Amazon.com essential recording

Ordinarily, it pays to be wary of collections such as these, which often promise a lot but deliver a mishmash of disconnected excerpts. This disc, however, is something of an exception: you really do get just about all of Puccini's best arias, which is possible, because he didn't write so many operas that choosing the best moments becomes a matter of the producer's personal taste. Also, Puccini's operas are so popular that every major label has excellent complete recordings of all of them, so in making this compilation it was possible to cast from strength: all the singers here are fine. In fact, the only proviso that needs to be made before you rush out and add this disc to your collection is that it's wrong to assume that all of Puccini's best tunes lie in his arias. The opening 10 minutes of any one of his operas will tell you that's not true. So by all means enjoy this disc--then start sampling the operas complete. --David Hurwitz

"Quando m'en vo" is not omitted from this CD; it is just called "Musetta's waltz song." It is the same aria.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2003-10-14

This is one of the first opera CDs I ever got. It's wonderful for just about any body;from the newbies like me or the opera fanatics. I especially like 'In Questa Reggia'. Buy it now!!

5 out of 5 stars HATE OPERA? THIS ONE WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND.......2003-09-04

The Ultimate Puccini Collection features some of Puccini's most arias and will appeal to even the most ardent operaphobes.

A great listening experience featuring some of the greatest opera performers of all time.

3 out of 5 stars "Ultimate" only if you like your opera "al fresco"!.......2002-06-13

The music is without question, among the most beautiful ever written. But the quality of the fidelity tells me that many of the selections were recorded live in concert in outdoor venues. I wish that was clear to me before I bought the disc. So, is the music the ultimate? YES! Is the recording the ultimate? NO!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Performance but Average Recording Quality.......2002-02-18

I love opera! I love Puccini! Not only is the vocalism important to me, but the quality of the recording as well. I enjoy my hi-tech sound system. I like to feel as if I am sitting in the front row of the first balcony when I listen to opera. This CD is excellent! The vocalists were well chosen. The technical performances are eloquent and emotional, as Puccini should be. However, the quality of the recording is not very good. No matter how you adjust your sound system, the recording is a bit tinny and as a result, the emotional high points of the arias are not as vibrant as they could be if the recording were of better quality. I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves Puccini and who is not as finicky as I!

If you love the ever popular words of Jose Alfredo Jimenez, than this CD and the accompanying volume 2 are a must-have! His compositions are timeless and it's easy to understand why mainstream pop artists of Latin America continue to record his songs. 5 out of 5 stars Now and forever El Rey.......2001-08-10

This CD, coupled with Vol.11, makes for the most volume of work ever assembled of the late great composer and singer, Jose Alfredo. This volume, like vol.11 has 50 songs, so if you buy both CD's you get "Las 100 Clasicas." There are many compilations of "greatest hits" but this is without a doubt the best. It has all the familar fare plus alot of rare and more obscure recordings that are lesser known. Some of these gems were previously only on vinyl. What you get here is a variety of rancheras filled with Jose Alfredo's favorite subjects. A tormented soul, Jose Alfredo sings often of loves both lost and won. His songs are autobiographical in nature as he inevitably numbs his pain, both in song and life as he celebrates his victory with "otro tequila" or as he often invokes,"otro vaso de vino." The themes Jose Alfredo writes about include all the usual suspects. The characters are all here, the coward, the brave soul, the bartender and his clients, the chaos that often results, gunfights and fistfights, the women in all forms, wives and lovers, unappreciative, bandidas, lovely and kind, beautiful and senuous, he loved them all, both in real life and in song, querido Mexico with all it's beautiful places, including Mazatlan, Jalisco and Guanajuato to name a few, dogs and their owners, horses and their riders, money and all it's pitfalls, poverty and it's tragedies, sadness and happiness, luck and fate in life and death, God and La Virgen, boxers and other machos, in short if it existed in Jose Alfredo's life he wrote about it. Make no doubt though, his favorite themes were love, women and drinking, no wonder I love this guy! Someone like Jose Alfredo only passes briefly through this cosmos, like a shooting star he was brilliant but short lived. That he was able to create such voluminous work in his 47 years is mind boggling. This volume covers songs from his most active decade, the 60's, with the exception of a few classics from 1972. The mariachi is the world renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, often arranged and directed by the the brilliant Ruben Fuentes. There are so many great songs that it is hard to pick favorites but suffice to say that when Jose Alferdo's disc is playing the "next" button is never touched, I want the full experience. If you are like me, one can never get enough Jose Alfredo so this is perfect, to have 50 songs on one CD(2 discs) is nirvana. If you have alot of these songs already, like I do, don't worry, there are enough "unknown" gems here to make it worth it. Besides it is good to have one in the car and wherever else one stores their favorite CD's. If you are new to Jose Alfredo welcome and enjoy this great CD, if you're an old fan, enjoy revisiting the master. Jose Alfredo sigue siendo El Rey, for all times. Buy this CD for an awesome, historical musical experience to be lived over and over. "El disco es cultura."

This man was and is simply true genius. His songs evoke such emotion and inspiration, that the simple thought of his lyrics wiil leave your toungue tasting like agave. Yes this man based his music on tequila women and real life stories. I have had the pleasure to listen to this one of a king composer and singer since childhood. My mom tells me stories of she as a child, personally being able to witness one of his concerts in
Tijuana Mexico. To any person who is just starting to listen to this man, hold on to your seat, because he will take you on a spiritual and emotional journey through the heart and soul of Mexico.!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Vol. I & II.......2004-04-26

If you are new to Mexican music you should definitely get to know Jose Alfredo Jimenez. They do not make singers and composers like Jose Alfredo anymore. The sentiments that Jose Alfredo emotes in his music transcend race and gender. I often hear other musicians play some of his songs in restaurants or parties, but it is never the same. If you've listened to the original renditions by Jose Alfredo, you know what I mean. Too bad he left us too soon.

5 out of 5 stars Aun despues de muerto, seguira siendo el Rey...........2003-11-23

This is Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez's first non-classical CD. He brings to the popular music of Latin America and Spain the same scrupulous musicianship, bright tone, and charm with which he approaches Donizetti and Rossini. Some of these songs are accompanied by full orchestra and some (such as "Ella" and "Mexico lindo y querido," for example) are with a shiny mariachi band, while a couple ("Fina stampa," "Bello Durmiente") have solo guitar as their backup. Florez has plenty of opportunity to show off his high notes--there are brilliant high Cs here and there--and his perfect vocal placement and portamento are most welcome. "Jurame," a sensual tango, is a fine example. While he can sing softly at times, Florez doesn't do quite enough with dynamics. A bit more variation would have been welcome, but he's very much in the spirit of this music. His "Granada" is stunning, and he gets the idiom of the "lounge music" numbers as well. His fans, and fans of music with this Latino tinge, will not be disappointed. --Robert Levine

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done.......2006-06-05

I bought this CD on a whim while on a road trip this weekend and boy wasn't it a pleasant surprise. Juan Diego Florez brings an elegance and beauty of timbre that I have not really heard in this genre. His phrasing is impeccable and he avoids the histrionics that most tenor CD's of this type are littered with. Technically, he has always been a marvel, but this CD seems to have more heart, soul and an excellent sense of timing than any of his prior CD's (and I'm a Rossini and bel canto nut).Hope he makes more like this! Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected and Old-Fashioned Latin Pop with a Gifted Florez in His Element.......2006-05-24

This is a splendid recording that represents blessed synchronicity between voice and material. The singer is Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez, and the repertoire here consists of popular early-to-mid-20th century Latin American and Spanish songs. Barely in his thirties, he produces a sweet, warm sound that combines effortlessly with a youthful vigor. Florez can also conquer impressive coloratura passages with superb breath control. All these attributes have served him well in bel canto roles, and now he uses the same technique in these romantic ballads and ranchero songs.

Pedro Elias Gutierrez's "Alma llanera" opens the disc with a flavorful, syncopated arrangement that would not sound out of place at the Tropicana nightclub in Havana, while the melancholy mariachi-style horns of Jose Alfredo Jimenez's "Ella" provides a nice Mexican atmosphere. There is a trio of songs by Maria Isabel Granda Larco from his native Peru all arranged impeccably by the singer himself - the openly romantic "La flor de la canela", the more somber "Bello durmiente" and best of all, the intimate-sounding "Fina estampa" with impressive fretwork by David Galvez. Florez dares to tackle the warhorses that are Agustin Lara's "Granada" and Ernesto Lecouna's "Siboney", and while he puts out the necessary stops, the songs are a bit too familiar to have full dramatic impact. The arrangement on "Siboney" especially gets a bit too bombastic with syrupy strings and pounding jungle drums.

Better are the decidedly old-fashioned "Princesita" with Daniel Binelli's tango-infused bandoneon (an accordion-like instrument) and Maria Grever's "Jurame", which sounds almost like a Mario Lanza operetta-style number from an MGM musical. My personal favorites come near the end of the recording - the tropically tinged ballad, Nilo Menendez and Adolfo Utrera's "Acquellos ojos verdes" and Chuco Monge's "Mexico lindo" with its dramatic tempo changes. With his stunning voice, Florez has such an affinity for this music that it is easy to overlook some of the overdone arrangements. This is a solid example of how a crossover recording can be done with the right blend of talent and music regardless of what genre we expect from a prodigious singer.

    3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2006-05-22

I read the reviews on your site and hearing this album was just a bit disappointing. I exected much more. His rendition of this type of song doesn't hold a candle to Domingo's. Many of the songs seems lifeless and rather amateurish. He should stick to what he does best and leave stuff like this to Domingo. He is however much better than other opera singers who try to sing this repetoire.

    5 out of 5 stars EXQUISITE.......2006-05-05

This recording is wonderfully exquisite. As an opera singer, I have sung these songs in recitals many times and listening to Juan has been like a master class. His technique is superb. His "En mi viejo San Juan" brought me great memories and got my eyes wet. This tenor has brought so much hope to belcanto and fine singing. Thank you very much, Juan. Best wishes and thousands of blessings.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-04-04

What a great album! Yes, this is how you do crossover!
This collection blows any other tenor's effort out of the water. I did not think that fully fledged operatic tenor could sing such swinging Latin music and sound so good. Domingo and his often tacky Broadway collections, and Carreras misguided attempts, it's all forgotten now. Florez is the new Mambo King.
I love all the songs, what incredible finds they are. There is only one rehashed song, the famous Granada, but Florez version is fantastic. I have to admit I do not love all of his opera singing, his quick vibratto works only intermittedly, and certainly he is very good in Rossini, but his Verdi is disappointing... not that it matters on this album. I did not know he started singing in the popular music field, but it certainly shows. Muchas gracias, Sr Florez for this fabulous gift, this Sentimiento Latino. Very cool and highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Quintessential.......2005-05-03

Its futile to argue about the merits of the music, its undeniable. The only thing I can add is that this particular compilation was materfully remastered especially in comparison to the 100 Canciones series which sounds hollow, distant & unbalanced.

    5 out of 5 stars 2 Exceptions to Rico's Comments.......2001-12-16

In "La Enorme Distancia", the distance referred to is not pysical or geographical, it is EMOTIONAL-in "No Me Amenazes", the singer is NOT begging his lover to leave, but for her to STOP THREATENING to leave him-as the title says, for he cannot stand the emotional uncertainty anymore. Otherwise, I enjoyed your review.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best collections.......2001-01-28

Add a star to the rating on this collection of "greatest hits." Probably every one of El Rey's most popular recordings on one double disc. This is the quintessential CD for lovers of ranchera music penned and performed by El Rey. Although I own most of these recordings in original vynyl it is handy to have them on CD. All the songs are written by El Rey and performed with the godfather of all Mariachi's, El Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan with arrangements and direction by el maestro Ruben Fuentes. There are classic songs of love like "Ameneci en tus brazos,""Un mundo raro,""Cuando vives con migo," and his great tribute song "Paloma querida." There are songs of many loves like "El siete mares" where he sings of having a woman in every port, of heartbreak as in "La Enorma Distancia" where he longs for his lover who is miles away and "No me amenaces," where he practically cries telling his lover to leave "pero no se ha ido." There are various Serenatas and songs that are about the pride of being Mexican but they have an appeal that is universal. Some songs may be considered by some to be "tears in your beer" music but El Rey has a way of making even the saddest of stories uplifting, it appeals to the macho in all males. Not one loser here just winners. My only complaint is that "El 15 de Septiembre" is missing. Also missing is the heartfelt "Gracias," his tribute song to all his fans, if you've never heard it you're missing something. He's written so many songs though that it is understandable. This is a superb disc that will get countless play from ranchera lovers. The accompanying booklet is brief but informative. Ranchera music never gets old and although Jose Alfredo Jimenez has long ago passed through this world his legacy lives on for new generations to discover and those familiar to savor. Fittingly enough the CD ends with "El Rey", Jose Alfredo Jimenez "sige siendo el rey."

5 out of 5 stars "El Padrino" of Mexican Music.......2001-01-25

Jose Alfredo Jimenez was the best all time composer of this type of music. All his songs contained in this collection have been sung by many different artist everywhere. Although he is no longer with us, his songs will always remain in our hearts. One of the best collection yet. I have all these already and really enjoyed them. They're sung from the heart!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums I've ever listened to.......2000-05-17

I've never heard anyone's songs touch the heart like do Jose Alfredo's. This album has 33 of his greatest songs, an amazing bargain for the price offered.

4 out of 5 stars Sings a wide range of works well.......2007-04-29

On this CD, Montserrat Caballe sings a wide range of arias. She runs the gamut from the bel canto works of Rossini and Bellini to the verismo works of Puccini and Mascagni, with Verdi in between. Overall, this is a nice introduction to her work. While I would not rate her among the very greatest of sopranos, she certainly ranks high in the pantheon of sopranos from the 20th century.

A brief sampling of her work on this CD. From Puccini's "Madam Butterfly," the CD begins with "Un bel di vedremo." She sings smoothly with a nice sound to her voice. Normally, when she increases the volume of her singing, the sound of her voice is still good. There are some occasional unpleasant sounds, but nothing notable. This is a nice dramatic rendering of an iconic aria. She hits the higher notes well.

Rossini's "William Tell" isn't much performed these days. But Caballe's version of "Sombre foret" suggests that some good operatic music is not played often enough. This is well sung; Caballe shows good vocal agility at the close.

"Son vergin vezzosa," from Bellini's "I Puritani," shows off her agile vocal technique. Early on, she floats a nice piano high note. In terms of technique, it is disappointing that the trills are not evident. In the end, this is a good version of this work, but not at the level of Jo, or Sills, or Sutherland. Outside of trills, ornamentation is good, but that is like saying that outside of its lack of speed, a sports car is a lot of fun to drive. Still, other ornamentation is well done, including appoggiaturas. The Wikipedia says (under ornamentation): "In music, ornaments are musical flourishes that are not necessary to the overall melodic (or harmonic) line, but serve to decorate or "ornament" that line. Many ornaments are performed as "fast notes" around a central note. . . . From the Italian word appoggiare, "to lean upon". . . . The long appoggiatura is important melodically and often suspend the principal note by taking away the time-value of the appoggiatura prefixed to it (generally half the time value of the note, though in triple time, for example, it might receive two thirds of the time). The added note (the unessential note) is one degree higher or lower than the principal note; and, if lower, it may or may not be chromatically raised (see mordent)." I'm not sure, as a musical nonexpert, that I fully understand the technicalities here, but Caballe does seem to exhibit nice ornamentation as per the above.

From "La Boheme," we have "Donde liata usci," very nicely done. This is prettily sung, for the most part, with only a rare unpleasant sound intruding. Finally, from "Turandot," "Signore ascolta." This is a smoothly sung version. From this CD, it is clear that Caballe can sing Puccini very well indeed. There is a nice piano high note at the close.

So, Caballe is clearly an excellent soprano although not, in my judgment, among the "all time greats."

5 out of 5 stars A great Caballe cd at a bargin price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1.......2005-12-23

I love this cd.I've been playing it often for three years.Included here are a selection of arias from Caballe's greatest complete recordings,as well as a few selections from her solo puccini arias cd.This is a great starter cd for someone who is curious about Caballe's art.All the selections on Diva, effortlessly demonstrate the supreme beauty of the Caballe sound. On this cd are definitive selections from Don Carlo,Macbeth,Tosca, and many more. Most of these arias she sings here are the most beautiful editions in recorded history. In Un macchia e qui tutta'ora from Macbeth she even sings like a dramatic soprano with extraordinary power,I feared for her vocal chords, and yes the beautiful sound was still there. She even ended the Macbeth aria with an ultra high pianissimo, high d flat. All the tracks are first rate.Great picture of Caballe on the cover too.

This is one of the first caballe cds I bought, and I still feel it makes a nice demonstration of the legendary caballe sound. This cd is full of examples of why caballe is considered by many to have the most beautiful voice in opera history. The selection from don carlos has a ends with a stunningly beautiful pianissimo,on non pianger, mia compagna. And her signore ascolta,is the most beautiful ever recorded ending with a 15 second high piannissimo, that has to be heard to be believed!

      3 out of 5 stars A Bit disappointed.......2003-10-15

I liked Caballe the minute I heard the two Liu arias in a Decca release. I found her voice sweet and her floating notes exceptional, yet I'm a little bit disappointed with this CD. I've bought this CD at least a month ago and have only listened to it once.

What I find distracting in this CD is the sloppiness in which she sung the arias. Upon listening to it, I keep wondering why she can't sound as wonderful as she did on that Decca CD that I heard her in. Part of the reason I guess is that I find other sopranos to sing some of this repertoire much better than Caballe. Apart from the aria in Turandot, I find Tebaldi to be a better puccinian, while I like a true coloratura or a dramatic in the other roles. Even her one Liu aria in this CD is not as good as the one I've owned, again sloppiness.

The high notes are another problem. She sounds excellent when she floats them, but when she sung them in full voice they sounded more like screams. I just couldn't get over these two humps in which a soprano of her caliber should not have done.

Better luck next time I guess.

3 out of 5 stars Bad sound :((((.......2001-03-07

The selection is very good, i just love her L'altra notte in fondo al mare but.... there's a noise, in my cd player i can't hear it, but when i hear it out loud it's unbearable! Barely can hear the orchestra.Montserrat is one of the best sopranos EVER in my opinion, but i would have saved my money to other cd

5 out of 5 stars Voice from heaven!.......2000-12-22

This is a wonderful collection of arias and a marvellous introduction to the World of Montserrat Caballe, indisputably among the most beautiful soprano voices I've ever heard! Amazing legatos, perfect endings and unbelievable pianissimos(listen to "o patria mia"). One does usually not expect high powerful notes from Montserrat Caballe. I must however say that this is not always the case. A lot of times this woman surprises me and produces some trully enchanting high notes! Even though she is not my most favourite Puccinian soprano (it's Renata Tebaldi), her arias in these operas are ravishing! Just listen to her "signore Ascolta".On the other hand, I adore her and find her really unforgettable when it comes to Donizetti, Bellini and sometimes Verdi. Especially some of her recordings of their operas are a must for every true opera fan. (for example her Lucrezia Borgia, her Norma and her Aida). Even if an aria is a bit boring, she manages to enrich it with her personal touch that makes the aria unforgettable! The touch that only the melting, creamy voice of Montserrat has.If you want to find out why Montserrat Caballe is one of the greatest sopranos of the world, here's the proof.

Originally released in 1964 on vinyl this a classic grouping of the fiery Amalia Mendoza and El Rey, Jose Alfredo. I immediatley purschased this when I saw it available again on compact disc. There are many reasons to include this CD in your collection. If you're a fan of Jose Alfredo or Amalia Mendoza than that should be reason enough, that they are both featured together is a magical moment to not be missed. Whether you are discovering or rediscovering the songs of Mexico this is truly a clasic pairing and recording. The songs are beautiful numbers where they either sing a duet or alternate solos. The duets are mixed with clarity and proportionally impeccable, each voice blending to create one new voice, Amalia y Jose Alfredo. Since the Mariachi Vargas deTecalitlan is "backing," the quality is of the highest standards under the direction of Ruben Fuentes. Jose Alfredo is in fine form, featured in equal billing and in rare form as he is performing mostly (8)songs that he did not pen. This further illustrates his versatitliy and magnificent interpretive voice. Listening to the two of them sing in harmony is a real treat, since they both had powerful voices and styles it is a match made in heaven. Amalia Mendoza matches El Rey's extended notes, note per note, neither faltering, both accentuating the lingering moments to create a frozen historical moment in time. It is like triple harmony at times, the duets, the solos and the Mariachi, all alternating in unison to create a synergistic musical fiesta. Twelve songs recorded nearly forty years ago to be enjoyed then, now and forever. A must have for El Rey fans.

The thirtysomething Argentinian tenor José Cura has been making quite a name for himself, and he is nothing if not controversial. His appeal is undeniable: matinee-idol good looks, a big, interesting, healthy, dark voice, great musical intelligence, and a gift for communication. But he is often badly prepared on stage and was recently severely booed at opera's mecca, La Scala. His last recording, in which he played Samson, found the top of his voice in tentative shape. But if the remarkable work here is indicative of what he can do, let's just hope that he stays on track. The disc opens, very unconventionally, with the Pagliacci "Prologue"--an aria for baritone! Cura sings it with great feeling and a truly burnished tone--indeed, he sounds like a baritone with easy top notes. But it is his tenorizing that is truly fine here. A series of arias by Mascagni, from the little-known Lodoletta to Cavalleria Rusticana (a truly sensitive reading of Turiddu's plea to his mother) is superb, well-nuanced, and richly told. The "Improvviso" from Andrea Chenier is simply magnificent, which makes one wonder why his phrasing is so choppy in the same character's final act aria, "Com'e un bel di di maggio." This brings up another issue: Cura is also the conductor here. Granted, this makes certain that he'll be singing precisely as he pleases, but more often than not, a conductorial voice is different from--and complementary to--the singer. Cura's judgment calls can be off, as they are in this second Chenier solo. But the singing's the thing, and Cura proves himself again and again--the Adriana, L'Arlesianna, and Fedora arias are also exhilarating. This is a major release, and tenor lovers will enjoy the singing as much as they will the unusual program. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Great verismo instincts, but has Cura declined since 1999?.......2007-04-16

On the strength of this superb CD of verismo arias, one would expect Jose Cura to have replaced Alagna as the 'fourth tenor.' He has a robust lower range, which he displays to remaarkable effect by singing the baritone aria, 'Si puo,' that raises the curtain in Pagliacci. The darkness of Cura's tone can be unsettling--I found him a strange Alfredo in La Traviata, for instance--but a lot of verismo demands powerful chest tones, and Cura has a fine tenor extension, if you think of it as that. Caruso began from a similar basis, I believe. And despite the criticisms, his conducting is quite acceptable--I doubt that anyone would have complained if the identity of the conductor hadn't been revealed on the cover.

With nothing but praise for this gorgeous recital, I'm sorry to report that Cura's promise seems unfulfilled eight years later. He hasn't made outstanding opera sets to date, although he has certainly made some glamorous DVDs. The voice has darkened further and the top notes aren't as secure. He doessn't express joy with his voice, which can make his portrayals rather somber. His dramatic flair seems subdued also. I don't keep up with every detail of Cura's career, but presently he seems overshadowed by Villazon, a much less powerful but equally artistic tenor. Let's hope the lull is only temporary.

      5 out of 5 stars Verismo at it's best.......2005-03-25

I am amazed at the many utterly and overly negative comments posted regarding this CD.

Let me be clear about this. Jose Cura is NOT, nor will he EVER be, a lyric tenor!
It is my impression that too many reviewers of this particular CD are not quite aware of the this fact, and tend to compare Cura to other, far more lyrical tenors.

See, that's the beauty of Grand Opera. The composers wrote different operas for different voice types. Cura's voice is perhaps the penultimate spinto voice of the modern opera scene.
It is upon this very precept that I base my evaluation of this CD.

      Now, on the actual CD.
With the exception of the fact that, indeed, Cura should have left the conducting to someone more qualified other than himself, this CD offers the listener the best Verismo selections available by a contemporary tenor.

In reviewing the comments regarding this CD I am reminded of the terrible critizism leveled upon the late Mario delMonaco during his lifetime.
Judging by contemprary reviews of the late Maestro, his was the worst tenor voice ever, and save for the sheer volume of his voice, and his Hollywood looks, he would never have had a career.
It wasn't until after delMonaco retired, and moreso until after his death, that the very critics that once denounced him as unworthy of his status, hailed him as one of the greatest dramatic tenors of all time!

I say this only to illustrate my point regarding the bad press this CD has received.
Having said this, Cura does an excellent job with this material.
His voice and phrasing often harkens memories of both delMonaco and Corelli, yet his interpretation is uniquely is own.

My favorite selections here are "Vesti La Giubba" from I Pagliacci, "Amor Ti Vieta" from Fedora, "Lamento Di Frederico" from L'arlesianna and "O Lola" as well as "Addio alla Madre" from Cavalleria Rusticana.
These selections highlight Curas prowess as the pre-eminent dramatic tenor of today beyond reproach.

On a final note, I often see that Cura is being hailed as Domingos' successor in both vocal quality and acting ability.
That's utter hogwash in that Curas' voice is much closer to that of delMonaco in both weight and power and acting wise, I doubt that we'll soon see another tenor as prodigiously gifted as was Domingo in that regard.

Jose Cura is a great DRAMATIC tenor folks. There's nothing lyrical about him and that's precisely why I appreciate his style and, subsequently, this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Hurrah for Yu Qiang Dai.......2005-01-28

It was a big shock to hear Yu Qiang Dai's debut cd. He is, I think, the best lirico-spinto tenor nowadays. He has a lovely voice, which is very well produced. The center is wonderful, the lower notes are good, the high notes are shining and of fantastic quality... the singing through the passage is very well handled. He is an itelligent musical interpreter and singer, with an interesting and appealing line and sense of style. Very good dynamic changes. He offers some of the absolutely best renditions of some arias (nessun dorma and cielo e mar, for example) that I have heard in many years.

He still has to work his Italian (specially the consonants) and his French. But there were great historical tenors with bigger idiomatical problems.

Despite taking spinto repertoire, Yu never pushes, never tries to make the voice sound darker than it is, everything is always under control, and he takes the chance to give very stylish renditions (for example, of una furtiva lagrima), which is strange for tenors who "want to sing spinto".
The tenor is a fantastic discovery, one of the best ones around. Actually, all my criticism goes to EMI and the production of the CD: no choirs, no solists (for example, for the aria of Cavalleria, where the mother should sing her line), and the acoustic "atmosphere" has made some people to doubt if Yu's voice is really as big as it seems (people who saw his Cavaradossi at Covent Garden say that it is very big, actually).
Not a the best production job by the people of EMI, but five stars (ten if possible) for the singer. Simply wonderful.

      3 out of 5 stars what a waste!.......2004-06-06

Initially I was excited: at last, I thought, here is a voice of Del Monaco weight but with infinitely more variety and color. But upon repeated hearing, I came to the conclusion that the varied tone was often simply the result of a poorly modulated voice in which the top and the bottom blended poorly at times with the mid-range. Worse yet, his foolish decision to serve as his own conductor does not serve him well. Often, as in the Fedora aria (which should have suited his voice well) he winds up chopping off the end of phrases because of his choice in tempos or perhaps the difficulty of accompanying oneself. Many of the interpretations are mannered--a good producer or conductor could have helped him avoid these lapses of judgement. The decision to lead with Tonio's prologue (a baritone aria) is embarrasing. Although he does indeed have a baritonal-sounding tenor at times, this doesn't make him a baritone by any stretch of the imagination. As a result, the aria is not even remotely satisfactory--it requires vocal resources a tenor just doesn't have (as well as dramatic resources Cura also does not reliably offer). I'm happy to have the arias from Lodoletta and Germania in modern sound (the Marcella aria really needs another voice type) and in spite of my criticism there are moments of real beauty in Cura's voice. Yet what a pity that humility, self-discipline,and good taste were not given to him in equal parts with beauty of voice. After a month with this record I begin to long for the direct, unselfconscious if rather crude sound of del Monaco. Any number of comparably voiced tenors of the last twenty years, like Giacomini or Martinucci, who were never recorded as much as they deserved were vastly superior to Cura in musicality and self-awareness. Behold the power of a pretty face!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing after his Puccini CD.......2001-05-20

I was favorably impressed with Cura's debut recital of Puccini arias (recorded June 1997), and on the strength of that favorable impression I bought his Verismo arias CD (recorded July 1999) and his Verdi arias CD (recorded Feb. 2000). I found both disappointing; neither is up to the standard of the Puccini disc. What is alarming is that I believe there has been audible deterioration in his voice in the short period of only two and three years between recording the Puccini disc and recording the next two. He is singing heavy roles usually, and advisedly, taken on by tenors later in their careers (e.g., Samson, Otello), and I hope this promising tenor won't sing himself out prematurely.
