Villancicos y Danzas Criollas is a homage to the cultural traditions of Iberia and Ibero-America, showing the influence of European traditions in the Americas. The Villancico (also called Chanzoneta) is a form of poetry that was adopted for use in secular songs and, in the 17th century, for Christmas carols (the modern usage of the word denotes a carol). The secular songs were gradually replaced by the Romance while the Christmas carol form became more popular. The typical lyrics of villancicos have two or three stanzas followed by a refrain. The most religious-oriented villancico of this collection is Hanacpachap Cussicuinin (from Lima) where the author asks for their prayer to be answered.

The transmission of musical culture is a favorite (and fascinating) subject for Jordi Savall and this CD includes some beautiful and rousing music. The CD begins with four selections reflecting Iberian music that sets the stage of presenting a song (usually) followed by a dance. Following this introduction we are off the Americas and music from Peru, Guatemala and Mexico.

As pointed out in the booklet, the colonial expansion that took place during the 15th and 16th centuries widen cultural connections to include Africa, Asia and the Americas, which is reflected in this collection of music. One will discover a mixing of African dance rhythms and percussion with European polyphony. This is nicely demonstrated by the first selection with its strong use of drums and bold brass playing combined with a fast-paced dance melody and mixed voices. The second work, by an anonymous composer, is quite a contrast with its more restrained and courtly rhythms played by string instruments without the percussion or brass. The Hanacpachap Cussicuinin is scored for percussion, brass and voices sounding like a solemn funeral procession and is followed by a beautifully played piece for harp and percussion from Mexico. The incomparable Montserrat Figueras sings with peerless passion and beauty, particularly in the short Tono Hidalgo of Juan Hidalgo. One could go on and on extolling the wonderful music of this CD, suffice it to say that among my collection of early music discs this one is at the top.

As with all of Jordi Savall's recordings the performance is excellent and beautifully balanced with voices and instruments receiving equal emphasis. If you do not have this disc and love early music get it without hesitation.

4 out of 5 stars Mucho me pesa la cabeza.......2007-07-02

Again and again we hear "Mucho me pesa la cabeza"..... "Much it pains my head."

This music is so ephemeral... so unique.... so mind massaging..... I love reading while it softly plays in the background in the room!

The massage is quite expansive!

Not a painful massage at all, but it does get inside your head!

5 out of 5 stars Just Get it!.......2006-08-20

It's hard to pick out anything special on this disk... everything is top-notch. The opening 'La Chacona' is a delight and it just gets better and better and better. The second piece definitely is having some fun setting the listener up for 'something.' The ritual piece is majestic while the tone changes again with the harp solo... Hesprion XX/XXI are treasures in the ocean of music.
Gracias, Senores!

This recording is so great and so
breath taking that leaves me with
only this to say: since the day it
arrived to my doorstep back in mid
December, I have listen to it daily,
not just few tracks, but the whole
CD several times a day.....One
of the best works of Savall and
Hesperion XXI.....

5 out of 5 stars ýCreoleý Songs and Dances from Old Spain to the New World.......2004-05-16

An astonishing collection of vocal polyphony and dance music, largely from Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico. Performed with flair and feeling by the preeminent Spanish early-music ensemble of our time. Not to be missed!

My translation of the album title, given above, is not exact. "Criolla" can refer to anything Latin American, and a "villancico" is first and foremost a Spanish poetic genre from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Norton/Grove Concise Encyclopedia tells us that it was "originally derived from a medieval dance lyric and associated with rustic or popular themes." Certainly the rustic and popular loom large in this lively selection of Renaissance music. Hesperion XXI and its director Jordi Savall have often sampled folk styles in their imaginative reconstitutions of early performance tradition. So most of these selections get percussion accompaniment accentuating the dance element, while strumming guitars, castanets, maracas, and more are employed discreetly but effectively. Lusty and characterful vocal contributions come courtesy of La Capella Reial de Catalunya and soprano Montserrat Figueras, who takes a couple of fine solo turns. It's all recorded in a warm, resonant church acoustic.

In his liner notes, Prof. Rui Vieira Neri introduces the Spanish part of this collection by noting a long tradition of mixing high and low culture, not to mention Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultural elements in the art and music of the Iberian peninsula. And right away we get to hear a vocal chaconne (a dance imported from the Indies "by mail" according to Lope de Vega) and a Moresca "Di Perra Mora," with strong Arabic flavor and hints of 5/2 meter.

Of the New World selections, some of the most engaging combine indigenous languages with Netherlands musical style. The solemn processional hymn "Hancpachap cussicuinin," written by a native composer in the Quechua language of Peru, was also the first example of polyphony printed in the Americas. Gaspar Fernandes (1570-1629), chapel master at the Puebla cathedral, wrote a number of villancicos that mix Castilian with Nahuatl, the Aztec tongue, including "Tleycantimo choquiliua" on this recording. It is based on a local Indian dance, as is another Christmas villancico included here, "Ay que me abraso," which moves to the beat of the Mexican guaracha.

Bantu and Yoruba phrases crop up frequently in the refrains of the African-influenced numbers, so numerous in their day that they were customarily referred to in the old manuscripts as Negro, Negrilla, or Guineo. Savall includes three such pieces on this recording; they abound in the sort of rhythmic intricacies and call-and-response effects that Europeans already associated with Africa. Among the most infectious is "Antonya, Flasiquiya, Gasipá," in which the song's characters wake up after a long night of drinking and dancing in order to go to Bethlehem to pay homage to baby Jesus, where more carousing will be called for. Each refrain ends with the words "Mucho me pesa la cabeza": "Oh, my aching head."

I wouldn't want to give the impression that this music will appeal mostly to scholars. In fact, it is simply full of human joy, tenderness, and fun, qualities that leap across the centuries at us and need no special pleading, thanks to the terrific performances on this CD. You will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29

During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.

The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.

If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Profile of a King's Life? Sure. Why not?.......2006-11-21

That is essentially the 'theme' of the CD. Thus it is not all 'Spanish' music per se but a collection including some old chestnuts from other lands. All that said, it is a superb collection and even the old chestnuts have new life breathed into them given the masterful treatment dished out here. The theme of 'Mille Regretz' appears over and over and we learn, read the notes!, that is is connected personally with Carlos V. Almost a personal theme from a 16th C. soundtrack as it were. A delightful recording.

5 out of 5 stars The life of an emperor in music.......2006-07-23

This is a wonderful pot-pourri of European music from the first half of the sixteenth century - reflecting the pan-European origins of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain. One of the chief delights of the disc is the consort singing of the male voices of La Capella Real. Savall now uses male altos in the vocal pieces by Enzina (and others) in the upper registers, rather than female sopranos (principally that of his wife, Montserrat Figueras) as he did in his 90's recordings with Astree. The results are perfect; altos Carlos Mena and Pascal Bertain make an abiding impression here, with Capella regular Danile Carnovich holding up the bass clef. Figueras takes the cantus in the monophonic 'ballad' pieces, and is still matchless in this kind of music. The winds of La Capella are a joy to hear - listen to the Susato Battaglia, and the Anonymous La Spagna.
In short, this is an echanting survey of the secular and religious music of 16th century Europe, imaginatively presented and beautifuly performed and recorded. A must - and a fine companion to Savall's life of Isablle I of Spain, also from Alia Vox.

5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong.......2005-08-04

Hesperion XXIs recordings for ALIA VOX are generally even better than the ones they made for EMI, and this one is no exception. Great artistic care has been taken with the arrangements to make this music really accessible to a wide audience. Add to this a first rate realistic recording and you get a divinely beautiful and evocative sound.

The performances are of course faultless. The ensemble playing is extremely precise, the singing is strong and engaging and the individual instrumentalists are all able to creatively express themselves within the mix. Andrew Lawrence King on harp is captivating as always, and Jordi Savall's rich and creamy viol, well, simply the best.

A luxurious and mesmerising production.

5 out of 5 stars ¡Vive el musica de Carlos V!.......2003-02-07

I purchased this CD without any information whatsoever after returning from a trip to Spain. I am generally a fan of "early music" (which is basically, according to CD store categorizations, almost everything written before 1600), so I'm used to buying CDs that I know nothing about. Sometimes I'm disappointed, but "Carlos V" is one of the most serendipitous purchases I have ever made. The first track is a haunting, beautiful and forlorn song about life's travails. The string arrangement almost sounds modern and the singing is astounding. It's a song that will stay with you, and you'll want to put it on again and again. The CD also has some festive party music on it that's more upbeat, but the CD and La Capella Reial de Catalunya shine brightest on the slow vocal songs. It's a difficult CD to describe, but if you're at all a fan of classical, early or renaissance music, you're likely to love this CD. My only regret is that I didn't look to see if La Capella Reial de Catalunya was playing anywhere when I was in Spain (Catalonia, to be precise). Maybe next time.

Lastly, there is a follow-up to this CD: "Alfons V El Magnamin" - it's a double CD and pricey, but well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Renaissance.......2002-12-19

This is an excelent demonstration of how beautiful and modern is the music of Renaissance. I think it will be a nice surprise for undevoted. I advise this CD for everyone, it's really superb!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hesperion XX and others.......2007-03-28

This is a truly inspirational disc that features several different artists. I came across this disc years ago because of my interest in time period music performed by Jordi Savall and the lovely voice of Monteserrat Figueras in the group Hesperion XX. Both are featured on this disc extensively. Listening to this music is almost like a religious experience, it elevates your senses beyond the mundane for a richly rewarding experience; it is an auditory time warp. Essentially this is a compilation of time period music with compositions mostly from the 1500's. Besides the fabulous work by Hesperion XX the disc also includes some interesting work by Hopkinson Smith on Vihuela while Figueras sings in her lovely soprano voice. There are also some nice orchestra pieces most notably by Issac Ibeniz on "Iberia, El Puerto" which is a lush theme that would sit well in a movie about Spain's Golden Age, Manuel de Falla's beautiful compostion of "El Sombrero De Tres Picos" as performed by Joven Orchestra Nacional de Espana and Roberto Gerhard's "Don Quijote Albada Danza" as performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica de Tenerife. Also of note is the work of Francisco Guerau and the magical baroque guitar of Hopkinson Smith as performed on "Treze diferencias de Canario." Listening to this music reminds one of the grandeur of Spains's past in the Age of Discovery. This is classical album for people like me, who really don't know that much about classical music but realizes good music when he hears it. Recommended for people who like to listen to time period music and the interpretations of Hesperion XX.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best classical music.......2001-02-05

I did'nt really like classical music till i bought España - Anthology of Spanish Music CD. I really, really love this CD. If your an artist and sometimes lack inspiration, I recommend this CD! It will get you in the mood to paint!

4 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2000-11-04

Two complaints: no liner notes so any potential educational value is lost (I have a number of reference books around the house and some of these composers don't show up anywhere in them) and there is at least one extremely jarring organ work that blasts out of nowhere. A more listener friendly compilation would've sequenced the disc differently or left it out alltogether. That said, this is a wonderful collection of music that I have (mostly) never heard before. I'm glad Naive Astree saw fit to put a lot of obscure and out-of-print recordings together to form this audio introduction to an underappreciated canon.

Highlights include:

Track 8 - Jordi Savall (gamba), Ton Koopman (harpsichord), and Rolf Lislevand (lute) turn in a brief but jaunty chamber performance of Ortiz. Left me wanting more.

Track 11 - Hesperion XX give a haunting vocal performance of Morales' Pie Jesu Domine. I'm not one to ususally appreciate this sort of music (so consider me uninformed) but I found this truly beautiful.

Track 15 - features Hopkinson Smith on the baroque guitar performing a fascinating Guerau work. Descending arpeggios like gentle, trickling waterfalls. Smith is a stunning performer. I wish he was better known in the U.S.

Track 22 - from Haydn's original orchestral version of "The Seven Last Words Of Christ On The Cross," this is the one tempestuous movement from a work of mostly subdued music. Deep, powerful string sound from Savall's Le Concert Des Nations. Very well recorded.

While I'd like to know more about the works and the composers behind them there is so much here to be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level that I can't whine too much. If you have any interest, by all means pick up this bargain. You will be introduced to a number of great performers and works.

Other recent King's Singers' recordings on this label have reaffirmed the ensemble's credentials as compelling advocates of contemporary music. Here, only the most hardhearted of early music purists could fail to find the infectious cocktail of popular and religious Spanish music--largely 16th century--going to their heads, even if the King's Singers add the occasional theatrical embellishment. The music (much of it by "Anon") is organized into five categories, among them "fire" and "water" (with the alternative implications of ardor and alcohol). Of the named composers, none takes the ear more readily than Mateo Flecha the Elder. His La Bomba, one of several lengthy ensaladas (miniature music dramas), steals the show, with its comic tale of a bunch of sailors' impassioned but shallow prayer for deliverance from shipwreck. Elsewhere the moods range from pious to bitter-sweet melancholy--and just try to keep your feet still in villancicos such as Rodrigo Martinez. Those familiar, warm Harp Consort textures contribute markedly to the overall richness of sound. --Andrew Green

This is an extremely fun vocal Cd with really great arrangements. I thoroughly enjoy it and bought copies for all of my family too.

5 out of 5 stars The King's Singers work their magic again.......2006-01-28

Having been a fan of the King's Singers since my teenage years, which are growing ever more faint in my memory, I am sometimes surprised that they still surprise me. And yet, they always do. There is something quite magical about their voices - not just their individual voices, which are all wonderful, but what happens when you put them all together - the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts. They have hit upon a great formula, which will hopefully be around for many more wonderful recordings.

The other thing I love about the KS is how well they do different styles of music. Their technique on this is superb - the pronounciation, the intonation, all of it is right on the money. Yet they also manage to "take off the viking hat" (as my choral director likes to say when we're switching styles) and do the Beatles without butchering them. It's really quite something to behold.

This CD is a great introduction to the classical side of the KS, and a definite must-have for any current fan. The pieces are beautiful and exciting, they all complement each other wonderfully, and the whole thing is just a joy to hear!

      5 out of 5 stars PERFECT INTERPRETATION.......2005-03-06

I am a fun of Spanish Renaissance Music and I found this recording extremely good! King's Singers shows their abilities once again!

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2001-01-05

I am a huge fan of Renaissance music, and I have to say, this recording is truly outstanding! The blend, dynamics, style and tone really need to be heard to be appreciated. The addition of the Harp Consort to this already superlative group also gets a big "thumbs up" from me. And Stephen Connolly! Oh, be still my foolish heart!! What a voice! The most resonant I can remember hearing! The selections by Mateo Flecha will make you laugh out loud, but my personal favorite - at least, for the moment - is "Aleph, quomodo sedet sola civitas" by Padilla. The extremely musical performance and the chill-producing display of dynamics makes this piece sound like it is performed by a choir of many more than six! I highly recommend this CD to all who appreciate quality music.

      5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-04-07

This disc is the king'singers' second release with the current lineup (Hurley, Short, Phoenix, Lawson, Crouch, and Connolly) and is in my opinion the better of the two. Paul Phoenix, k's tenor, has told me that he much prefers the blend and sound on this disc to that of Street Songs. The singing is superb, and is ably supplemented with the playing of the Harp Consort. This disc is also great fun to listen to! You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of textures heard here. The disc starts out with a solo track by 2nd baritone Gabriel Crouch, and also includes small-group tracks as well as full-roster pieces. Anyone who has caught their April 2000 tour has likely heard "La bomba" by Mateo Flecha, recorded on here. It is obvious that the k's had great fun making this recording! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars THE introduction to secular renaissance music.......2005-03-09

There is not a global survey of secular music in Renaissance: every trend and national nuance is here. This CD compete for "The most varied musical program in history" prize!!!. King's singers produces a nice sound. Surely I like more the hilliard ensemble sonic landscape: they are more "hooty" and proyect more clearly the sound (with less vibrato) but never produced a more varied set like King's singers. If you have space for only 1 Renaissance CD, it MUST be this. You must purchase this cd: it is a reward for such an intelligent programme!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A fun introduction to European madrigal styles!.......2002-11-28

Joined on about a third of the numbers by instrumentalists billed as the "Consort of Musicke", the King's Singers offer a variety of compositions from each country they "visit", some upbeat and others gently reflective. The vocalists are countertenors Jeremy Jackman and Alastair Hume, tenor Bill Ives, baritones Anthony Holt and Simon Carrington, and bass Colin Mason. Their presence and theatricality in interpreting the material are delightful, and these men blend together impeccably, with a clear, straight tone and flawless enunciation. You can actually understanding the words without reading along in the insert booklet (provided, of course, that you're familiar with the language being sung!) Favorites of mine from the thirty four tracks include the Italian "Lirum bililirum" and "Il bianco e dolce cigni"; the English "Of all the birds that I do know" and "Now is the month of Maying"; "La, la, la, je ne l'ose dire" and "Il est bel et bon" from France, "Tres morillas m'enamoran" from Spain; and the German "Tanzen und Springen". In addition to this release, this fine group has an extensive discography. Check out their other recordings too!

        5 out of 5 stars A great recording.......2002-07-25

All male voice with perfect technique. Some madrigals are sung a capella, though most of them with accompaniment. The accompaniment, on renaissance instruments, is perfect, just like the singing. Excellent renditions of Mateo Flecha's La Bomba and Gastoldi's Amor vittorioso. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific European Madrigal Sampling.......2002-03-23

Most madrigals one hears tend to be either in Italian or English. Not so on this album, perhaps one of the best European madrigal samplers (if not the only one)in existence. Some well known English and Italian madrigals can be found, of course. But the true treasure of this album is its inclusion of French, German -- and most rarely, Spanish -- madrigal offerings. Combine this repertoire, then, with the accurate sonorities of the King's Singers and one finds treasure unbounded. An album that is infinitely enjoyable. Liner notes and translations are included.

        5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of Madrigals.......2001-09-02

I am a university student and a vocal performance major, and this album represents exactly what madrigal singing was at the time. It also contains a diverse array of languages from Italian to Englis to Spainish. Having worked with Simon Carrington personally i know that the styles of the madrigals on this album are accurate. Also, its just really fun to listen too! As an even bigger plus, its cheap for poor students! I highly recommend buying this.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting Renaissance music.......2006-07-03

I saw a performance by the Globe Theatre that included a wonderful 5-piece English Renaissance musical ensemble. I went looking for some music like that --- music that included viols, lute, wind, reed, and percussion instruments. The particular sound wasn't easy to find, despite a plethora of English Renaissance CDs. This album of Spanish music from the 15th and 16th centuries actually came closer to the sound I was looking for. It alternates between haunting minor key melodies --- pavanes and the like --- and faster, livlier dance tunes. They're a wind ensemble, but there's actually a tune for solo lute. A lot of variety in a memorable and reasonably priced CD. I highly recommend it. (Although I hope Piffaro will consider recording a CD of English Renaissance music!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, as usual........2005-11-16

'Los Ministriles, Spanish Renaissance Wind Music' is, I believe, the Philadelphia band, Piffaro's second or third album and I really find it more enjoyable than their parallel album on Italian Rennaissance music. The instruments are virtually identical, with a fair mix of stringed instruments added to round out the sound, but I really enjoyed the overall listening experience more. So, if you are unfamiliar with this band, get this album before the Italian or French albums.

This is an interesting contrast to the works of Begona Olavide and the Eduardo Paniagua Group' of which Olavide is a member. This Spanish group specializes in Medieval and Renaissance stringed instruments. And, from a purely subjective reaction, I prefer their work to Piffaro. I also think their scholarship is more interesting, but then, they are all Spanish, and Spanish specialists, so that is to be expected.

The visceral preference may be the only one worth banking on.

Worth the money, Olavide and Paniagua may be greater value.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous!.......2005-03-21

A magnificent recording with enthralling melodies that will lift up your spirits. The bagpipes and flute pieces are simply wonderful. In quality, variety and every other aspect, Los Ministriles is certainly comparable to "Sinners and Saints", the great amazon.com Renaissance dance music favorite, the only difference being that this CD only contains instrumental music (no songs).

It is just too bad very few people are aware of it.
