A bridge between bossa nova and 1960s pop, Sergio Mendes' music was easy listening, vaguely psychedelic pop, light jazz, and bossa nova all rolled into one. Mendes and Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a number of hits from the mid-'60s to the early-1970s that are included here. Getting his professional start playing and arranging for Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Mendes typically filled out his proper albums with updated versions of popular songs written by the Brazilian masters as well as some of his own tunes his tunes "Look Around" and "So Many Stars" are included. But this collection really surveys his interpretations of pop tunes of the day, some of which were never hits for Mendes. The small combo's light touch and rich vocal harmonies make for pleasant if kitschy covers of hits like the Beatles' "Fool On The Hill" and "Day Tripper," Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love," and others. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Love This Group!.......2007-06-22

Learned about this group while in college in the 60s and saw them perform in person. While their songs have a Latin and/or sultry beat, their renditions of songs in this CD are varied and wonderful. Songs from the Beatles, Cole Porter (fabulous rendition of "Night and Day")and composers Alan and Marilyn Bergman have very unique interpretations.

5 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2007-06-17

The sound of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 is just as fresh and clean as it was fourty (ohmygod!) years ago. Perfect for quiet evenings at home setting a classy mood at your next party.

4 out of 5 stars never gets old.......2007-05-14

I love this sound as much as I did originally. Some things that are solidly good stay that way. This album is one such.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderul.......2007-05-11

I love Brasil 66 songs so much, I almost can't review this collection. I think of riding in our car in summer when I was 9 years old, my elbow on the window, the warm breeze swirling around my mom and me. I think of hot summer days and warm evenings, everything in time moving slowly and easily. Possibly my favorite song of all time is Pretty World... lyrics, music, and style perfectly blend into a happy bubble of being young and in love and care free. "We'll hang a little sign that just says 'Paradise - Population Two'." And those voices, those glorious sultry voices. (Combine with Bossa Nova by Putumayo.)

3 out of 5 stars Great Album>>> Love it.......2007-02-21

This one bring me back to those days where my parents, aunts and uncles were playing it on LP. Great thing about it is I inherted their taste for great music. Althou the recording isnt as great sum of the remastered album, it still way better than playing LP.

5 out of 5 stars Muy buena "Desculpe o aue".......2005-08-21

No conozco mucho de esta cantante pero escuché ahí por principios de los 90 la canción "Desculpe o aue" y me gustó muchísimo, y ahora sé quién la canta.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Mutantes' ex lead singer.......2003-07-24

This is the collection of the top 10 singles (in the Brazilian chart) of Mutantes' lead singer Rita Lee. Mutantes was one of South America's most created and revered psychedelic rock bands from the late 60's and early 70's. In the 80's, Rita abandoned the experimentation and psychedelism that characterized the Mutantes sound and tried some lighter stuff with influences of bossa nova (check Doce Vampiro, Ovelha Negra, Desculpe O Auê). This CD is the best that the 80's pop rock could offer. There are some pure rock tracks that are awsome too (Agora Só Falta Você, Jardins da Babilônia). The first one was dedicated to her Mutantes partner and ex-boyfriend Arnaldo Baptista and talks about leaving the past behind. Overall, this is a must have for Rita's fans and a very pleasant surprise for a casual listener.

5 out of 5 stars Rita and Roberto Rule!.......2003-06-08

It was on an Internet Radio service to which I (a lover of Brazilian samba/bossa nova) subscribe that I first heard Rita singing "Nem Luxo, Nem Lixo." Though utterly clueless as to the work of this artist, I recall from almost the first note being literally elevated by what I was hearing. It took me back to the R&B harmonies that I so vividly recall from my 1950's youth. On the strength of that hearing, I bought this CD, thinking it would be worth it just for that single cut. With apologies to the late Fred Rogers, "can you spell underestimation?" With her husband and musical partner Roberto de Carvalho, Rita is the consummate pop song writer. Together, they toss off melodic and lyrical (and I don't even understand Portuguese!) hooks that strike me as placing them at least in the neighborhood of a team they obviously and genuinely admire, Lennon & McCartney. In this collection that influence (especially, I think, John Lennon's) is most evident in the first six tracks; but beginning with "Doce Vampiro," every cut is (inho) that of an individual voice, making the sort of music that penetrates the consciousness and simply fills one with the sheer joy of being alive. And in the end, what more is there to any creative art form than that? It's pop music at its absolute most sophisticated, and what amazes me is that it's creators are not more widely known here in the U.S. So, with the proviso that my reaction may well be an individual one, I commend the disc to anyone reading this. If you enjoy it as unabashedly as I have, I will have done my modest bit to make the world (by how many ever inhabitants find it persuasive) a happier place. And isn't that what this living busniess is all about?

5 out of 5 stars RITA IS A FANTASTIC BRAZILIAN SINGER !!!!!.......2001-11-02

The first time I heard anything from Rita Lee was in a party in Mexico City in the early 80's and the song of the year was Lanca Perfume, and it doesn't matter how many times I listen to it, it still sounds as perfect as that first time. I'm so glad to see that this album includes it and honestly, the whole album is great, I love every cut that made her famous as a soloist. If you are into Brazilian Music, do yourself a favor and buy this album, you will love it as well, and if you are not into Brazilian Music, but you like and enjoy good 70's and early 80's Pop/Rock, it'll become a great addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars 70's rock still rolls.......2000-02-08

Not quite as technical as newer stuff, but I love her voice and like the arrangements.

3 out of 5 stars Good MOR Bossa Nova Organ Combo, but..........2007-07-13

This is a good middle-of-the-road Bossa Nova organ combo, but it is not Wanderley's best. The earlier records made for the Brazilian market really cook! 'O Samba E Mais Samba' is an excellent example the sort of wide-awake, high-energy Samba Jazz that made Wanderly something very special! Now that that is off my chest, if you like the smoother, almost perky, style of his Verve recordings then this one is fine.

    3 out of 5 stars Waning Wanderley.......2006-03-25

It should be said at the outset that WW was a "keyboardist," not just an organist. He actually started out playing piano in Sau Paulo and Rio clubs before he moved to the organ. So it's not really a departure for him to play the ARP, the Fender Rhodes electric piano, piano, and B3 organ on this compilation. That said, it should also be known that WW died from alcoholism not long after he cut these tracks, so that they don't sound like the "vintage" WW might reflect a man on his way out, both musically and literally, rather than his being affected by 80s culture.

It's rather odd that in Brasil, most folks have never heard of Wanderley; they remember the wife he left to come to America, Isaura Garcia, but not the man who was "discovered" by Tony Bennett and handed over to Creed Taylor at Verve (1966). Summer Samba put WW on the map here in the USA, but his successive output never reached that level of popularity, and in the 1960s American music business, if you're not popular, you're not going anywhere economically speaking. I've heard stories of WW playing drunken gigs in San Francisco tranny bars, and they might be true considering the sad anonymity that became his life. This collection should be considered the last musical gasp of a once popular star. It's really not all that bad, despite the more restrained keyboard style noted in another review. You can hear the earlier WW in a few tracks. I have nearly all the output of WW, including the stuff he realeased in Brasil (Sao Paulo used record stores), so I kinda had to buy this one. If you had to buy a compilation, get the Verve one with the bacon and coldcuts on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars The best compilation of Walter Wanderley's music.......2003-01-10

Walter Wanderley is one of the greatest Brazilian Hammond Organists and was a pioneer of Bossa Nova that he preferred to call Jazz Samba. This compilation includes his latest versions recorded in the USA with a wonderful set of musicians and a great Hammond B3 sound

4 out of 5 stars THE BRAZILIAN SOUND.......2001-08-15

These are not the original versions Walter Wanderley recorded but the sound is rich and renovated. Wanderley keeps his own style and more modernized. All melodies included are excellent, very interesting, in a romantic style to be enjoyed with a coup of coffee and a delicious cake and ice cream. If you like brazilian sounds, I recommend this album, there are a lot of these instruments, such as the berimbau, introducing a song with the same title. The synthethizer has susbstituted today many musical instruments, but this instrument in particular may become a whole orchestra conducted by one indiviudual. All brazilian music fans must include this album, in their collections. Don't forget to buy it.

    2 out of 5 stars This just isn't Walt..........1999-03-27

If you are a fan of Wanderley's trademark sixties organ-bossa sound, avoid this cd at all costs! Though the liner notes do not indicate the recording date, it is clear from the pictire inside, as well as the nausea-inducing presence of a cheap ARP synthesizer, that this was recorded sometime in the eighties! Not that this would automatically make it awful; it's just awful period. The group DOES hit some nice grooves occasionally, but Walt's unmistakeable organ sound has all but vanished in place of a smoother, more homogonized tone that could just as easily come out of a Casio keboard; in additon, all the percussion sounds exceedingly bright to the point of annoyance. Over all, this collection completely lacks pretty much everything that makes the rest of Walt's work enjoyable. For die-hard completists only.
