4 out of 5 stars Reconsidering Nono.......2002-07-30

I have of course known of Luigi Nono for most of my life. His music was discussed in every book on twentieth century music to be written since the 60's. And yet I'm ashamed to say that I had never heard anything by Nono until I bought this CD recently. I didn't know what I'd been missing. Nono is far from a dessicated total serialist. Rather his music is passionate and revolutionary. And perhaps even a bit spiritual...though probably it's a Marxist spirituality.

como una ola de fuerza y luz is the monumental work on this disc. Scored for orchestra, tape and soprano soloist, the work is a sonic tour de force. It was written to morn the death of Luciano Cruz, a Chilean revolutionary whom Nono had befriended. The sonic world of the piece is based on recurrent low clusters in the orchestra, and a musique concrete tape based on distorted piano and human voices. The work is tragic and haunting.

The other works on this CD are from the 1950's, when Nono was first making his reputation. They are settings of Neruda and Lorca and meant as an epitaph to Lorca, murdered by Franco's followers during the Spainish Civil War. The works are uncompromising, and yet there is a profound lyricism in the music. This becomes most evident at the end of the Third Epitaffio as the music becomes a straightforward tonal version of a Spanish Civil War anthemn. The effect is very moving.

Performances are exemplary on this CD. Ursula Reinhardt-Kiss sings the monumentally difficult lines of como with real precision. And Roswitha Trexler and Werner Haseleu do a wonderful job on the equally difficult lines of the Epitaffio.

This CD has whetted my appetite for more music of this wonderful composer. He is vastly underrated.

5 out of 5 stars like a wave of strength and light!.......2001-07-12

"como una ola de fuerza y luz" was written in 1971/1972 to commemorate the Chilean revolutionary, Luciano Cruz, of the MIR (Revolutionary Leftist Movement). This 30-minute piece, recorded in 1976 in Leipzig, is for soprano, piano and orchestra, accompanied by a tape recording of transformed piano sounds and human voices. The electronics are therefore simple, but powerfully effective, used at the end to evoke the continuing presence of the revolutionary spirit, and the utopian prospect. As noted, "como una ola" marked a transition toward Nono's more contemplative late (1980s) style. The two shorter works included here (written in 1952/3, recorded in 1977) are less innovative musically, but form a thematic whole, as they commemorate the (losing) democratic forces of the Spanish Civil War (set to verse from Garcia-Lorca and Neruda). From the dictators Franco and Pinochet, to such current anti-democratic forces as the World Trade Organization, the struggle continues...

4 out of 5 stars Disc shows transition between Nono's early and late styles........1998-12-22

Memento (Epitafio No.3) is a good example of Nono's early style, based on Schoenberg's Variations for Orchestra, with shouting chorus and a political text. Como una etc., composed in 1972, is rooted in this kind of music but also shows the transition into late Nono, full of erie, static sound, a sort of white on white effect. Dedicated to Luciano Cruz, a Chilean revolutionary and martyr, the work's title means "Like a wave of strength and light." Nono's musical interpretation of strength here consists in rumbling percussion and a piano smoldering away in its lower registers, while light becomes the electronically produced "space music" which the more violent music periodically gives way to, as if to a vision of another, more spiritual realm. Como una ola de fuerza y luz is certainly one of Nono's most powerful works, and may be one of the masterpieces of the century.

5 out of 5 stars Great music by a throughly neglected composer.......1998-12-21

Frank Zappa once said that one of his band members wanted to turn your teen aged ears around. He must have had music like this in mind. Luigi Nono's music thoroughly engages the ear and mind in ways that the rock modernist could only hope for. His setting of texts by Lorca and Neruda are stunning and the performances on this disc are a revelation. Even in the short and simple third movement of the Epitafio #1 the poem and its setting create an entire world that would take Borges fifteen pages to suggest.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome 80's techno-pop circa 2005! (and La Fuerza that expanded my musical world!).......2006-03-28

If you want the quick synopsis, skip to the end of this review. Otherwise, here's the LONG story! One day, in March 2005, I hit the wrong number on my stereo remote and instead of winding up on the "oldies" channel, I landed on the Latin Pop channel where I was mesmerized by La Fuerza Del Destino. Of course, I had NO IDEA who this Fey woman was, being as I didn't speak Spanish! I HAD been a Shakira fan since Laundry Service, even her Spanish albums, but I'd never looked any deeper into Latin music. At any rate, I really wanted to hear the song again SO I started listening to the Latin Pop channel just to hear Fey every 4 hours 45 minutes! Of course, in the meantime, I exposed myself to LOTS of other Latin musicians and music and REALLY ENJOYED IT. Not the depressing, angst filled stuff being cranked out lately by English speaking musicians! THAT'S why I'd been splitting time between 1955-70 Pop and the 80's music of my college days.

Back to the point--I took a chance and bought La Fuerza Del Destino from Amazon and WOW! FANTASTIC! From start to finish I just loved it! Of course, I couldn't UNDERSTAND anything, SO I decided to teach myself to understand Spanish. Living in the boonies near the Canadian border, there isn't anybody around who speaks Spanish (eh?) so that's why I had to teach MYSELF! I'm pleased to report success. I can now read and understand Spanish fairly well. Making up my OWN sentences is still a bit S L O W and pathetic, but I can UNDERSTAND lyrics and Spanish language movies (although I have to cheat with closed captioning at times when they TALK TOO FAST!). But I digress!

Since then, I've bought most of FEY'S other albums (and numerous other Latin albums!) from Amazon.com and enjoyed them ALL! Today, I can look back and say that La Fuerza Del Destino is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for my discovering a WHOLE NEW WORLD of music that I never knew existed AND for my learning a whole new language!! So thanks, FEY! You expanded my musical world and even made me want to move SOUTH OF THE BORDER--although it might be that I'm just getting tired of shoveling all the SNOW we get up here in the north!

NOW TO SUMMARIZE: I think that La Fuerza Del Destino is AWESOME. 12 GREAT TRACKS, not a lame one amongst them! Having never heard Mecano's versions (or of Mecano for that matter!) I judged this album as "new" material and not as "remakes". Happy, FUN dance pop with a techno-flair! La Fuerza, Barco A Venus & Busca Algo Barato are my favorite tracks. The whole album reminds me of the great American/English techno-pop from the 1980's. Nothing cutting edge or quirky (ala Shakira), but VERY WELL PERFORMED and WELL PRODUCED. I'll be back for more FEY when her new album comes out! FIVE STARS (y muchas gracias, Fey!) for LA FUERZA DEL DESTINO!!

4 out of 5 stars Oh no, es de Mecano!.......2006-03-11

Hoy no me puedo levantar (3/5): De ritmo casi disco o eurotechno.

Maten a Mecano.

Estupida letra.

Me cuesta tanto olvidarte (4.5/5): Punto y aparte.

3 out of 5 stars Una Fuerza Sin Destino.......2006-02-19

I respect fey, I grew up w/ her as a kid, since me being
a mutt she, and shakira were a channel for me to improve
my spanish, so alot of people didnt like her bubble gum
days, but I did, she had a childish act and I was a child
too. So alot of people who dislike her bubble gum days where
young adults when she came out, so she didnt give them an
impact as profound as the younger generation. So I got to
grow up through her musical development, everybody was
so shock when Vertigo came out, because she droped the innocent
kiddy gurl to be this euro-trance star that she is, but
for those who were to ignorant to see it coming I did,
she was just looking for the moment to wait, and see how
to use new beats, with new technology, the technology she
had when she did the first 3 ablums where limited, simple
electronic beats, and then Vertigo, she used electric
guitar, and gitter like sounds, and powerful vocals. And
like she said she wanted to take a break, and do something
fun, to re-do Mecano remixes, and she said an interview
in Vertigo she found her sounds, and will embrace in it
later in the future. This Cd was just for fun, and for that
I would give it 2 stars, but another one, because she did
this for herself, not for her popularity, and that's what
I admire in an artist, to go with there own flow, and not
sell out, she did that already, doing her act for 3 ablums
playing a childish gurl, when really she was waiting for the
moment to shot up, vertigo style.....

5 out of 5 stars You Go Girl!!!!!.......2005-12-31

This is my 3rd cd from Fey. I own her 2nd and 3rd cd also. I wanted this cd because their was a couple songs I heard on my latin music channel. And I loved those songs. I heard that these are not new songs. That they are songs from a group which I never bought any of their cds. Mecano. But I think they are all great. Wonderful cd Fey. Thank You.

2 out of 5 stars Give us another Vertigo PLEASE.......2005-10-31

The only reason I may give 2 stars to this album is because it has some nice music arragments & some interesting music sounds. Mecano music was the best at their time but the songs are dated and despite of the twist Fey gave to those songs they still doesnt cut it for todays music. The sales for her cd Vertigo may had not been the best but to give us this "fuerza del destino" after that wonderful "Vertigo" experience is far beyond unreasonable. Her voice sounds v good on this new record but the lyrics sounds dumb and after all nobody can sing them like mecano (I respect their music but I dont enjoy it). Please give us sequel to Vertigo Fey, we all know you can do much better. You cant trade quality and creativity for sales.

5 out of 5 stars A Generally Stimulating Album.......2000-01-21

I am not usually a fan of this genre of music, my tastes do not usually extend beyond classical or opera. On this occasion however, I decided to widen my horizons and 'Con La Fuerza De Un Huracan' seemed something different, something out of the ordinary compared to the music I tend to prefer. I ordered it and was genuinally impressed with the material which I received. It is full of soothing guitar melodies interspersed with amazing vocal innuendoes. Although the lyrics are in Spanish (a language which unfortunately I cannot speak) they touch you as if you know what they mean. After listening to this, I bought several other albums of a similar content, but have not yet come across the same excellence which exerts in waves from this. I recommend 'Con La Fuerza De Un Huracan', to anyone who has never really drifted away from there specific taste in music. It is a refreshing alternative from anything you have ever heard before.

These Guys know how to rock. They come from Chile. I have known los prisioneros since only 2003 because I come from new York and here in the In the USA you do not hear there music on spanish radio satations. They are a very local group. This cd contains all their good music with some of the best songs like Sexo which is one of my faviotes to Muevan Los industrias which is another one of my faviotes. And this cd is a double cd which is better for the money than like the Grandes Extios. Which is one cd and has only 12 songs. This cd pack has a lot more to offer for the money. Grupo Los prisioneros formed in 1979 and they recorded their first cd a yaer before I was born in 1980. If you are looking for new rock music because you are just sick and tired of Grupo La Ley or Grupo Mana then Grupo Los prisioneros will float your boat.

        5 out of 5 stars What a marvelous career!.......2002-10-05

What a joy this set is! Yes, it's a little on the expensive side but at the same time, it's a bargain for lovers of classical music -- and good music in general. DG has marked the 60th birthday of pianist Maurizio Pollini with this remastered, 13-disc set of some of his greatest ventures into the recording studio or onto the world's concert stages.

Beginning with the Chopin that thrust him onto the world stage more than 40 years ago to the works of Boulez and Nono, this set underscores the importance of Pollini in the musical pantheon. An added imprimatur is the fact that the master himself selected the recordings and performances to be included in the retrospective. Have there been showier musicians who've taken to the stage? Yes, but none is more refined, more content to let the composer and his music flow through the performer than Pollini is. That's not to say that he's got ice in his veins and no soul -- far from it. It's just that Pollini is happy to be the medium through which Schumann or Chopin speaks to audiences of today

Needless to say, as with virtually all DG discs, the sound and recording are impeccable. If you chose to take the plunge, you won't be disappointed. This set will quickly become one of the most accessed in your CD library. Happy listening!

5 out of 5 stars grand overview of Pollini's recorded output.......2002-03-22

Maurizo Pollini, the great concert pianist from Milan, is shown in fine form throughout this 13 CD box set "edition" of his previously released recordings on the Deutsche Gramophone label ( celebrating his 30th year with DG ). The performances were selected by the artist himself and so retain a merit absent in some other types of repackaging "schemes".

Hardcore classical music enthusiasts are rarely short of opinions, positive or negative, about this phenomenal musician. Like his friend Pierre Boulez, he is treated in some circles in almost idolatrous fashion, in others his playing is heard as cold, aloof, and mechanistic. However, even his detractors agree that his prodigious technique is married to an equally formidable grasp of form; "rambling" pieces are framed in a convincing way. His "architectural" approach ( he is the son of an architect ) is built up through careful study and sculpting of interpretations ( background research, various editions of scores, historical contexts ), some of which take decades to reach their recorded form. For better or worse, Pollini is simply not a "lover" of the piano in the way that others are. Yet it would simplistic to dismiss him as (merely) "Apollonian", for he has reserves of passion and feeling in his playing ( especially noticeable in concert ) that other pianists of a more celebrated effusiveness lack. Nevertheless, he is justly regarded as an "intellectual" musician and his brand of seriousness can at times put a damper on the lighter elements of, for example, the earlier period Beethoven sonatas.

Pollini's concert repetoire, stretching from Bach to Stockhausen ( neither of whom he has put to wax ), is weighted toward composers of the justly esteemed Austro-Germanic legacy and those ( noticeably ) outside its direct influence are rarely heard. In fact, Pollini's well-known commitment to contemporary music is an interest firmly linked to the very core of Austro-Germanic tradition ( Luigi Nono was certainly an adventurous composer but attached in his own way to the same "musical humanism" that Pollini reveres ).

This box set "edition" features a goodly portion of Beethoven; two of Pollini's famous 1977 recordings of the "late" piano sonatas ( including his highly touted "Hammerklavier" ) as well as versions of Concertos 3, 4 & 5. Regarding the mid period Beethoven, I'm not sure Pollini always takes the right approach ( the typically vacuum-packed dryness of DG's recordings doesn't help here ).

The lovely Mozart Concerto ( #23 ) done with Karl Bohm and the Vienna Philharmonic is included as is Pollini's ( second ) recording of the titanic Brahms Concerto #1 (Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra ).

While the celebrated performance of the late Schubert sonata in A Major is included I was sorry to see that its "companion" in C Minor ( D 958 ) was omitted in favor of shorter pieces. Any late piece by Schubert bears some admiration, but this choice was an oversight, whether by artist or record company ( time constraints are not an excuse as the identical pairing was used by DG some years ago ).

It's a well-known fact that Pollini came to prominence in 1960 by winning the Chopin competition in Warsaw. He has recorded a lot of Chopin's oeuvre but only one disc is devoted to the Polish composer in this box set; the Etudes ( op.25 ) are nice choice coupled with a fiery performance ( c 1985 ) of the 2nd Sonata.

His early ( 1973 ) recording of Schumann's greatest piano piece ( "Fantasy" ) is coupled with a 1989 recording of the Liszt Sonata (a natural choice considering each composer dedicated his work to the other ). Both are astounding performances; Pollini has Schumann's "measure" and his rendition of the Liszt gives lie to the notion that he is cold and mechanistic.

Moving into the 20th century repertoire, I find the Debussy Etudes ( Books I & II ) admirable but overly "careful" in places. His interpretation of the same works in concert has a depth that didn't quite make it to this recording. The coupling with Boulez' 2nd Piano Sonata ( 1948 ) demonstrates a link between the two composers that is actually more evident in the recent work of the celebrated French composer/conductor. This early piece in Boulez' output, ferocious and influential as it was, is not a favorite of mine ( I much prefer the roughly contemporaneous Sonata of the lesser known Jean Barraque ) but Pollini's rendition is absolutely astonishing in its virtuosity.

The Bartok Concertos 1&2 with Abbado and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra ( the only time Pollini has recorded with an American orchestra ) are simply dynamite; the CSO is uniformly excellent and Pollini tears through the fearsome passages with volcanic energy. The Stravinsky piano version of "Petrouchka" is included on this disc.

The edition has a disc dedicated to the "Second Viennese School", featuring all of Schoenberg's solo output ( 1974 recordings ) along with a tightly controlled version ( Abbado/BPO ) of the Austrian composer's masterful "Piano Concerto" ( 1942 ). Anton Webern's "Piano Variations" round out the disc ( unfortunately, no Berg Sonata ).

Finally, a disc devoted to the pianist's late friend Luigi Nono (1924-1990). The 13 minute "Sofferte onde serene" ( 1976 ), dedicated to Pollini, is a fascinating piece for piano ( "live" and pre-recorded ) with tape. It would be an understatement to say that I am unconvinced by the "manifesto" nature of the other work on this disc; I admire Nono's music in spite of my disagreements with his political beliefs.

An addendum to the set are two previously unreleased ( on DG ) performances: a 1960 recording of Chopin's "Concerto #1" ( Warsaw Philharmonic ) and a 1974 recording of the Schumann Concerto with von Karajan and the BPO.

Each CD features a black and white photo of Pollini with liner notes from various critics.
