Yes.......2003-04-03
This is a marvelous collection. There were a few pieces I wish that it would include, such as the rest of his Piano Concerto No.2, or perhaps The Rock, but the fact that the performances are generally great and the recording quality is near-perfect makes up for that.
I would recommend this to anyone who is just starting to become interested in the works of Sergei Rachmaninov.
A decent introduction to the music of Rachmaninoff.......2001-08-12
Sergi Rachmaninoff was the last of the great Romantic composers, especially since the Romantic period had ended for European artists when he was at his height. Although a composer and a conductor, Rachmaninoff was also a virtuoso pianist, which explains why his best compositions feature the piano, either in solo work or with an orchestra. His "Prelude in C-Sharp Minor," which he wrote when he was 20, made him famous throughout the world. This collection also includes several other preludes, "Vocalise," and the famous 18th Variation (Andnate cantible) from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. My only serious complaint about this collection as an introduction to Rachmaninoff is that it only has one movement from his Second Piano Concerto and I have other CDs that include the entire work, which I thing is a good idea.
Great Collection of "Hits".......2000-06-22
This is actually not a bad collection of Greatest Hits. Usually the problem with collections like these is that they have bad recordings and not very good performances but some of these ones are actually okay, and it features performances by Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax among others. In general these are the works of art you think of when you think of Rachmaninoff and so these pieces are a perfect representation of his style.
One of the best CD I own.......1999-12-30
This is one of the best I own. The music is so great, hard to explain...so moving, especially the first track. It reminds me of Russia a lot. I listen to it everyday while driving to work. I highly recommend it.

Leave it to the poker-faced Lovett to use a biblical joke to underline the thread of tangled relationships that weave between the wisecracks on this, his fourth album. With his elegantly drawled tenor and modulated sense of country, gospel, and R&B inflections, the Texan songwriter extends the larger ensemble settings and contrasting moods achieved with his preceding album, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, again mixing shaggy dog stories ("Church"), atmospheric portraits of places and people ("Baltimore"), and fatalistic love songs ("North Dakota") that underline his acknowledged debt to other Lone Star songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Nanci Griffith. Yet his ease with frank rock elements, and an often urbane outlook, point up a musical kinship with L.A.'s folk-rock wing, notably Jackson Browne. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
Still good songwriting.......2007-06-05
I have to admit that this is not one of my favorite albums, but not because it's not a good album. The songwriting is still excellent, it just happens to be less dynamic and less to my taste musically than _Pontiac_ and some others.
That said, I do like it; "Baltimore" is eerie in the long tradition of a capella [well, almost a capella] balladry and "Family Reserve" is simple but oddly heartbreaking.
He'll sing........2006-11-10
This was Lyle Lovett's fourth album. The title is taken from three consecutive books of the Old Testament. Lyle's famous sense of humor is not much in evidence this time around, as he remains fairly serious for the most part. But the songs are some of the best ones he has written. This is my personal favorite Lyle Lovett album.
One of my favorite albums.......2006-10-21
This is an outstanding album. Lyle is one of the best live performers I've ever seen in concert, and every album he's produced has been good, but this has to be among my favorites.
"North Dakota" is so achingly beautiful that it makes me cry every time I hear it. I've learned I can't listen to it while driving, because I start tearing up and have to pull off the road!
Is it just me...or does "Kavity Killer" = Lyle Lovett stalker???.......2006-02-23
Very strange negative fixation, indeed. Sorry to call someone out, but this person shows up rating every Lovett album! The thing that's most comical to me is that Kavity Killer reviews Lyle more than any other artist. Most people spend their time reviewing artists they actually LIKE, comparing and contrasting the quality of that artist's different albums...cross referencing other artists ("If you like..., you'd enjoy..."). Does anyone else just find it very odd that someone would spend so much time reviewing EVERY album of ANY artist with a 1*? I mean, I don't enjoy Aaron Neville's music...therefore, I don't waste my time or anyone else's reviewing ALL his albums.
We get it, dude...you only like blues music with a little bit of Paul Simon & Springsteen sprinkled in! It's kind of baffling why you waste so much time and space on Lyle Lovett.
By the way...if you like Lyle Lovett, "Joshua Judges Ruth" is a stong album. Well worth purchasing. Great musicians, great storyteller, cool voice.
An Actual Texan's Perspective.......2005-12-30
Speaking of "self-conscious 'Clev-R-Ness'TM", it's a good thing that Kavity Killer can hide his trembling adolescent frame behind the safe anonymity of the Internet. Because unlike him, I know a few actual cowboys, and they'd be all too happy to kick his a-- in a second. Apparently this kid has it in for Lyle, which only makes sense. I mean, a pale skinny guy writing country songs about relationships? How dare he. How dare Hank Williams, for that matter. Now THAT is some stone-cold rhetoric right there. Truth is, Lyle Lovett is a Texas institution, beloved in both rural and urban areas. "Joshua Judges" is of course more of the same, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Lovett's signature folk-country has graced many a BBQ and country drive. Yes, I'm sure some of those fans DO drive Suburbans, but then again so do fans of kavity killer's beloved Van Morrison. This album features some of the most sinewy, unsettling love songs -- the kind many a cowboy has lived and could understand. If kavity killer would leave his computer, he might too someday. Would Tuco from "Good, Bad..." listen to this? I dunno; he's a Hollywood actor. But I do know that Clint does. If that doesn't settle it, I dunno what does.
No apologies for the non-kosher "direct reply" review; it had to be done.

Voices of Light, inspired by the classic French silent film "The Passion of Joan of Arc," works as a cinematic accompaniment, but it's not movie music. Influenced by minimalism and the likes of Gorecki and Part, Einhorn's music is tonal and accessible. The texts--in Latin and antique French--are from the Bible, and from writings by (mostly) medieval women, including Joan of Arc herself. Joan is represented by the reliably intelligent and well-tuned Anonymous 4 (Ruth Cunningham, Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer and Johanna Rose); soprano Susan Narucki sings her often high-flying lines with beauty and clarity. --Sarah Bryan Miller
Customer Reviews:
Voices of Light is great.......2007-05-21
Voices of Light is powerful and inspiring chorale music and this recording does it justice.
Pater Noster.......2007-04-11
This music is wonderful on its own but see the film with this music when you get the chance. The music is wonderful and tells the story all by itself.
If you're a chant or opera fan, this is for you.......2007-03-10
While original The Passion of Joan of Arc was a silent movie, Voices of Light added so much to the film that I cannot watch it without the music. Each piece is designed to project such strong emotion, that even in the brief time each track plays, my emotions are escalated to the highest extent. Beautiful and moving, worth every penny.
One more voice in the chorus of appreciation for this album.......2006-09-30
When I came to do a little review of Richard Einhorn's 'Voices of Light', I was expecting the usually light showing of reviews and responses we see on most classical recordings. I was delighted to find there were already two excellent reviews here and dozens of appreciative responses. To those who may be following me here from my reviews with the point of view of the interested amateur listener, my primary contribution is this. I am very fond of 'The Anonymous Four', but after listening to a dozen recordings of their interpretations of various obscure Medieval Codices, I am truly delighted to be here to hear them do an interesting modern work. 'Voices of Light' is immencely reverent, without being conventional 'occasional music' for a liturgy. It is not quite Bach 's B-Minor Mass, but then who want's to eat foie gras all the time.
I echo other comments in strongly recommending you give this one a listen.
Pretty good.......2006-07-11
I first heard this music on WNYC in New York. The music was captivating so I ordered the CD version I found on Amazon. Somehow the CD does not seem quite as good as the version I heard on WNYC, which I think was from a live performance in New York. Nevertheless, I find myself listening to the CD quite often, especially when I am trying to relax and focus. It is worth the purchase.

John Rutter's groundbreaking research and subsequent performing edition of Fauré's beloved Requiem has enabled us to hear the work as the composer originally intended. His first version of the piece included only a chamber orchestra with lower strings, harp, timpani, and organ. Four years later, Fauré added two movements and slightly expanded the orchestration. This is the version that Rutter and his inimitable Cambridge Singers perform here-- and it's a glorious revelation, especially if the only Fauré Requiem you've heard is that for full orchestra, which the composer himself neither created nor approved. Rutter and his singers give us a wonderfully sumptuous yet detailed performance that benefits tremendously from the newly realized clarity of inner lines and from the richly colored orchestral textures. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
It's Beauty Revealed, At Last.......2007-01-11
This Collegium COLCD 109 is a later release of the Collegium COLCD 101 which I purchased circa 1985 after reading glowing reviews in Grammophone magazine. COLCD 101 is labeled Stereo/Digital. COLCD 109 is labeled Stereo/DDD. Is it a re-mastering? Liner notes don't say, but the new version provides noticeable improvements in vividness and clarity.
The release of COLCD 101 was a watershed event. John Rutter had questioned conventional performance versions of Faure's Requiem, those which used full symphony orchestras and Wagnerian-like soloists. Yes, it is a requiem, but Faure's ideas are very different than those found in, say, Verdi's Requiem. Instead of hellfire and damnation, Faure evokes serenity, peace and love. Rutter's historical research proved that Faure intended for his work to be performed in small, intimate settings where the orchestra and choir would be minimal and, maybe, use boy sopranos. Rutter's CD of the historical, 1893, version is like an expert restoration of an old painting where a century's grime is wiped away and the work is newly revealed in it's original beauty.
A 1990's CD of the 1893 version exists on Naxos 8.55076S by Jeremy Summerly and the Oxford Camerata. It, too, is beautiful and of similar performance quality, though conducted at a slightly slower tempo. I find Rutter's version more "right", but that's just personal preference.
OK, I'm a sucker for the 1893 version.......2006-01-17
John Rutter made substantial changes to the previously most-performed version of the Faure Requiem when he recorded this. He went back to the version of 1893 to do so, rather than using the more famous, more heavily orchestrated later version. One difference is that the violins in the Sanctus are transposed up an octave on this CD compared to the way in which they were played in the later Requiem. I find this recording to be beautiful and timeless, and definitely not over-orchestrated.
To me, Faure's great contribution with the Requiem was that he showed a firm refusal to judge other people as well as compassion in the face of death. This went against the beliefs of the Catholic church at the time, which emphasized hellfire and brimstone, and Faure was heavily criticized for putting as little mention in as he could get away with regarding the Day of Judgement. This compassion shows in his work and makes it comforting rather than frightening. It has been called a "lullaby of death."
I also enjoy the other vocal pieces, particularly the Ave Maria and the Cantique de Jean Racine, which is probably familiar to many people who are not really aware of Faure's career. These songs have a pure, clear sound which is not ruined through excessive orchestration.
In my opinion, John Rutter did a fantastic job with this material, and it's one of my favorite CDs.
Life has been engulfed in time.......2003-08-06
This requiem represents a complete shift in the general tone of the requiem as a genre. The vision of life and death is impregnated with a feminine light, the light of the ocean softly illuminated by the sunshine of Normandy, of the Graceful Coast. The figure that stands behind the music, that accompanies the dead person into the grave is no longer the masculine Germanic death that punishes man, nor even the furious feminine French death that challenges man, but the soft and comforting figure of the mother Mary, the universal comforter who takes the hand of each one of us, as if we were crying lost children, to make us pass the dangerous door that leads beyond life. This Holy Mary for whom Fauré has written so many Ave Marias, is promising us the end of time and our introduction into an everlasting stormless, painless and noiseless world that represents the very positive vision of a real world that is the negative vision of life. Photography is not far away. Everyday life becomes a life of strife, struggle, noise, violence, war, speed, work, exploitation and alienation, all elements seen as negative, and death is the negation of it all, is the positive virtuality that has to become our reality overthere. It is thus in perfect agreement with the vision the impressionists introduced to defy photography and bring art beyond the blaring image of reality a photographer brings up with his machine. The eye of the artist goes beyond those crude colors and forms to find light and life in the depth of his retina. Fauré is the impressionist painter of death as the real life beyond the surface we have to contemplate and suffer everyday. In other words virtual is beautiful and real is dreadful. Happiness has to be found in virtuality and not in reality. Fauré is bergsonian, who sees eternity beyond the flow of time. Fauré is proustian, who sees life beyond the loss of memory. This explains the erasing of the Dies Irae because there is no anger any more in the ascent to the eternal memory of what does not exist yet. This is a requiem of timelessness and nightlessness.
Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, University of Perpignan
Requiem- a masterpiece........2002-04-21
This exquisite collection has so many gorgeous songs that move me to tears. In Sanctus, the violin is so pure, so beautiful, its wrings my heart. This is real music, real art, crafted with such care, that it is a true privilege to hear it, not to mention sing it (which I have done, and I loved it). It is an encredible CD, and I would encourage anyone to buy it.

high quality but lacking emotion.......2001-09-01
One reviewer describes this as "no lack of sadness, bright, not gloomy, filled with sunshine"; another calls it "peaceful". I might go with peaceful. The quality is high and the recording is of interest for being more faithful to Faure's original, non-orchestral version, but I found the performance notably lacking in emotion. I would steer the reader toward the more deeply moving Naxos version (conductor: Jeremy Summerly), which is something of a gem at budget price.

As one would expect from the man who made Young People's Concerts famous, Leonard Bernstein's vintage 1960 treatment of this classic kids' piece is magically engaging. Lenny narrates it himself, and draws a radiant performance from the Philharmonic. --Ted Libbey

Orchestra Guide Music.......2006-11-04
Classical children's introduciton to orchestral music; this version is well-performed, and eminently suitable for portable CD players.
Good Music But Poor Story Telling!.......2005-08-09
Bernstein is usually good at communicating the essence of classical Music.Listen to his exposition of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony in the sony classical Release-"How A Great Symphony was Written".Here however he seems to be totally confused whether he is the conductor or Story Teller and struggles to make a Start! He starts tentatively with a Quiz!
For a superb story telling and terrific performance I strongly recommend Lorin Maazel with the French National Orchestra,A DG release(MUSIKFEST LABEL).The narration by Alec Clunes is absolutely delightful.Thank you very much Mr Alec Clunes! The voice modulation and characterisation is spontaneous and infectitious!Lorin maazel does a neat job with Britten's "Young Person's Guide to The Orchestra".Highly recommended for repeated Listening.
Great CD -- Take if from a music teacher!.......2004-02-11
I am an elementary music teacher, and I use all three of these works in my classroom. "Peter and the Wolf" is a great introduction to classical music for my kindergarten and first grade, and Britten's "Young Persons Guide" is a great way to introduce the instruments of the orchestra. "Carnival of the Animals" is a hit with all of my students.
I have individual recordings of each of these works at school, but I still prefer to bring in my Bernstein CD from home. There is something truly excellent about the Bernstein narration; his calm manner reminds me of another of my heroes, Fred Rogers.
I especially enjoy that Bernstein chose to include young people (ages 13 to 23) in "Carnival of the Animals." The kids are really excited to hear someone close to their age.
Maybe Bernstein isn't new or flashy, but he is a welcome break from the copious flash in my students' lives.
A Parent.......2001-08-21
It's a five star in my 4 year-old's eyes. She absolutely loves Peter and the Wolf. The best CD I've bought her yet.
Update: Now over a year later, my daughter still loves this CD. She has me play it for her EVERY DAY when I take her home from kindergarten. We've sampled other versions, but we both think that Bernstein's version is the BEST. In spite of the other reviewer's opinion, we believe he did a masterful job "telling" the story rather that sounding like he's reading it. The instrumental performance is superior and never loses her interest. Some of the other versions sound like they were recorded in a tin can. This one is superb.
She likes the Carnival of the Animals (esp. the LION), but she prefers Peter and the Wolf.
I've gotten more than my money's worth out of this one. I heartedly recommend it to any parent!!
My favorite "Young Person's Guide".......2001-04-19
While it's true that Bernstein's narration is sometimes awkward, I find even the awkwardness appealing - it's like listening to your childless uncle who doesn't know how to talk to kids. "Peter and the Wolf" brings back childhood memories of acting out the piece with my cousins; the wolf's theme still sounds pleasantly scarey to me. But over the years my favorite piece on this album has become "A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra," which is narrated not by Bernstein but by a young boy. His clear, simple speaking style is perfect, and nicely paced. By the way, this CD is essentially the same as "Bernstein's Favorites - Children's Classics." The cover art is less cutesy, and the music has been digitally remastered - but on my modest CD player the difference isn't noticeable.

Director David Lynch's affection for kitschy lounge music and emotionally overwrought mid-century pop has long since proven to be more than trend or irony; indeed, it's often the uneasy spiritual axis of his films. The soundtrack of Mulholland Dr. turns on the usual Lynchian motifs (the brooding atmosphere of Angelo Badalamenti's ominous synth-and-orchestra cues tossed with a dash of Lynch's own off-center compositions), yet manages to evoke a sense of foreboding that's distinctly its own. Badalamenti leads off with a curve, the nervous orchestra swing-romp "Jitterbug," before descending into a dark soundscape that becomes murkier and more avant-goth at every turn. Bubbling through that morass are pop nuggets variously cheesy (Dave Cavanaugh's lounge-ready "The Beast"), lugubriously bluesy (Sonny Boy Williamson's take on Willie Dixon's "Bring It On Home"), and alternately innocent ("I've Told Every Little Star") and liturgical ("Llorando"). Three tracks of the director's own (cowritten with John Neff) skulking Lounge Music from Hell ratchet up the tension even further; it's the perfect garnish for this darkly delicious film-music cocktail. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
In this dream, you are Betty Elms.......2007-01-13
The reviews here simply don't do justice to the soundtrack. It's very hypnotizing and elevates you to this reality that you indeed have the same mental energy displayed by the first character of Betty Elms, who Diane Selwyn identifies with as herself in a dream she is having. The dark scenery conveyed by this music puts you in her place, where through darkness you hold to your innocence. The movie and music interplay in this way to the effect of putting you in that darkness where you are the same girl that Diane is seeing in her dream, the girl she knows herself to be without the hellish reality she is in as a sort of resolve to the hell she's in. This Naomi Watts specifically conveyed what I thought is a part of me that may also be a part of you, and you will notice it in the way you look at things and how your face expresses your innocence to a dark world. Then there is the music for Rita. I also reviewed the movie, which I also recommend. My favorite track is the 9th one in this respect. Secondly, which you may find suitable for your funeral, is the last song. The rest I almost prefer watching the movie and appreciating it all while viewing, but it's music you must have after you've seen it.
Badalamenti does it again........2006-11-17
If you're a fan of Angelo Badalamenti's scores for David Lynch, you'll want to add this to your collection as well. Haunting synth pieces lull you into the dreamlike world Lynch created with this film, and there are some other types of music to jazz it up a little. Particularly striking is Rebekah Del Rio's cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying."
Take a drive through David Lynch's musical hell and deluding darkness..........2006-06-26
To start of, I regard "Mulholland Dr." as David Lynch magnum opus, his most masterfully created cinema of deceit, lust and darkness. Compelling, totally deranged, original, sometimes hilarious funny, and three minutes later scary as hell.
David Lynch's movies are always heavy set on atmosphere, and this is partly caused by the director's long time musical collaborator Angelo Badalamenti. From the jazzy, loungy tunes for the t.v. series "Twin Peaks" to the dark overtones of "Blue Velvet", Badalamenti knows wich buttons to push to make an eerie composition, a few notes of estrangeness and give the audience an unsetteling feeling.
"Mulholland Dr." is filled with music. Most of it is purely on the soundrack with Badalamenti's score coming very close to high quality dark ambient acts like Lustmord, Raison d'Etre or Hazard, others are sung "live" in the movie, like Linda Scott's sweet bubblegumish "I've told every little star", two very hip tunes ("The beast" by Milt Buckner and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bring it on home") and of course Rebekah Del Rio's acapella performance of "llorando", the Spanish version of Roy Orbison's evergreen.
But the greatest surprise to me were three tracks by David Lynch himself in collaboration with one John Neff. And these three pieces are to be find on a solo cd by David Lynch called "Blue Bob".
I never knew before seeing "Mulholland Dr." that David Lynch is also a guiter player and singer. Now I know and I must say that his song "Mountains falling" is the most brooding, creeping, swirling and erotic sounding piece of electric guitar music I have ever heard.
So play this album and hit the road, Jack. And pray that indeed you will come back...
dark and (often) beautiful.......2005-11-25
anyone who has seen mulholland drive knows that the soundtrack lent a very important hand to the overall vibe of the movie. so you would think that it would be hard to enjoy one without the other, but this soundtrack suceeds very well on its own. alot of film scores are fine and enhance the movie while yr watching it, but are trash when taken alone and this sndtrk is kind of above that. i'm not really big on any of the lynch/neff tracks, but they work fine in the movie. the other songs that weren't written by badalamenti are pretty good and are a nice change of pace. my favorite tracks are dwarfland/love theme (especially the latter half), mulholland drive/love theme, llorando, and diane and camilla. i dont believe that diane and camilla was in the movie, but its a very beautiful piece that i think sums up the diane/camilla relationship quite well. anyway, i really like this cd and anyone who enjoyed the film would do well to pick this up
A dark journey through the sphere of horror........2005-10-26
It may not be a horror movie, but the score for Mulholland Drive could be a journey through the ultimate graveyard or haunted house on a stormy Halloween night. I have never even seen the movie, though I love David Lynch's movies for the most part. This score is a dark and haunting musical journey that might work well for a score to a creepy vampire movie or something. Some of it, including the heavy jazzy and dark rock pieces, might be better suited for a suspense thriller, which it is. But the more ambient dark themes could work in any supernatural thriller much as Mark Snow's music could. Enjoy the tour! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Dustin Ruth rocks!.......2007-07-02
It's hard to rate music- everyone has different things they like. As for me, I'm not a music critic, but I really enjoyed this CD. The music is well done, there's a variety of songs, the lyrics are earnest and sincere, and the guys in the band are nice.
I've listened to it about a dozen times in the past 3 days- "Well With Soul" sticks in my brain in a soothing, mantra-like way. I love "Cross The Line"- the music video on YouTube is great!
Thanks, Dustin, for sharing your gift with the world!

One Foot In, One Foot Out opent stevig stampend. Eerste radiosingle Cross This Line (...'do with me as You want me') mindert vaart, terwijl de titeltrack weer staat als een huis en Here To New York in een countryrock setting bidt om Gods hulp ('take this heart and make it clean..'). Halverwege het rustige Mr. Turner versterken drums, gitaren en piano elkaar tot de passie zoals je die van Coldplay of Keane kent. Work It Out en Standing Still zijn wat ruwer materiaal. De ballad Figure You Out ('there is no one quite like your love') legt het dubbele in Ruth's teksten bloot. Liefdesliedje en worship liggen dicht bij elkaar. In You Are is het duidelijk het laatste ("You are the waves that I feel when I'm sinking / You are the storms that I feel when I'm dying / You are God / I know / You are God"). Na het midtempo Love Me Like You Do en het open Always Yours sluit de sfeervolle mix van Starflyer 59 en Keane, Well With Soul, tekstueel een twist op de klassieker It Is Well With My Soul, af. Smaakvolle rock. Doe nog maar een tweede ronde!

"Miss Rhythm" never disappoints.......2006-11-19
Frankie Laine always referred to Ruth Brown as "Miss Rhythm." Frankie was rather perceptive; Ruth possessed a unique strength in both her stage presence and incredible voice. Ruth could sing not only R&B; she could even handle those songs with an awesome twist of an early rock and roll flavor that few could ever match. This CD proves it.
The CD starts off with the comparatively slow paced "So Long;" and then moves quickly into two snazzy songs: "Teardrops From My Eyes" and "I'll Wait For You." Terrific! The musical arrangements are equally well done. "I Know" is another coup for Ruth; she mixes a bluesy song with a touch of early 50's rock and roll and the result is perfect! I also like the way Ruth emotes so beautifully with a strong piano arrangement in the song "5-10-15 Hours." Ruth also does a great job with "(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean." Although the lyrics are sad, the song has a catchy melody and this is very easy on the ears! SMILE
Other great songs on this CD include "Mambo Baby" in which The Rhythmakers accompany Ruth; the attractively slow paced blues song entitled "I Can See Everybody's Baby;" the catchy "As Long As I'm Moving;" the slick "I Want To Do More;" and the upbeat and playful "Lucky Lips." Moreover, Clyde McPhatter joins Ruth to sing "Love Has Joined Us Together."
There's still more. There are two live tracks released for the first time ever on this CD: "(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean" and "Oh What A Dream." These were recorded at Ruth's concert at Herndon Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia in May 1959. A nice plus!
The sound quality throughout is excellent when you consider that these recordings were made several decades ago. The liner notes contain a lengthy essay about Ruth's professional career and personal life by Peter A. Grendysa as well as great black and white photos of Ruth during her career.
One minor disappointment is that this CD only presents Ruth's work at Atlantic Records during the years 1949 through 1959. I wish this were a more comprehensive two CD set including songs Ruth recorded in her later years. More live recordings would have been wonderful, too!
Nevertheless, this CD is an excellent introduction to the magic of Ruth Brown. Ruth, "The Queen Of The Jukebox," never disappointed her fans. Her passing saddens me but thanks to CDs like this one we will forever remember her celebrated talent. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Ruth Brown and fans of both classic R&B and R&B/Soul music. Moreover, if you want to become acquainted with the incredible talents of Ruth Brown this is the perfect CD to start your collection!
The Queen Of Rock and Roll.......2004-06-22
If Rock and Roll would've stayed on the same course as the late Alan Freed envisioned, this lady would be called the Queen of Rock and Roll today. You see, Freed's original Rock and Roll didn't include the likes of Elvis and teen idols like Paul Anka and Frankie Avalon or Bobby Rydell. Instead it included artists who were the innovators of pure uncommercialized Rock and Roll. The Moonglows,Wynonie Harris,Little Richard,Hank Ballard and The Midnighters,Little Willie John, Louis Jordan,Johnny Ace,The Dominoes,Laverne Baker,Big Joe Turner,Clyde McPhatter and The Drifters,Roy Brown, and this lady Ruth Brown. One of the reviewers on this post says that this cd contains only 2 minor hits that Ruth had in her career. That is the most untrue statement I have ever heard concerning an artist. In fact, her 2 pop charters are the smallest hits she ever had and are 2 of the most unrecognizable amongst true Rock and Roll fans.Let's now get to and correct the facts. Between 1950 and 1955 Ruth scored 5 #1 hits on Billboards R&B charts. Yes I said R&B charts, they were just as important and significant back then as they are today. Although not labeled as such, these 5 #1 smashes were probably all million sellers for Ruth and Atlantic records. In fact Atlantic records used to be referred to as "The House That Ruth Built". Her biggest hit period-pop or r&b-or (otherwise) came in 1950 with "Teardrops From My Eyes". I have no doubt that this was probably a million selling 78. It was #1 for 11 weeks on Billboards R&B chart and stayed on the charts for 25 weeks total. Simply a massive-massive hit that year. Her second #1 hit is a registered million seller that came in April of 1952, the hit "5-10-15 Hours" was #1 for a full 7 weeks . The next #1 for Ruth came in February of 1953 and easily is her most recognized and trademark song, the classic "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean" was #1 for 5 weeks. In August of 1954 came another #1 classic, the great ballad written by Chuck Willis for Ruth called "Oh What A Dream".The song was #1 for 8 weeks and in all likelihood sold a million discs. Keep in mind I'm just naming her #1's during these years,Ruth had many top 10's also during these years.Ruth Weston hit #1 again in October of 1954 with "Mambo Baby".It was #1 for 1 week and was on the charts for 3 months. Now to the small potatoes-Ruth's 2 pop charters are not-I repeat-are not her biggest hits or most recognizable hits. The songs 'Lucky Lips" and "This little Girl's Gone Rockin"were her only top 40 pop charters in her career and made it to #24 and #25 respectively on the pop charts in 1957 and 1958 but are a million miles away from being her biggest sellers or hits or even her most recognizable hits. I am so sorry so many people were not exposed to her massive hits and best work she recorded between 1950 and 1955,but such were the times. After the 50's came to a close,Ruth never scored another hit on the R&B charts during the soulful 60'S except for "Don't Deceive Me" at the beginning of the decade. But she did honor us with 2 top 10 classics before the 60's hastily ushered it's way in and that was 1959's #5 hit and classic "I Don't Know" and 1960's #10 classic "Don't Deceive Me". "I Don't Know" is her best late 50's song. So now I feel so much better now that I've corrected a few people. Ruth is the Queen of Rock and Roll and Wynonie Harris is The King of Rock and Roll and this cd needs to be in your collection especially if you dig Rock the way the late Alan Freed envisioned it.I'm venturing off now into amazon land to correct other folks. Keep Rockin and a Rollin'
Don't Forget Ruth Brown; a 50's Great!.......2003-07-27
Don't ever forget Ruth Brown, one of the greatest female rock singers of the 1950's. She had the two minor hits on this CD, Lucky Lips and This Little Girl's Gone Rockin', but there is so much more. Every cut on this CD is an absolute winner. She is greatly overlooked but I think she tops Etta James and LaVerne Baker. This is a terrific CD and she is the best!
RUTH BROWN IS ANOTHER 50'S DIVA!.......2003-07-22

AND LET IT TAKE YOU BACK. THEY ARE HER ORIGINAL RECORDINGS TOO!
Great Music! Bad remaster!.......2002-03-17
I love Ruth Brown. She's the original strong woman of popular music. (Well, her and Big Momma Thorton, maybe.) She sings very frankly about what she wants, what he did, what she wishes he'd do, and what things will be like when he does it. On this disc, more often that not she's got a nice phat sound, with a rollicking band next to her. Just about every song makes me wanna bounce.
Ruth Brown's songs are just great, and will definitely get you where you're going when you're working or driving or just cleaning the house - your favorite uses may vary.
The only issue I have with this disc is that the remaster isn't up to where I think it should be. I would have liked a crisper sound than what I'm hearing on it. I recognize and respect the allure of the crackle-ee acoustic sound, but that's not why I purchase CDs. It's not a big issue; but it does keep me from giving out the fifth star.
It shouldn't keep you from getting this fantibulous CD though! The world today needs more Ruth Brown... if only to remind us that being plain spoken is better!

Excellent!.......2007-03-05
I bought this version of the Requiem after doing some research on the various completions. Prior to that I'd been studying several of the late Haydn Masses and had a fairly good sense of the conventions of late 18th century liturgical music. My first listen to Sussmeyer's completion after looking at the Haydn left me really dissatisfied with what Sussmeyer had done with the work. It sounded pretty lame especially the truncated fugues at the end of the Sactus and Benedictus.
When I got this CD I went straight for the Lacrymosa. It's my favorite movement of the whole work. The completion by Levin includes a fugual Amen based on a fragment that as best as musicologists can tell was intended as the basis for the end of the Lacrymosa. This differs considerably from Sussmeyers massive two chord Amen. Mozart had totally assimilated the contrapuntal language of Bach and Handel, but his student was probably simply not up to the task of completing the fugue. That's my guess. Anyway, as I listened to Levin's completion of the Lacrymosa, it sounded a little weird at first. The things I was used to being in certain places were altered a little. The convention in liturgical music of the period was to end on a half cadence before going into a fugal ending. Sussmeyer does a full authentic candence before doing his big Amen. Levin follows the convention of the period leaving things hanging in expectation of the fugue. Sure, that sounds technical, but Levin's version just sounds better. As I listened to it I felt like I was hearing something much closer to what Mozart would have done. It was spine-tingly, like Levin was almost channeling Mozart. The Amen fugue is extremely well done and almost totally convincing. There are a few passages that are a little iffy (Mozart would have done it better), but the overall effect is a more convincing end to the Sequence, actually very uplifting. I totally love it. Levin's reworking of Sussmeyer's compositional contributions are a definite improvement without potentially throwing out the baby with the bathwater. The reworkings of the fugues at the ends of the Sanctus and Benedictus are drastic improvements. They're simply vastly superior to Sussmeyer's work. They flow naturally and cadence idiomatically for the better (I would have ended on a full major chord rather than an open fifth - that follows Mozart's own practice). In these passages Levin ends up being a better 18th century composer that Sussmeyer was.
Oh yeah, the performance... It's very good. I'd like to hear John Elliot Gardiner do this version, but short of that I'd recommend it highly. Very clear and precise, excellent tempi, good balance between the choir and the orchestra.
The Definitive Requiem.......2007-02-27
When I first purchased this 1994 recording of Robert Levin's reconstructed version Mozart's Requiem, I was honestly a bit skeptical. I thought to myself, should anyone, even an reknowned expert like Levin, really be messing around with this masterpiece? Who could even approach Mozart's genius? But once I did a little research, and read the very informative notes included with this disc, I realized how much of the standard Sussmayr version is certainly not what Mozart would have intended, and varies from the most common practices in sacred works of the 18th century. Of course, we will never now how exactly Mozart would have completed this masterpiece, but I think pianist/composer Robert Levin has come as close as anyone ever will. In fact, Levin puts the Requiem into its historical/musical context brilliantly and I think Mozart himself would be proud. This cd is truly the most magnificent and moving version I have ever heard. I also own an acclaimed disc of the Requiem with Arleen Auger, but this disc easily surpasses it. The accoustics are incredible, and Martin Pearlman and the Boston Baroque have given us a most remarkable recording that will be the definitive version for years to come.
Outstanding!.......2006-05-31
I sampled about ten other recordings of Mozart's Requiem before deciding on this one. Among them were the Bernstein, Solti, Von Karajan, Marriner, and Harnoncourt versions. This recording stood out for its historical accuracy, expression, interpretation, and quality of sound.
First, one should note that this is the Levin edition of the Requiem. While many will prefer the Sussmayer for its historicity and personal connection to Mozart, Levin's edition stands out in that some of Mozarts unused skecthes are included (notably in the Amen) and a good number of the harmonies are fixed. While Levin is a modern musicologist, he has a deep understanding of Mozart's intent and it shows through.
The Boston Baroque orchestra has a perfect feel for the Baroque/Classical tempi and rhythms. The sound of each instrument is clear and distinct without losing the dramatic extremes of the music or sacrificing orchestral depth in the process. The orchestra plays with the gusto and arrogance of the Classical era and larger orchestras simply cannot compete with the mechanical accuracy of the smaller, period ensemble.
The soloists are excellent, though I have never heard of any of them. They sing well alone or together with rich tones and perfect trills. Each of them demonstrates a strong understanding of Classical singing technique with warm timbres and good diction.
The choir stands out above them all, however. While the other recordings I listened to have oversized choirs, the Boston Baroque is audibly small, but highly capable. Their sound is commanding, but never blurry and every consonant is clear. While the larger choirs on other recordings sound truly epic in scope, they lack the emotional impact and clarity in the cadneza passages. I have never heard a more well balanced, perfectly tuned, and emotionally satisfying choir.
Pearlman's conducting is first rate; he knows the Baroque and Classical periods intimately and it shows through in the brisk tempi (such as the Dies Irae) and measured slow sections, notably the Lux Aeterna.
Telarc truly nailed the recording quality on the head in their balance of bass, treble, and clarity. There is a great deal of dynamic range in the music from soft to loud and the sound only seems to get better as you crank up the volume. There are no cracks, pops, or hisses to be found and the sound is remarkably live with little backspace or static. This is a first rate recording and a fantastic interpretation of Mozart's used and often-abused music.
The new gold standard.......2006-01-30
First, if you've listened to or owned a "traditional" recording of the Requiem (I have Karajan's 1962) hold on to your hat, because the tempos will knock your socks off.
I already have BB's Bach Orchestral Suites (which gets all 4 on one CD) and I was STILL surprised.
Second, the Levin reconstruction is a more than worthy replacement of the traditional Sussmayr, including the completion of the Amen fugue and cleaning up some harmonic lines.
And, finally, the sound! This is clean, crisp and bright.
Accept no substitutes; if you like the Requiem, run out and buy this now.
Excelente requiem.......2002-10-22

Bicentennial Military Music.......2007-03-28
The music from these three US Military Bands was originally released in 1977 as single Long Playing Records to celebrate the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration. It is missing the US ARMY BAND (which I regret) but otherwise the music is GREAT and the Bands are FIRST CLASS as you might expect. Except for the different services renderings of THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, no marches are duplicated. If you enjoy good foot tapping Martial Music...this 2-CD set is worth the price.
Disappointed listener.......2006-05-13
I have been listening to military band music for years, and am rarely disappointed. However, this compendium of music by the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine bands and associated choral groups is not to my taste. Many of the arrangements are strange, and there is much too much vocal music when what I want to hear is the bands play. I would not have bought this album hhad I known beforehand what I know now.
Classic US Service Band Recordings!.......2005-08-10
Its nice to see these old RCA recordings brought out on CD. These were originally released on LP back in the early 1960s to help finance the Kennedy Center in DC. They were popular recordings then. Unfortunatley only three out of the original four are offered here. Missing is the US Army Band which also recorded as part of this series. The sound qaulity has been left largely as it was, which wes pretty good for early 1960s. The only problem with the original recordings was that they tended to sound poor on the inner tracks of the LP. Fortunately that problem no longer exists on CD. Due to the format there tends to be some repeat material here. How many times do we have to hear the national anthem played by each band! Still, there are some good selections played when these bands were in their prime and larger than they are today. Its good to see recordings being re-issued on US service bands other than Altissimo! which tends to use just in-the-can material from band libraries. Here we have the original stuff played in a manner which is no longer done today. For those seeking vintage recordings of US service bands you can't go wrong here.
