Catchy, Stirring Songs With Depth.......2005-07-19

I recently saw this band perform to a packed house in Philadelphia. It was my first experience in seeing them and quite an energy-filled and memorable night! I had read a few snippets here and there for some time, and the style of music intrigued me. Well, I certainly was not disappointed! Milton and the Devils Party craft catchy pop songs and even some surprisingly hard rockers, without ever forgetting the most important thing (to me, anyway): Great lyrics. So, I picked up a copy of their debut(as far as I know) record, "What Is All This Sweet Work Worth?". Many of the songs I saw them perform are on this record and executed masterfully without a lot of studio tricks (being a musician myself, I can sniff these out). My personal favorites are "Not To Talk," a scathing song of a disjointed relationship, and "Have You Been Around?," which just might be the best song I've heard in at least a couple of years. Overall, the interplay of the two guitars is compelling and the bass and drums are about as tight a unit you will hear this side of a major label act. I highly recommend this record from an indie band surely destined for greater things!!!

Haven't heard rock this smart since the Smiths and the Kinks.......2005-06-23

I have seen this band perform around Philadelphia and bought this CD at one of their shows, not on Amazon.com. The disc kicks off strongly with End of the Affair, a rollicking number that is quite catchy right off the bat. I love the Kinks feel to Perfect Breasts, and the Shelley-inspired To Jane really shows the literary roots of this band.

I find Not to Talk to be a great driving song, opening up with a solid hummable riff and crashing cymbals, with a nice build up on drums. The song is propelled forward by the nicely but not overly distorted rhythm guitar.

After reading the bio and album description posted here, I find the description of the band's sound to be quite accurate. If you are a fan of the Smiths, the Kinks, early REM, XTC, Echo and the Bunnymen, and dare I say Blue Oyster Cult, you'll enjoy this record. I certainly did, and it is now in heavy rotation on my ipod.
