Topflight pop singer pays tribute to her heritage on this amazing roots ranchera album that also features excellent backing by the world-famous Mariachi Vargas, all under the experienced hand of master arranger-composer-producer Ruben Fuentes. Everything clicks wonderfully here, but numbers that set a new standard include "Tu Solo Tu," an incredibly harmonic love ode; "Por un Amor," on the price of real love; and "Los Laureles," a song of declaration on which Ronstadt soars unbelievably high. These are old Mexican classics, played by arguably the world's best mariachi group and sung by one of North America's greatest vocal talents. Extras include performances by another world figure, requinto player Gilbert Puente, who made trio history when he led Mexico's Los Tres Reyes in the '50s and '60s. Muy lindo.......2007-04-26

I did not know that Linda Ronstadt was Hispanic until I heard this CD. Her papa was definitely a Mariachi, it shows in her singing. I like his Spanish CDs better than her English ones.

I am so glad that I found this CD. I hope that she continues to do more songs in the Mariachi style. I'm glad that she was able to go back to her ethnic roots. This is a wonderful, beautiful CD.

Essence of Mexico.......2007-04-20

Linda Ronstadt does an excellent job in capturing the essence of Mexico. Being of partial Mexican origin myself, and having traveled south of the border many times; I could see in my mind images of Old Mexico...very traditional and very outstanding.

Other Spanish language artists used for comparison: Lola Betran, Nat "King" Cole, Nana Mouskouri, Vinciente Fernandez, Juan Gabriel, Ana Gabriel.

This is a great mariachi piece--one of my very favorite CDs and a must have for Linda Ronstadt fans. Linda is fantastic, and, oh boy, can she hold a note!

What A Voice.......2006-07-02

My Parents really enjoyed this particulay album when it came out a few years ago. This past month, we celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and this CD was played throughout the grand party - bringing sweet memories and tears of rememberance to both parents eyes and their childrens eyes. Being that Mom is of hispanic heritage and dad's deep appreciation of that culture - that adds up to my love of this type of music. This CD is a treasure that will provide memories forever.

Clasicos de las Americas has Good Gottschalk.......2004-02-23

This six CD set has the Central and South American greats, but I prefer the North American who did some of his best composition South of the border. Louis-Moreau Gottschalk had the life of a modern day Rock Star. He is joined in this set by such prominent players as Heitor Villa-Lobos, George Gershwin, Augustin Barrios, and Carlos Guastavino. George Rabol is a favorite pianist.

Like his famous father, Santiago Sr., a noted conjunto patriarch, Santiago Jr. plays in the old style of traditional conjunto. The music is simple but still evokes a sense of graceful beauty. The CD offers the happy-go-lucky dance polkas "Antonia Antonia," on discovering a new love, and "El Pescador," on finding happiness in simple tasks, and also includes corridos, a Mexican story-song form that first was used to convey major historical events such as the Mexican Revolution. Here the corrido "Inundacion de Piedras Negras" deals with a major flood. Most of these songs were written by Santiago Sr., and the son pays tribute by recording these classics. Also memorable is the love-unlimited ode "Todo por Ti" and the robust prayers-are-answered tune "Eres un Encanto." --Ramiro Burr
