are going for a road-trip across America. Even just in your head. It's like pure musical sunshine.

5 out of 5 stars A great album filled with hits at every turn!.......2007-02-23

I purchased this album after hearing only "One Week" and "If I had 1000000 dollars" from the radio. The two give you a taste of the wacky and zany streak that touches several of their songs, including the irreverant "Be My Yoko Ono." But they show a softer and more reflective side with tracks like "Call and Answer" as well. The variety of tracks is impresive.

As a rule, "best of" compilations tend to be littered with bad songs, but BNL really nailed it with this fantastic collection of songs. If you've heard and enjoyed any of their music, you owe it to yourself to check this one out!

3 out of 5 stars Norms One.......2007-01-20

There is some good with bad along with this review. I felt previous reviews had recommended highly, but it did not live up to expectations. Having written that - there were some good tracks.

5 out of 5 stars It's Barenaked Ladies, how could you go wrong!.......2007-01-03

I am a fan of the BNL, and this CD did not disappoint.

Inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel of the same name, The Secret Garden was set apart from the beginning by the composition of its creative team. Not many Broadway shows can boast a female composer (Lucy Simon), director (Susan H. Schulman), librettist/lyricist (Marsha Norman), and producer/set designer (Heidi Landesman)--not to mention an 11-year old (Daisy Eagan) in the lead. This story of a little girl who helps her grieving uncle and sickly cousin regain a taste for life is a delicate, lovely achievement. Steeped in moody Victoriana, it should enchant those who enjoy a more understated style of musical theater. The great cast includes Mandy Patinkin, Rebecca Luker as his dead wife Lily's ghost, and the perenially underrated Alison Fraser. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Secret Garden is Fantastic.......2007-07-15

This musical is one of my very favourites and I highly reccommend this recording both to lovers of the show or anyone looking to enjoy a new musical. The song selection provides a good picture of the story, with several bits of scenes and libretto. Beautiful cd.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful soundtrack!.......2007-05-31

I recently read the book (The Secret Garden) to my 7-year-old daughter prior to taking her to see the musical. She enjoyed the play very much so I ordered the soundtrack. She has been listening to it daily while dancing and singing along. The performances are very good and the music is lovely.

5 out of 5 stars MARVELOUS MUSICAL, MASTERFULLY PERFORMED . . . . ........2007-05-24

With 82 customer reviews already in place, it's difficult to add anything new except BUY THIS WONDERFUL RECORDING BEFORE SONY/BMG SENDS IT TO THE DUST BIN!!!!! Personally, I was enchanted by Lucy Simon's music, especially by "Lilly's Eyes" and "How Could I Ever Know?" Rebecca Luker (Lilly's Ghost) and Robert Westenberg (Dr. Craven) are in especially fine voice, and - gratefully - Mandy Patinkin isn't nearly as irritating as he so often has become. But the show rests on the shoulders of twelve-year-old Daisy Eagan, the 1991 Tony Award winner for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and she carries it very well, indeed.

Although not the stuff of which big, splashy mega-hits are made, and in spite of fairly negative reviews (I direct you to Frank Rich's "New York Times" review on theater2.nytimes.com), THE SECRET GARDEN enjoyed a modest run of 709 performances. With its gloomy story line, brooding characters, and soaring, Verdi-esque melodies, perhaps it's better suited to an opera house than to the Broadway stage. And with a few revisions, I wouldn't be surprised if THE SECRET GARDEN joins CANDIDE in opera company repertoires.

Incidentally, in case your're interested: Lucy Simon and her song writer/singer sister Carly recorded a couple of folk albums back in the 60s - "The Simon Sisters" & "Cuddlebug." Now availble on one CD entitled "Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod," those 25 songs are guaranteed to delight and enchant you, as Lucy's melodies and Marsha Norman's lyrics for THE SECRET GARDEN also delight and enchant. Better order "W,B,& N" right away. In this age of bottom-line-means-everything, who knows how long it will remain availble.

Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars THE SECRET GARDEN Is Alive With Genius.......2007-03-28

An Original Cast Recording of any Broadway Musical has many obstacles to overcome from the outset: not only do the music and lyrics have to be enjoyable, and the arrangements must be intriguing, but the recording also must somehow impart the feel of actually BEING in the audience of the Broadway show. Most Cast Recordings fall miserably short of these requirements. Happily, THE SECRET GARDEN, succeeds where most others fail. THE SECRET GARDEN, with music by Lucy Simon and lyrics by Marsha Norman, is a lush, magnificent recording filled with some of the most beautiful and soaring operatic music I have ever heard on or off the Broadway stage. In the classic style of Broadway genius Stephen Sondheim, there are no "puff pieces" on this CD...each song is necessary to advance the story, and once the listener has enjoyed the CD, they will, without doubt, feel they had a front row seat for this lovely bouquet of a show. Since there are 36 different cuts on this CD (after all, most of the dialogue is sung, in true operatta form) it is extremely difficult to choose the musical standouts. The opening of the CD, which sets the tone of this story, is nothing short of brilliant, as it packs a lot of information so effortlessly into song. "Lilly's Eyes" as sung by Mandy Patinkin, who's character is lamenting the death of his wife, is chillingly beautiful, as is the haunting duet "Come To My Garden". The CD's show stopper is a rousing rendition of an inspirational song called "Hold On", and is sure to become a Broadway classic. The show's cast, including Daisy Eagen as the little girl around whom most of the action takes place, Mandy Patinkin as her Uncle, John Babcock, Alison Fraser, and Rebecca Luker have some of the finest operatic voices ever heard on ANY stage. This is a show with a true heart, a brilliant soul, and is, in short a soaring celebration of the Broadway theatre at its finest! Run...don't walk...to buy this CD. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic CD.......2007-03-22

Even though this is a cast recording from the 90's,
it's absolutely wonderful. I love it and play it a lot.
After I bought mine, I lent it to my sister who asked me if I
could order 2 for her, because she wants to give one as a gift.
I highly recommend it to everyone.

It's fair to assume that if you're a Seal fan, you prefer your pop shot through with substance. Using that as a guiding principle, you'll want to glide right into Best: 1991-2004 where you will encounter, throughout two discs and 27 songs, scarcely a second of musical fluff. All the expected goosebump-raisers come on disc one--"Don't Cry" follows "Prayer for the Dying" follows "Kiss from a Rose" follows "Crazy"--and they're interspersed with deeper cuts from Seal IV such as "Get It Together" and "Loves Divine" as well as a couple of covers that, in a lesser vocalist's hands, might have been catastrophic. Seal plays it subtle and sweet and Burt Bacharach's "Walk on By," sidestepping any instinct to belt, and the help he gets from Mikey Dread on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" settles the song into a snazzified reggae-pop celebration. (Also included is Seal's soaring cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle," which proved his prowess as a cover artist with its chart success). Though "best" collections aren't normally upheld for their surprise elements--nobody likes a package that challenges with armloads of new stuff--disc two pulls off a neat stunt. It's a complete acoustic album, again encompassing the major radio hits but stretching to include tracks like the impossibly tender "Touch" and the meltingly gorgeous "Colour." Their unplugged presentation, with the artist on guitar, sets an up-close-and-personal tone that suits Seal. More to the point, it suits his fans, who'll take all the intimacy with the singer-slash-heartthrob they can get. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Multiplatinum selling, Grammy winning, critically acclaimed Seal unveils his first greatest hits collection with Seal Best 1991-2004. But there's even more-along with the single-CD edition, with original album versions of 12 of his hits and best-loved tracks plus a cover song newly recorded by Seal ("Walk on By"), a double-CD package adds a disc of newly recorded acoustic versions of nine of those cuts (and four others). For fans of the pop, dance, urban and adult contemporary, Seal Best 1991-2004 is the quintessential Seal experience.

5 out of 5 stars I love this music!.......2007-07-20

I'm usually buy only R&B, but I decided to try a different type of an artist. I love listening to Seal! His style is cool, unique and very sexy. Definately a Seal fan!

5 out of 5 stars I love love love this guy! .......2007-03-16

This album is one I can play over and over and not get tired of. His music is fun, inspirational, romantic and just beautiful. Highly recommended for those who just want to relax and comtemplate things with a nice sound in background, or turned up loud, it makes you smile and want to dance.

5 out of 5 stars Seal it with a Kiss.......2007-03-11

Nobody does it better. All of Seal's greatest hits in ONE CD. Does it get any better than that?

4 out of 5 stars "Greatest Hits" album could have been "greater".......2007-03-08

I would consider myself among the top 31 (arbitrary number, of course) Seal fans in the known world, and this greatest hits album is dynamic because it's Seal, but could have been better with a few missing songs. "Newborn Friend" is a lesser known hit to those who may not be as well-versed in Seal, and it definitely should have been included. It's one of his finest works and a far cry from "Kiss from a Rose" or "Crazy", his two most well-known hits. Also, a track or two extra from "Human Beings" would have been nice. I'm not sure why Seal seems hell bent on ignoring this album, which I still prefer over Seal IV, for some reason. He doesn't even seem to perform off of it much in concert. I could have done without "Lips Like Sugar", too. It just seems like filler. For what it's worth, though, the acoustic album that comes with the special edition of the greatest hits disc is stellar and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now how about Seal V?

5 out of 5 stars essential seal.......2007-02-06

if you like Seal, this is a great compilation to add to your collection. always relaxing yet refreshing, I listen to this CD along with music by Sting, Sarah McLachlan, Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel for a nice afternoon of relaxation with my MMOs or RPGs like Sims2.

If you are trying to decide between this recording and "Cloudburst," pick this one. The female voices do not have that shrieking quality that they do on "Cloudburst" and the soprano soloist from the BYU Singers is fantastic.

I do prefer the faster pacing of some of the pieces on the "Cludburst" recording, but this one is better all around.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Choral Composer.......2007-03-09

Taken as a whole, Eric Whitacre is my favorite choral composer. I have to listen to his music at least once a week. As far as student choirs go, BYU does a stunning job for the most part. The few minor mistakes do not detract from the music. This is an essential album in my book.

3 out of 5 stars whitacre.......2007-01-25

I bought this CD because it included the piece "Lux aurumque", which I feel must have been inspired because it transforms the listener into another realm. The other pieces are well done, too, but none reach me in the same way as "Lux aurumque". I love the tight overlapping harmonies and suspensions.

5 out of 5 stars Choral excellence.......2007-01-07

I asked for, and received, this recording for Christmas based on the excellence of prior BYU performances and having really enjoyed performing Cloudburst in the past. This recording does not disappoint. It excels on every level. The choral writing is compelling and the performance of the BYU Singers is simply amazing. I've been around choral singing for many, many, years and the level of achievement here is stunning. Based solely on hearing recordings and seeing their recorded concerts on PBS, I would recommend anything from the BYU choral department.

5 out of 5 stars Spine tingling.......2006-12-29

I was VERY suprised to hear this kind of sound from a college choir! The blend of the choir and the emotion behind the music is enough to give anyone goosebumps. From the soaring harmonies of "Water Night" to the subdued tenderness of "Sleep" to the playfulness of "Leonardo" this disc has something for everyone. A guaranteed Best Buy!

Bob Dylan has always been incredibly prolific, only releasing a fraction of what he records. Such a policy has made him a prime target for bootleggers over the years, finally prompting this sanctioned 1991 triple-disc dive into the Dylan vaults. It consists of rare tracks, unreleased outtakes, early versions of classics ("Times They Are a-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," "I Shall Be Released"), and alternate versions that sometimes cut the originals ("Idiot Wind"). A measure of Dylan's depth is his list of discarded songs ("She's Your Lover Now," "Blind Willie McTell," "Series of Dreams") that would be the crown jewels of most catalogs. These 58 tracks serve as a shadow history of one of our most important artists. --Ben Edmonds

How far beyond awesome? If there's a Heaven and a Hell, if you haven't heard this at your end, you ain't goin' to Heaven.

Buy it. And I dare you to try to remove it from your CD player after hearing it the first time. But listen to it sitting down, or it'll knock you down.

Add 5 stars to the stingy 5 stars.

Can somebody out there help me with this collection? A few years ago Columbia was remastering the Bob Dylan catalog, and that is when I purchased the 3CD set of his called BIOGRAPH, because on the back of the box it said, Digitally Mastering at Sterling Sound, N.Y.C., with SBM, super bit mastering sound, so I was glad that I waited to purchase it till the remastered version became available, and I`ve been holding off from purchasing this collection till this collection has been remastered as well, in the SBM way that Biograph has. Or prehaps it has been by now, can somebody tell me if Columbia has remastered this collection yet?

I absolutely love this bootleg set. It is the best music purchase I've made in several months; I can say this after having it firmly rooted in my CD player since I received it in the mail. I'm not a "reviewer of music," but watch out for Dylan's version of Idiot Wind in the set. It'll break your heart and leave you wanting more. A MUST have for any Dylan lover!

I've been a huge Dylan fan since I found "Bringing It All Back Home" nestled amongst my mother's Sonny & Cher albums at the age of 17. I'm no completist, but I do have most of Dylan's catalog, including almost everything he released during the 1960's... or so I thought!

The Bootleg Series 1-3 is exhaustive without ever feeling exhausting - the three discs span three decades of Dylan's career, and it just FLIES by you like snapshots in an album, giving you a great sonic evolution of the greatest singing poet the world has ever known. The discs demand immediate re-listens (no really!), and many tracks will beg the question "why the heck didn't THIS ever find it's way onto an album?!?"

For the uninitiated (are there any left?), this collection is a great introduction to Dylan's first 30 years; but to those of us who grew up listening to the man, it serves as a time machine, transporting you back to that emotional rush when you first heard the nasal whine and amazing lyrics of Robert Zimmerman. For some, that's worth it's weight in gold.

Love the Cd has songs I had never heard Bob sing, and everything was just fine.

    3 out of 5 stars Cheesy 80s music with a few classics..........2007-03-17

I don't own any other albums by Starship (or Jefferson Airplane or Jefferson Starship or any other iteration of this schizophrenic group) and don't consider myself a fan. I bought this album strictly because it was dirt-cheap, and I was familiar with a few of the songs.

Ultimately, the album does deliver their few biggest hits from the 80s, including "We Built This City," "Sara," and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." And those songs are lots of fun, even if primarily for their nostalgic sound.

There are also a few other interesting songs that were new to me, such as "Find Your Way Back." However, most of the other tracks were largely forgettable.

Ultimately, this album is nothing beyond mediocre. Based on other reviews, it appears that true fans will want to look elsewhere. And casual listeners like myself won't find much of value here beyond their few big hits. This disc is tolerable but nothing special.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Collection of the Later Years.......2006-08-01

For me this is the Starship of my generation,(I do love to 'Somebody To Love')featuring the Fantastic voices of Mickey Thomas & Grace Slick, the more Rock & Pop songs of this period has been unfairly reviewed by some, I would rather have 'We Built This City' as one of the defining songs of the 80's than the most of mess that are examples of the 90's & now! 'Sara' is one the best songs of the 80's, and the huge hit 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now'. These are great songs that still sound good and bring back great memories!

    5 out of 5 stars Great songs!.......2005-03-24

Worth it just for 'We Built this City', which was one of the best songs of the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars More of A Bridge Than A Greatest Hits Album........2005-02-13

Jefferson Airplane was considered a really good rock outfit. They were a key part of the sex, drugs and rock n' roll of the 70's. Swiftly they began to change. From battles over the name of the band to member changes to style changes, the group seemed more like three or four bands than one. The musical styling changes prove that. Those changes can be heard throughout this album.

The earlier songs found here, especially "Jane," hearken back to the days when this band was built to rock. Songs like "No Way Out" revealed the changes to come as the band metamorphosed one more time into a pop/arena rock outfit. Of course, this change lead to their big hits of the 80's, such as "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "Sara," which are included here. The album also includes a couple of new tracks which are pretty good, "Good Heart" and "Don't Lose Any Sleep," which show a band embracing their new pop sound to perfection.

Of course, there are always songs that bring about controversy, and "We Built This City" is that song on this compilation. Much like Styx's "Mr. Roboto," this song is either loved or detested by all that hear it. I'm one of those schmucks who loves the song. It's been rated one of the cheesiest songs ever on a multitude of television shows and in magazines. It's also been called one of the best pop tunes ever. No matter which side of the fence you're on, it's here for you to sample.

In closing, all you can really say about this album is that it gives you a taste of what once was Jefferson Airplane, what became Jefferson Starship, and what eventually went down in flames groupwise as Starship. All of the songs on this album are keepers, but there's nothing especially groundbreaking here. Just keep in mind that Starship is the pop version of Jefferson Airplane, and you won't be let down.

    4 out of 5 stars This is a good, over-the-top '80s rock album!.......2004-05-31

I liked this Starship album compiling their hits between the name changes of Jefferson Starship and Starship. I loved Jane when it came out in 1979 and the other songs from '84 to '90 are full-blown over-the-top rockers! They were like a milder Van Halen under the newer name with the excess and bombast. The pre-'84-85 songs don't grab me as much as the others. Some of the songs actually sound good in Atlanta--the skyline of that city matches very well to the songs and landscapes. We Built This City still rocks, I still like the calm to blasting vibes of No Way Out, Sara still has that mysterious feel to it, It's Not Over still is charging, and I still like the Mike Shipley sound of It's Not Enough. Paul Kantner and Mickey Thomas were good as the lead singers, but no one mentioned Marty Balin? To me, he was also another strong lead singer in that band when he was in it. Through a lot of conflicts over the group name, this album justifies their success in the '80s. Surprising that most of the songs average in the 4 1/2 minute range.

If I am not mistaken, the cut you spoke of "you're all I need" is actually a verse from the song; "make me say it again girl," by the Isley Bros. It is available on the CD entitled: "The Heat Is On." You do not have an email address listed so I had to put the answer in the review section. Hope this was helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Every bit as good as Jodeci, Boyz II Men, TTT and Dru Hill.......2006-03-20

Mint Condition was one of those groups of the '90s that played the background behind Jodeci, Boyz II Men, Tony Toni Tone, Dru Hill (and to a lesser extent, 112).

But technically, Mint Condition had better production and could hang with any of the aforementioned as singers, entertainers and musicians.

This Collection is a great listen for MC fans and a good introduction to potential new fans.

Their standout tracks were the radio hit singles "You're Breaking My Heart Pretty Brown Eyes" and "U Send Me Swingin'." They're both slow groove-kina songs with high energy and great sangin'.

I only gave this LP 4 Stars instead of 5 b/c it didn't have their last great radio hit from 1997-98 "If You Love Me (Like You Say You Do)."

I LOVED that song back in the day and really felt like that single would've made this album absolutely complete.

5 out of 5 stars Angst, Anger and Love.......2006-06-24

This CD was the Cranberries' first, and was refreshing even though they deviated little from middle of the road pop. Dolores O'Riordan's lovely Irish voice, delivered periodically in a grunge style, made this debut album fun to hear. In general the music here is safe, though the lyrics sometimes are not. The Cranberries have a history of choosing sometimes distressing topics for their music. It can sometimes be uncomfortable to confront their world, which seems to be tainted by despair and a variety of angst.

"I Still Do" is an angst-ridden track, heavy on mellow bass, about someone who is in love, and wants to break it off, even though that person is still in love. The reason for breaking it off is not clear, and it need not be. This song is the generic break up song when you have mixed feelings about the relationship but realize that it is in at least one person's best interests to end the relationship.

We go from the angst of a possibly impossible relationship to the dream relationship in "Dreams," which was featured in "You've Got Mail." A pretty, fast-paced, song, Dolores tells her significant other that she has given herself to him, and he now has her heart, so please don't hurt her. She also says that she is amazed by his mind and how caring and understanding he is. The ethereal music with a rock beat I personally find to be very satisfying.

We go back to angst again with "Sunday." This time the singer cares for or loves someone, but can't seem to make the connection. This situation has happened to me, and I'll bet it's happened to many of you. Dolores starts singing this one is a grunge style, slowly. Then the pace picks up and the song attains a solid pop beat. Seems like anything Dolores sings is pretty.

"Pretty" has throwaway lyrics to vaguely blues-sounding music with heavy bass. Dolores gets to trill her voice in that endearing way. My guess is that the intent of the lyrics is to be there for the sound more than for the meaning. It works!
"Waltzing Back" is an angry song. How did these people come back into your life? They are going to take you away from me. It's not fair. In the end, there's nothing she can do about it; it's your life. It doesn't mean she has to be happy about it.

I like the next song. The style of "Sorry" makes solid use of Dolores's ability to hit high notes. This song is combination anger and angst; she's upset and angry, but at the same time you sense that she wanted it to work out. She still misses him, but is still angry too. The rock beat in the background punctuates her anger with heavy bass and percussion, and a fast beat. There is a good contrast musically between her bluesy angst laments and her anger.

The Cranberries love angst about love. "Linger" tells how she saw her significant other with someone else, and communicates the hurt she feels. She wonders why he can't just go with her instead of letting her believe that they have any hope of a relationship. This song is all string laments; solid angst.

And the angst just keeps on rolling with "Wanted." A fast-paced song, here Dolores sings about the communication gap between two people, and their ability to understand each other's needs. Just what is it you want, what are you trying to say?

"Still Can't..." starts acoustically, and then takes off with bass and backing drums. Dolores' sultry voice expresses her anger that her significant other is telling lies about the situation between her and him. He won't apologize, he's laughing about the situation behind her back. I don't think I'd want to be the other person in this song.

"I Will Always" expresses the simple thought that she gives everything of herself to him. He needs to do whatever he will do, and she'll be there. The music here is slow and mellow, Dolores sings very slowly, mournfully. She still manages to hit the high notes with a grunge flavor, even though it's not really a grunge song. Grunge blues maybe.

I get the feeling that "How" is the Cranberries version of "You're so Vain," which was sung by Carly Simon. The words express how he is self-centered, and he left her alone, at least emotionally, if not physically. Dolores was looking for a closeness that he isn't providing. There is a heavy drum beat in this relatively fast-paced song.

"Put Me Down" again makes such wonderful use of Dolores's voice, sultry to start and then going for the high notes. The topic of the song is pretty much like the title says: she keeps getting put down; she keeps trying, but keeps getting treated like a second-class person; this was a lovely song to finish off the original CD.

There are several versions of this CD. This version has five tracks added to the original release. I am a little mixed on the value of these tracks. I like the Cranberries a lot, and so the bonus tracks are nice to have. However, are they worth the extra money this CD costs over the previous version? That depends on how much you like the Cranberries. If you are a huge fan, the extra tracks are nice to have. Otherwise, if you have the original version, this CD did not have any improvement over the previous version that I could tell.

This CD is full of heavily orchestrated music, very well played. Dolores has an incredible vocal range, and her Irish accent adds something to these songs. There are so many influences that it is hard to categorize the music. I call it lovely and mellow, and my favorite Cranberries CD. I give this CD five stars plus.

From start to finish, one of the most emotionally honest albums ever made, and one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. It's 1993 and I'm 18 every time I listen to this CD. Love it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic Album!.......2005-12-11

When I first heard this album it was many years ago, but even now its still sounds fresh and beautiful. Doris's voice has a natural beauty about it which shines throughout the entire album and reminds you of a better, more innocent time. Great production, good lyrics and strong support from the other members. On this album, they transcended to a place reserved only for a choice few. A great piece of Art and Music.
