This is an astonishingly impressive CD of popular Brazilian music, so full of life and joy! It's playful and uplifting while at the same time soulful and soothing. It is also one of my all-time favorite CDs. It is a one-time effort from 2003 of three friends and musical collaborators, Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown.

Since a friend gave the CD to me a few weeks ago I find it impossible to stop listening to it (muchas gracias amigo mio). After countless listens, I constantly hear new things. It just draws you in, welcomes you to stay a while, to laugh and smile and to enjoy the moment. Each song is an incredibly well crafted piece of art.

The lyrics are pure evocative poetry and the beautiful acoustic arrangements (mainly piano and guitars) and vocal harmonies are so interesting. Thankfully, both the original Portuguese lyrics and English translations are included in the liner notes. And the singing in Portuguese is superb - the charming sounds of that language goes so well with the music. Marisa Monte's gorgeous and soaring vocals lead on most cuts. Arnaldo Antunes' deep voice grounds the songs with his warm and rich tones. Carlinhos Brown's voice is pure magic, as is his unique and fun percussion.

The songs are about love, life, friends and the best experiences of your life. The Tribalistas music is evocative of poignant and wonderful experiences. Whenever I listen to this CD I recall the best summer of my childhood - it just has that feeling. You may find yourself floating back to your fascination with your first love. Or maybe you'll remember that anticipation as a child of receiving presents on your birthday or Christmas. Perhaps you will remember a great road trip with your best friends. For me, this CD is the soundtrack for all those great experiences.

The disc was solid. Each track was different and the cd flowed well, was well organized etc. I first heard of the tribalistas when I was living in Cabo Verde and when I came back to Canada it was the first cd I bought- they're a great brazilian group and their tracks have become classics worldwide. Foi otimo!

I loved this CD so much when i was in Europe, and i still do now, being here in the States. i am so glad they have portugese AND english translations inside of the CD--the lyrics to Ja sei namorar are so powerful, so deep--knowing their meaning is essential to appreciating this powerful Brazilian pop.

What a great CD, each track lets allows you to explore new feelings, and it is a project that is not to be overlooked. The CD comes with lyrics in Portuguese and English, so you are really able to appreciate the music. Each of the voices compliment each other well in every track. Definitely in my collection of favorites.

CD for rich people.......2003-08-06

Even if is a good cd of music,I'm really disapointed because it is imposible to listen it by a car's cd player.The reason is the recording protection. In the store they explain me that mabe only in very good cd player's could be posible. So the persons who buy the cd insted of coping it, are punished if they don't have an expensive car's cd player.Always the same inocents pay for thiefs.

I miss Brazil!.......2003-07-29

This will always be the CD that reminds me of my recent, first trip to Bahia (I intend to go back every year.) Warm, lush, gorgeous music. Track #3 is very popular in Brazil right now. Buy this CD - I saw a ton of bootlegged copies being sold on the beaches, so I fear Tribalista is not making the money they could be, and they deserve it.

Forget the CD, buy the DVD..........2003-03-03

I ordered the DVD from somlivre.com and besides having all the great music, it offers an unobtrusive, intimate look at the environment in which the music was created - having watched the DVD, I can tell you that contrary to the previous reviewer's comments, Carlinhos Brown contributes a lot to what you hear on Tribalistas.

Another neo-tropicalia gem from Brazil.......2003-02-12

A lovely little album! The band's name and all-star cast are an apparent tribute to the Veloso-Gil-Bethania-Costa mid-1970s supergroup, Doce Barbaros (The Sweet Barbarians), but in this case the musicians, neo-tropicalistas Arnaldo Antunes, Carlinhos Brown and Marisa Monte, go for tender restraint, rather than wild excess. It's a remarkably gentle, dreamy album, with an interesting blend of voices and styles. If I had to characterize it, I'd say this sounds more like an Arnaldo Antunes album than anything else, with its off-kilter sensibility and unhurried style. Monte, who put this album out on her own Phonomotor label, plays the central vocal part, though, with both Antunes and Brown complimenting her in unusual harmony parts. Carlinhos seems a little lost in the mix, at least his former trademark Afro-Brazilian percussion is hardly as prominent as on other albums. All in all, this is a very pleasant, inventive and multi-textured record, well worth checking out!

The Triumphant Trio.......2002-12-30

Tribalistas is such a fantastic recording! There are five or six instant hits and several dreamy songs. The songs are so catchy you won't be able to get them out of your head. Marisa's vocals are her best yet and she always works so well with Carlinhos and Arnaldo. The lyrics are unique (get a Brasilian friend to translate them for you!) and the melodies charming. Like the best of Brasilian music it feels like they are playing at your own party! Don't miss this one!

As a listener of local music as I traveled through Brazilian, it was the Trabalistas's "Velha Infancia" that captured my attention from the first note when heard over the airwaves. The perfect blend of music and voice need no interpretation of language to know there meaning. Marisa Monte's clarity of voice and presentation in this one song is powerfully moving even in the sometimes hushed tones of the background. For this one song along the purchase of the CD is worth it, happily I can write that I was only to be rewarded song after song with originality and beauty. The compliment of male and female voice blended together throughout the album is amazingly arranged and meld together leaving the listener to realize that any other combination or change would be unthinkable.

Three of Brazil's most important artists of the past 10 years -- Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes -- team up for this project -- a genre-blurring set of tracks that recalls similar efforts of the Tropicalismo generation, updated to reflect the styles of the three artists involved, with some nice complicated production touches from Monte herself, in particular. Highlights include "Carnavalia" (a five star song), "O Amor E Feio", "Passe Em Casa", and "Ja Sei Namorar." A wonderful recording.
