It's one of the cruel ironies of music today that Billy Joel has been relegated to a kind of adult-contemporary hell, where his legacy is measured by soft-rock staples such as "Just the Way You Are," "Piano Man," and "New York State of Mind." To be sure, well-crafted ballads are a part of his legacy, but they're hardly the whole story, as this collection of his early and mid-period hits amply demonstrates. From the unbridled biographical boasting of "The Entertainer" and the ambitious storytelling of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" to the careening abandon of "Only the Good Die Young" and the thoughtful social commentary of "Allentown," Joel was as complete an artist as the last three decades have produced. --Daniel Durchholz

Billy Joel - A Decent Compilation.......2007-06-11
These days Billy Joel is often lumped in with Elton John as being remembered only for his top 40 radio hits and mushy ballads from the past several decades. Many people forget that like Elton, Joel put out some really strong albums in his early and mid-career. The guy was a songwriter's songwriter and not only could play a hell of a piano, but could be a very clever lyricist as well. Like Elton, Joel's output could be very inconsistent. For every "Goodnight Saigon" or "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" he wrote more throwaway stuff like "Uptown Girl" or "Tell Her About It". This two disc compilation captures all of his singles and some of his album tracks up to 1985. For the most part the material here is good, as you hear him move from an album oriented artist to a more commercial singles oriented one over the course of a little over a decade. The first disc is the best and starts out with some of the best cuts from his pre-superstar days. "Piano Man", "Captain Jack", "The Entertainer", and "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" are all great tracks and show a much different side of Joel than much of his later output. "The Stranger" is also included here. Although I was never crazy about the music or the chorus to this one, the lyrics are some of Joel's all time best. The rest of disc one starts dipping into Joel's big hit territory with the mush ballads "Just The Way You Are", and "She's Always A Woman" (written for his 1st wife who he would divorce not too many years later). The big hits "Only The Good Die Young" and "Moving Out" are also included. Disc two is not quite as strong. Three strong songs open the disc "My Life", "Big Shot" and "You May Be Right" all decent songs that got played to death on radio. Then it is back to mediocrity land with "It's Still Rock n Roll To Me" (I always think of the Weird Al Yankovic parody "It's Still Billy Joel To Me"), "Don't Ask Me Why", and "She's Got A Way". The best part of this disc is the three tracks from what is in my opinion Joel's strongest album "The Nylon Curtain". For this one Joel took a serious turn and came up with some really great songs. The 3 singles from the album are all represented here and they are all good ones. "Allentown" is a portrait of the Pennsylvania steel town after the industry pretty much pulled out. "Pressure" is another good one about the pressure of modern day life. "Goodnight Saigon" may be Joel's best all time work, and is a striking portrait of the Vietnam War. The last half of the CD covers Joel's Do Wop period with "Uptown Girl", "The Longest Time", and "Tell Her About It" (songs about his second wife whom he would eventually divorce). I am not much of a Do Wop fan so these don't do a lot for me. Two new (at the time) songs close the disc out and are pretty much both throw aways in my opinion. In the end this is a nice compilation of early Joel material. If you are looking for an overview this would be a good pick up.
Greatest Hits.......2007-05-11
Many "Greatest Hits..." albums and sets are lacking or down right suck. This set is great. The songs you want to hear the way you expect to hear them.
WARNING: Not the Complete Versions.......2007-03-31
I don't often get "greatest hits" collections, preferring instead to buy original albums, but in this case I did, because there are a handful of Billy Joel songs I wanted in my collection, but I didn't want to invest enough to purchase all of his albums. Unfortunately, they don't tell you that what you get here, at least in some instances, are the "single" versions of these songs, not the full-length versions from the original albums. Case in point: One of my favorite Billy Joel songs is "Just the Way You Are," but the version on this set cuts an entire verse. I haven't done comparisons on all of the other songs, but if they'd pull that on this song, they probably did so on others as well. It's incomprehensible to me; if someone wants Billy Joel songs, the odds are that they want the complete songs, not truncated re-edits.
I love it.......2007-01-11
I was familiar with a few of Billy Joel's songs, but I thought my disc collection would not be complete if I did not own a good sample of his material.
This product proposes a chronological approach and that suited me just fine. The two discs are loaded with all the classics. All of them wonderfully digitalized. I was able to appreciate the enormous range of Billy Joel. Great songwriter, great singer, great piano player. Although I am drummer, I do understand why people like him, or Sting, or Stevie Wonder, or Elton John, are on top of the music industry food chain. It is truly difficult to be able to master so many areas of music. And I am not talking about the performing, the band leading chores, the musical direction, production, publicity, all these extra skills to own in order to arrive where they are.
Getting one hit out is already a rare feat, but 35 or 40 like the ones presented in this compilation, require a truly great mind (something many one hit wonders wish to have).
I love this compilation. A great buy!

The Kinks' early singles set a new standard for raucousness. "Louie Louie" chord progressions and monosyllabic declarations of lurve (love definitely isn't a strong-enough word) drove "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," and "I Need You." Only maniacal cackles from guitarist Dave Davies could've heightened their simple eloquence--and he provided even those before his solos on "Got Me" and "All Day." But brother Ray's observational talents quickly began to show: the optimistic "Till the End of the Day" is shadowed by an unspoken wistfulness, while "A Well Respected Man," "Dedicated Follower of Fashion," and "Sunny Afternoon" remain among the most cutting portraits of Britain's upper-class strivers. Both of the band's main impulses continue to be immensely influential, while the enraged "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" merges them in a three-and-a-half-minute burst of cold fury that few bands would match until the Sex Pistols era. --Rickey Wright

Rockin' out with the Kinks.......2007-07-28
This disc brings together 18 songs from the early phase of the Kinks' career, when they were still primarily a singles band. The recordings range from 1964's "You Really Got Me" to "Sunny Afternoon," which came out in 1966. As such, it's an ideal snaphot of a great rock band in its rawest, grittiest incarnation, bashing out two-and-three chord ravers with boundless energy and ample power. The afformentioned "You Really Got Me" is simply one of the greatest rock 'n' roll songs of all time, a propulsive pounder with an electrified vocal and a guitar solo that paints the sky. And it's not the only great recording here: "All Day And All Of The Night" is relentlessly catchy and unmistakeably cool, with its grinding guitars and salivating vocals. There's also the explsive "Come On Now," the melodic rush of "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy," and the oddly touching "Set Me Free." The biting sarcasm of "A Well Respected Man" shows off Ray Davies' early talant for social commentary, and "Till The End Of The Day" is a rollicking ode to rock 'n' roll rebellion. Basically, it's a great collection of rock songs from a great, great group in its early, rockin' prime. Rock fans, pick this baby up!
1964-1966 IS THE KINKS' MOST SHINING MOMENT DURING THE ROARING 1960's GOLDEN ERA OF THE BRITISH INVASION. .......2007-07-02
I will be writing a review on the legendary greatest hits masterpiece compilation album entitled "THE KINKS GREATEST HITS" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of England's pride and joy's and one of Britain's most favorite sons, T-H-E K-I-N-K-S! "THE KINKS GREATEST HITS" was originally released in 1989 on Compact Disc on the Rhino Records label which is licensed from Precision Records & Tapes, Limited. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
THE KINKS will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most all-time greatest anthems ever. Like THE BEATLES and THE ROLLING STONES, THE KINKS were deep into Rhythm & Blues but also knew how to ROCK! Believe it or not, I have heard numerous music critics say that THE KINKS are responsible for inventing Heavy Metal and not THE BEATLES, THE CREAM, LED ZEPPELIN or BLACK SABBATH. I have my opinions but I'll leave it up to you to decide. When brothers, lead vocalist and frontman Ray Davies and guitarist Dave Davies joined forces with bassist Pete Quaife and drummer Mick Avory, the line-up would be complete and the stage was set for the birth of THE KINKS.
THE KINKS have recorded many great songs and albums through the years to highly critically acclaim while their main staying power which began in 1960's, has also proven to be consistant above your average Rock n' Roll band life expectancy standards resulting in THE KINKS staying together longer than expected. However, THE KINKS longevity would truly be tested and will also forever be remembered for the famous legendary fights between the brothers Ray & Dave Davies. Their fights were so bad that many fans as well as the music critics have wondered how THE KINKS even lasted as long as they did. For a long period from 1964 up to the late 1980's, THE ROLLING STONES and THE KINKS were the only two bands from the beginnings of the British Invasion that remained and were still together.
Of course there would be other bands that would surface from 1965 onward into the late 80's such as THE WHO and PINK FLOYD. THE KINKS would do all of their best recordings and deliver their best hit songs during the 1964-1966 period. Which brings me to the legendary compilation album I'm about to review for you today. "THE KINKS GREATEST HITS" highlights and chronicles their greatest hits from the 1964-1966 period. In my opinion, "THE KINKS GREATEST HITS" is without a doubt, a true testament of the creative brilliance and musical creativity of four extremely talented musicians. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, way far ahead of their time.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of THE KINKS to speak for itself and back it up musically as it was originally truly intended. "THE KINKS GREATEST HITS" begins with the a*s kicking Hard Rockin' anthem that forever influenced VAN HALEN, "You Really Got Me," the merciless a*s kicking Hard Rockin' anthem "All Day And All Of The Night," the slow and powerful Hard Rockin' anthem "Set Me Free," the fast and Bluey mild Rocker "Who'll Be The Next In Line," the incredible Hard Rockin' anthem "Come On Now," the energetic and Bluesy Rocker "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy," the a*s kicking Hard Rockin' anthem "I Need You," the a*s kicking Hard Rockin' anthem "Till The End Of The Day," the beautifully slow Rockin' anthem "Tired Of Waiting For You," the uplifting acoustic Rocker "A Well Respected Man," the breathtaking Hard Rocker "You Do Something To Me," the groundbreaking mild Rocker "You Still Want Me," the slow smooth mellow Rocker "Stop Your Sobbing," the beautifully slow and well arranged mild Rocker "Something Better Beginning," the blistering Hard Rocker "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion," the mellow turned Hard Rocker "I'm Not Like Everybody Else," the a*s kicking and magnificent Hard Rockin' anthem that also inspired and influenced VAN HALEN, "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" and the a*s kicking slow soothing Hard Rockin' anthem "Sunny Afternoon." May I also add that after listening to all of these songs, these songs do sound like early Hard Rock in diapers.
I would like to highly recommend this legendary compilation album for everyone of all ages to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This album is early Hard Rock in diapers. If you like VAN HALEN and wonder where they got their sound from, you will definitely enjoy and appreciate this album. You may also want to research further into the many numerous KINKS greatest hits compilation albums that are available today. By doing this, you will find the album that is right for you and suits your musical tastes and needs. You will also have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own KINKS personal music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
In closing, THE KINKS have had their fair shares of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their long and glorious career. THE KINKS have also endured and persevered through numerous changes in band personnel and record labels throughout the 80's and 90's. As of now, the Davies brothers are all that is left from the original and genuine KINKS line-up. THE KINKS have received the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. With this in mind, it is safe to say that THE KINKS have forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and their many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. There will also be many more new tales and stories in THE KINKS legend and legacy that will still need to be told and written in new pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you Ray, Dave, Pete and Mick. Thanks for the great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. GOD SAVE THE KINKS! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Where is Volume 2? .......2005-09-22
The best compilation out there capturing the Kinks in their early manic singles heyday...just before their emergence as "serious" songwriters and their turn into one of the greatest album bands ever..great package, hard to find now but great for the casual listener and those Kink heads...Rhino quality like always is there.
Still a lot of fun after almost 40 years!.......2005-02-28
How can you miss with tunes like YOU REALLY GOT ME and ALL DAY AND ALL THE NIGHT?! True, they do seem a bit childish now, but still as wild and crazy as ever! Their unique slurring chord bridging gave their early songs a really brazen style. My personal favorite is SUNNY AFTERNOON, one of the funniest descriptions of a lazy, burnt out Englishman ever (even if not quite Graham Green or Oscar Wilde)..So definitely worth checking out, even if the over raucous style does get a bit much after a while.
The only time I feel all right is by your side.......2004-02-16
This is called Greatest Hits, but it only contains songs from 1964-66. This is great stuff, though, so I don't have a problem with that. The Kinks were one of the top bands of the era, and Ray Davies was a great songwriter. A lot of his songs have a wicked sense of humor; like "A Well Respected Man", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" and "Sunny Afternoon". With all the attention Ray gets for his songwriting, the rest of the band often gets overlooked. They were a really good group, especially Dave Davies on guitar. The odd thing about this CD is that the songs are in mono, except for "Stop Your Sobbing", which is in stereo. I think they should have used the mono version of that song too, just for consistency. I would highly recommend this CD for British Invasion fans.

Great '80s Compiliation!.......2005-12-12
Ah the '80s!! Cool videos on MTV, hot chicks in tight fitting clothing and great music! If you like heavy metal music then you will love this great collection. What makes this CD great is not only are the best known bands from the '80s here (Poison, Scorpions and Ratt) this CD also contains some awesome tunes (Never Enough and Blind In Texas) from lesser known bands (L.A Guns and W.A.S.P.). If you remember how fun it was to rock out in the '80s or want to see just how great it was then pick up this terrific collection!
Good compilation of 80's metal.......2004-03-27
I think that this CD out of the Youth Gone Wild collection has the best known songs and you sometimes hear those songs on classic rock radio and the best known hits on this CD is Scorpions' Rock You Like a Hurricane, Poison's Talk Dirty to Me, Quiet Riot's Cum on Feel the Noize and Twisted Sister's Were Not Gonna Take It, the other noteworthy songs is Motorhead's Ace of Spades, Krokus's Screaming in the Night, WASP's Blind in Texas and Ratt's Lay it Down, the only song that doesn't fit in the category is Rainbow's Street of Dreams cause the song is too mellow to be on here, I would've chose Death Alley Driver instead or Stone Cold, I would love to put Rainbow's Man on the Silver Mountain but that song originally came out in 1975 and there would be 2 songs sung by Ronnie James Dio on this compilation but don't let that discourage you, if you're a casual fan of old school metal then this CD is a must have.(...)
bang for your buck.......2004-01-08
here we have a compilation of songs that you wouldn't run out and buy on the original releases.the quiet riot,dio,w.a.s.p. and accept stand out as the strongest tracks and are arguably the best from the respective bands.y&t and rainbow are also strong but not the best from those two bands.you could do without the poison and the motorhead, but thats pretty obvious.
80s Hair Metal at its Best.......2002-06-19
This is one of a set of four compilation discs which do this genre of music a huge favor by showcasing some of the best music of the time. Many high points! This CD, along with the other three volumes will not disappoint.
Heavy Metal Hits of the 80's, Vol. 1 (various artists).......2000-09-20
This is a Very good CD if you like good easy listening heavy Metal. It has alot of the best hits. I own it, and am buying it for my brother who likes, and wants it as well.

Customer Reviews:
The Most popular rock album ever! .......2007-01-04
This album is the most popular in Rock, ever! They tried to pull it off the shelves but the cries were too loud. It is also re-mastered.
Queen greatest hits........2006-11-10
I love this CD as it contains all the best hits of the grpoup especially Bohemian Rhapsody.
The best of Queen's compilation albums.......2006-04-17
The original Queen Greatest hits album , first released in 1981 , this was the album that first got me hooked on Queen when I was 12.
It includes all of Queen's top 20 hits between 1974 and 1980.
Personal favourites include:
The classic rock opera masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody (1975)
The debonair Killer Queen (1974)
The rollicking Fat Bottomed Girls (1978)
The laidback You're My Best Friend (1975)
The glam rock Seven Seas of Rhye (1974)
The funky Don't Stop Me Now (1978)
The hypnotic Somebody To Love (1976)
and the whimsical Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy (1976)
Songs that should have been included are Keep Yourself Alive (1973)
Doin Allright (1973)
and
39 (1975).
Still the best of Queen's compilation albums.
If you haven't seriously explored Queen's earlier work this is a good place to start and should get you hooked on all their albums from the 1974 to 1980 period.
Does not include any song that is less than superb!.......2006-02-21
Queen rocked to stardom in the 1970s, with Freddie Mercury's (1946-91) silky voice leading. They produced many excellent songs, and were popular worldwide, right up until Freddie Mercury's death from AIDS in 1991. Throughout my youth, I loved Queen's sound, and their many wonderful songs - and now I have them again!
This fantastic album contains all of Queen's greatest songs, including Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, Save Me, and of course We Will Rock You & We Are The Champions. Yes, that's right, this album has the greatest Queen hits, and does not include any song that is less than superb! If you are a fan of Queen then this is definitely an album you must get. Heck, even if you just love great rock `n' roll in general, you will love this CD.
This is a great CD, one that I cherish and would not be without. I give this album my highest recommendations!
Mine is one from 1981.......2005-03-27
Darn when cd's first came out what you where looking for was hard to find. And Queen was at the top of my list to get something into my budding cd collection. I finally found this at our local record store as the vinyl was slowly circling its drain due to cd's. And yes the first Queen I saw on the shevles was this import. Darn glad I got it that day even though I considered the price steep due to it being an import it still took the cd industry some years to get all of the choices you have now days I do not need another queen this on did me fine though its play list is different from what they have here tracks 1 - 6 are the same the rest go like this
7.Don't Stop Me Now
8.Save Me
9.Crazy Little Thing Called Love
10.Somebody To Love
11.Now I'm Here
12.Good Old-Fashoned Lover Boy
13.Play The Game
14.Flash
15.Seven Seas Of Rhye
16.We Will Rock You
17.We Are The Champions
What can I say this order works for me. And if you want more Queen than this hey go for it I do not blame you good stuff from a great band that started in the 70's. No one else like them. I still remeber driving down the road to tapes I made from the vinyl I had of them.

Marc Bolan: Glam Rock's "Main Man".......2000-03-20
Let's get this out of the way up front. This CD should have been called "Great Hits 1970-1977 The A-Sides" and included "Ride a White Swan" (which went to No. 2 in the UK), "Hot Love" and "Get It On," (both No. 1 in the UK, and retitled "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" in the US, it was Marc Bolan's only stateside hit). It was after all in 1970 that Bolan shortened the name from Tyrannosaurus Rex and dropped the folky mysticism (including album titles like "My People Were Fair and Had Stars in Their Hair, But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brow") and picked up the electric guitar and became one of the leading proponents of the glam rock movement. [I have a 1985 cassette "T. Rextasy," on Warner Brothers that contains these three songs plus some of his later singles--evidently Demon had some licensing problems with these earlier songs.]
But even without those three songs, if you already own "Electric Warrior" (the album containing "Bang a Gong (Get It On"), this makes a terrific companion album without having to buy the rest of his mid-Seventies catalog.
This CD begins with Bolan's third and fourth consecutive UK No. 1's: "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru," both songs containing the fuzz-chord riffing that became his trademark sound on all of his best hits. And (in the UK at least) the hits kept coming. "Children of the Revolution," "Solid Gold Easy Action," "20th Century Boy" and "The Groover" all went Top Ten. "Truck on Tyke" wasn't much of a stylistic change, but it was his first single of the Seventies not to hit the Top Ten--and at No. 12 it would be the highest charting single of the rest of his career.
Fans of Marc Bolan, who died in a car accident in 1977, will find this CD essential listening. While his later-Seventies albums would contain spotty material, "The Slider" and "Tanx" (both now available with bonus tracks) would make excellent additions to your T. Rex collection as well. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The Very Best of Bolan minus one.......1999-12-14
T. Rex is right on track with this set. How Bang a Gong didn't make it, I'll never know, but otherwise there isn't a loser in the bunch. Great glam rock from the Master that Bowie himself wrote about in Ziggy Stardust.

Party All The Time.......2005-06-15
This Cd is a must buy for one reason. Eddie Murphy's Fabulous hit single Party all the time. This Great Song isn't availible anywhere else. The Song Is Catchy and fun to dance to. Eddie Murpghy has quite a good voice which is shown on this track. Its too bad the he threw in the towel on his singing career because we could have seen some pretty great stuff from him. However You must Get this cd for that song. A Must Have. Michael Jacson is also overated as a musician, but eddie murphy, Its Quite Awesome. So Check it out and buy tis. ESSESNTIAL!
I bought this as part of a 2 disk set for about the same $.......2000-09-04
I rated this average because compilations as a general have 10 tracks and 2 or 3 usually are filler. This one is not much different. I bought this because the cuts are some of the more obscure hits I remember playing on the radio in the mid 80's. Look for the 2 CD set that contains Platinum #'s A28967 and A28968.

nothing unheard of.......2005-09-02
this album makes worthwile listening exspecially to someone who is new to 80s music scene otherwise this is a very famaliar list of songs
Not Bad For A Cheapie.......2003-03-19
None of the songs here are strange, many of these songs are available on other compilations, but not at the price offered here. The mastering isn't bad, really, but Christopher Cross sounds like he's in a wind tunnel, way too much reverb here, kids.
"Total Eclipse Of The Heart" is presented in it's full album length, as are all the songs here. I'm not a fan of single edits, this cd is more worthwhile to me, I don't have to seek out numerous compilations for album length versions of the songs I love.
