There's an alternately ethereal and electric power pulsing through Gozo Poderoso, the stellar fifth album from Colombian duo Aterciopelados. Maybe that's because the team of vocalist-guitarist Andrea Echeverri and bassist Hector Buitrago have rooted their sound in traditional rhythms while deftly dipping it in some of today's most exciting genres. Each track on the album flows effortlessly into the next, but there's nary a hint of repetition. It's all tied together by intricate production and a spiritual intelligence that flows through many of the song lyrics. "Luz Azul," "Esmeralda," and "El Album" (the first single) are stand-outs, anchored by Echeverri's slyly seductive vocals. Cumbia, salsa, and vallenato intermingle with alt-rock riffs, electronica flourishes, and bossa nova rhythms. It's an intoxicating mix that's impossible to classify--and resist. --Joey Guerra

an evolving wonderful style.......2003-04-08

Having been a fan of Aterciopelados for almost a decade I find it incredible how they keep evolving their wonderful sound (hear the new updated version of Florecita Rockera on Evolution). This album definitely shows their increasing interest in electronica that gives it a smooth trippy sound that goes wonderfully with Andrea's deep and emotive voice. But, while one reviewer calls this the best in non-western music (umm, what hemisphere is Latin America supposed to be in?), let me clarify...this is some of the best of ignored, non-English language western music that shows the influence of both regional (Colombian) and more universal sounds in rock, electronica and pop. A keeper to enjoy over and over - whatever your native language.

This is a CD of exceptional beauty. The music flows smooth and light. It is music that you simply cannot tire of listening to. The more you experience it the more you appreciate the depth of its beauty. The music is complex yet smooth and the lyrics combine passion with wisdom...

This is the first/only album of theirs that I have (yet) - so I don't know if this is their "style" - but the CD packaging is a beautiful trippy thing! It's unusal in that the booklet is bound into the CD case - like a book! Pomo-psychedelic art by various band members, and all lyrics - in Spanish. Colorful, dreamy. Buy this one!

Los Aterciopelados, poderosos y fantásticos.......2002-08-11

This is possibly the best album I've ever heard. These colombians have managed to script a powerful, relaxing, enjoyable disk with sounds reminiscent (but distinct) of those of the british group Morcheeba. If you don't buy this cd your missing out on a complete musical and emotional experience. I couldn't begin to say enough about Gozo poderoso, other than you deserve to own it.

Favorite Spanish Metal Band.......2005-10-20

I lived in a pueblo called Eurovillas near Madrid, Spain and one day in the nearby village of Nuevo Baztan, someone told us there was going to be a concert by a rock band. We decided to check it out. That band was Obus and THEY ROCKED! I had no clue what they were singing about, but I don't listen to the lyrics anyway, so what I heard was a unique flavor with the "articulated vocal noises" as Zappa used to say.

This is the first album I bought by them and I liked it at first listen. Every song is great and the opener, in particular, has a Latin feel to it that I can't quite describe. It is metal, no doubt, but in a unique voice. Fortu Sanchez, their lead singer owned a bar in Eurovillas where my kids used to hang out and I got to meet him a few times. A really nice guy. A great song on the album, Dinero, as it turns out, is the song that Fortu hated! I guess he got sick of singing it all the time but the kids would tell him how much they liked it!

I used to listen to this album on the way to work each day and there is not a bad song. They all rock! I saw them in concert one more time and it just seemed much better to see them and be familiar with their music. They put on a great show too. In the nineties, my daughter saw Fortu on MTV during some special about Spain.

I guess Baron Rojo is the most internationally known metal band from Spain, but my vote is for Obus!

Highly recommended!

SOPHOMORE ALBUM.......2005-08-06

Another gem of an album by this powerful spanish band,this album is very much in the same vein of their first release PREPARATE.The music is as raw and in your face as on the first one(read my review) only maybe it lacks the surprise element that was so striking on the first one.Anyway a good buy if you already have their debut and want to go for more.
