5 out of 5 stars the best start a band could have for their debut album.......2003-08-31

I first heard Poor Old Lu doing a song for the browbeat unplugged alternative album, and it was quite refreshing. When this album finally came out months later, I put this on repeat and probably drove my friends nuts. The songs are wonderful, and kinda reminiscent of Cannonball by the breeders in a way, but for more inventive and great after many listens. All Pretty For TV, It's allright, and Crucial just shine, and I know that I've heard alot of the songs of this album played in the background of various mtv shows like the real world. It's a very strong debut and by far my favorite of all their albums. If you don't have the album, get it while you can. It's getting harder to come by these days. All the copies are getting snatched up.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Poor Old Lu, you need this album!.......1999-03-29

"Mindsize" is quite different from Poor Old Lu's later albums, but still has all the qualities that make them great. My favorites are the lighter kind of pop "All Pretty For the T.V." and the darker almost trudging sounds of "In Love With the Greenery." Scott's lyrics are as brilliant as ever, as demonstrated by possibly the most quoted line from any Poor Old Lu album, "And the Son will shine, and the reign won't fall", from the beautiful lullaby-like final track, "Shine."

4 out of 5 stars Latter-Day JT.......2006-03-03

Like the bands to which they are most often compared, the members of Jacob's Trouble were, by and large, creatures of change. Just as the Beatles quickly moved beyond the confines of their early blues-based rock to explore folk and psychedelia and the Byrds eventually switched from their chiming folk-pop roots to investigate country-rock, the JT collective began to branch out a bit on their third album.

Featuring new members Keith Johnston (guitar) and Ron Cochran (drums), the Mark Heard-produced Let the Truth Run Wild was a transitional work of sorts which found the band trading much of the shimmering British Invasion-influenced pop of their first two efforts for earthier, more organic fare. The low, Duane Eddy-like guitars and bare-bones percussion of "Something Good Happens" lend the song a slight rockabilly edge. The equally winning "Morning Light" goes one step further, featuring a folky, almost country-inflected twang. And "You Scare the Hell Outta Me" is a barreling ball of spirit and grit.

Even with its less polished production, the third project, as a whole, retains the better portion of the upbeat, melodic underpining which made the debut and Knock, Breathe, Shine so engaging. And despite the inclusion of a fair amount of weaker material, it showed that front man Jerry Davison and his cohorts were capable of pulling off more than one style of music convincingly. Not nearly as essential as the freshman and sophomore outings, Truth is nonetheless still highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jacob's Trouble -- A great band ahead of their time.......2001-12-17

In my humble opinion Jacob's Trouble is one of the very best Christian bands of all time. Their hooky guitars, solid percussions, and straightforward lyrics made them a hit. Sadly they remain to this day largely a 'sleeper' hit. I know that I only recently discovered the band when KMG rereleased their CD's in '98 and 2000. This particular compilation features 'Let the Truth Run Wild' and 'Jacob's Trouble'. 'Let the Truth Run Wild' is considered by most fans to be the bands very best release, while they remain true to their 60s style they were famous for in their first two releases, they combined their style with a more modern rock format that worked extremely well. This one was produced by the late Mark Heard. It features hits such as 'Something Good Happens', 'Love Me Today', and 'Love is the Reason We Live', all of which are among my favorite songs of all time. 'Jacob's Trouble' moves to a new style for the band, featuring a heavier 'alternative' rock sound, but still remaining true to their roots. 'Wild, Wild Ride' and 'The Way of the Cross' are very rocking tunes and are some of the best work they produced in their career. If you enjoy good Christian music, or good music period, I highly recommend this and all of their CD's, but if you can only afford one, then this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Jacob's Trouble -- Awesome band, too far ahead of their time.......2001-12-17

Jacob's Trouble is in my opinion the best contemporary Christian band of all time. Their hooky guitars, solid percussions, straightforward lyrics, and energy behind every song made them a truly unique band that many others such as 3rd Day and The Way have attempted to emulate. Unfortunately they hit their prime at a time when their style of music was not especially popular. If they had hit the scene only 5 years later they would have taken off for certain. 'Let the Truth Run Wild' is considered by most fans to be their best album, combining their British Invasion inspired rock with modern rock sounds to create a truly unique, inspiring, and just plain awesome listening experience. 'Something Good Happens', 'Love Me Today', and 'Love is the Reason We Live' are among my favorite songs of all time. Like many others I discovered this band only a couple years ago, when KMG rereleased their CD's, and missed out on them the first time. Don't make the mistake of missing out on them now. If you like lively Christian music, pick up all of their CD's, they are sure to please! The second album, self titled 'Jacob's Trouble' was the band's final release of all original material. It features a heavier 'alternative rock' style, but manages to remain true to Jacob's Trouble's roots. They put out some genuinely rocking tunes on this one, with 'Wild, Wild Ride', and 'The Way of the Cross' standing out as the rockingest of them all. These guys are way better than any modern Christian bands, I highly recommend picking up these CD's!

4 out of 5 stars Two Classic Albums For The Price Of One!.......2001-05-11

"Let The Truth Run Wild" was produced by the late Mark Heard, and he brought out the best in JT. Their "Monkee-esque" sound is still there, but fresh and fun. The lyrics are thoughtful and come from a Christian worldview, but with an emphasis on uplifting the listener. This is a great record for the car! "Jacob's Trouble" was their last studio album and abandons their trademark "updated" 60's rock sound for a U2-type sound (Achtung Baby). Both albums are well produced and well played rock albums. Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Have to Be a Christian to Love this Album!.......2007-02-20

Believe it or not, I am a Jew who is love with this album! Even though it is technically "Christian rock" I love the total 80's sound and the array of songs that range from the humorous to the very thought provoking. While listening to this album (which I have done a least 100 times) I have applauded Terry Taylor for making something that expresses his faith in such a beautiful and haunting way without tramping over other's beliefs. That is what I feel makes this album so special. (And, also, there is a song about William Blake who is my favorite poet and is why I originally listened to it in the first place.) So if you love 80's music this is a great addition to your collection. And if by chance I ever do decide to become a Christian I will owe it to Terry Taylor. Good job Terry from a Jew who admires your album!

This "fiesta" is in honor of the Virgin, and contains music by Roque Jacinto de Chavarria, a Brazilian Baroque composer (1688-1719), Juan de Araujo (Chavarria's teacher) and others. Don't let their unfamiliarity and the unfamiliarity of the other composers/arrangers on this CD put you off--all the music is flavorful, solid, Baroque fare, and much of it is rhythmically propulsive with an exciting Latin beat. Musicologist Bernardo Illari has put it all together to create a thrilling, vastly entertaining, and unique experience. It winds ups as a veritable pageant, beginning with a drummed entry into the cathedral, followed by the polyphonic sections alternating with purely instrumental ones and some nice monophony as well. Needless to say, Garrido leads his large instrumental and vocal forces with verve and understanding. The CD comes with a DVD including an interview with Garrido and some rehearsal footage which should have been more gripping if they were to include it at all--but why look a gift-horse in the mouth? --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Another highlight in Garrido's discography.......2005-06-09

Firstly, full agreement with the review immediately below.

The disc probably should perhaps have been entitled Chavarria - selected works, since this otherwise unknown native Bolivian composer (1688-1719) doesn't appear to ever have had a disc in his name yet dominates the tracklisting. Though one can understand Garrido wanting to celebrate an "event", a "context", rather than a single composer, along the lines that Paul McCreesh is perhaps best known for in his San Rocco, Venetian Coronation, recordings and so on. Garrido has of course done this kind of "context" disc before, as have other artists in the K617 label's Les Chemins du Baroque series.

Chavarria's boistrous Spanish settings consist of villancicos, salves, and a bullfight. They are complimented by Latin motets from Flores, Guzman, and anonymous. As usual in K617's full price releases (though not reissues) the documentation is superb - essays in French English and Spanish and original texts with French translations. Generous timing at 78'19. Plus the free DVD of course.

5 out of 5 stars Vividly atmospheric "Fiesta"!.......2005-05-07

This recording aims to recapture something of the exuberance of the musical celebrations surrounding the 'Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe', in La Plata (now Sucre) in early 18th century Bolivia [complete track listing given at the end of this review]. Much of the programme focuses on works by the talented (but hitherto largely neglected) Roque Jacinto de Chavarria (1688-1719); these are complemented with pieces by his [New-World] contemporaries, some better known (such as Juan de Araujo), others not. Listeners new to this repertory may be struck by the archaic style of some pieces, though they make sense in the context of contemporary Iberian music (in particular the villancicos of Juan Frances de Iribarren [1698-1767]). Other pieces, in contrast, are more typical of the Italian Baroque style, such as Chavarria's Salve regina 'Parajillos madrugad!' [track 13].

The performances by Ensemble Elyma (supplemented with the ensemble Ars Longa de La Havane and the Cor Vivaldi, Els Petits Cantors de Catalunya) are outstanding - indeed, I believe this is one of the finest recordings of New World Baroque music currently available. Most pieces are given a suitably colouristic interpretation - voices, strings [bowed and plucked], wind instruments [loud and soft] and occasionally percussion - as it seems was most probably the case in the original performances (interested readers should consult literature by Robert Stevenson and Steven Barwick etc). The programme also includes some fascinating dance-songs taken from the manuscripts of Don Baltasar Martinez Companon (a pioneering ethnomusicologist and also Bishop of Trujillo, 1779-89), which bear the hallmarks of music which can be heard to this day in South America. Whether such pieces would have been as orchestrated as they are here is perhaps a matter for conjecture, although it is impossible not to be carried away by the brilliance of Garrido's interpretations! [The original manuscripts are accompanied by Companon's own watercolour illustrations, which depict musicians - sometimes native Indians, sometimes Creoles or Africans - in small groups, playing a mixture of Western instruments (like harp and guitar) and traditional ones such as the quijada and the cajita].

The CD also includes a free DVD with extracts from a concert of this programme, and an interview with Gabriel Garrido. Highly recommended!
