If you think you've heard it all, you're wrong. The three big guys are indeed back, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, with a rabidly enthusiastic crowd to welcome them. They sing many favorites-- "Granada," "Because," "Nessun dorma"--and there are a pair of medleys: one devoted to love songs, and one called "Medley of the World," which ends with a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" that might just bring tears to your eyes. If the truth be known, the three tenors have put on 8 years since we first heard them together, and a fair amount of bloom is off their rose-like voices--with Domingo's ardency sounding a bit hard-edged, Carreras's tone even more spread than before, and some of Pavarotti's gold tarnished and his breath shorter. Suffice it to say that older CDs by these three formerly-really-great tenors are worth their weight in gold, compared to the bronze you'll find here. But the classy James Levine at the helm keeps the "event" going with passion, and it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
For the last time!.......2006-12-23
Standing Ovation !!!.......2001-09-24
The Pavarotti rendition of "Nessun Dorma" was breathtaking as he "hit" his famous high C with VINCERO!!!
With the exception of "Nessun Dorma & Caruso", I felt that it
was Domingo who carried the show. His voice style changes so dramatically to fit the mood and melody of each song.
Carreras, I felt, was lacking the "oomph" in his solos on this tour. However, no one can top Carreras when a line needs to be delivered that has "deep-gut" emotional feelings, almost mad sounding, i.e. the song "Because" -- listen when he sings "his love makes mangle of devile...", you'll understand what I mean.
Combine the Three together and you have pure brilliance. Listen to the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" is almost patriotic like.
"O' Sole Mio" and the show stopper "La Donna Mobile" left the people standing and cheering.
The Paris setting was spectacular. James Levine was his normal go lucky conductor self as he makes the viewing audience and the orchestra feel at ease with his upbeat facial expressions.
An awesome addition to your collection. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see why the world has labled them "The Three Tenors." BRAVO
A mistake that we need to remember.......2001-09-10
Having watched the Three Tenors Concert in Los Angeles, which was so great and inspiring, I was hoping this one can turn out to be greater and more successful. However it really failed my expectation and turned me into disappointment. Several mistakes were made which surely caused this concert to be a failure.
First, the choice of the conductor. James Levine was really the wrong choice for the position which is actually the heart of such an important event. His style of conduct and taste of music was proven unsuitable. It did not make you feel excited, but at sometimes made you feel uneasy and uncomfortable.
Second, something seemed to be limiting Domingo's ability and talent to be fully expressed. In fact he appeared to be much older and less energetic. The usual powerfulness and beauty of his voice really disappeared somewhere that can be hardly known.
As for Pavarotti we can only give him an average mark for his performance.
Third, lack of common sense. Even three years old child knows Granada has to be and is best to be sung by Domingo, just like Nessun Dorma has to be by Pavarotti, but I just can't understand why the organiser or the music directors did not realize this? Were they too commercially motivated or too careless???
Jose was the best and played an instrumental role to keep this concert going, my admiration towards him grow more after this event. Anyway huamns do make mitakes including the famous and popular ones. Although this concert was not their greatest my support for them will still remain.

If you're looking to play the devil, the lower male range gives you an advantage, at least according to stage convention. But when it comes to the art of romance--unless you happen to be a certain promiscuous Don--a thrilling tenor voice is worth its weight in gold. This Pure Tenors compilation showcases the gleaming brilliance of this voice type in its romantic guise. The tenor--so to speak--of the selections ranges from Broadway fare and favorites such as "Love Is a Many-Splendoured Thing" to the fervent intensity of Puccini's Turandot (in the pulse-elevating closing number). Predictably, today's great tenor trinity--voice of gold Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo (in some very frisky moods), and the passionate José Carreras--gets by far the most representation. But of the huge world of other tenors out there, Universal at least gives a hint, with a vintage selection from the legendary Giuseppe di Stefano--a golden voice from the past very worth your while to seek out if you haven't yet discovered it. And, of course, pointing to today's contenders for the throne, there's an aria from Andrea Bocelli's recent Verdi compilation. When you listen to these voices, with their different ways of shading and coloring a phrase, you'll realize no two tenors sound alike. --Sarah ChinCustomer Reviews:

Should buy for fans of these tenors.
A Great Cd.......2003-05-05
Carreras gets gyped a bit in this Cd. They only really allow him to sing from Broadway and west side story which is a shame. This is not where is vocal glory lies. Don't get me wrong he sounds great, but I want to hear E lucevan le stelle or one of the arias from Carmen he is so famous for. His Maria is the highlight if only to hear him sing a decent high-note after hearing so much of his diminished "three-tenors" cannon fodder.
Anyone interested in him should buy "Carreras the Golden Years."
Im glad Bocelli was included on this Cd to show how thin he sounds next to some of the big tenors of the generation. Ladies and Gentelemen Bocelli is not an opera singer. He has no training or stylistic integrity in the field. He is, however, a smashing pop artist and would encourage you to hear his "Sueno" for proof. La Donna E Mobile is one of his best aria's as he shows he has firm high notes but his voice is also noticably thinner than the rest.
Domingo sounds awesome in this Cd. His voice is splendid in the Lanzaesque reperatoire which he sings here. Go out and buy his Dvd's and opera recordings. Check out "The greatest hits of Placido Domingo" His Core N'Grato rivals Carreras's 1978 recordin of the song. He is in absolutley electrifying form.
Pav sounds okay. He is recorded here very late in his carrer. Nessun Dorma is fantastic even though his voice is not heavy enough fundamentally for the aria. His Mattinata is not that impressive. Don't get me wrong he is one of my favorite tenors, I just prefer him in the light italian opera repretoire. I would suggest The Pavarotti Gold Collection for further study on the big italian. His L'esir D'amore is as good as it gets.
Russel Watson is a bit of a paradox. I heard him on this Cd and thought he was the real thing. He sounds like a great verismo tenor on this cd in one of my favorite ( though slightly modified) arias. I say he is a paradox because I just recently watched his concert "Now is the Hour" on Pbs and he doesnt sound like that at all. His passagio is spread and there are visible signs of strain as well as tecnical problems. Where is the Watson who sang this Amor ti Vieta? Who knows? I do know I almost vomited when he talked his way through O Sole Mio in his "Now Is the Hour" saying "are you ready" each time before the famous Da Capo; but that is neither here nor there.
Di Stefano is also there as a welscome surprize. This is a tenor from the last generation of the likes of Corelli and Gedda. He is reasonably impressive singing Chitarra Romana considering the old-school recording tecniques.
Overall this is a good run-down of the tenors out there on the Pop/ Opera world stage. Have fun with it!
Nice CD! Must have for Classic fan........2003-03-27

It's hard to knock the hopelessly romantic--especially when, like your parents, they have their own national holiday. Designed as the musical equivalent of a Valentine's Day chocolates sampler (right down to its candy-box design and enclosed gift card containing a romantic poem by Robert Burns), the score of tracks here touch on romantic musical confections that journey from the opera stage (Puccini's Gianni Schicci, Massenet's Thais) to a wealth of Neopolitan love songs highlighted by the effusive Pavarotti/Mancini reading of "Chitarra Romana" and Placido Domingo's dramatic interpretations of "Siboney" and the bittersweet "Core 'Ngrato." The contemporary songbook is represented by Goran Sollscher's bossa nova guitar take on the Beatles' "And I Love Her," while Hollywood gets more than its due via lush Boston Pops renditions of "Unchained Melody," "Evergreen," "Love Story," "Romeo & Juliet," "A Summer Place" and "The Godfather." And just when it all seems ready to threaten one's dental health and/or sober nature, along comes Aubrey Woods' sprightly, bonus-track "Candy Man" from Willy Wonka to put it all in perspective; a guilty, lighthearted pleasure for the hopeless romantic in all of us. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
