About the Artist
KRISTINA OLSEN (USA) Kristina Olsen is one of the most entertaining and compelling performers on the global folk circuit. A superb multi-instrumentalist (acoustic & steel-bodied guitars, saxophone, piano, concertina), as well as an award-winning songwriter and singer, Kristina enraptures audiences with her mix of finely crafted songs ranging from sassy blues to lilting ballads to swing jazz to raunch and roll, as well as her hilarious storytelling. Born and raised in Haight-Ashbury during the 1960's, Kristina's approach to music and life was informed by its vital cultural expression, social activism and diverse musical influences. She's performed with Christine Lavin, Loudon Wainright the 3rd, Patty Larkin and many others, and recorded with Michelle Shocked ('Short Sharp Shocked'). Now based in Venice Beach, L.A., Kristina spends most of the year touring the USA, Canada, Europe, the UK, Australia & NZ. She has recorded 4 albums for Rounder/Philo Records as well as the hugely successful indies 'Duet'and 'The Truth of a Woman' with Australian cello whiz Peter Grayling.

5 out of 5 stars Naked folk exposed.......2005-04-27

To me, good folk music is a performer's document of their time. I love this album because it is so revealing and open about Kristina's experiences.

This album gives the impression that Kristina has been around, done some living, reflected on what she has been through and then written heart felt lyrics about it all.

I'd recommend buying this album just for the song "Portsoaken" alone. Great stuff and what a pity there aren't any samples for you to hear.

Kristina's lyrics are so good because they don't have any self pity in them, only strength and humour. This is not the music of a self pitying navel gazer but that of a strong woman in love with life and all that it brings.

I saw Kristina in concert in Birchgrove in Sydney and I was blown away. It was a free concert and Kristina was on the smaller of two stages and it looked like she was going to be some kind of filler act (I'd never heard of her before). She quickly dispelled my misgivings and went on to give a really great show (unaccompanied). She shone, I feel really grateful to have seen her live.

5 out of 5 stars All this and she can dance, too!.......2002-03-24

This recording ranges from passionate to bittersweet to hilarious to exquisite. Regardless of where the ride takes you, it's extremely well sung and performed. The interplay with the other performers and the audience adds to the experience. They all so clearly enjoy being there that one can't help but join in. Highly recommended!
