My 12 month old loves this CD and happily bops away to the music (in the car he sometimes even starts singing!). We like it too and not being very well versed in Classical music, it is a nice mix for us.

Better than baby einstein.......2006-02-26

This is a great CD, with great music, at a great price. Everyone seems to love Baby Einstein, but I don't like the plinking music on those CD's, I like real orchestral pieces to stimulate my child. This is exactly what parents need, at a good price!

I got this cd to use as background when putting my 18 month old to sleep and for car rides. So far it has not made it out of the car. The cd is wonderful. The first song is the Luftansa airline comercial song (that is what my husband calls it) and is beautiful. I didn't think my husband would enjoy the cd at all but he doesn't mind one bit listening to it, he actually will put it on himself when we get in the car. My daughter loves it and will often start nodding her head back and forth to songs. I actually listen to it even when my daughter is not in the car. The music is soft and relaxing but not boring. It is also one of the only cd's that my in laws don't mind listening to when they are in the car with us.

I only paid like $4 here on amazon for it and I gladdly would of paid more for such a great cd. Its a great cd for such a great price!

My whole family has enjoyed this CD. It is very upbeat and easy to listen to. I think there is something for everyone on this one.

I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.

Masterful!.......2005-06-15

This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.

Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07

I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Ahh, Florence!!.......2002-10-14

Italian culture during the period from the 14th to the 16th centuries was a whirlwind of developing literature and art, and during this period of history Florence was a political and cultural center to rival Milan or Verona.
I love medieval and renaissance music. They are the "roots" of the great classics centuries later. One does not cultivate a complete education of art by studying only such Masters as Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali etc. So it is with fine music.
These CD's contain examples of Florentine musical composition from the 1300's and 1500's. The first CD, performed by David Munrow and the Early Music Consort, covers compositions from the 1300's, with many of the works of Francesco Landini, the most prolific Florentine composer of this period. The second covers music from the 1500's and is performed by John Beckett and the Musica Reservata. Here we can see the early development of both symphonic structure and opera.
Both discs are wonderful examples of different periods in the history of musical development, and performed by different conductors and artists. Therefore a comparison between the two is unfair and misplaced. David Munrow and the Early Music Consort are superb, as I have always found them to be, and John Beckett and the Musica Reservata are equally enjoyable.
If you appreciate early music you will find this recording to be a fantastic addition to your collection, and perhaps the definitive collection of early Italian music. If you are unfamiliar with early music or with Italian Renaissance music then these CD's would be a wonderful introduction.

Best Italian Renaissance disc available........2002-06-28

This re-issue of recordings from the early 70's by the Early Music Consort Of London is,in my opinion,the best recordings of Italian Renaissance works.It is the favorite of my eary music discs,and includes music treasures from 14th and 16th century Florence. Great listening on both discs,and worth the money!

Munrow is magnificent.......2001-11-20

The first disc in this collection is delightful. David Munrow's recorder is a genuine treat. The vocal parts blend well and create a festive atmosphere. The Early Music Consort of London offer a splendid performance. By contrast, the second disc, which features Musica Reservata, is a bit disappointing. Two of the solo voices on disc two are harsh, detracting from an otherwise pleasant recording. They may fairly represent the performing style of sixteenth century Florence, but that is small consolation for the twentieth century ear. Nonetheless, the virtues of the first disc are sufficient to warrant purchasing this collection. Munrow is magnificent.

this is a superb recording of early music it is well performed and played. the first cd is all music from the 1300,s and the second is from the 1500,s if you like the kind of music this is the cd to get well worth it.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

It's only snippets of the music!.......2006-02-12

This CD only contains 30-60 second long snippets of each of the pieces. It could be a teaching tool but is not something you can just put on to listen. It does contain reference to popular TV and Film works that contain the music.

Good Heavens!!! What was that?.......2005-04-10

The other day, I was listening to one of Tebaldi's live Toscas, and then in the end scene where Tosca sings "O Scarpia, avanti a Dio!", Tebaldi utters out an unearthly scream that could, instead of freezing your blood, wake up the laughing dead!!! Not that it was horrible, but then that was simply one of the main reasons why my tastes have strayed farther and farther away from verismo.

Anyhow, regarding this disc, I think most of the selections from verismo are sung wonderfully. Tebaldi was a verismo singer, and a good dramatic one at that. Her Verdian voice was good, but quite lacking in some arias. The Wagner selections, sung in Italian, were quite good, although I still prefer Callas' "Dolce e calmo" to hers.

And then...bel canto. No! Never never never! Tebaldi should never have made any attempts to sing bel canto roles, even if they are in the studio! It only shows how limited her vocal flexibility is! Tebaldi can be enjoyed in Puccini just fine, but don't let her do Bellini or Donizetti! Goodness knows what she would have sounded like if she had tackled Rossini! Ack! The horror! Imagine Rosina screaming like that live Tosca!

This is a good recital for Tebaldi fans, but please don't even think about listening to the excerpts from Nabucco, Sonnambula, Norma, Puritani, and Don Carlo!!!! Those are simply nightmares I must tell you!!!! Nightmares!!!! She doesn't even attempt "Ah non giunge!" from Sonnambula! My goodness Amina was left asleep! But of course, Tebaldi would have died if she had sung Amina's final aria! And then there's the excerpt from I Puritani...how slow!! And her Ah bello a mi ritorna!!!! Horrible!!! She shouldn't try to be Callas! Nowhere in her great career will she ever approach the great Callas' repertoire or insight!

There is nothing on this collection of arias/songs that I dislike. All are sung beautifully, with utmost artistry and dramatic emotion.
Tebaldi never had the severe vocal crisis of Maria Callas, so even in these last years there isn't even a semblance of a wobble. That is not an attack on La Callas it is simply the truth. Throughout her life, Tebaldi had a good, solid technique and a lush velvety tone only exemplified by the acquisition of full, chest tones towards the end of her career.
There are, of course, some things that Tebaldi should not have sung. The scenes before and after Casta Diva (including the aria) are very good, with the exception of the little bits of coloratura between verses. She should not have ventured into "Ah! bello a me ritorna" because she could not handle the coloratura. Not because of poor training, but her voice was not one that could move as easily as others. It was a huge instrument. Her scena ed aria from "Puritani" while lacking, once again, in the coloratura passages, can still be appreciated for it's warmth and innocence. The scene from Nabucco, I believe, is immaculate. I cannot help but listen to it. It's full of the fiery passion of Abigaille, the deceit, the anguish, the angry, the loneliness. It's also there. We can certainly forgive the lacking florid passages. Her O don fatale is my favorite. Even the aria from La Sonnambula is amazing. I don't care if it's bel canto. This is something that Tebaldi could've sung at any time in her career. That is not to say that she could've handled Amina. Certainly not. "Ah! non giunge!" would've been suicide for Tebaldi.

Yes, there are better recordings of nearly everything on this disc, whether by Tebaldi, or by another artist. But the title of the album is correct...it's a Tebaldi Festival! It's comparable to a carnival. You can listen and just have fun with Mme. Tebaldi.

I won't ignore, of course, the first disc. Some stuck up opera whores will say that Tebaldi singing Wagner/Massenet/Saint-Saens in Italian is heinous. Have we forgotten that until recently most operas were sung in the language of the audience or in the language of the interpreter? I would rather here an emotionally present "liebestod" in Italian than a weak, distracted, stumbling one in German.

It's good stuff, people!

Tebaldi's swan song?.......2004-11-02

It wasn't without some reservation that I purchased this recording, which I later came to cherish dearly. I was intrigued by the fact that Tebaldi wanted to give a try to a Fach that did not suit her otherwise manifolded talent. I am referring to the bel canto heroines such as Norma and Elvira, along with the veristic Carmen and sensous Dalila. While Carmen and Dalila fare much better, given Tebaldi's stunning arsenal of dark chest notes, the dramatic coloratura parts of Norma and Elvira are below par, as Tebaldi never was a coloratura soprano (she was a spinto soprano) and must therefore negotiate the difficult fioriture with evident great effort. Nevertheless, it is a pleasure to listen to her in these pieces. The first part of Norma's grande entrée showstopper, "Sediziose voci..", and the ensuing recitative are sung with rich detail and plenty of bravura.
This recording however is a well of surprises. I was totally swept off my feet by Tebaldi's rendition of Wagner's Liebestod. I remember saying to myself: "brava, Renata!", when I first listened to this piece. Later, I read in the liner notes that the members of the orchestra had stood up for an improvised ovation of the diva after the recording of Liebestod. I can now understand why. My surprise continued for the whole of the German repertoire on this recording (albeit in Italian) and for the velvety excerpts from Sonnambula and Manon, where Tebaldi brings a lovely touch of melancholic vulnerabiltiy.

GIVE HER AN "E" FOR EFFORT!.......2002-08-23

Tebaldi was a great soprano, and it is on her magnificent recordings of her complete operas made in the 1950's that one finds the prime Tebaldi. Like Callas (with whom she should never have been compared), she developed vocal problems fairly early (though Callas demonstrated vocal problems first), and by the time she had reached her 50th birthday in 1972, her career on the opera stage was over (a few years of recitals and concerts were still left for her). Callas, of course, by this time was completely silent, save for that sad comeback series with Giuseppe di Stefano.
By the time these recordings were made in the late 1960's,
Tebaldi's uppermost notes were pretty far gone. Also, the fact that she never sang in any language other than Italian definitely diminishes the idiomatic quality of the non-Italian items on this recording. Wagner in Italian is simply not Wagner, and to hear the music of Carmen and Dalila sung in Italian is to weigh the music down with an inappropriate heaviness - sort of a suffle being turned into a dumpling!
The Italian items on this recording may find Tebaldi singing in her native language, but they certainly do not find her vocally comfortable, and I would have liked to hear what she would have done with Norma ten or fifteen years earlier, though even then she had no real bel canto flexibility. Operas like "Nabucco", "Puritani", and "Sonnambula" would have never been for her because she lacked the florid technique to do them justice.
But Tebaldi, like a true veteran, valliantly attempts this music and manages to get through them with a modicum of respectibility.
But this is nowhere near the ultimate Tebaldi ---- for that one must go to her recordings made on London in the 1950's -- creamy and luscious versions of "Butterfly", "Boheme", "Forza", "Tosca",
"Fannicula del West", "Otello", "Andrea Chenier", etc.
This recording is OK for Tebaldi fans only, but not even they can deny the deterioration in her voice here as compared to her vocally impeccable work a decade earlier.

Tebaldian all the way!.......2001-09-29

A lot of peolpe I talk to about this album are skeptical about it, saying that she shouldn't have made it, but then my response usually is, "Well where else are you going to hear her sing some of these selctions, which I think are better than other singers' interpretations?!!" You will not be able to hear her do the mad scene from Puritani, Casta Diva, or anything from Nabucco on any other CD of hers-end of story!! True, she may have been past her prime, but so was the "rival"(Callas)which didn't seem to stop her for the next 20 years, and seeing as how Tebaldi lasted for 30 years+ by being careful not to damage her instrument, as opposed to Callas' 13 years of complete misuse...well, need I say more? Enjoy!

Excellent Compilation.......2005-03-05

We were looking for a good source to introduce our children (4 and 6) to various classical composers and melodies. We had tried one of the Baby Einstein tapes, but all the music was done on synthesizers. This compilation is done with real orchestras.
It has been a great tool in getting the kids familiar with all different types of composers - from Baroque and Classical, to Romantics and someone modern composers.

A fine performance by Koh........2002-08-28

Jennifer Koh has not received the top of the heap reviews of the concerto. She should. I could be critical but the other recording of any merit is on Reference Recordings. Unfortunately it is in AZ and I am in MI and can't make a side by side comparison. But she is head and shoulders above the competition and the orchestra is ever, ever, so much better. A real relief for one who loves this concerto. It should be played more in the concert hall. If you haven't heard the this lyrical, romantic, twentieth century concerto, then better rush to buy this. The sound is extra fine; full and warm. I don't think the violin she is using is all that great but the sound is OK and enjoyable. Some old fiddles are finally giving out and this might be one of them but is seems to give her a responsive fiddle that lets her do whatever she pleases. Koh has technique galore. I do wish she would use more artistic fingerings but I am probably the only one who is going to carp about their scarcity. The Death is a good coupling as most listeners will not be familer with either work. Buy this!

No Mean Menotti!.......2002-06-30

I voted positively for the previous Gian-Carlo Menotti disc from Chandos, the one featuring "L'apocalisse" and the suite from "Sebastian" and filled out by the "Fantasia," really a one-movement concerto, for cello and orchestra. The big item on the new disc in what is apparently a Menotti cycle from Chandos is the Violin Concerto (1952) in three movements; the rest of the program consists of three of Menotti's vocal-choral cantatas, two on Spanish- and one on an English-language text. Menotti enjoys his reputation because of his operas. Conductor Richard Hickox and the Spoleto Festival players have decided to present Menotti's instrumental and non-operatic vocal music in new recordings; Menotti has produced not a little in both categories. There are, for example, two concertos for piano, one for double bass, not to mention the Cello Fantasia. The Violin Concerto shows some audacity on its composer's part in this sense: Menotti spent many decades as the partner of Samuel Barber, who wrote "the" American violin concerto in 1939; any fiddle score by Menotti would inevitably invite comparison with Barber, probably of a negative sort under the claim of derivation. In fact, Menotti's concerto is its own creature entirely and is in some respects superior to Barber's oft-performed showpiece. The First Movement (Allegro Moderato) begins with lyric urgency, the solo spinning out a long melodic (and rather modal sounding) line over subtle, non-intrusive orchestral accompaniment; the orchestral part occasionally comes into its own. This is a more complicated movement psychologically than the corresponding movement of the Barber concerto. At moments, one feels how intuitively close Menotti is to the mid-century Italian instrumental composers such as Malipiero and Pizetti. Like them, Menotti grafts romantic harmony on baroque forms; the business of the Malipiero orchestra, for example, is close at hand in Menotti's Concerto -- the moto perpetuo bustle distantly reminiscent of Vivaldi or Corelli. The Second Movement (Adagio) is an aria for the solo and orchestra, of great warmth. The Third Movement (Allegro Vivace) has a scherzo-like quality. Jennifer Koh is the violinist. Since I know no other performance of the work, I can only say that she sounds convincing to me, if not as robust in her execution of the part as she might be. The three cantatas, if not terribly significant, are at least enjoyable. "The Death of Orpheus" is a kind of operatic scena for voices and orchestra. Recommended for the marvelous Concerto.
