EXTRA BALL is a recent discovery in the field of Polish jazz. Although its young members used to appear as still half- amateurs, the group started openly at festival jazz on the Oder-River'' in 1974 at this most important Polish jazz competition the Extra Ball won the second and a year later first prize. Also the musicians who make it up won awards at that same Wroclaw competition: Jan Cichy in 1974, Jaroslaw Smietana in 1974 and 1975, Wladyslaw Sendecki in 1975, and Andrzej Olejniczak in 1978. Their concerts were received very warmly by the critics, one of whom wrote: This is the only group in this country which can rank just behind the Namyslowski's group (JAZZ, No 5/1 97.6). These opinions of the critics have coincided with the feelings of the audiences with whom the Extra Ball have become recently very popular.
Their first record includes eight pieces by J. Smietana and W. Sendecki. Each of them recorded themes attracts attention to some qualities of the group and of its particular members. The title piece ''Birthday'' is probably the most perfect as regards the composition. A lyrical tone of the saxophone is ''painting'' here the theme, while the guitar of the group's leader, J. Smietana organizes the piece harmonically and rhythmically. In its middle section the piece includes a beautiful quotation of a Silesian folk-song which fuses into the whole. . .
''Maryna's Dance'' reminds us that this is Polish jazz. And the both exotic and familiar sounding kujaviak of the 1 1/8 meter indicates that contemporary jazz can draw its inspiration not only from the Balkan folklore (Ellis!) In "Without Return" on the other hand, the group shows us how deeply it is rooted in the jazz tradition. The classically constructed theme indicates that Parker's music remains to the young jazzmen still most attractive.
Of special interest here is the tenorist A. Olejniczak who in solo parts, too, inspires his partners to a group creation.
''A Journey to the Mountains'' - probably the most popular of their themes so for - presents the group, offers a lyrical introduction, in a dynamic jazz-rock. It was just this music which won the ''E-B'' most enthusiastic fans, especially among the devotees of ''Return to forever'' . . .
''The Seven'' also belongs to the Group's earlier achievements (it was played at the "Jazz on the Oder-River'' competition). One can notice in it a ''Hendersonion'' tone of the tenor and, above all admire a virtuoso solo a capella of the electric piano, concluded by a beautiful, lyrical motive.
''The Lucky Unlucky-Man'' framed by joyful sounds of nature, gives us a sample of W. Sendecki's talent.
''Blues for Everybody'' takes us back again into the past. Without limitations of time and arrangement, W. Sendecki (this time playing the classical piano) and J. Smietana are enjoying a free and joyous improvisation. Both the instruments used in it and the virtuosity of the performers are reminiscent of the J. Pass O. Peterson duet.
The theme "Hengelo Almelo Deventer'' concludes the record and although one must stress in it the solo parts of J. Smietana and J. Cichy, one cannot fail to admire the accomplished collective playing as well. One may be surprised of the diversity of numbers on this record - a summary of the group's output so far - and yet this is, throughout and most consistently, the music of ''Extra Ball".

    5 out of 5 stars from albums's original 1979 line notes:.......2007-02-10

This is already the second long-playing record of the Cracow group ''Extra Ball'', released in the series Polish Jazz. So the group must be well-known by now to the jazz lovers in this country. Another proof of their popularity is both the success their previous recordings hove had (their last LP "Birthday" was sold out in numbers uncommon in Poland) and the unusual interest which the concerts of ''Extra Ball'' have been arousing at home and also abroad.
''Extra Ball'' was formed in 1974. It was founded and is still led by the major Polish jazz guitarist, Jaroslaw Smietana. It is his artistic conceptions and energy that animates the group, made up of representatives of the generation of 1970's who now prevail in the world of Polish jazz.
The music of "Extra Ball" has been presenting in its recordings so for reflects the typical fascinations of these last years and also a jazz maturing. So the first LP ("Birthday" SX 1414) which included the sum of their youthful achievements, was eclectic - although already marked by the artistic personality of the performers. The two later records released on Poljazz label indicate that J. Smietana and his co-players interests have been shining towards the main, post-Coltrane stream of jazz. Their resignation from effectual jazz-rock rhythms went together with a relish for instrumental sound, with on increased freedom of improvisation, briefly with the characteristics which form the backbone of contemporary jazz.
The disc I am now recommending to the music-lovers presents the ''Extra Ball'' after over five years of their common artistic journey. They set out on it under the leadership of J. Smietana. Apart from him they are: Adam Kawonczyk, a full of imagination composer and at the some time a discreet, sparing in virtuoso effects trumpeter; Marian Bronikowski, the precise and musical percussionist; Wojciech Groborz, the pianist, concentrated, suggesting to his colleagues interesting harmonies with taste and frugality; Antoni Dabski, the bassist, propelling the rhythmical group while accompanying watchfully the melodists. There has been also put on this record the sound of saxophones of Janusz Muniak, now probably the greatest Polish jazzman who in 1 979 has often co-operated with ''Extra Ball''. To be noted is in this respect the almost ideal fusion of the guest soloist with the group. Most of the numbers recorded on this disc are compositions by J. Smietana and A. Kawonczyk. From ''The Cracow Jazz Festival" through the ''sharp'' title number ''Go Ahead", the relaxed and singing theme of "I Love You Anna", to the "Airport", rich in its dense and rhythmical texture - the "Extra Ball's" repertory demonstrates both the authors' inventiveness and the fine feeling for collective music making. Even tine solo miniatures of J. Smietana (Coltrane's ''Naima'') and of A. Kowonczyk (''Sepia'') do not alter the impression that we are listening to a group of musicians who are in every respect equal, understand each other perfectly and shore the same feeling. And these precisely are the features of real jazz.

5 out of 5 stars High calibre soukouss at it's best.......2004-01-19

This album is one of the greatest soukouss albums of all time and one that every fan of the genre is supposed to have in their collection. It was the last album the supergroup did before Diblo Dibala left. The only thing I hate about it is that it's too short-there's only 8 songs and the total playtime is about 40 minutes, and it leaves you crying for more. The music itself is the highly addictive up-tempo hip swinging super guitar kwassa-kwassa of the early 90's. I'm hooked.

      Product Description

A shiny new quartet is here in SF delivering buoyant, jangly guitar pop that initally seems quite straightforward. But wait! Plan To Pink are gonna keep you on your toes with their fair share of unexpected twists and turns in both tempo and style. They move confidently from rollicking feisty punk pop to almost-lullaby mellowness often within the span of one tune. Tandem singers Andria Alefhi and Jaime Borschuk keep right in pace, shifting their vocal delivery (often quite drastically) with grace and ease. Their vocals alternately bring to mind Throwing Muses and Helium. Add some xylophone, viola and a dash of cornet and clarinet for good measure. 10 Songs.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Album title is self-explanatory.......2000-06-19

Compiled by the publishers of the Multiball zine, at least some (and possibly all) of these tracks originally appeared on 7"s which came free with each issue. And since the zine itself is about pinball and rock and roll, the 7"s had rock bands singing about pinball. The music is quite varied, and as with most compilations, so is the quality. However, the good songs are good enough to make up for any weak spots. Strong points included tracks from Mick Collins' Dirtbombs, The White Stripes, Bobby Conn, and the Fireballs of Freedom, all more or less garage punk tunes, althought the one man band number was interesting as well.
