Of all of Olga's albums, this may quite possibly be my personal favorite. It does not contain the tropical merengue that brought her fame and glory in the past, but it is still a smashing CD. Happy, energetic, and refreshing, Olga has released an album that cannot be forgotten. If you want a set of songs that will liven your spirits and keep you dancing for hours, this is the one for you. Que linda!

This Cd is too poppy. When I buy a cd from Olga Ta?on I want Merenegue, not run of the mill pop and 3 versiones of bandolero!

This album is simply sizzling!!! Olga's vocie is as strong and smooth as ever, and although it's not 100% merengue thru and thru, there is plenty of mernegues and tropical styles. A fun album!

What is this a pop album?? Olga la gente te quieren por merenguera. This album is a total disappointment. I was hoping to hear some moving your culo tracks like in Yo Por Ti, Olga I'll be there in the front row when you go back to being a merengue singer and leave all this pop/ballad business behind ya.

Sonora Poncena is one of Puerto Rico's most beloved bands and this album was one of their most prolific works with the classics "Prende El Fogon" and "Tumba La Cana Jibarito" justifying the entire CD's price. While 1974's "Sabor Sureno" was a much stronger album this one is also one of their best albums.

A fantastic album of revolutionary music.......2001-04-10

This is the album that opened my ears to intellectual Spanish-language music, "musica trouba," "canciones nuevas," a genre in which I am still something of a novice and am continuing to explore. The title sums up the content of the album pretty well: these are "The Revolutionary Songs of Latin America." Some are pretty dated, like the one praising Ho Chi Minh, others remain relevent today such as "Hasta Siempre" and "Santiago de Chile." To be honest, the tone of this album is pretty confrontational, often bluntly so, and right-wing people will certainly be offended by the lyrics (if they understand them), but this album seeks to deliver a message beyond mere entertainment, at once revealing the beauty of the art that can be found in Latin America, the sad histories and conditions which people in Latin America have had to endure("Se O Grileiro Vem"), and most importantly the indefatiguable Latin spirit that, beaten down, still strives towards the new tomorrow. Soledad brilliantly interprets some masterful, emotive songwriting from many of the greatest songwriters from Latin America. Silvio Rodriguez performs "Santiago de Chile" with the somber and serious reflection, Soledad Bravo's expansive voice and aggressive arrangements transform it into a song of angry defiance, accompanied by blaring horns and military style drums. Though the much of the album retains this edge, the album appropriately closes with three intraspective songs, "Cancion del Elegido," "Pobre del Cantor," and "La Era Esta Pariendo Un Corazon," which move the listener away from the angst of the revolutionary struggles, and purposefully bring the album to a positive close. Along with "Santiago de Chile," "La Era Esta Pariendo Un Corazon" is my favorite on the album. I have to admit it was not easy for me to write this review even - the passions in the album take hold in me just to write about it without hearing it, and I worry I don't do it justice. I really, really, love these songs though and can't recommend it enough.

Amazing Voice-Great Politcal Folk.......2000-04-21

Venezualian Soledad Bravo uses her amazing voice to express political views in 21 songs, composed by such great artists as Violetta Parra, Daniel Viglietti, Rolando Alarcon, Silvio Rodriguez, and Atahualpa Yupanqui. Some of these songs have been recorded by other artists like Angel Parra, but the different versions serve as foils to each other, each different, each great. Perhaps singing about Che or Miguel Rodriguez is not timely today, but the messages are still thought provoking. These people lived and died for what they believed, not like the poor singer(s) referred to in Pobre del Cantor, and regardless of personal political views, their sacrifice must be admired. WONDERFUL CD, I recommend it for any fans of Canciones Nuevas and the popular folk movement of the 1960s and 70s.

This one really swings.......2007-07-17

I love this album. No filler material, it swings from the beginning to the end. The cuts are mostly guanguancos. The sound quality is good considering a recording of 1965. You can also check the subsequent Tommy Olivencia albums which are very good as well (Jala Jala y Guaguanco, Fire-Fire, A Toda Maquina).

A good debut album but suffers from terrible sound quality........2003-07-18

This was Tommy Olivencia's first album and featured the lead vocals of Chamaco Ramirez and Paquito Guzman. While the music itself is very good, the sound quality is just terrible. This CD was poorly remastered from an LP (clicks, pops and vinyl surface noise are ever-present).
