5 out of 5 stars Classic tracks.......2006-04-18

This is the best Perez Prado album available. It has all the originals which were the best. Great sound considering the original hits (Mambo No.5, Mambo No.8, Que rico el mambo) were recorded in 1950. Ignore the first review that was written by someone who knows little about Perez Prado.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly mastered, amateur mix.......2006-04-09

Only die hard fans of Prado or folks with no appreciation for a good sounding CD will dig this album. Each track has a different volume and quality level ranging from transistor radio to hifi. BUT, if you want to hear him at his best but can do without Cherry Blossom Pink, check out the CD 'PREZ' The Mambo King, Vol. 1 [Original recording remastered]. It's fantastico and sounds so good it's hard to believe it was recorded in '57. You will feel as if you are driving the strip in Miami in an old convertible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Old-Time Mambo Orchestra.......2006-03-05

Wow, what a needed CD. I love the arrangement of the songs in the style of the mambo of the Palladium Ballroom. I especially liked the no. 7 song, Si Una Vez, for the great arrangement. The singing is great too. Another reviewer trashed it, which is unfortunate. These people are totally uknown and obviously do it for the sheer love of the music. I really wish I could see something like this in my area (Baton Rouge - New Orleans), but since my area is destroyed, nobody is coming here. Anyway, this recording is a blessing.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-04-05

This Cd by far should've won the grammy. Amazing arrangements by Angel Melendez. Great music that puts you in a great mood.

3 out of 5 stars Grammy?.......2005-01-04

This Album sounds ok. A grammy nomination is kind of pushing it though. It sounds as if everyone was playing to something different. There is no "meshing" or blending going on. The voicings in the brass aren't the most pleasing to the ear and the phrasing isn't all that hot, but I guess it's kinda hard with so many horns. There is no drive present...No hard swing. The sound quality is the best thing this CD has to offer, thanx to the master engineer Jon Fausty. This CD sounds decent. It's better than some other stuff thats out there, but I wouldn't put it at the top of my list.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME Minus 1.......2004-07-18

This album is the best thing i have heard in years except for song number 7 the singer there just needs a little more originality, she reminds me of the same recycled stuff i've been trying to avoid the past few years but i can always just skip that song.

Several years ago we bought this great collection for my mother-in-law, who's in her 80s, and while a lot of the music was familiar to me and my husband, she knew every song. Now it's one of our favorites, too. Anyone who loves music will appreciate this. The double-disc set contains many memorable tunes, from Hugo Winterhalter's "Canadian Sunset" to Jimmy Dorsey's "So Rare".

Damaso Pérez Prado was one of Latin music's most inventive bandleaders--literally, as he merged jazz elements with guaracha rhythms, creating the potent concoction known as mambo. The 20-track Mondo Mambo! gets Prado's two biggest U.S. hits, the rather tame "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" (1955) and the ultratame "Patricia" (1958), out of the way quickly, the better to serve up track after classic track of blaring horns, deep-dish percussion, and shouted exhortations by the master himself. The great Beny More adds vocals to the beyond-torrid "Babarabatiri" and two other numbers, while Prado lays down some daring Monk-style pianistics on "Pianolo." (The disc also includes Prado's original "Mambo No. 5," which Lou Bega turned into a daffy smash in 1999.) --Rickey Wright

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best starting place for mambo.......2005-11-08

Perez Prado pretty much invented mambo, plain and simple. Sure, you can point to earlier artists as having laid some of the groundwork for it, but it was Prado who brought it all together as one genre. If you are interested in getting into Prado's works or the mambo genre as a whole, this is a good sampler to pick up. Sure it doesn't have all his best works (the "Voodoo Suite" probably couldn't be included here due to its length) and it does have some of his more tame works (the first two tracks where big hits so they pretty much had to be included here), but it has a lot of his best songs. His best songs are the best things the mambo genre ever produced - full of loud squeling horns and shouted vocals. In other words, great stuff to dance to. Try to track down a used copy of this, as it probably is the best Prado compilation. While you're at it, also pick up Rhino's Tito Puente compilation (also out of print), Rhino's "Mambo Mania" sampler, and Prado's "Voodoo Suite" album (the title track is probably his best work).

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of Perez..........2005-09-15

This CD collects 20 of the best recordings by "The King of the Mambo", including the #1 hits "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" and "Patricia". If you like the mambo, you will definitely enjoy this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars A cheeseball classic!.......2000-12-24

If you get a kick out of the some of the lounge classic discs (as I definitely do), you'll love this one.

"Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" is one of the top ten lounge hits of all time, of course. But the rest of the album is every bit as much fun, with all the cliches of mambo, like the loud karate-style grunts, taken to the max.

I've got the Ultra-Lounge "Mambo Fever" disc, but it doesn't come close to this one if you're looking for a definitive mambo collection.

Liner notes are also excellent. The only minus is some shaky sound quality, but that's something you learn to live with if you like pre-seventies pop.

5 out of 5 stars Perez Prado Was One Of The Top Ten Mambo Latin Bands.......2000-05-29

If you are looking for some of the best latin mambo band you have found it, I belive Perez Prado music will live for ever, You can play his music on any type of party you man have, His music will make you get up and dance, you won't be able to set down, do youself a favor, Don't pass this wonderful CD up, oder Perez Prado CD's now, you will be glad you did.

    4 out of 5 stars A great CD.......2000-05-05

Prado, of course, invented the Mambo. Really, he did. He took a straight angled big-band sound and twisted it into a crazy cauldron of repetetive rhythm, overlayed with intersecting horn solos and driven by a savage, primal heartbeat of bongo and conga drums. You hear Prado's work all the time, on waffle commercials, in the supermarket or in elevators in drab cheerless remixes. But in those places, it's robbed of the frenetic energy, the fantastic and infectious thunder that makes you want to DANCE!

Without Perez, we'd have no Tito Puente, no Buena Vista Social Club, no Gloria Estefan. They all owe a tremendous debt to Prado's wild experiments.

This album is a little heavy on the treble, so keep that in mind while playing, and set the equalizer accordingly. The songs are fantastic, there are no real stand alone favorites, I love them all.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection.......2006-01-07

I would suggest that this compilation is very good indeed. I grew up listening to Perez on vinyl and this CD has several primo tunes from several of his very early 60s or late 50s albums. Couldn't agree less with the other review. Quality is high & the beats will get you dancin'!!

3 out of 5 stars Odd mix of originals and rerecordings.......2003-03-17

Supposedly, this piece from the Camden subsidiary of U.K. RCA is a collection of the "very best" of the King of Mambo, Perez Prado. And while the infectious, mostly-mambo melodies are great listening fun, the idea that these are "originals" as indicated on the jewel box spline just ain't true. Most of these tracks are 1959 stereo rerecordings of the earlier hit and album versions although there are a few original mono versions here. Apparently, the compiliers either did not know what they were grabbing from the tape vaults or just opted for the seemingly superior-sounding later stereo recordings. Though not necessarily inferior and actually sonically superior to the flatter, older mono originals, some of these stereo versions are considerably and sometimes annoyingly dissimilar - "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" being one of the most egregious. Musically, totally enjoyable but if you're a purist looking for the original hit versions, pass this up and try to get the now out-of-print Rhino piece done back in the mid-90's even though that collection has fewer tracks. Until someone comes along with an all-inclusive original hits package of Prado's work, these pieces will have to fill the bill.
