5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful.......2005-08-07

Kiri Te Kanawa has one of the most beautiful operatic voices and no cd displays this better than Canteloube: Chants d'Auvergne. These folk songs, sung in a french dialect, are sung perfectly by Kiri Te Kanawa. You do not need to understand the language to feel the emotions the songs evoke. This is a simply beautiful cd and Kiri is flawless.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Sublime.......2004-02-27

What is it about these wonderful songs that tend to bring out the best in some of the world's finest sopranos?

There are so many fine recordings of these songs.

The great Frederica Von Stade recorded a quite mesmerizing selection of the Auvergne songs at about the same time as Dame Kiri. There is the lovely recording by the legendary Victoria De Los Angeles, a selection of the songs many of us grew up on.
There is the seminal first complete recording (and then some, as I recall) by the late Natania Davrath, a much under-appreciated artist who, in many ways, is responsible for the popularity these songs enjoy today. Even Anna Moffo recorded a lovely handful of the songs in the 60s conducted by no less than Leopold Stokowski!

And then there is Dame Kiri. We know her. We love her. We have come to expect the best from her. We have come to always expect more from her, in fact, than from just about anyone else.

So unfair. We expect her to jump the musical hurdles of our emotional connections to music and art in a way we expect from few others.

And yet she so seldom disappoints. Is this the absolute best recording of the Chants d'Auvergne ever? Such a personal choice. Who is to say?

I can tell you this, once I heard this truly remarkable set, which has literally sent chills up my back since the the first time I heard it all those years ago, I knew my search for the recording of these songs I would keep near me forever was over.

Here is an interpretation combining, in equal measure, patrician elegance with almost peasant-like eloquence. She renders song after song, some deceptively complicated, with a divine simplicity that simply defies the imagination.

I don't know how Dame Kiri achieved this miraculous feat. It must have come from the heart, because it certainly goes to mine.

And finally, it would be unthinkable not to give credit to the exquisite playing of the English Chamber Orchestra and the always sensitive collaboration of conductor Jeffrey Tate.

5 out of 5 stars LUSH AND PASSIONATE!.......2003-03-09

These traditional songs from the Auvergne region of France, arranged and orchestrated by Joseph Canteloube, are so intensely beautiful that when I requested a classical radio station to play some of them, motorists stopped on the highway to phone in their thanks.

I first heard a selection of these songs 30 years ago, performed by Anna Moffo, and fell in love with them. It's wonderful to find a complete recording of all 5 series on this 2 CD set, sung by Kiri te Kanawa with enormous talent and verve. Whether the mood is passionate, playful, mocking, tender, mournful or-an emotion few composers have ever captured-helpless with pleasure, these pieces have one thing in common: they are the work of a master orchestrator at the height of his powers, using the fullest resources of the modern orchestra. You will not find more beautiful music than this!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2001-08-28

In my opinion, this is one of Kiri's better recordings. Her voice, while always gorgeous, is fresh and light here, and her interpretation, while not riveting, is certainly not boring. Musically, this is a wonderful collection, very romantic and lush in sound. A very worth-while recording.

5 out of 5 stars Only Kiri.......2001-07-13

Dame Kiri te Kanawa has just the voice and character to make this music live. Her voice has a spiritual quality (as opposed to a human quality) that suits the fantasy and seductive qualities of the music. However, her characterization is not void of human qualities, a reminder that these are human feelings. The orchestra under Jeffrey Tate copes very well with the virtuosic writing for woodwinds and stratospheric strings. I heard Renee Fleming's recent interpretation of Bailero and the characterization was more human. Their voices are quite similar, but if you want angelic qualities, Kiri is the angel.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice introduction to the work of a great soprano.......2007-07-13

This 2 CD set is a terrific introduction to the body of work of Victoria de los Angeles. As the "liner notes" point out: "She was an artist who brought individuality and a sense of joy to everything she performed. . . ." And this is not hyperbole. She was a top soprano in the middle part of the twentieth century.

Some cuts exemplify her art:

"Un bel di" is a ravishing version of this well known aria. She demonstrates a rich voice with fine musicality. This is a ravishing version of this aria. The singer displays good vocal control. There are nice transitions across the registers.

"Si, mi chiamano Mimi" is another well known work for sopranos. Again, nicely done. She appears (to me anyhow) to catch the spirit of Mimi very nicely indeed.

From "La Traviata," she essays "E strano. . .Sempre Libera." This is an affecting version. She does not have the coloratura armamentarium that some have brought to bear on this aria, but she does a fine job nonetheless. She seems to capture the desperate spirit of Violetta in "Sempre Libera."

Rossini's "Una voce poco fa" is a nice tour de force for sopranos. De los Angeles does a nice job here. This is a work from the Bel canto repertoire, but she does well. She shows vocal agility and captures the spirit of the work. This is an affecting, charming version. There is some occasional vocal harshness, but not a serious issue.

From "Carmen," "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle." Richly and nicely sung.

Her range on this CD is worth noting: from Puccini and Verdi to Wagner to Rossini to Gounod.

And then another of her specialties--songs. She does a nice turn with the Spanish song "Malaguena." Then, in a nice twist, she accompanies herself on guitar in "Adios Granada." I'm not normally so excited about songs, but in this case I found her work enchanting.

So, if you want to get a sense of the artistry of Victoria de los Angeles, this is an excellent starting point. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The very best performance by Victoria de los Angeles.......2006-09-13

Is the recording on Allegro records of her performance of Madame Butterfly in New Orleans in 1954, not the Rome recording. She is simply radiant, perfect, a voice truly that is a victory for the angels. Unbelievably marvelous.

5 out of 5 stars In Memoriam: A Tribute To The Late Victoria.......2005-02-01

Victoria De Los Angeles died Saturday of heart failure at the age of 83 in Barcelona, Spain. The world of opera mourns her loss. She was a gifted soprano and a wonderful human being. On stage, she was able to directly speak to her audience and communicate with them in a very special and rare way that is not always seen today. She never hid herself behind a facade nor distanced herself from fans and audiences. She was born to sing opera. It was in her blood. This album showcases De Los Angeles in her most memorable and successful roles. Victoria De Los Angeles was one of the first singers from Spain to win worldwide acclaim. Others would follow- Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballe. De Los Angeles is showcased in this album which may also serve as a tribute to the now late soprano.

Her voice was essentially full lyric with some spinto. Hearing her renditions of "O Mio Babbini Caro"- a signature soprano role, as well as "Ebben Ne Andro Lontana" from La Wally and her performances as Mimi, one is clearly treated to the truest form of a pure lyric soprano. Her voice is spunned gold, with sweet, warm, feminine textures. Her reperotire remained in the Italian and French. Of course, being Spanish, she was a leading singer in Spanish Lieder and romantic ballads. Her Art Songs in Spanish are full of elegance and grace. A champion of obscure composers, she sang and recorded recitals that featured the works of lesser known composers, though strictly Lieder and Folk/Art Song.

Victoria De Los Angeles is fortunately a well-documented artist. Some film footage exist of her performances. I seem to recall that there exists a taped performance of her Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata. She excelled in the lyric roles of Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. Her Madame Butterfly is a pure lyric rendition, with less of the dramatic intensity other singers have given the role- i.e. Leontine Price, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, etc. But her Butterfly is actually the way the role ought to be sung. It's a voice of grace, naivete and above all romance that must colorize Butterfly. The dramatic intensity only makes her sound older and madly passionate. She is only a fifteen year old girl who has been deceived and betrayed. She must remain youthful sounding. De Los Angeles does justice to the truest form of Butterfly. She was thrilling in French and Italian operas and her Spanish songs were briliant and beautiful.

Victoria will always be remembered. She was a unique and talented artist of the lyric repertoire. Her pure, lovely voice was like an angel's. There will never be another Victoria De Los Angeles. With her death, the end of an era also passes. In particular, I will always remember one reported incident. She was about to make her first recital in America but she had no accompanist- pianist/guitarist etc. When asked how she would handle this, she remarked: "Well I brought my guitar with me". And she proceeded to accompany herself with the guitar.

5 out of 5 stars the genius of de los angeles.......2004-02-14

the incomparable de los angeles combines exquisite sound and nuance to the world of superb singing. her mastery of a variety of styles is astounding and yet it always sounds natural.her magic will live forever.

5 out of 5 stars A n angelic voice.......2004-02-06

De los Angeles' ability to sing with elegance and style has rarely been equalled and never been surpassed. She's the greatest Charlotte in "Werther", the most tender Santuzza in "Cavalleria Rusticana" and the most sumptuos Nedda in "I Pagliacci". Her Lieder-Recordings are legendary, my favourites are the Spanish ones of course. What a piano-culture and what a velvet sound! Get this set, it's cheap and it has GREAT singing!

5 out of 5 stars Best of Lucio Battisti.......2006-11-06

This is the best of the best. If you are a fan of his cantautore style, his soulful combination of folk and blues, this is the collection to get. Battisti's guitar was stilled forever by his untimely death, but his music lives in this CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice collection.......2005-06-23

I love this set... It is put together very well and the sound is awesome. For those who've never heard anything by Battisti - this is a great purchase; a collection of his early work with Mogol - the music that made Lucio so famous in Italy... Brilliant. Many thanks to him for all the love and dedication he gave to this world as a musician...

5 out of 5 stars I Found It Sublime........2002-04-05

I recently acquired a large hard drive for my computer and set about loading my favorite CDs for instant listening while working in my home office. In that process I came upon this CD, but do not remember buying it. To be able to quickly jump from track to track, I loaded it and expected to make a quick decision whether to keep it or not, expecting the not. (I believe that I ordered this CD due to the similarity of the title with a CD of Jean Ferrat's that is quite special to me.)
WOW! Was I wrong! So wrong that I don't mind admitting it.
Victoria de los Angeles is one of the greats. Her command of her voice is superb. Her phrasing leaves me breathless. The previous reviewer called her voice too heavy for these songs. While I have not heard the works he/she noted, I did not have that reaction. The selection of works is marvelous. I cannot recommend this CD higher. I recommend it for the true classic connoisseur, for the person who 'just' likes classics, and for the person who likes some classics but not all and needs to hear a recognizable tune.
A last comment, my first thought was that the recording suffered because I (mistakenly) felt that the source of her voice in the recording was too removed from the microphone. I was wrong again. In fact the balance of her clear, soprano voice to the orchestra is perfect.

3 out of 5 stars de los Angeles: Song of the Auvergne.......2001-11-08

De los Angeles's singing can be wonderful, as in her "On the Wings of Song." I find her voice too heavy for this music. I much prefer the version of the late Netania Davrath. Madline Grey's is also better.

Mexican tenor Ramón Vargas is in the midst of a fine international career, where he is in demand for and concentrates on the purely lyric tenor repertoire. His smallish, well-focused voice is attractive and distinguished, his top notes free and easy, and his ability in coloratura admirable, making him particularly valuable in the operas of Rossini. He is also an intelligent musician and has a natural feel for a melodic line. On this CD, he tackles the occasional aria that is a bit too heavy for him, i.e., Rodolfo's aria from La Bohème, an excerpt from Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, and Lensky's aria from Eugen Onegin, but on disc, at least, he finds no need to force, and the results are good. In general, he's ardent without being overly sentimental, and except for a vaguely desperate sounding high D flat(!) (as at the end of the fine scene from Donizetti's Roberto Devereux), he keeps the tone lovely. And his selection of arias here contains enough rarities among the chestnuts to make this CD particularly valuable. If you haven't heard Vargas, you should. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars True Mexican colour.......2007-04-17

Needless for me to remind, some top tenors around today come from Mexico.
Placido Domingo started off as a baritone. Vargas on the other hand is an out-and-out tenor. Yes, his voice is most beautiful in its upper register. Don't for once let those young or supposedly good looking tenors steal ALL the show. Vocally, guys like Vargas and Alvarez top the current tenor line up.
Why ask Pavarotti the question about his successor?
We know the answer ourselves - Ramon Vargas.
The new big 3 tenors? Vargas succeeding Pav, Alvarez succeeding Carerras, Heppner succeeding Domingo.
    Ad finido.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE LYRIC TENOR VOICE.......2003-11-02

Mr.Vargas has a true lyric tenor voice and, in pointed disagreement with Mr. Levine's otherwise excellent review, I point out that both Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera and Rodolfo in La Boheme are lyric tenor roles that were sung by such lyric tenors as Bonci and McCormack (Rodolfo). Another very important point is that we have, as opera lovers, developed a very disagreeable habit of proclaiming, through lack of historical perspective, every tenor "the greatest tenor of all-time" forgetting minor voices from the past like Lauri-Volpi, Caruso, Tucker, Gigli, etc.
With these points developed I can point out that the singing on this CD is on an exceptionally high order. Try the arias from Romeo, Lucia di Lammermoor, and La Favorita to see what I'm talking about. The top notes have, at times, almost a Bjoring like sheen and freedom (I should point out to the power nuts that Bjoring's voice was NOT LARGE)while his approach recalls the the great american tenor Jan Peerce. Bravo Vargas!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ramón Vargas - For Tenor Connoisseurs!!.......2003-03-23

I've been looking for a great tenor voice for some time now. Most new tenors, with a few exceptions, sound more like high singing baritones with little high frequency overtones to their voice. Pavarotti is by far the greatest tenor of our time with a beautiful upper register with high frequency overtones. But Pavarotti's overtones are not as attractive or present in his middle and lower registers. Ramon's a fairly new tenor (42 years old) that finally sounds like a tenor, because he has gorgous high frequency overtones. What makes Ramon so unique is that his overtones are consistant and beautiful throughout his entire range. If I had to discribe his voice in one word it would be "Intoxicating". His singing sounds effortless, romantic and very sensitive which touches the heart. The only thing he needs to work on is instilling more drama into the dramatic lines. With this one CD I have fallen in love with Ramon's voice. I can't wait until he is ready to do more Puccini. This CD is a MUST HAVE!

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and musical tenor.......2001-05-29

I loved his Italian song recital (Canzoni), which led me to purchase this CD. The 'Canzoni' performance demonstrated a rich, beautifully controlled voice, producing the most lovely pianissimi since diStefano in his prime; definitely a voice to cherish. While this performance shows much the same, the voice seems thinner and effortful in production during the more dramatic moments. Of course, this is probably due to the fact that his lyric voice has to push a bit to be heard over an orchestra playing full force. However, his approach to this music is dead-on, and in many cases revelatory. I look forward to many more offerings from this very talented singer.

    4 out of 5 stars A Tenor of Note.......2000-06-28

It is no secret among true opera devotees that Ramon Vargas has one of more beautiful tenor voices of today. His slightly dark hued, warm lyric tenor is an instrument of rare quality. Fortunately, Vargas is able to combine this beauty of sound with intelligent phrasing and restraint. Although it was been remarked that his voice is rather small, this is a misconception. I have had the pleasure of hearing Vargas all three times he has performed at the LA Opera, once in Werther and twice in L'elisir D'amore. Although Vargas does not have the spinto power of a Domingo, he achieves plently of volume without straining his voice. Although Vargas struggles sometimes at the top, that is not because he lacks an adequate top register. Rather, it is because his voice is not particularly well suited to the heavier, higher tessitura roles. Thus, Vargas reaches the top notes demanded by Donizetti, for example, with facility, while he may sometimes struggle with a heavier Verdi aria. One can only hope that Vargas does not push his voice unwisely like a Di Stefano, whose expansion into the heavier repertoire resulted in the coarsening of that great tenor's velvety timbre. This is not to say that Vargas's voice will not change. But any change should come naturally. In the meantime, Vargas should do what he has been doing thus far, something that he seems to do better than any other tenor today.

2 out of 5 stars The Sound But Not The Soul.......2001-06-04

I am a hard-core tango fan but have to say I find very little to like about this CD. I bought it on the strength of the line-up of musicians in El Quinteto Buenos Aires who are joined by the Royal Philatelic Orchestra conducted but the illustrious Ettore Stratta. With accomplished tango artists like Antonio Agri, Leopoldo Federico, Pablo Ziegler, Osvaldo Berlingieri and Hector Console at the nucleus, how could I go wrong? After all, Ziegler's Tango Romance with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra was a winner! Sadly, this isn't. The tango presented here is of the type one would expect to hear in an elevator. There is almost no passion and play is lackluster on nearly all cuts. The one exception is a fine rendition of the Ziegler composition Milonga En El Viento. They destroyed Cafetin de Buenos Aires! While this CD would be fine as background music in a corporate office, I can't see myself listening very often. Symphonic Tango may have the sound of tango, but it lacks the soul of tango.

    5 out of 5 stars Sweet & Warm..........1999-03-13

I love all the "Symphonic" series by Mr. Stratta who is ingenious in arranging music. I heard his music by some chance at a CD shop for the first time. The melody was so sweet and I asked a shopboy what the song was. The CD was "Symphonic Bolero" with nice cover art. Since then I've been a big fan of him. This CD is also one of my favorite. This always lets me be in a warm and happy mood. I'd like to recommend you to try his other albums. Good buy!

    5 out of 5 stars This is stunning--dance-able, listen-able tango music........1998-09-29

There is a nice mix of old and new "standards." The accompanying booklet has a brief, but authoritative history of the tango and the composers and performers on the cd. It really makes you want to dance but listening is OK too. Energizing and inspirational in its lushness.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-17

Joseph Canteloube (1879-1957) first began collecting and harmonizing the folksongs of the Auvergne in 1908, and in 1923 the first of the 'Chants d'Auvergne' was composed. For some years these songs were firmly established as a landmark in the French repertoire of songs for voice and orchestra, skillfully done, and an excellent vehicle for displaying the soprano voice.
Canteloube was educated at the conservatory 'Schola Cantorum', and studied there in 1902 with Vincent d'Indy in Paris. D'Indy's most important contribution to Canteloube's education was the rigorous technical training he provided, particularly emphasizing harmony and form.
D'Indy thus revealed to him "the power and purity of musical and poetic sources that spontaneously emanate from the earth; dances and popular songs, legends and rustic dances". All this can be ascertained in Cantelouble's 'chants of the Auvergne'.
There are two that I will mention (because they are my favorites) from this group on the disc and are completely different from each other. "Lou Bossu" which is the rather cruel story of a hunchback who is attracted to a lovely young girl and approaches her for some kind of contact; she, in turn, teases him by faining interest until she finally totally rejects his advances. The phrases are in simple metrical style with the singer portraying both characters. Dawn Upshaw does this exceptionally well, and the orchestral accompaniment supports her and the text. Just a really interesting rendition.
The "Brezairola" (Berceuse) begins luxuriantly with its high violin solo duetting with various wind instruments behind, rather than in between, the song. This melody is one of the most beautiful tunes that I personally have ever encountered, and Upshaw does it justice.
This is a disc worth hearing if you like the classical folk tune experience, and it's all first-rate.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Listening.......2006-04-24

'Songs of the Auvergne' by Soprano Dawn Upshaw and the Orchestre de L'Opera de Lyon, directed by Kent Nagano seems to be exactly toe sort of material for which Upshaw is best suited. Whenever I compare her singing of popular show songs or heavier operatic works to masters in these fields, she seems to come up a bit short. Here, however, she makes these songs come alive as well as anyone I can think of.

While I can't resist the thought that somehow, these songs are about eggplant (aubergines), I seem to find even greater pleasure in the material than if it had a less interesting name.

    Very, very good listening.

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully refreshing and a very good value.......2006-02-25

If my memory serves well, before receiving this set I had never heard the whole of Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne. Certainly I don't have sufficient familiarity with the work or the available recordings of it to offer any comparative comments one could rely on. Before buying this particular recording I spent some time listening to the clips of various recordings offered by Amazon. I liked the Upshaw-Nagano version best and have not been disappointed by the full recording. Without being at all superficial, this performance is delightfully refreshing. The set of two disks is very good value for the money.

Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.

    4 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20

I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.

4 out of 5 stars some great stuff here.......2006-07-03

Willie Bobo is the guy who popularized the "boogaloo" sound. These two CD's showcases this style from the mid 60's. It's a combination of pop, latin and jazz all rolled into one. A couple of the cuts are classics (Spanish Grease, and Fried Neck Bones). Spanish Grease is the inspiration for No-one To Depend On by Santana, almost note for note. BTW, the picture on the cover of a bodega in Spanish Harlem is a classic as well, really takes you back to a time and a place.

    5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Icon of 60's Pop Culture.......2003-03-22

In the 60's, Willie Bobo created a bridge between Popular and Latin music using an ensemble of instruments that included electric bass and guitar and no keyboards. He used Popular songs and transformed them with Latin rhythms to create a truly unique sound. This allowed for an entire industry of songs to be created by many great artists and composers. Using Willie as an inspiration, Santana created many of his signature styles from these early recordings. If you listen to the music used in the first Austin Powers movie, you will hear Willie's style being used to signify the 60's culture. This man was never given credit for his contribution to the American Pop Culture of the 60's and beyond.

4 out of 5 stars William Correa (aka Willie Bobo) Classics.......2001-04-06

Can something recorded nearly fifty years ago sound fresh today? The answer is yes.....and no. The classic cuts from these two reissues are magnificent examples of where the merging of r&b, jazz and latin music were heading, unfortunately pop got in the way. The standout tracks make this CD worth the price, you can always skip over the songs that attempted to win over the pop audiences of the time. Of the two CD's here on one disc probably "Spanish Grease" is the better of the two. The best tracks are those con sabor(tasty) like the classic "Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries" easily the best song with its refrain played over jazzy chops and incessant timbales,"Spanish Grease" the original Willie Bobo penned song with its quajira refrain and soulful interplay of English and Spanish, "Hurt So Bad" is one of the few times the recreation of a pop standard works on the CD, it's much better than Little Anthony and The Imperials hit verson of the times, well that and "It's not Unusual" where Bobo takes a rare lead vocal complete with thick accent English or is that Spanish? It is a fun CD, full of latin jazz as it was and even where it shouldn't have been. A bit of nostalgia, an original blend of cultures on wax that sounds as fresh today as yesterday, if you're old enough to remember of course. A bargain for latin jazz affionados, a classic timbale band leader brought back to life on CD for a listen to a sound that influenced the future of hybrid latin jazz and roc. The accompanying booklet adds to the historical significance of these recordings, complete with original liner notes from the original albums.

He unzips the sunroof, fold's down his Beat Takeshi Raybans (as featured in the Japanese Ganster flick "Hana Bi") jumps in 3rd gear to 100kmh and slowly screams "Fried Neck Bones and Some Fries". Again and again.

The security guard looks at me, my ID pass, and waves me into the car park. I meekly make Willie go quiet. Beat would have let it blare and stared inscrutably.
